文摘The deep cement mixing(DCM)is used to improve the capacity and reduce the settlement of the soft ground by forming cemented clay columns. The investigation on the mechanical behaviour of the DCM samples is limited to either laboratory-prepared samples or in-situ samples under unconfined compression. In this study,a series of drained and undrained triaxial shearing tests was performed on the in-situ cored DCM samples with high cement content to assess their mechanical behaviours. It is found that the drainage condition affects significantly the stiffness, peak and residual strengths of the DCM samples, which is mainly due to the state of excess pore water pressure at different strain levels,i.e.being positive before the peak deviatoric stress and negative after the peak deviatoric stress,in the undrained tests. The slope of the failure envelope changes obviously with the confining pressures, being steeper at lower stress levels and flatter at higher stress levels. The strength parameters, effective cohesion and friction angle obtained from lower stress levels(c′0 andφ′0)are 400 kPa and 58°,respectively,which are deemed to be true for design in most DCM applications where the in-situ stress levels are normally at lower values of 50-200 kPa.Additionally, the computed tomography(CT)scanning system was adopted to visualize the internal structures of DCM samples. It is found that the clay pockets existing inside the DCM samples due to uneven mixing affect markedly their stress-strain behaviour, which is one of the main reasons for the high variability of the DCM samples.

文摘A new scour countermeasure using solidified slurry for offshore foundation has been proposed recently.Fluidized solidified slurry is pumped to seabed area around foundation for scour protection or pumped into the developed scour holes for scour repair as the fluidized material solidifies gradually. In the pumping operation and solidification, the engineering behaviors of solidified slurry require to be considered synthetically for the reliable application in scour repair and protection of ocean engineering such as the pumpability related flow value, flow diffusion behavior related rheological property,anti-scour performance related retention rate in solidification and bearing capacity related strength property after solidification. In this study,a series of laboratory tests are conducted to investigate the effects of mix proportion(initial water content and binder content)on the flow value, rheological properties, density, retention rate of solidified slurry and unconfined compressive strength(UCS).The results reveal that the flow value increases with the water content and decreases with the binder amount. All the solidified slurry exhibits Bingham plastic behavior when the shear rate is larger than 5 s^(-1).The Bingham model has been employed to fit the rheology test results, and empirical formulas for obtaining the density, yield stress and viscosity are established, providing scientific support for the numerical assessment of flow and diffusion of solidified slurry.Retention rate of solidified slurry decreases with the water flow velocity and flow value, which means the pumpability of solidified slurry is contrary to anti-scour performance. The unconfined compressive strength after solidification reduces as the water content increases and binder content decreases.A design and application procedure of solidified soil for scour repair and protection is also proposed for engineering reference.

文摘The creep characteristics of rock under high crustal stress are of important influence on the long‐term stability of deep rock engineering. To study the creep characteristics and engineering application of sandstone under high crustal stress, this study constructed nonlinear creep damage(NCD)constitutive mode based on the triaxial graded loading‒unloading creep test of sandstone in the Yuezhishan Tunnel.A numerical NCD constitutive model and a breakable lining(BL)model were developed based on FLAC3D and then applied to the stability analysis of the Yuezhishan Tunnel.Based on the creep test results of sandstone,a power function of creep rate and stress level was constructed,by which the long‐term strength was solved. The results show that the long‐term strength of the red sandstone based on the related function of the steady‐state creep rate and stress level is close to the measured stress value in engineering. The NCD model considering damage factors reflects the instantaneous and viscoelastic plasticity deformation characteristics of the red sandstone. The numerical NCD constitutive model and the BL model can reflect surrounding rock deformation characteristics and lining failure characteristics in practical engineering. The research results provide theoretical references for long‐term stability analysis of rock engineering and the deformation control of surrounding rock under high crustal stress.

文摘The traditional standard wet sieving method uses steel sieves with aperture?0.063 mm and can only determine the particle size distribution(PSD)of gravel and sand in general soil. This paper extends the traditional method and presents an extended wet sieving method. The extended method uses both the steel sieves and the nylon filter cloth sieves. The apertures of the cloth sieves are smaller than 0.063 mm and equal 0.048 mm,0.038 mm,0.014 mm,0.012 mm,0.0063 mm,0.004 mm,0.003 mm,0.002 mm,and 0.001 mm,respectively. The extended method uses five steps to separate the general soil into many material sub-groups of gravel, sand, silt and clay with known particle size ranges. The complete PSD of the general soil is then calculated from the dry masses of the individual material sub-groups.The extended method is demonstrated with a general soil of completely decomposed granite(CDG)in Hong Kong,China. The silt and clay materials with different particle size ranges are further examined, checked and verified using stereomicroscopic observation, physical and chemical property tests. The results further confirm the correctness of the extended wet sieving method.

文摘Mineral carbonation is emerging as a reliable CO_(2) capture technology that can mitigate climate change. In lime-treated clayey soils, mineral carbonation occurs through the carbonation of free lime and cementitious products derived from pozzolanic reactions. The kinetics of the reactions in lime-treated clayey soils are variable and depend primarily on soil mineralogy. The present study demonstrates the role of soil mineralogy in CO_(2) capture and the subsequent changes caused by carbon mineralization in terms of the unconfined compressive strength(UCS)of lime-treated soils during their service life.Three clayey soils(kaolin, bentonite, and silty clay)with different mineralogical characteristics were treated with 4%lime content, and the samples were cured in a controlled environment for 7 d,90 d,180 d,and 365 d.After the specified curing periods, the samples were exposed to CO_(2) in a carbonation cell for 7 d.The non-carbonated samples purged with N2 gas were used as a benchmark to compare the mechanical,chemical-mineralogical,and microstructure changes caused by carbonation reactions.Experimental investigations indicated that exposure to CO_(2) resulted in an average increase of 10%in the UCS of limetreated bentonite, whereas the strength of lime-treated kaolin and silty clay was reduced by an average of 35%.The chemical and microstructural analyses revealed that the precipitated carbonates effectively filled the macropores of the treated bentonite, compared to the inadequate cementation caused by pozzolanic reactions, resulting in strength enhancement. In contrast, strength loss in lime-treated kaolin and silty clay was attributed to the carbonation of cementitious phases and partly to the tensile stress induced by carbonate precipitation. In terms of carbon mineralization prospects,lime-treated kaolin exhibited maximum carbonation due to the higher availability of unreacted lime. The results suggest that,in addition to the increase in compressive strength, adequate calcium-bearing phases and macropores determine the efficiency of carbon mineralization in lime-treated clayey soils.

文摘The study presents a comprehensive coupled thermo-bio-chemo-hydraulic(T-BCH)modeling framework for stabilizing soils using microbially induced calcite precipitation(MICP).The numerical model considers relevant multiphysics involved in MICP,such as bacterial ureolytic activities, biochemical reactions, multiphase and multicomponent transport, and alteration of the porosity and permeability. The model incorporates multiphysical coupling effects through well-established constitutive relations that connect parameters and variables from different physical fields. It was implemented in the open-source finite element code OpenGeoSys(OGS),and a semi-staggered solution strategy was designed to solve the couplings, allowing for flexible model settings. Therefore, the developed model can be easily adapted to simulate MICP applications in different scenarios. The numerical model was employed to analyze the effect of various factors, including temperature, injection strategies, and application scales.Besides,a TBCH modeling study was conducted on the laboratory-scale domain to analyze the effects of temperature on urease activity and precipitated calcium carbonate. To understand the scale dependency of MICP treatment,a large-scale heterogeneous domain was subjected to variable biochemical injection strategies. The simulations conducted at the field-scale guided the selection of an injection strategy to achieve the desired type and amount of precipitation.Additionally, the study emphasized the potential of numerical models as reliable tools for optimizing future developments in field-scale MICP treatment. The present study demonstrates the potential of this numerical framework for designing and optimizing the MICP applications in laboratory-,prototype-,and field-scale scenarios.

文摘As a calculation method based on the Galerkin variation, the numerical manifold method(NMM)adopts a double covering system, which can easily deal with discontinuous deformation problems and has a high calculation accuracy.Aiming at the thermo-mechanical(TM)coupling problem of fractured rock masses, this study uses the NMM to simulate the processes of crack initiation and propagation in a rock mass under the influence of temperature field, deduces related system equations, and proposes a penalty function method to deal with boundary conditions.Numerical examples are employed to confirm the effectiveness and high accuracy of this method.By the thermal stress analysis of a thick-walled cylinder(TWC),the simulation of cracking in the TWC under heating and cooling conditions, and the simulation of thermal cracking of the SwedishÄspöPillar Stability Experiment(APSE)rock column, the thermal stress, and TM coupling are obtained. The numerical simulation results are in good agreement with the test data and other numerical results, thus verifying the effectiveness of the NMM in dealing with thermal stress and crack propagation problems of fractured rock masses.
文摘This study is focused on the effect of vibration induced by moving trains in tunnels on the surrounding ground and structures.A three-dimensional finite element model is established for a one-track railway tunnel and an adjacent twelve-storey building frame by using commercial software Midas GTS-NX(2019)and Midas Gen.This study considered the moving load effect of a complete train, which varies with space as well as with time. The effect of factors such as train speed, overburden pressure on the tunnel and variation in soil properties are studied in the time domain. As a result, the variations in horizontal and vertical acceleration for two different sites,i.e.,the free ground surface(without structure)and the area containing the structure, are compared. Also, the displacement pattern of the raft foundation is plotted for different train velocities. At lower speeds, the heaving phenomenon is negligible, but as the speed increases, both the heaving and differential settlement increase in the foundation. This study demonstrates that the effect of moving train vibrations should be considered in the design of new nearby structures and proper ground improvement should be considered for existing structures.

文摘The compaction quality of subgrade filler strongly affects subgrade settlement. The main objective of this research is to analyze the macro-and micro-mechanical compaction characteristics of subgrade filler based on the real shape of coarse particles.First,an improved Viola-Jones algorithm is employed to establish a digitalized 2D particle database for coarse particle shape evaluation and discrete modeling purposes of subgrade filler.Shape indexes of 2D subgrade filler are then computed and statistically analyzed. Finally, numerical simulations are performed to quantitatively investigate the effects of the aspect ratio(AR)and interparticle friction coefficient(μ)on the macro-and micro-mechanical compaction characteristics of subgrade filler based on the discrete element method(DEM).The results show that with the increasing AR,the coarse particles are narrower, leading to the increasing movement of fine particles during compaction, which indicates that it is difficult for slender coarse particles to inhibit the migration of fine particles. Moreover, the average displacement of particles is strongly influenced by the AR,indicating that their occlusion under power relies on particle shapes. The dis-placement and velocity of fine particles are much greater than those of the coarse particles, which shows that compaction is primarily a migration of fine particles.Under the cyclic load, the interparticle friction coefficientμhas little effect on the internal structure of the sample;under the quasi-static loads, however, the increase inμwill lead to a significant increase in the porosity of the sample. This study could not only provide a novel approach to investigate the compaction mechanism but also establish a new theoretical basis for the evaluation of intelligent subgrade compaction.

文摘Polypropylene(PP)fiber-reinforced cement-based tailings backfill(FRCTB)is a green compound material with superior crack resistance and has good prospects for application in underground mining. However,FRCTB exhibits susceptibility to dynamic events, such as impact ground pressure and blast vibrations. This paper investigates the energy and crack distribution behavior of FRCTB under dynamic impact, considering the height/diameter(H/D)effect.Split Hopkinson pressure bar, industrial computed tomography scan, and scanning electron microscopy(SEM)experiments were carried out on six types of FRCTB.Laboratory outcomes confirmed fiber aggregation at the bottom of specimens. When H/D was less than 0.8,the proportion of PP fibers distributed along theθangle direction of80°-90°increased.For the total energy, all samples presented similar energy absorption, reflectance, and transmittance. However,a rise in H/D may cause a rise in the energy absorption rate of FRCTB during the peak phase.A positive correlation existed between the average strain rate and absorbed energy per unit volume. The increase in H/D resulted in a decreased crack volume fraction of FRCTB.When the H/D was greater than or equal to 0.7,the maximum crack volume fraction of FRCTB was observed close to the incidence plane.Radial cracks were present only in the FRCTB with an H/D ratio of 0.5.Samples with H/D ratios of 0.5 and 0.6 showed similar distributions of weakly and heavily damaged areas.PP fibers can limit the emergence and expansion of cracks by influencing their path.SEM observations revealed considerable differences in the bonding strengths between fibers and the FRCTB.Fibers that adhered particularly well to the substrate were attracted together with the hydration products adhering to surfaces. These results show that FRCTB is promising as a sustainable and green backfill for determining the design properties of mining with backfill.

文摘Coral sandy soils widely exist in coral island reefs and seashores in tropical and subtropical regions.Due to the unique marine depositional environment of coral sandy soils, the engineering characteristics and responses of these soils subjected to monotonic and cyclic loadings have been a subject of intense interest among the geotechnical and earthquake engineering communities. This paper critically reviews the progress of experimental investigations on the undrained behavior of coral sandy soils under monotonic and cyclic loadings over the last three decades. The focus of coverage includes the contractive-dilative behavior, the pattern of excess pore-water pressure(EPWP)generation and the liquefaction mechanism and liquefaction resistance, the small-strain shear modulus and strain-dependent shear modulus and damping, the cyclic softening feature, and the anisotropic characteristics of undrained responses of saturated coral sandy soils. In particular, the advances made in the past decades are reviewed from the following aspects:(1)the characterization of factors that impact the mechanism and patterns of EPWP build-up;(2)the identification of liquefaction triggering in terms of the apparent viscosity and the average flow coefficient;(3)the establishment of the invariable form of strain-based,stress-based,or energy-based EPWP ratio formulas and the unique relationship between the new proxy of liquefaction resistance and the number of cycles required to reach liquefaction;(4)the establishment of the invariable form of the predictive formulas of small strain modulus and strain-dependent shear modulus;and(5)the investigation on the effects of stress-induced anisotropy on liquefaction susceptibility and dynamic deformation characteristics.Insights gained through the critical review of these advances in the past decades offer a perspective for future research to further resolve the fundamental issues concerning the liquefaction mechanism and responses of coral sandy sites subjected to cyclic loadings associated with seismic events in marine environments.
文摘Purpose-The main objective of the present research is to investigate the benefits of using geogrid reinforcement in minimizing the rate of deterioration of ballasted rail track geometry resting on soft clay and to explore the effect of load amplitude, load frequency, presence of geogrid layer in ballast layer and ballast layer thickness on the behavior of track system. These variables are studied both experimentally and numerically. This paper examines the effect of geogrid reinforced ballast laying on a layer of clayey soil as a subgrade layer, where a half full scale railway tests are conducted as well as a theoretical analysis is performed.Design/methodologylapproach-The experimental tests work consists of laboratory model tests to investigate the reduction in the compressibility and stress distribution induced in soft clay under a ballast railway reinforced by geogrid reinforcement subjected to dynamic load.Experimental model based on an approximate half scale for general rail track engineering practice is adopted in this study which is used in Iraqi railways. The investigated parameters are load amplitude, load frequency and presence of geogrid reinforcement layer.A half fuli-scale railway was constructed for carrying out the tests, which consists of two rails 800 mm in iength with three w00den sleepers(900 mm×90 mm×90 mm).The ballast was overlying 500 mm thick clay layer. The tests were carried out with and without geogrid reinforcement, the tests were carried out in a well tied steel box of 1.5 m length X 1 m width X 1 m height.A series of laboratory tests were conducted to investigate the response of the ballast and the clay layers where the ballast was reinforced by a geogrid.Settlement in ballast and clay, was measured in reinforced and unreinforced ballast cases. In addition to the laboratory tests, the application of numerical analysis was made by using the finite element program PLAXIS 3D 2013.Findings-It was concluded that the settlement increased with increasing the simulated train load amplitude, there is a sharp increase in settlement up to the cycle 500 and after that, there is a gradual increase to level out between,2,500 and 4,500 cycles depending on the load frequency. There is a little increase in the induced settlement when the load amplitude increased from 0.5 to i ton,but it is higher when the load amplitude increased to 2 ton,the increase in settlement depends on the geogrid existence and the other studied parameters. Both experimental and numerical results showed the same behavior. The effect of load frequency on the settlement ratio is almost constant after 500 cycles. In general, for reinforced cases, the effect of load frequency on the settlement ratio is very small ranging between 0.5 and 2%compared with the unreinforcedcase.Originalitylvalue-Increasing the ballast layer thickness from 20 cm to 30 cm leads to decrease the settlement by about 50%.This ascertains the efficiency of ballast in spreading the waves induced by the track.
文摘Geotechnical analyses were carried out to examine the contributions of engineering geological properties of subgrade soils to the failure of the Akure-Ikere Ekiti road,Southwestern Nigeria.Field observations revealed that the road is in a very poor state of serious deformation and disrepair as most parts of the road alignment have failed. The alignment of the studied road is predominantly underlain by Granite,Charnockites, and Migmatites.Laboratory tests results showed that the natural moisture content ranges from 10.98 to 21.4%,liquid limit from 22.8 to 47.7%,plastic limit from 19.2 to 24.6,plasticity index 3.6 to 26.3%.The grain size analysis revealed that the amount of fines ranges from 15.9 to 49%.Others are linear shrinkage, between 1.4 and 10%,free swell between 25 and 46%,maximum dry density from 1593 to 2016 kg/m,and CBR between 5 and 48%.The specific gravity ranges from 2.64 to 2.74.With reference to AASHTO classification,5% of the samples was classified as A-4,15% classified as A-2-4,40% classified as A-6,while 40% classified as A-7-6.The dominance of fair-to-good California bearing ratio, fair to good maximum dry density, high linear shrinkage and A-7-6,A-6,and A-2-4 soil groups have combined to give fair-to-good geotechnical properties to the studied soils.Generally, the fair to good geotechnical properties of soil of the road under study is an indication that the contribution of subgrade soil to the failure of the highway is negligible. The total breakdown of the road can be traced to substandard engineering specifications which are complemented by a poor drainage system.

文摘Snow is important in Türkiye especially in the mountainous eastern areas where it may stay on the ground for more than half of the year. This region plays a vital role in feeding the water resources of the trans-boundary Euphrates-Tigris Basin, supporting crucial dams for water supply, irrigation and energy production. Thus, easy, frequent, correct and economical ways of measuring the snowpack is crucial. The snow properties at specific locations in the mountainous eastern regions over the two snow seasons(2018 and 2019)were studied by using different instruments and techniques, snow pit(box/cylinder/wedge cutter types),snow tube(Federal Sampler)and SnoTel(Snowpack Analyzer). The results point out a 1.7%-7.1%variation between different cutter type snow density measurements within snow pit analysis and the long-term utilized snow tube observations show a closer relation to box/cylinder type cutters. As for the continuous SnoTel observations,a variation of 2.4%-9.8%with various cutter types and a 5.9%difference regarding the snow tube density results are detected. These findings indicate a close range among different instruments, but it is the best when all three systems complement each other to characterize the snowpack effectively in the complex terrain since each has its own advantages.
文摘Given their numerous functional and architectural benefits, such as improved bearing capacity and increased resistance to elastic instability modes,cold-formed steel(CFS)built-up sections have become increasingly developed and used in recent years, particularly in the construction industry. This paper presents an analytical and numerical study of assembled CFS two single channel-shaped columns with different slenderness and configurations(backto-back,face-to-face,and box). These columns were joined by double-row rivets for the back-to-back and box configurations, whereas they were welded together for the face-to-face design. The built-up columns were filled with ordinary concrete of good strength.Finite element models were applied, using ABAQUS software,to assess mechanical performance and study the influence of assembly techniques on the behavior of cold-formed columns under axial compression.Analytical approaches based on Eurocode 3 and Eurocode 4 recommendations for un-filled and concrete-filled columns respectively were followed for the numerical analysis, and concrete confinement effects were also considered per American Concrete Institute(ACI)standards for face-to-face and box configurations. The obtained results indicated a good correlation between the numerical results and the proposed analytical methodology which did not exceed 8%.The failure modes showed that the columns failed due to instabilities such as local and global buckling.
文摘We read with great interest the recent article by Erenson(2023)entitled“Dispersion characteristics of clayey soils containing waste rubber particles”.The author has studied the dispersion characteristics of clayey soils containing different percentages of waste rubber particles(WRPs)by performing several tests(viz.consistency limit, linear shrinkage limit, double hydrometer, crumb test and pinhole test)and scanning electron microscopy(SEM)analysis on five clayey(viz.Na-activated bentonite, refined ball clay,Ukrainian kaolin,Avanos kaolin and Afyon clay)samples containing 0%,5%,10%and 15%WRPs.It should be noted that Erenson(2023)has presented some interesting observations, but there are some serious issues that we want to share through this discussion and request the author of the original paper to address them to avoid their persistence in the scientific literature.
文摘This study aims to predict the undrained shear strength of remolded soil samples using non-linear regression analyses, fuzzy logic, and artificial neural network modeling.A total of 1306 undrained shear strength results from 230 different remolded soil test settings reported in 21 publications were collected, utilizing six different measurement devices.Although water content, plastic limit, and liquid limit were used as input parameters for fuzzy logic and artificial neural network modeling, liquidity index or water content ratio was considered as an input parameter for non-linear regression analyses. In non-linear regression analyses,12 different regression equations were derived for the prediction of undrained shear strength of remolded soil.Feed-Forward backpropagation and the TANSIG transfer function were used for artificial neural network modeling, while the Mamdani inference system was preferred with trapezoidal and triangular membership functions for fuzzy logic modeling. The experimental results of 914 tests were used for training of the artificial neural network models,196 for validation and 196 for testing. It was observed that the accuracy of the artificial neural network and fuzzy logic modeling was higher than that of the non-linear regression analyses.Furthermore,a simple and reliable regression equation was proposed for assessments of undrained shear strength values with higher coefficients of determination.
