An fKdV equation of two-layer how and an averaged fKdV equation (AfKdV equation) with respect to phase are derived to determine the theoretical amplitude and period of the precursor solitons in the present paper. In terms of the AfKdV equation derived by the authors, a new theory on the precursor soliton generation based on Lee et al.'s concept is presented. Concepts of asymptotic mean hydraulic fall and level are introduced in our analysis, and the theoretical amplitude and period both depend on the asymptotic mi-an levels and stratified parameters. From the present theoretical results, it is obtained that when the moving velocity of the topography is at the resonant points, there exist two general relations: (1) amplitude relation (A) over circle = 2F, (2) period relation <(tau)over circle> = -8m(1)m(3)(-1)root 6m(4)m(3)(-1)F, in which (A) over circle and <(tau)over circle> are the amplitude and period of the precursor solitons at the resonant points respectively, m(1), m(3) and m(4) are coefficients of the fKdV equation, and F is asymptotic mean half-hydraulic fall at subcritical cutoff points. The theoretical results of this paper are compared with experiments and numerical calculations of two-layer flow over a semicircular topography and all these results are in good agreement. Due to the canonical character of the coefficients of fKdV equations, this theory also holds for any two-dimensional system, which can be reduced to fKdV equations. 展开更多

The thin fluid film approximation is imposed. The height of the thin film satisfies a nonlinear diffusion equation with a source/sink term. The Lie point symmetries of the nonlinear diffusion equation are derived and exist, which provided the fluid velocity at the base, <em>vn</em> satisfies a first order linear partial differential equation. The general form has algebraic time dependence while a special case has exponential time dependence. The solution in which <em>vn</em> is proportional to the height of the thin film is studied. The width of the base always increases with time even for suction while the height decreases with time for sufficiently weak blowing. The streamlines of the fluid flow inside the thin film are plotted by first solving a cubic equation. For sufficiently weak blowing there is a dividing streamline, emanating from the stagnation point on the centre line which separates the fluid flow into two regions, a lower region consisting of rising fluid and dominated by fluid injection at the base and an upper region consisting of descending fluid and dominated by spreading due to gravity. For sufficiently strong blowing the lower region expands to completely fill the whole thin film. 展开更多

The paper presents the basic model for the transmission dynamics of West Nile virus (WNV). The model, which consists of seven mutually-exclusive compartments representing the birds and vector dynamics, has a locally-asymptotically stable disease- free equilibrium whenever the associated reproduction number (R0) is less than unity. As reveal in [3, 20], the analyses of the model show the existence of the phenomenon of backward bifurcation (where the stable disease-free equilibrium of the model co-exists with a stable endemic equilibrium when the reproduction number of the disease is less than unity). It is shown, that the backward bifurcation phenomenon can be removed by substituting the associated standard incidence function with a mass action incidence. Analysis of the reproduction number of the model shows that, the disease will persist, whenever R0 〉 1, and increase in the length of incubation period can help reduce WNV burden in the community if a certain threshold quantities, denoted by △b and △v are negative. On the other hand, increasing the length of the incubation period increases disease burden if △b 〉 0 and △v 〉 0. Furthermore, it is shown that adding time delay to the corresponding autonomous model with standard incidence (considered in [2]) does not alter the qualitative dynamics of the autonomous :system (with respect to the elimination or persistence of the disease). 展开更多

The aim of this investigation is to determine the effect of fluid leak-off (suction) and fluid injection (blowing) at the horizontal base on the two-dimensional spreading under the gravity of a thin film of viscous incompressible fluid by studying the evolution of the streamlines in the thin film. It is assumed that the normal component of the fluid velocity at the base is proportional to the spatial gradient of the height of the film. Lie symmetry methods for partial differential equations are applied. The invariant solution for the surface profile is derived. It is found that the thin fluid film approximation is satisfied for weak to moderate leak-off and for the whole range of fluid injection. The streamlines are derived and plotted by solving a cubic equation numerically. For fluid injection, there is a dividing streamline originating at the stagnation point at the base which separates the flow into two regions, a lower region consisting mainly of rising fluid and an upper region consisting mainly of descending fluid. An approximate analytical solution for the dividing streamline is derived. It generates an approximate V-shaped surface along the length of the two-dimensional film with the vertex of each section the stagnation point. It is concluded that the fluid flow inside the thin film can be visualised by plotting the streamlines. Other models relating the fluid velocity at the base to the height of the thin film can be expected to contain a dividing streamline originating at a stagnation point and dividing the flow into a lower region of rising fluid and an upper region of descending fluid. 展开更多

The paper explores the gravity-driven flow of the thin film of a viscoelastic-fluid-based nanofluids(VFBN)along an inclined plane under non-isothermal conditions and subjected to convective cooling at the free-surface.The Newton’s law of cooling is used to model the convective heat-exchange with the ambient at the free-surface.The Giesekus viscoelastic constitutive model, with appropriate modifications to account for non-isothermal effects,is employed to describe the polymeric effects. The unsteady and coupled non-linear partial differential equations(PDEs)describing the model problem are obtained and solved via efficient semi-implicit numerical schemes based on finite difference methods(FDM)implemented in Matlab. The response of the VFBN velocity,temperature,thermal-conductivity and polymeric-stresses to variations in the volume-fraction of embedded nanoparticles is investigated. It is shown that these quantities all increase as the nanoparticle volume-fraction becomes higher. 展开更多

In the hyperbolic research community, there exists the strong belief that a continuous Galerkin scheme is notoriously unstable and additional stabilization terms have to be added to guarantee stability. In the first part of the series[6],the application of simultaneous approximation terms for linear problems is investigated where the boundary conditions are imposed weakly.By applying this technique, the authors demonstrate that a pure continu-ous Galerkin scheme is indeed linearly stable if the boundary conditions are imposed in the correct way.In this work,we extend this investigation to the nonlinear case and focus on entropy conservation.By switching to entropy variables,we provide an estimation of the boundary operators also for nonlinear problems, that guarantee conservation. In numerical simulations,we verify our theoretical analysis. 展开更多

The spread of Lassa fever infection is increasing in West Africa over the last decade. The impact of this can better be understood when considering the various possible transmission routes. We designed a mathematical model for the epidemiology of Lassa Fever using a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations to determine the effect of transmission pathways toward the infection progression in humans and rodents including those usually neglected such as the environmental surface and aerosol routes. We analyzed the model and carried out numerical simulations to determine the impact of each transmission routes. Our results showed that the burden of Lassa fever infection is increased when all the transmission routes are incorporated and most single transmission routes are less harmful, but when in combination with other transmission routes, they increase the Lassa fever burden. It is therefore important to consider multiple transmission routes to better estimate the Lassa fever burden optimally and in turn determine control strategies targeted at the transmission pathways. 展开更多

In this paper, we introduce new concepts of a-type F-contractive mappings which are essentially weaker than the class of F-contractive mappings given in [21, 22] and different from a-GF-contractions given in [8]. Then, sufficient conditions for the existence and uniqueness of fixed point are established for these new types of contractive mappings, in the setting of complete metric space. Consequently, the obtained results encompass various generalizations of the Banach contraction principle. Moreover, some examples and an application to nonlinear fractional differential equation are given to illustrate the usability of the new theory. 展开更多

Theoretical mean wave resistance and regional division of the energy of single-layer flow over topogra-phy is studied at the near-resonant region in the weakly nonlinear, long wave limit. The theoretical meanwave resistance is determined in terms of the 1st and 2nd conservation laws of the fKdV equation. It isproved by the asymptotic mean method that the theoretical mean wave resistance depends only on the intensityand moving velocity of the topography. The theoretical results of this paper are in good agreement withnumerical calculations. Comparisons between the theoretical and numerical results showed that the theoryof the present paper holds for any small compact topography. 展开更多

A new computational method for solving the fifth order Korteweg-de Vries (fKdV) equation is proposed. The nonlinear partial differential equation is discretized in space using the discrete singular convolution (DSC) scheme and an exponential time integration scheme combined with the best rational approximations based on the Carathéodory-Fejér procedure for time discretization. We check several numerical results of our approach against available analytical solutions. In addition, we computed the conservation laws of the fKdV equation. We find that the DSC approach is a very accurate, efficient and reliable method for solving nonlinear partial differential equations. 展开更多

Strain-rate frequency superposition(SRFS) is often employed to probe the low-frequency behavior of soft solids under oscillatory shear in anticipated linear response. However, physical interpretation of an apparently well-overlapped master curve generated by SRFS has to combine with nonlinear analysis techniques such as Fourier transform rheology and stress decomposition method. The benefit of SRFS is discarded when some inconsistencies of the shifted master curves with the canonical linear response are observed. In this work, instead of evaluating the SRFS in full master curves, two criteria were proposed to decompose the original SRFS data and to delete the bad experimental data. Application to Carabopol suspensions indicates that good master curves could be constructed based upon the modified data and the high-frequency deviations often observed in original SRFS master curves are eliminated. The modified SRFS data also enable a better quantitative description and the evaluation of the apparent structural relaxation time by the two-mode fractional Maxwell model. 展开更多

This study presents a genetic-ecology modeling framework for assessing the combined impacts of insecticide resistance, temperature variability, and insecticide-based interventions on the population abundance and control of malaria mosquitoes by genotype.Rigorous analyses of the model we developed reveal that the boundary equilibrium with only mosquitoes of homozygous sensitive(resistant)genotype is locally-asymptotically stable whenever a certain ecological threshold, denoted by R^(SS)_(0) eR^(RR)_(0) T,is less than one.Furthermore, genotype i drives genotype j to extinction whenever R j 0>1 and R i 0<1(where i,j SS or RR,with i s j).The model exhibits the phenomenon of bistability when both thresholds are less than one.In such a bistable situation, convergence to any of the two boundary equilibria depends on the initial allele distribution in the state variables of the model.Furthermore,in this bistable case, where maxfR^(SS)_(0);R^(RR)_(0)g<1,the basin of attraction of the boundary equilibrium of the mosquito genotype with lower value of the ecological threshold is larger.Specifically, the basin of attraction of the boundary equilibrium for genotype i is larger than that of genotype j if R^(i)_(0)<R^(j)_(0)<1.When both ecological thresholds exceed one eminfR^(SS)_(0);R^(RR)_(0)g>1T,the two boundary equilibria lose their stability, and a coexistence equilibrium(where all three mosquito genotypes coexist)becomes locally-asymptotically stable.Global sensitivity analysis shows that the key parameters that greatly influence the dynamics and population abundance of resistant mosquitoes include the proportion of new adult mosquitoes that are females, the insecticide-induced mortality rate of adult female mosquitoes, the coverage level and efficacy of adulticides used in the community, the oviposition rates for eggs of heterozygous and homozygous resistant genotypes, and the modification parameter accounting for the reduction in insecticide-induced mortality due to resistance.Numerical simulations show that the adult mosquito population increases with increasing temperature until a peak is reached at 31C,and declines thereafter.Simulating the model for moderate and high adulticide coverage, together with varying fitness costs of resistance, shows a switch in the dominant genotype at equilibrium as temperature is varied. In other words, this study shows that, for certain combinations of adulticide coverage and fitness costs of insecticide resistance, increases in temperature could result in effective management of resistance(by causing the switch from a stable resistant-only boundary equilibrium(at 18C)to a stable sensitive-only boundary equilibrium(at 25C)).Finally,this study shows that, for moderate fitness costs of resistance,density-dependent larval mortality suppresses the total population of adult mosquitoes with the resistant allele for all temperature values in the range[18Ce36C]. 展开更多

The novel coronavirus(COVID-19)pandemic that emerged from Wuhan city in December 2019 overwhelmed health systems and paralyzed economies around the world. It became the most important public health challenge facing mankind since the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic.Various theoretical and empirical approaches have been designed and used to gain insight into the transmission dynamics and control of the pandemic. This study presents a primer for formulating, analysing and simulating mathematical models for understanding the dynamics of COVID-19.Specifically,we introduce simple compartmental,Kermack-McKendrick-type epidemic models with homogeneously-and heterogeneously-mixed populations,an endemic model for assessing the potential population-level impact of a hypothetical COVID-19 vaccine. We illustrate how some basic non-pharmaceutical interventions against COVID-19 can be incorporated into the epidemic model.A brief overview of other kinds of models that have been used to study the dynamics of COVID-19,such as agent-based,network and statistical models,is also presented.Possible extensions of the basic model,as well as open challenges associated with the formulation and theoretical analysis of models for COVID-19 dynamics, are suggested. 展开更多

More than 20outbreaks of Ebola virus disease have occurred in Africa since 1976,and yet no adequate treatment is available.Hence, prevention, control measures and supportive treatment remain the only means to avoid the disease.Among these measures, contact tracing occupies a prominent place. In this paper,we propose a simple mathematical model that incorporates imperfect contact tracing, quarantine and hospitalization (or isolation). The control reproduction number Rc of each sub-model and for the full model are computed.Theoretically,we prove that when Tic is less than one,the corresponding model has a unique globally asymptotically stable disease-free equilibrium.Conversely, when Rc is greater than one,the disease-free equilibrium becomes unstable and a unique globally asymptotically stable endemic equilibrium arises.Furthermore,we numerically support the analytical results and assess the efficiency of different control strategies. Our main observation is that,to eradicate EVD,the combination of high contact tracing (up to 90%)and effective isolation is better than all other control measures,namely:(1) perfect contact tracing,(2)effective isolation or full hospitalization,(3)combination of medium contact tracing and medium isolation. 展开更多

India has been the latest global epicenter for COVID-19,a novel coronavirus disease that emerged in China in late 2019.We present a base mathematical model for the transmission dynamics of COVID-19 in India and its neighbor,Pakistan. The base model was rigorously analyzed and parameterized using cumulative COVID-19 mortality data from each of the two countries. The model was used to assess the population-level impact of the control and mitigation strategies implemented in the two countries(notably non-pharmaceutical interventions).Numerical simulations of the basic model indicate that, based on the current baseline levels of the control and mitigation strategies implemented, the pandemic trajectory in India is on a downward trend. This downward trend will be reversed, and India will be recording mild outbreaks,if the control and mitigation strategies are relaxed from their current levels.By early September 2021,our simulations suggest that India could record up to 460,000 cumulative deaths under baseline levels of the implemented control strategies, while Pakistan(where the pandemic is comparatively milder)could see over 24,000 cumulative deaths at current mitigation levels. The basic model was extended to assess the impact of back-and-forth mobility between the two countries.Simulations of the resulting metapopulation model show that the burden of the COVID-19 pandemic in Pakistan increases with increasing values of the average time residents of India spend in Pakistan, with daily mortality in Pakistan peaking in mid-August to mid-September of 2021.Under the respective baseline control scenarios, our simulations show that the backand-forth mobility between India and Pakistan could delay the time-to-elimination of the COVID-19 pandemic in India and Pakistan to November 2022 and July 2022,respectively. 展开更多

Bulk-surface partial differential equations(BS-PDEs)are prevalent in manyapplications such as cellular, developmental and plant biology as well as in engineeringand material sciences.Novel numerical methods for BS-PDEs in three space dimensions(3D)are sparse. In this work,we present a bulk-surface virtual elementmethod(BS-VEM)for bulk-surface reaction-diffusion systems,a form of semilinearparabolic BS-PDEs in 3D.Unlike previous studies in two space dimensions(2D),the3D bulk is approximated with general polyhedra, whose outer faces constitute a flatpolygonal approximation of the surface. For this reason, the method is restricted tothe lowest order case where the geometric error is not dominant. The BS-VEM guaranteesall the advantages of polyhedral methods such as easy mesh generation andfast matrix assembly on general geometries.Such advantages are much more relevantthan in 2D.Despite allowing for general polyhedra, general nonlinear reaction kineticsand general surface curvature, the method only relies on nodal values without needingadditional evaluations usually associated with the quadrature of general reactionkinetics. This latter is particularly costly in 3D.The BS-VEM as implemented in thisstudy retains optimal convergence of second order in space. 展开更多
