A Comparative Analysis of Syntactic Complexity in Applied Linguistics Abstracts Written by Chinese Novice Writers and Native English Advanced Writers

The rhetorical structure of abstracts has been a widely discussed topic, as it can greatly enhance the abstract writing skills of second-language writers. This study aims to provide guidance on the syntactic features that L2 learners can employ, as well as suggest which features they should focus on in English academic writing. To achieve this, all samples were analyzed for rhetorical moves using Hyland’s five-rhetorical move model. Additionally, all sentences were evaluated for syntactic complexity, considering measures such as global, clausal and phrasal complexity. The findings reveal that expert writers exhibit a more balanced use of syntactic complexity across moves, effectively fulfilling the rhetorical objectives of abstracts. On the other hand, MA students tend to rely excessively on embedded structures and dependent clauses in an attempt to increase complexity. The implications of these findings for academic writing research, pedagogy, and assessment are thoroughly discussed.

The Transmission of Huizhou Culture to Foreign Students in China-- Under the Context of Soft Power

Culture is an important aspect of soft power.Huizhou Culture is one of the best representations of traditional Chinese culture and has been attached great importance by scholars both at home and aboard.It's vitally important to spread Huizhou Cultural values around the world to improve China's soft power.Foreign students in China are potential advocators of Chinese Culture.The cultural information they get will be transmitted to their own countries.We should take some strategies to promote Huizhou Culture among foreign students so that the charm of Huizhou Culture can be noticed and recognized by many more people.

Motivation to Study a Second Foreign Language: A Case of Chinese University Learners of German

Not much research has been done on motivation to study a second,third or even fourth foreign language though learners of such languages have been increasing.To contribute to this,the present study examined German learning motivation of Chinese university students at different proficiency levels.A total of 297 German learners at three different proficiency levels at a university in Beijing filled in the questionnaires,of whom 191 answered the open-ended question and 50 were informally interviewed.Analyses of the data revealed the following major findings;(1)most respondents at cach proficiency level had limited access to and little chance to use German,liked the language,studied it(very)hard and did not think the language was difficult,(2)students at different proficiency levels studied German for similar reasons such as major study/research,further education,future career,interest in foreign language learning and German,and(3)students at higher proficiency levels perceived German to be more difficult and worked harder on it.Students at higher proficiency levels were both integratively and instrumentally more motivated to study German and had greater motivation intensity as well.It is clear that students at different proficiency levels were motivated to study German and that students at the advanced level tended to be more integratively motivated than those at the beginning level.Based on these findings,some suggestions are discussed.

On ecological inheritance construction of intangible cultural heritage in era of intellectual media

It is known that intangible cultural heritage is an important resource of the cultural soft power in a country, and it is also an organic component and representation of national history, spirit and cohesion.Therefore, a good inheritance of intangible cultural heritage is of great significance for carrying forward the ethical basis of human culture as well as maintaining its value core. Nowadays, the rapid intelligentization of media has ushered in the era of intellectual media, with characteristics of “massive media, man-machine integration and self-evolution”. In the era of intellectual media, traces of intelligent technologies can be seen everywhere, and the ecology of the inheritance of intangible cultural heritage has been reconstructed. Under this circumstance, the author firstly makes clarification of the advancement of the era, which has given a new logic of intangible cultural heritage inheritance, and various intelligent powers should be developed including intelligent acquisition, processing and judgement ability of content value. Then, the technology empowerment is analyzed, which has made reconstruction of intangible cultural heritage inheritance: while being digitalized,the inheritance of intangible cultural heritage has become systematized in way of “Points, Lines and Planes” at the same time. Therefore, the communication ecology of intangible cultural heritage could be established as a new approach of inheritance via all sorts of intelligent technologies, so as to promote Chinese cultural soft power and enhance our national image in the long run.

Shakespeare’s Brave Women and Brave World--A Topological Study of His Juliet,Portia and Cordelia

Juliet,Portia and Cordelia are three heroines in plays of King Lear,Romeo and Juliet and The Merchant of Venice written by Shakespeare.Although they are endowed with various personalities,the three women have all shown a brave trait in their character,which makes them become the representatives of brave women.Deformation and equivalence are two important terms used to describe the deduction of topological spaces.From a topological perspective,the thesis purports to study and interpret the distinctive and vivid artistic images of Juliet,Portia and Cordelia,finding that their diverse artistic images and similar bravery are in response to the transformation and equivalence in literary metaphorical topological spaces.It helps to explain the reason why Shakespeare had created so many colorful female images.In this sense,this paper provides a new point of view and a new mechanism to interpret Shakespeare’s plays.

Interpretation of Lolita’s Characters of Lolita from the Perspective of Reader-response Criticism

Reader-response criticism,which began in the 1960s,differs from traditional literary criticism in that it emphasizes that criticism should be reader-centered,believing that the meaning of a work lies in the act of the reader and the reading process.The true artistic and appreciation value of a work is realized only after the author publishes it and after it has been read by readers.American writer Vladimir Nabokov’s“Lolita”has since its publication been attracting a large number of readers to read it,analyze it from different angles and there is contradictory sometimes;perhaps it is the contradictory views that have made it so famous that readers continue to study it from new points of view.This paper focuses on the controversial heroine’s character in the novel by applying the three aspects of reader-response criticism:horizon of expectation,expect reconstruction and response-inviting structure.

A Feminist Reading of Hemingway’s Works-“Cat in the Rain”as an Example

As a famous American writer,there have been many different opinions on whether Hemingway is a typical masculinist writer.Through a brief analysis of the feminist consciousness in Hemingway’s works and a detailed feminist interpretation of“Cat in the Rain”,this paper holds that it is unfair and biased to stereotype Hemingway as a typical masculinist writer since there is a very strong feminist consciousness in his early works.

Exploring well-being disparities between urban and rural areas:A case study in the Stavropol Territory,Russia

Rural areas are crucial for a country’s sustainable economy.New strategies are needed to develop rural areas to improve the well-being of rural population and generate new job opportunities.This is especially important in countries where agricultural production accounts for a significant share of the gross product,such as Russia.In this study,we identified the key indicators of satisfaction and differences between rural and urban citizens based on their social,economic,and environmental backgrounds,and determined whether there are well-being disparities between rural and urban areas in the Stavropol Territory,Russia.We collected primary data through a survey based on the European Social Survey framework to investigate the potential differences between rural and urban areas.By computing the regional well-being index using principal component analysis,we found that there was no statistically significant difference in well-being between rural and urban areas.Results of key indicators showed that rural residents felt psychologically more comfortable and safer,assessed their family relationships better,and adhered more to traditions and customs.However,urban residents showed better economic and social conditions(e.g.,infrastructures,medical care,education,and Internet access).The results of this study imply that we can better understand the local needs,advantages,and unique qualities,thereby gaining insight into the effectiveness of government programs.Policy-makers and local authorities can consider targeted interventions based on the findings of this study and strive to enhance the well-being of both urban and rural residents.

Research on the Content Validity of the CET-4 Fast Reading Test

Content validity is an important part of language testing.In this paper,the content validity of the CET-4 fast reading test is analyzed in terms of expected response and text input.The result of final research shows that the content validity of the fast reading test is high with some limitations proposed.

Analysis of Iconicity Base on Relevance Theory

Iconicity as one of the very important research items of cognitive linguistics refers to the natural, non-arbitrary rela?tionship between form and meaning. The study of iconicity has great significance of revealing the relationship between concept and cognition and can help people better understand the essence of language. This paper presents an analysis of the three iconicity principles- distance iconicity,quantity iconicity and sequencing iconicity-base on the relevance theory. The purpose of this pa?per is to offer a new dimension to iconicity analysis and finding more connections between the form of language and real mean?ing.

Impacts of Climatic Factors on Runoff Coefficients in Source Regions of the Huanghe River

Runoff coefficients of the source regions of the Huanghe River in 1956–2000 were analyzed in this paper. In the 1990s runoff of Tangnaihai Hydrologic Station of the Huanghe River experienced a serious decrease, which had at- tracted considerable attention. Climate changes have important impact on the water resources availability. From the view of water cycling, runoff coefficients are important indexes of water resources in a particular catchment. Kalinin baseflow separation technique was improved based on the characteristics of precipitation and streamflow. After the separation of runoff coefficient (R/P), baseflow coefficient (Br/P) and direct runoff coefficient (Dr/P) were estimated. Statistic analyses were applied to assessing the impact of precipitation and temperature on runoff coefficients (including Dr/P, Br/P and R/P). The results show that in the source regions of the Huanghe River, mean annual baseflow coefficient was higher than mean annual direct runoff coefficient. Annual runoff coefficients were in direct proportion to annual pre- cipitation and in inverse proportion to annual mean temperature. The decrease of runoff coefficients in the 1990s was closely related to the decrease in precipitation and increase in temperature in the same period. Over different sub-basins of the source regions of the Huanghe River, runoff coefficients responded differently to precipitation and temperature. In the area above Jimai Hydrologic Station where annual mean temperature is –3.9oC, temperature is the main factor in- fluencing the runoff coefficients. Runoff coefficients were in inverse relation to temperature, and precipitation had nearly no impact on runoff coefficients. In subbasin between Jimai and Maqu Hydrologic Station Dr/P was mainly affected by precipitation while R/P and Br/P were both significantly influenced by precipitation and temperature. In the area be-tween Maqu and Tangnaihai hydrologic stations all the three runoff coefficients increased with the rising of annual precipitation, while direct runoff coefficient was inversely proportional to temperature. In the source regions of the Huanghe River with the increase of average annual temperature, the impacts of temperature on runoff coefficients be-come insignificant.

RAPD Analysis of M_1 Generation of Gladiolus hybridus Hort Treated by EMS

Gladiolus hybridus Hort is one of the world＇s famous cutting flowers. It is very popular because of the big size, bright color, various shape, and long period of bloom. New species should be cultivated in order to meet the consumers＇ need of asking for the new. Among the technologies of cultivating new species of flowers, mutagenic breeding is a shortcut. This study treated corm bud of G. hybridus Hort with EMS of different consistency. Then M1 after treated was analyzed by RAPD. The result showed that EMS was a very effective mutagenic agent for the corm bud of G. hybridus Hort. With the increase of consistency, the mutagenic range increased first, then decreased, among which 0.6% EMS treatment had the biggest influence. However, with the same EMS consistency, there was not close relevancy between the amount of mutagenic agent and the divergence of plant＇s genomes, which offered a molecular basis for selecting plants with good mutation.

English Forum on Medical Humanities of SMMU:An interdisciplinary innovative teaching practice

To conform to the college English teaching reform from English for General Purposes (EGP) to English for Academic Purposes (EAP) in the vital transfer era, the Foreign Language Department of Second Military Medical University (SMMU) launched an English for Medical Academic Purpose (EMAP) curriculum with English Forum on Medical Humanities (EFMH), a project-based teaching practice. Based on Rogers' learner-centered humanistic teaching approach which emphasizes students' involvement and experiences in learning, EFMH puts students and their practice in a central place. After four-year exploration and operation, the Forum has developed from a small-scaled embryo into an internationalized, standardized and professionalized event, having produced fruitful outcomes. It is expected that the success of EFMH will provide inspiring experiences and enlightenments for higher medical education in terms of academic English teaching and teachers' responsibilities to foster high-quality medical students.

Clinical study inpatient-reported outcomes after binocular implantation of aspheric intraocular lens of different negative spherical aberrations

Objective: To compare patient-reported outcomes after implantation of the ZA9003 intraocular lens(IOLs), or the MCX11 ASP IOLs or the spherical IOLs(HQ-201HEP). Methods: Prospective nonrandomized controlled trial was used. A total of 105 patients(210 eyes) were divided into three groups according to the type of IOLs: ZA9003(35 patients, 70 eyes), MCX11 ASP(35 patients, 70 eyes) or HQ-201HEP(35 patients, 70 eyes). The main outcome was scores of Catquest nine-item short-form questionnaire. Additional outcome was best corrected visual acuities, spherical aberration(SA) and total higher-order aberrations(HOAs). Results: The global score was significantly lower in the spherical IOL group than the aspherical IOL group of-020 μm SA(P < 0.05) and the aspherical IOL group of-027 μm SA(P < 0.05), and no significant difference was found in the global score between the aspherical IOL group of-020 μm SA than the aspherical IOL group of-027 μm SA(P > 0.05). Significant differences were also found in question 2, question 5, question 6 and question 8 between the spherical IOLs and the aspherical IOLs. Conclusion: Implantation of an aspherical IOL could improve vision-related quality of life compared with a spherical IOL. However, there were no statistically significant differences in vision-related quality of life between aspheric IOLs with different negative spherical aberrations.

INVESTIGATION ON STABILITY OF PZT/EPOXY PIEZOCOMPOSITE WITH PRESSURE AND TEMPERATURE

With the universal test machine and temperature test chamber, the effect of pressure and temperature on the behavior of 1-3 and 1-3-2 piezocomposites prepared with PZT/epoxy in our lab has been investigated through electrical impedance and dielectric analysis. The permittivity, resonant frequency and dielectric loss of the composites have been measured under vertical stress and temperature, and the variety of the material properties under pressure and temperature could also be obtained. The pressure and temperature stability of the composites have been assessed through experiments. The data of these two types of composites indicated that the stability of 1-342 composite with pressure was better than that of 1-3 composite, and two composites have almost the same dielectric stability with temperature. However, 1-3-2 composite showed slower frequency variation than 1-3 composite.

The two-factor model of evaluating mining rights of coal resources based on options

MRCR could be regarded as a multi-stage compounding real option,based on option theory,assuming the convenience yield of coal reserves to be constant,built a one-factor model of valuating MRCR with the stochastic value of coal reserves.On the basis of our one-factor model,set up a two-factor model of evaluating MRCR assuming the convenience yield follows the mean-reverting process.When applied to valuate the MRCR of a coalmine,this model gives higher values than the one-factor model and the NPV.This is because the increase of convenience yield can improve the executive oppor- tunity of MRCR.

Regional Studies and the Cultural Rise Strategy of the＂ One Belt and One Road＂ Developmental Concept

The developmental concept of "One Belt and One Road" epitomizes the basic ideology of the Chinese Dream of Chinese cultural renaissance and shows the cultural explanatory power and innovatory power keeping pace with time. Concerning the detailed analysis of the theoretical system of"One Belt and One Road",there lacks a universal theoretical framework and the foundation of the Chinese philosophy and literature."One Belt and One Road"is not only a new developmental strategy,but also a new proposition for reconstruction of our cultural status.

Investigations and thoughts of the ethics in genetic discrimination

A questionnaire research in ethics was conducted to get the view of students of medical universities in Shanghai on genomics and genetic discrimination. We find that 66% respondents indicated their willingness to understand the genetic information and 79% of respondents mind their own genetic information be aware of by other people. In contrast, 77% of the respondents believe that medical organization are not able to protect personal genetic information from disclose. Hence, it is significant to take some measures to preserve citizen's genetic information privacy. Depending on our results, we put forward our suggestion to this problem.
