The simulation results show that the probability of selecting a high Modulation and Coding Scheme (MCS) level increased as the Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) improved. Furthermore, the D-STTD communication system with AMC scheme provided a more uniform throughput distribution throughout the entire SNR range compared to its counterpart which did not apply AMC scheme. Also, the maximum throughput of the D-STTD communication system with AMC scheme was twice that of a conventional AMC communication system or a Space Time Transmit Diversity (STTD) communication system with AMC scheme.展开更多

The improved CLPC scheme, combining delay compensation algorithms and pilot diversity, is mainly applied to the ancillary ter-restrial component (ATC). ATC link in urban areas, because it is more suitable to the short round-trip delay (RTD). In the case of rural areas, where ATCs are not deployed or where a signal is not received from ATCs, transmit power monitoring equipment and OLPC schemes using efficient pilot diversity are combined and ap-plied to the link between the user's equipment and the satellite. Two modified power control schemes are ap-plied equally to the boundary areas where two kinds of signals are received in order to ensure coverage conti-nuity. Simulation results show that the improved power control scheme has good performance compared to conventional power control schemes in a geostationary earth orbit (GEO) satellite system utilizing ATCs.展开更多

However, there have been few reports on changes in cognitive ability in elderly subjects following highly concentrated oxygen administration. This study investigated changes in cognitive ability, blood oxygen saturation (%), and heart rate (beats/min) in normal elderly subjects at three different levels of oxygen [21% (1 L/min), 93% (1 L/min), and 93% (5 L/min)] administered during a 1-back task. Eight elderly male (75.3 + 4.3 years old) and 10 female (71.1 + 3.9 years old) subjects, who were normal in cognitive ability as shown by a score of more than 24 points in the Mini-Mental State Examination-Korea, participated in the experiment. The experiment consisted of an adaptation phase after the start of oxygen administration (3 minutes), a control phase to obtain stable baseline measurements of heart rate and blood oxygen saturation before the task (2 minutes) and a task phase during which the 1-back task was performed (2 minutes). Three levels of oxygen were administered throughout the three phases (7 minutes). Blood oxygen saturation and heart rate were measured during each phase. Our results show that blood oxygen saturation increased, heart rate decreased, and response time in the 1-back task decreased as the concentration and amount of administered oxygen increased. This shows that administration of sufficient oxygen for optimal cognitive functioning increases blood oxygen saturation and decreases heart rate.展开更多

However, little is known about the aging effects in diverse cognitive abilities, such as spatial learning and reasoning. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of aging on spatial cognitive performance and regional brain activation based on fMRI. DESIGN, TIME, AND SETTING: A block design for fMRI observation. This study was performed at the fMRI Laboratory, Brain Science Research Center, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology from March 2006 to May 2009. PARTICIPANTS: Eight right-handed, male, college students in their 20s (mean age 21.5 years) and six right-handed, male, adults in their 40s (mean age 45.7 years), who graduated from college, participated in the study. All subjects were healthy and had no prior history of psychiatric or neurological disorders. METHODS: A spatial task was presented while brain images were acquired using a 3T fMRI system (ISOL Technology, Korea). The spatial tasks involved selecting a shape that corresponded to a given figure using four examples, as well as selecting a development figure of a diagram. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The accuracy rate (number of correct answers/total number of items x 100%) of spatial tasks was calculated. Using the subtraction procedure, the activated areas in the brain during spatial tasks were color-coded by T-score. The double subtraction method was used to analyze the effect of aging between the two age groups (20s versus 40s). RESULTS: The cerebellum, occipital lobe, parietal lobe, and frontal lobe were similarly activated in the two age groups. Increased brain activations, however, were observed in bilateral parietal and superior frontal lobes of the younger group. More activation was observed in bilateral middle frontal and right inferior frontal lobes in the older group. Compared with the older group, the younger men exhibited greater spatial performance (P = 0.012). CONCLUSION: Reduced cognitive function correlated with decreased activation areas in the parietal lobe and altered activation in the frontal lobe.展开更多

A solution of this contradictory behavior is to increase the length of the window which in turn requires more hardware hence increasing the cost of system. This paper proposes a novel window based on two shifted hyperbolic tangent functions. The proposed window contains an adjustable parameter, with the help of which desired time and frequency domain characteristics may be achieved for relatively shorter window length. The characteristics of the proposed window are compared with those of the two well-known adjustable windows namely Cosh window and Exponential window. MATLAB simulation results show that for the same value of window length, the proposed window provides improved output, and thus it makes a good compromise between minimum stopband attenuation and half main-lobe width compared to the windows mentioned previously.展开更多

It is based on cascaded polarization interference filter (PIF). The period and bandpass width of each PIF are decided by its optical path difference between o-ray and e-ray (OPDOE). When their OPDOEs are proportionately designed, the tuning range and bandpass width depend on OPDOE in the first and the last PIF, respectively. The tuning range, bandpass width and crosstalk are independent each other. The crosstalk is related to the OPDOE ratios among PIFs and can be suppressed by designing the PIF's OPDOE. A set of OPDOE is suggested that are l1, 2 × l1, 22 ×l1, 23 ×l1, 24 ×l1, ..., 2N-4 × l1, 15 × 2N-7 ×l1, 10 × 2N-6 × l1 and 2N-2 ×l1 from the first to the last. This suggested OPDOEs can yield -50-dB crosstalk for any tuning range and bandpass width. The insert loss is less than 1 dB. As its loose alignment requirement, there is no limitation on cascaded PIF number. When 11 PIFs are cascaded, it can achieve 170-nm tuning range, -50-dB crosstalk, bandpass width applicable to 25-GHz channel spacing and 1 dB insert loss.展开更多
