The Effect of Basalt Fiber on Concrete Performance under a Sulfate Attack Environment

To enhance the sulfate attack resistance performance of concrete,Sulfate erosion test was carried out on basalt fiber concrete with different contents,selecting a concentration of 5%sulfate solution and using a dry−wet cycle mechanism attack of basalt fiber-reinforced concrete(BFRC).Every 15 dry−wet cycles,the mass,compressive strength,splitting tensile strength,and relative dynamic elastic modulus of BFRC were tested,and the SO_(4)^(2−)con-centration was measured.This work demonstrates that the mass,relative dynamic elastic modulus,compressive and splitting tensile strength of BFRC reveal a trend of climb up and then decline with the process of the dry−wet cycle.Basalt fiber can enhance the sulfate corrosion resistance of concrete by delaying the erosion of concrete induced by SO_(4)^(2−)and increasing the bearing and anti-deformation capacities of concrete by improving its inter-nal structure.Additionally,when mixing 0.2%basalt fiber into concrete,the strength deterioration rate will be reduced when the peak values of splitting tensile and compressive strength appear at 60 and 75 times the alter-nating dry−wet cycles,respectively.Adverse effects will occur when the fiber volume fraction exceeds 0.2%.The research in this paper can provide a foundation for the engineering applications of basalt fiber concrete. 展开更多

Considering the effect of crack gap, the bending deformation of the Timoshenko beam with switching cracks is studied. To represent a crack with gap as a nonlinear unidirectional rotational spring, the equivalent flexural rigidity of the cracked beam is derived with the generalized Dirac delta function. A closed-form general solution is obtained for bending of a Timoshenko beam with an arbitrary number of switching cracks. Three examples of bending of the Timoshenko beam are presented. The influence of the beam's slenderness ratio, the crack's depth, and the external load on the crack state and bending performances of the cracked beam is analyzed. It is revealed that a cusp exists on the deflection curve, and a jump on the rotation angle curve occurs at a crack location. The relation between the beam's deflection and load is bilinear, each part corresponding to an open or closed state of crack, respectively. When the crack is open, flexibility of the cracked beam decreases with the increase of the beam's slenderness ratio and the decrease of the crack depth. The results are useful in identifying non-destructive cracks on a beam. 展开更多

The particle image velocimetry (PIV) method was used to investigate the full-field displacements and strains of the limestone specimen under external loads from the video images captured during the laboratory tests.The original colorful video images and experimental data were obtained from the uniaxial compression test of a limestone.To eliminate perspective errors and lens distortion,the camera was placed normal to the rock specimen exposure.After converted into a readable format of frame images,these videos were transformed into the responding grayscale images,and the frame images were then extracted.The full-field displacement field was obtained by using the PIV technique,and interpolated in the sub-pixel locations.The displacement was measured in the plane of the image and inferred from two consecutive images.The local displacement vectors were calculated for small sub-windows of the images by means of cross-correlation.The video images were interrogated in a multi-pass way,starting off with 64×64 images,ending with 16×16 images after 6 iterations,and using 75% overlap of the sub-windows.In order to remove spurious vectors,the displacements were filtered using four filters:signal-to-noise ratio filter,peak height filter,global filter and local filter.The cubic interpolation was utilized if the displacements without a number were encountered.The full-field strain was then obtained using the local least square method from the discrete displacements.The strain change with time at different locations was also investigated.It is found that the normal strains are dependant on the locations and the crack distributions.Between 1.0 and 5.0 s prior to the specimen failure,normal strains increase rapidly at many locations,while a stable status appears at some locations.When the specimen is in a failure status,a large rotation occurs and it increases in the inverse direction.The strain concentration bands do not completely develop into the large cracks,and meso-cracks are not visible in some bands.The techniques presented here may improve the traditional measurement of the strain field,and may provide a lot of valuable information in investigating the deformation/failure mechanism of rock materials. 展开更多

Based on elasticity and the theory of saturated porous media, and regarding the pile and the soil as a single phase elastic and a saturated viscoelastic media, respectively, the dynamical behavior of vertical vibration of an end-bearing pile in a saturated viscoelastic soil layer is investigated in the frequency domain using the Helmholtz decomposition and variable separation method. The axisymmetrical analytical solutions for vertical vibrations of the pile in a saturated viscoelastic soil layer are obtained, and the analytical expression of the dynamical complex stiffness of the pile top is presented. Responses of dynamic stiffness factor and equivalent damping of pile top with respect to the frequency are shown in figures using a numerical method. Effects of the saturated soil parameters, modulus ratio of the pile to soil, slenderness ratio of pile and pile's Poisson ratio, etc. on the stiffness factor and damping are examined. It is shown that, due to the effect of the transversal deformation of the pile and the radial force of the saturated viscoelastic soil acting on the pile, the dynamic stiffness factor and the damping derived from the axisymmetrical solution are greatly different from those derived from the classical Euler-Bernoulli rod model, especially at some specific excitation frequencies. Therefore, there are limitations on applicability of the Euler-Bernoulli rod model in analyzing verticai vibration of the pile. More accurate analysis should be based on a three-dimensional model. 展开更多

Soil-water characteristics of Gaomiaozi(GMZ)Ca-bentonite at high suctions(3–287MPa)are measured by vapour equilibrium technique.The soil-water retention curve(SWRC)of samples with the same initial compaction states is obtained in drying and wetting process.At high suctions,the hysteresis behaviour is not obvious in relationship between water content and suction,while the opposite holds between degree of saturation and suction.The suction variation can change its water retention behaviour and void ratio.Moreover,changes of void ratio can bring about changes in degree of saturation.Therefore,the total change in degree of saturation includes changes caused by suction and that by void ratio.In the space of degree of saturation and suction,the SWRC at constant void ratio shifts to the direction of higher suctions with decreasing void ratio.However,the relationship between water content and suction is less affected by changes of void ratio.The degree of saturation decreases approximately linearly with increasing void ratio at a constant suction.Moreover,the slope of the line decreases with increasing suction and they show an approximately linear relationship in semi-logarithmical scale.From this linear relationship,the variation of degree of saturation caused by the change in void ratio can be obtained.Correspondingly,SWRC at a constant void ratio can be determined from SWRC at different void ratios. 展开更多

According to the vibration characteristics of the round window, a mechani- cal model of a round window membrane is established. The Euler equation of the round window and the complementary boundary conditions are derived by the variational prin- ciple. Combined with the Bessel function, an analytical solution of the round window displacement is obtained by MATHEMATICA. Combined with clinical characteristics of round window membrane lesion, the effect of sound transmission due to thickening of the round window membrane caused by the otitis media, shrinkage of the round window membrane area caused by otosclerosis, and hardening of the round window membrane itself is analyzed. The results show that with thickening of the round window membrane, the displacement of the round window membrane is decreased. In the meantime, with hardening of the round window membrane and shrinkage of the membrane area, the max- imum displacement Of the round window membrane is gradually reduced, leading to a decrease in sound transmission. Thus, the analyticM analysis can avoid interference of environment and the technical level of personnel, and it can evaluate transmission per- formance of the round window membrane efficiently, providing a theoretical basis for the reverse excitation of artificial prosthesis. 展开更多

In this paper, the effect of fluid in a tunnel of Corti (TC) on organ of Corti (OC) is studied. A three-dimensional OC model including basilar membrane (BM), tectorial membrane (TM), inner and outer hair cells (OHCs), and reticular lamina (RL) is established by COMSOL. An initial pressure is applied to the fluid in the TC. The frequency response of the structure is analyzed, and the displacement of the BM is achieved. The results are in good agreement with the experimental data, confirming validity of the finite element model. Based on the model, the effect of fluid in the TC on the OC is studied. The results show that, when the pressure gradient is absent in the fluid, with the increase of the initial fluid pressure, the displacement of the BM increases. However, when the initial fluid pressure increases to a certain value, the increase rate of the displacement of the BM becomes very slow. The movement of the fluid amplifies the BM movement. Furthermore, the movement of the fluid can strengthen the movement of the OHCs and the shear movement of the stereocilia, especially in the vicinity of the characteristic frequency at which the amplification effect reaches a peak. Nevertheless, a pressure gradient in the fluid affects the BM movement. 展开更多

In this paper, based on the conjugate of the complex basis function, a new complex variable moving least-squares approximation is discussed. Then using the new approximation to obtain the shape function, an improved complex variable element-free Galerkin(ICVEFG) method is presented for two-dimensional(2D) elastoplasticity problems. Compared with the previous complex variable moving least-squares approximation, the new approximation has greater computational precision and efficiency. Using the penalty method to apply the essential boundary conditions, and using the constrained Galerkin weak form of 2D elastoplasticity to obtain the system equations, we obtain the corresponding formulae of the ICVEFG method for 2D elastoplasticity. Three selected numerical examples are presented using the ICVEFG method to show that the ICVEFG method has the advantages such as greater precision and computational efficiency over the conventional meshless methods. 展开更多

According to the relevant data, the corresponding pressure is applied to one side of the inner stereocilia. The top displacement of the inner stereocilia along the cross section of the basilar membrane (the x-displacement) is similar to the available data in the literature, which verifies the correctness of the model. Based on Castigliano's theorem, the displacement of a single stereocilium is achieved under the inverted triangle force. The results are in good agreement with the data obtained from the finite element (FE) model, which confirms the validity of the formula. With the FE model, the effects of the movement of the hair cells and fluid in the cochlear duct on the x-displacements of the inner stereocilia are studied. The results show that the movement of the hair cells affects the x-displacements of the inner stereocilia, especially for the shortest stereocilium, and the fluid in the cochlear duct affects the x-displacements of the inner stereocilia, especially for the middle stereocilium. Moreover, compared with the effects of the hair cells on the stereocilia, the effect of the cochlear duct fluid is greater. 展开更多

This paper presents the results of laboratory testing on a heavily compacted sand-bentonite mixture. To measure the soil-water retention curve (SWRC) of the mixture over a large range of suction, a pressure plate apparatus and filter papers were used. The obtained SWRC shows that the measurements via the two methods consistently agree with each other. By using a suction-controlled oedometer for unsaturated soils, a series of one-dimensional compression tests were performed on the unsaturated compacted sand-bentonite mixture at different constant suctions. The testing results indicate that the yield stress increases and compression index decreases with the increase of imposed suction. The results also demonstrate that the mixture wetted to saturation and subsequently dried to a certain suction level has a lower yield stress than that wetted directly to the same suction. 展开更多

In this paper, push-over analysis for tall concrete structures was made and a corresponding computer program was given. Several kinds of elements in the program were considered to meet the demand of tall buildings with complex structural type. These elements included beam-column element for beams and columns, single slice wall element and three vertical line element for walls, and tube-wall element for tubes. Computational example for verifying the models indicates that the result obtained by this method is identical with a well-known test result and the program can be used to search for the full process of structural reaction, even the softening stage of the structure. With this push-over analysis method, an actual tall building with complex structural type was analyzed, and the result has been put into practice of the structural design of the building. Gaomiaozi (GMZ) bentonite has been chosen as a possible matrix material of buffers/backfills in the deep geological disposal to isolate the high-level radioactive waste (HLRW) in China. In the Gaomiaozi deposit area, calcium bentonite in the near surface zone and sodium bentonite in the deeper zone are observed. The swelling characteristics of GMZ sodium and calcium bentonites and their mixtures with sand wetted with distilled water were studied in the present work. The test results show that the relationship be- tween the void ratio and swelling pressure of compacted GMZ bentonite-sand mixtures at full saturation is independent of the initial conditions such as the initial dry density and water content, hut dependent on the ratio of bentonite to sand. An empirical method was accordingly proposed allowing the prediction of the swelling deformation and swelling pressure with different initial densities and bentonite-sand ratios when in saturated conditions. Finally, the swelling capacities of GMZ Na- and Ca-bentonites and Kunigel Na-bentonite are compared. 展开更多

Elasticity solutions of stress and displacement for bi-modulus beams under combined loads are derived. The example analysis shows that the maximum tensile stress using the same elastic modulus theory is underestimated if the tensile elastic modulus is larger than the compressive elastic modulus. Otherwise, the maximum compressive stress is underestimated. The maximum tensile stress using the material mechanics solution is underestimated when the tensile elastic modulus is larger than the compressive elastic modulus to a certain extent. The error of stress using the material mechanics theory decreases as the span-to-height ratio of beams increases, which is apparent when L/h ≤ 5. The error also varies with the distributed load patterns. 展开更多

The model of the equipment is built applying the finite element method with flexible joints, and the seismic response of the equipment is analyzed using elastic time history method. On the base, according to the strength damage index and Monte-Carlo Method, the seismic damage ratios are counted and the seismic fragility curves are presented. Effects of concrete strength, slenderness of columns and eccentricity of the axial load are studied. The load-carrying capacity is reduced with increased slenderness ratio and eccentricity. Concrete strength has no obvious influence on eccentrically loaded columns. Then, a nonlinear numerical method of pin-ended slender columns is also presented. This method is applicable for determining the material failure load or buckling failure load of a slender steel reinforced concrete composite column. In this method both material and geometric nonlinearities are taken into account. The results of numerical analysis accord well with the test results. The test results are also compared with the results predicted by ACI318-05 and the China Specifications. 展开更多

In this paper, a new retrofit method, which utilized fiber-reinforced plastics (FRP) confinement mechanism and anchorage of embedded bars, was developed aiming to retrofit non-ductile large RC rectangular columns to prevent the damage of the plastic hinges. Carbon FRP (CFRP) sheets and glass FRP (GFRP) bars were used in this test, and five scaled RC columns were tested to examine the function of this new method for improving the ductility of columns. Responses of columns were examined before and after being retrofitted. Test results indicate that this new composite method can be very effective to improve the anti-seismic behavior of non-ductile RC columns compared with normal CFRP sheets retrofitted column. 展开更多

The instability at a bifurcation point can be analyzed with the theory of nonlinear dynamics, and that at a limit point can be discussed with the theory of elastoplasticity. In this paper, the nonlinear dynamic instability of structures was treated with mathematical and mechanical theories. The research methods for the problems of structural nonlinear dynamic stability were discussed first, and then the criterion of stability or instability of structures, the method to obtain the bifurcation point and the limit point, and the formulae of the directions of the branch solutions at a bifurcation point were elucidated. These methods can be applied to the problems of nonlinear dynamic instability of structures such as reticulated shells, space grid structures, and so on. According to the vibration characteristics of the organ of Corti (OC), seven hypotheses are made to simplify the structure of the model, and a mechanical OC model is established. Using the variational principle, a displacement analytical expression is solved under a certain pressure. The results are in good agreement with experimental data, showing the validity of the formula. Combined with the damage caused by noise in clinic, it is found that the hardening of outer hair cells and outer stereocilia can lead to loss of hearing and generation of threshold shift. In addition, the results show that high frequency resonance occurs at the bottom of the basilar membrane (BM), and low frequency resonance occurs at the top of the BM. This confirms the frequency selective characteristics of the BM. Further, using this formula can avoid interference of the envi- ronment and the technical level of the test personnel, and can evaluate performance of the OC objectively. 展开更多

Optimal distribution of reliability for a large network based on connectivity

It is a non-polynomial complexity problem to calculate connectivity of the complex network. When the system reliability cannot be expressed as a function of element reliability, we have to apply some heuristic methods for optimization based on connectivity of the network. The calculation structure of connectivity of complex network is analyzed in the paper. The coefficient matrixes of Taylor second order expansion of the system connectivity is generated based on the calculation structure of connectivity of complex network. An optimal schedule is achieved based on genetic algorithms (GA). Fitness of seeds is calculated using the Taylor expansion function of system connectivity. Precise connectivity of the optimal schedule and the Taylor expansion function of system connectivity can be achieved by the approved Minty method or the recursive decomposition algorithm. When error between approximate connectivity and the precise value exceeds the assigned value, the optimization process is continued using GA, and the Taylor function of system connectivity needs to be renewed. The optimization process is called iterative GA. Iterative GA can be used in the large network for optimal reliability attribution. One temporary optimal result will be generated every time in the iteration process. These temporary optimal results approach the real optimal results. They can be regarded as a group of approximate optimal results useful in the real project. 展开更多
