The flow field near a spur dike such as down flow and horseshoe vortex system(HVS)are susceptible to the topographic changes in the local scouring process,resulting in variation of the sediment transport with time.In this study,large eddy simulations with fixed-bed at different scouring stages were conducted to investigate the changes in flow field.The results imply that the bed deformation leads to an increase in flow rate per unit area,which represent the capability of sediment transportation by water,in the scour hole.Moreover,the intensity of turbulent kinetic energy and bimodal motion near the sand bed induced by the HVS were also varied.However,the peak moments between the two sediment transport mechanisms were different.Hence,understanding the complex feedback mechanism between topography and flow field is essential for the local scour problem. 展开更多

Investigation of Liquid Cooling Plate for Server CPUs Based on Topology Optimization

In this study, a microchannel liquid cooling plate (LCP) is proposed for Intel Xeon 52.5 mm * 45 mm packaged architecture processors based on topology optimization (TO). Firstly, a mathematical model for topology optimization design of the LCP is established based on heat dissipation and pressure drop objectives. We obtain a series of two-dimensional (2D) topology optimization configurations with different weighting factors for two objectives. It is found that the biomimetic phenomenon of the topologically optimized flow channel structure is more pronounced at low Reynolds numbers. Secondly, the topology configuration is stretched into a three-dimensional (3D) model to perform CFD simulations under actual operating conditions. The results show that the thermal resistance and pressure drop of the LCP based on topology optimization achieve a reduction of approximately 20% - 50% compared to traditional serpentine and microchannel straight flow channel structures. The Nusselt number can be improved by up to 76.1% compared to microchannel straight designs. Moreover, it is observed that under high flow rates, straight microchannel LCPs exhibit significant backflow, vortex phenomena, and topology optimization structures LCPs also tend to lead to loss of effectiveness in the form of tree root-shaped branch flows. Suitable flow rate ranges for LCPs are provided. Furthermore, the temperature and pressure drop of experimental results are consistent with the numerical ones, which verifies the effectiveness of performance for topology optimization flow channel LCP. 展开更多

The reduced map is fur... This paper addresses the problem of Hopf-flip bifurcation of high dimensional maps. Using the center manifold theorem, we obtain a three dimensional reduced map through the projection technique. The reduced map is further transformed into its normal form whose coefficients are determined by that of the original system. The dynamics of the map near the Hopf-flip bifurcation point is approximated by a so called “time-2τ^2 map” of a planar autonomous differential equation. It is shown that high dimensional maps may result in cycles of period two, tori T^1 (Hopf invariant circles), tori 2T^1 and tori 2T^2 depending both on how the critical eigenvalues pass the unit circle and on the signs of resonant terms' coefficients. A two-degree-of-freedom vibro-impact system is given as an example to show how the procedure of this paper works. It reveals that through Hopf-flip bifurcations, periodic motions may lead directly to different types of motion, such as subharmonic motions, quasi-periodic motions, motions on high dimensional tori and even to chaotic motions depending both on change in direction of the parameter vector and on the nonlinear terms of the first three orders. 展开更多

In order to investigate the ratcheting behavior of T225NG alloy, a series of ratcheting tests under uniaxial long-cyclic stressing were performed. The results show that the ratcheting strain of this alloy can get into shakedown after tens (or hundreds) of thousand cycles. After the ratcheting strain is saturated under the condition that stress amplitude is half of peak stress, it will bring about subsequent fatigue failure, and relationship between fatigue life and one of peak stress and saturated ratcheting (SR) strain meets power law. As the alloy is under stress jiggling with stress amplitude that is 1%-2.5% of peak stress, the ratcheting strain still become remarkable and goes into shakedown after several hundreds of thousand cycles but there exists little accessional strain caused by creep effect. It is notable that, when the peak stress is 85%-100% of yield stress, the long-cyclic stressing will lead SR strain to be from 1.4% to 2.5% even if the initial ratio of ratcheting strain is zero. Based on ratcheting threshold property of peak stress and monotonicity of relationship between the peak stress and SR strain, a saturated ratcheting model (SRM) is developed to predict SR strain and to estimate saturated creep strain also. Based on the piston theory of supersonic flow and the energy method, the flutter motion equations of a two-dimensional wing with cubic stiffness in the pitching direction are established. The aeroelastic system contains both structural and aerodynamic nonlinearities. Hopf bifurcation theory is used to analyze the flutter speed of the system. The effects of system parameters on the flutter speed are studied. The 4th order Runge-Kutta method is used to calculate the stable limit cycle responses and chaotic motions of the aeroelastic system. Results show that the number and the stability of equilibrium points of the system vary with the increase of flow speed. Besides the simple limit cycle response of period 1, there are also period-doubling responses and chaotic motions in the flutter system. The route leading to chaos in the aeroelastic model used here is the period-doubling bifurcation. The chaotic motions in the system occur only when the flow speed is higher than the linear divergent speed and the initial condition is very small. Moreover, the flow speed regions in which the system behaves chaos axe very narrow. 展开更多

Some of the remarkable characteristics of natural landslides, such as surprisingly long travel distances and high velocities, have been attributed to the mechanisms of frictional heating and thermal pressurization. In this work, this mechanism is combined with a depth-averaged model to simulate the long runout of landslides in the condition of deformation. Some important factors that influence frictional heating and thermal pressurization within the shear zone are further considered, including velocity profile and pressurization coefficient. In order to solve the coupled equations, a combined computational method based on the finite volume method and quadratic upwind interpolation for convective kinematics scheme is proposed. Several numerical tests are performed to demonstrate the feasibility of the computational scheme, the influence of thermal pressurization on landslide run-out, and the potential of the model to simulate an actual landslide. 展开更多

An important consideration is the self-starting capability of the Wells turbine, a phenomenon encountered where the turbine accelerate by itself up to a certain speed for the best turbine performance. In order to clarify the self-starting characteristic and running performance of the Wells turbine in an irregular oscillating flow, a numerical simulation process is established in this paper on the rational assumption of quasi-steady flow conditions, Both self-starting characteristics and running performance are obtained through the numerical simulation and subsequently compared with the experimental data achieved on a computer-controlled oscillating flow test rig which could realize some irregular oscillating flow according to the specified spectrum. Results show that the self-starting time decreases with the increase of the significant wave height and the mean frequency of the irregular oscillating flow, Therefore, it is possible to predict accurately the performance of the Wells turbine by computer simulation. 展开更多

According to the basic idea of classical yin-yang complementarity and modern dual-complementarity, in a simple and unified way proposed by Luo(1987), some uncon ventional Hamilton-type variational principles for dynamics of Reissner sandwich plate can be established systematically. The unconventional Hamilton-type variation principle can fully characterize the initial boundary value problem of this dynamics. In this paper, an important integral relation is given, which can be considered as the generalized principle of virtual work in mechanics. Based on this relation, it is possible not only to obtain the principle of virtual work in dynamics of Reissner sandwich plate, but also to derive systematically the complementary functionals for fivefield, two-field and one-field unconventional Hamilton-type variational principles by the generalized Legender transformations. Furthermore, with this approach, the intrinsic relationship among the various principles can be explained clearly. 展开更多

Quasi-periodic responses can appear in a wide variety of nonlinear dynamical systems. To the best of our knowledge, it has been a tough job for years to solve quasi-periodic solutions, even by numerical algorithms. Here in this paper, we will present effective and accurate algorithms for quasi-periodic solutions by improving Wilson-θ and Newmark-β methods, respectively. In both the two methods, routinely, the considered equations are rearranged in the form of incremental equilibrium equations with the coefficient matrixes being updated in each time step. In this study, the two methods are improved via a predictor-corrector algorithm without updating the coefficient matrixes, in which the predicted solution at one time point can be corrected to the true one at the next. Numerical examples show that, both the improved Wilson-θ and Newmark-β methods can provide much more accurate quasi-periodic solutions with a smaller amount of computational resources. With a simple way to adjust the convergence of the iterations, the improved methods can even solve some quasi-periodic systems effectively, for which the original methods cease to be valid. 展开更多

The parameter incremental method for approximate analytical-expressions of these problems is given. These analytical-expressions of the limit cycle and homoclinic orbit are shown as the generalized harmonic functions by employing a time transformation. Curves of the parameters and the stability characteristic exponent of the limit cycle versus amplitude are drawn. Some of the limit cycles and homoclinic orbits phase portraits are plotted. The relationship curves of parameters μ and A with amplitude a and the bifurcation diagrams about the parameter are also given. The numerical accuracy of the calculation results is good. 展开更多

The theory of bifurcations of the fixed point is applied to such model, and it is proved that the symmetric periodic motion has only pitchfork bifurcation by the analysis of the symmetry of the Poincar6 map. The numerical simulation shows that one symmetric periodic orbit could bifurcate into two antisymmet- ric ones via pitchfork bifurcation. While the control parameter changes continuously, the two antisymmetric periodic orbits will give birth to two synchronous antisymmetric period-doubling sequences, and bring about two antisymmetric chaotic attractors subse- quently. If the symmetric system is transformed into asymmetric one, bifurcations of the asymmetric period n-2 motion can be described by a two-parameter unfolding of cusp, and the pitchfork changes into one unbifurcated branch and one fold branch. 展开更多

Secondly, when the heat conduct parameters are the fuzzy numbers and the temperature boundary conditions are the random numbers, interval equations of the heat conduction are presented. Thirdly, by comparison of the interval results, the result in the interval analysis is larger than that in the confidence interval. Moreover the error expecting equation is presented. The Kelvin viscoelastic constitutive model is chosen to describe the viscoelastic property of the cable material. A mathematical model that describes the nonlinear planar response of a viscoelastic cable with small equilibrium curvature is presented first. And then a method of investigating the mean square response and the almost sure asymptotic stability of the response solution is presented and regions of instability are charted. Finally , the almost sure asymptotic stability condition of a viscoelastic cable with small curvature under narrow band excitation is obtained. 展开更多

The partial differential equations of motion is d... The problem considered is an initially stressed viscoelastic cable with small sag. The cable material is assumed to be constituted by the hereditary differential type. The partial differential equations of motion is derived first. Then by applying Galerkin's method, the governing equations are reduced to a set of third order nonlinear ordinary differential equations which are solved by Runge-Kutta numerical integration procedures. Only after the transverse vibration of the plane is considered and the nonlinear terms are neglected, can the nonlinear ordinary differential equations be expressed as a continuous state equation in the state space. The matrix of state transition is approximated stepwise by the matrix exponential; in addition, the state equation is discretized to a difference equation to improve the computing efficiency. Furthermore, an optimal control of procedure system based on the minimization of a quadratic performance index for state vector and control forces is developed. Finally, the effect of dynamic response of the cable, which is produced by viscoelastic parameters, is testified by the research of digital simulation. 展开更多

This paper conducts a Large Eddy Simulation (LES) of Rayleigh Bénard convection in a cubic cavity based on the WMLES S-Omega subgrid-scale model. For a cubic cavity with a vertical temperature difference of 6.7°C and 20°C, the velocity pulsation profiles and the mean velocity profiles of the vertical section in the middle of the cubic cavity were simulated, respectively. And they are consistent with the experiment results. Furthermore, the mean velocity field of the vertical cross-section in the middle of the cavity was calculated. Structures of the mean velocity field in the two cases are similar. A counterclockwise large vortex is found to occupy the cavity, and there are two small clockwise vortices in the lower left and upper right corners, and the mean velocity fields at two different temperature differences are consistent with the experimental results. The two-dimensional instantaneous temperature field and mean temperature field with different cross-sections in the z-direction, as well as the three-dimensional instantaneous isothermal surface structure, indicate that the large-scale circulation motion within the cubic cavity is moving diagonally. In addition, the structure of the mean streamline also illustrates this viewpoint. For the reverse vortex formed at two corners in the mean streamline structure, we used the Q criterion to identify and obtain two vortex structures similar to boomerangs. The basic turbulent structure in RB thermal convection includes the rising and falling plumes generated by buoyancy effects. 展开更多

In this paper, the CMA-TRAMS tropical high-resolution system was used to forecast a typical hot weather process in Guangdong, China with different horizontal resolutions and surface coverage. The results of resolutions of 0.02° and 0.06° were presented with the same surface coverage of the GlobeLand30 V2020, companies with the results of resolution 0.02° with the USGS global surface coverage. The results showed that, on the overall assessment the 2 km model performed better in forecasting 2 m temperature, while the 6 km model was more accurate in predicting 10 m wind speed. In the evaluation of representative stations, the 2 km model performed better in forecasting 2 m temperature and 2 m relative humidity at the coastal stations, and the 2 km model was also better in forecasting 2 m pressure at the representative stations. However, the 6 km model performed better in forecasting 10 m wind speed at the representative stations. Furthermore, the 2 km model, owing to its higher horizontal resolution, presented a more detailed stratification of various meteorological field maps, allowing for a more pronounced simulation of local meteorological element variations. And the use of the surface coverage data of the GlobeLand30 V2020 improved the forecasting of 2 m temperature, and 10 m wind speed compared to the USGS surface coverage data. 展开更多

This paper describes a precise method combining numerical analysis and limit equilibrium theory to determine potential slip surfaces in soil slopes. In this method, the direction of the critical slip surface at any point in a slope is determined using the Coulomb’s strength principle and the extremum principle based on the ratio of the shear strength to the shear stress at that point. The ratio, which is considered as an analysis index, can be computed once the stress field of the soil slope is obtained. The critical slip direction at any point in the slope must be the tangential direction of a potential slip surface passing through the point. Therefore, starting from a point on the top of the slope surface or on the horizontal segment outside the slope toe, the increment with a small distance into the slope is used to choose another point and the corresponding slip direction at the point is computed. Connecting all the points used in the computation forms a potential slip surface exiting at the starting point. Then the factor of safety for any potential slip surface can be computed using limit equilibrium method like Spencer method. After factors of safety for all the potential slip surfaces are obtained, the minimum one is the factor of safety for the slope and the corresponding potential slip surface is the critical slip surface of the slope. The proposed method does not need to pre-assume the shape of potential slip surfaces. Thus it is suitable for any shape of slip surfaces. Moreover the method is very simple to be applied. Examples are presented in this paper to illustrate the feasibility of the proposed method programmed in ANSYS software by macro commands. 展开更多

The uniaxial time-dependent strain cyclic behaviors and ratcheting of SS304 stainless steel were studied at high temperatures (350 ℃ and 700 ℃). The effects of straining and stressing rates, holding time at the peak and/or valley of each cycle in addition to ambient temperature on the cyclic softening/hardening behavior and ratcheting of the material were discussed. It can be seen from experimental results that the material presents remarkable time dependence at 700 ℃, and the ratcheting strain depends greatly on the stressing rate, holding time and ambient temperature. Some significant conclusions are obtained, which are useful to build a constitutive model describiog the time-dependent cyclic deformation of the material. 展开更多
