A transformer is an essential but expensive power delivery equipment for a distribution utility.In many distribution utilities worldwide,a sizable percentage of transformers are near the end of their designed life.At ...A transformer is an essential but expensive power delivery equipment for a distribution utility.In many distribution utilities worldwide,a sizable percentage of transformers are near the end of their designed life.At the same time,distribution utilities are adopting smart inverter-based distributed solar photovoltaic(SPV)systems to maximize renewable generation.The central objective of this paper is to propose a methodology to quantify the effect of smart inverter-based distributed SPV systems on the aging of distribution transformers.The proposed method is first tested on a modified IEEE-123 node distribution feeder.After that,the procedure is applied to a practical distribution system,i.e.,the Indian Institute of Technology(IIT)Roorkee campus,India.The transformer aging models,alongside advanced control functionalities of grid-tied smart inverter-based SPV systems,are implemented in MATLAB.The open-source simulation tool(OpenDSS)is used to model distribution networks.To analyze effectiveness of various inverter functionalities,time-series simulations are performed using exponential load models,considering daily load curves from multiple seasons,load types,current harmonics,etc.Findings show replacing a traditional inverter with a smart inverter-based SPV system can enable local reactive power generation and may extend the life of a distribution transformer.Simulation results demonstrate,simply by incorporating smart inverter-based SPV systems,transformer aging is reduced by 15%to 22%in comparison to SPV systems operating with traditional inverters.展开更多

This paper introduces a Takagi-Sugeno(T-S)fuzzy regulator design using the negative absolute eigenvalue(NAE)approach for a class of nonlinear and unstable systems.The open-loop system is initially embodied by the trad...This paper introduces a Takagi-Sugeno(T-S)fuzzy regulator design using the negative absolute eigenvalue(NAE)approach for a class of nonlinear and unstable systems.The open-loop system is initially embodied by the traditional T-S fuzzy model and then,all closed-loop subsystems are combined using the proposed Max-Min operator in place of traditional weighted average operator from the controller side to lessen the coupling virtually and simplify the proposed regulator design.For each virtually decoupled closed-loop subsystem,the composite regulators(i.e.,primary and secondary regulators)are designed by the NAE approach based on the enhanced eigenvalue analysis.The Lyapunov function is utilized to guarantee the asymptotic stability of the overall T-S fuzzy control system.The most popular and widely used nonlinear and unstable systems like the electromagnetic levitation system(EMLS)and the inverted cart pendulum(ICP)are simulated for the wide range of the initial conditions and the enormous variation in the disturbance.The transient and steady-state performance of the considered systems using the proposed design are analyzed in terms of the decay rate,settling time and integral errors as IAE,ISE,ITAE,and ITSE to validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach compared to the most popular and traditional parallel distributed compensation(PDC)approach.展开更多
Sensor platforms that exploit the fibrous textile threads as substrates offer great promise since they can be directly sewn,woven or stitched on to any clothing.They can also be placed directly in intimate contact wit...Sensor platforms that exploit the fibrous textile threads as substrates offer great promise since they can be directly sewn,woven or stitched on to any clothing.They can also be placed directly in intimate contact with the skin.In this work,we present a thread-based sensing platform in the form of a multiplexed sensing patch for continuous simultaneous on-skin monitoring of sweat.The patch performs real-time,on-body measurements of important biomarkers present in sweat such as electrolytes(sodium and ammonium ions),metabolites(lactate)and acidity(pH).Flexible threads coated with conductive inks were used as sensing electrodes.Selective potentiometric detection of electrolytes and pH was made possible through ion-selective membrane deposition and pH-sensitive polyaniline coating on threads,respectively.An amperometric enzymatic sensing scheme with lactate oxidase was used for the detection of lactate.An array of the thread sensors is integrated onto a patch with connectivity to a miniaturized circuit module containing a potentiostat,microprocessor and wireless circuitry for wireless smartphone readout.Extensive in vitro validation and an in vivo human pilot study involving a maximal exertion test show the promise of this platform for real-time physiological monitoring of human performance/fitness under stress,as well as diagnostic monitoring through sweat analysis.展开更多
