A note on overshoot estimation in pole placements

In this note we show that for a given controllable pair (A, B) and any λ > 0, a gain matrix K can be chosen so that the transition matrix e {(A+BK)t} of the system x = (A + BK) x decays at the exponential rate e ?λt and the overshoot of the transition matrix can be bounded by Mλ L for some constants M and L that are independent of λ. As a consequence, for any h > 0, a gain matrix K can be chosen so that the magnitude of the transition matrix e (A+BK)t can be reduced by 1/2 (or by any given portion) over [0, h]. An interesting application of the result is in the stabilization of switched linear systems with any given switching rate.

Integral—Type Darboux Transformations for the mKdV Hierarchy with Self—COnsistent Sources

We present integral-type Darboux transformation for the mKdV hierarchy and for the mKdV hierarchy withself-consistent sources. In contrast with the normal Darboux transformation, the integral-type Darboux transformationscan offer non-auto-Backlund transformation between two (2n + 1)-th mKdV equations with self-consistent sources withdifferent degrees. This kind of Darboux transformation enables us to construct the N-soliton solution for the mKdVhierarchy with self-consistent sources. We also propose the formulas for the m times repeated integral-type Darbouxtransformations for both mKdV hierarchy and mKdV hierarchy with self-consistent sources.

Organizing Filament of Small Amplitude Scroll Waves

We theoretically analyze the organizing filament of small amplitude scroll waves in general excitable media by perturbation method and explicitly give the expressions of coefficients in Keener theory. In particular for the excitable media with equal diffusion, we obtain a close system for the motion of the filament. With an example of the Oregonator model, our results are in good agreement with those simulated by Winfree.

Numerical simulation of elastic wave propagation based on the transversely isotropic BISQ equation

The Biot and Squirt-flow are the two most important mechanisms of fluid flow in the porous medium with fluids. Based on the BISQ (Biot-Squirt) model where the two mechanisms are treated simultaneously, dispersion and attenuation of elastic waves in the porous medium are widely investigated in recent years. However, we have not read any reports on numerical simulation based on the BISQ equation. In this paper, following the BISQ equation, elastic wave propagation in the transversely isotropic porous medium filled with fluids is simulated by the stag-gered grid method for different frequency and phase boundary cases and the two-layer medium. And propagating characteristics of seismic and acoustic waves and various phenomena occured in the propagating process are in-vestigated when the two mechanisms are considered simultaneously.

A Novel Class of Coherent Localized Structures for the Maccari System

By means of the Baecklund transformation, a quite general variable separation solution of the (2+1)-dimensional Maccari systems is derived. In addition to some types of the usual localized excitations such as dromion, lumps, ring soliton and oscillated dromion, breathers solution, fractal-dromion, fractal-lump and chaotic soliton structures can be easily constructed by selecting the arbitrary functions appropriately, a new novel class of coherent localized structures like peakon solution and compacton solution of this new system are found by selecting apfropriate functions.

Ground-State Properties ,of C, O, and Ne Isotopes in Hartree--Fock-Bogoliubov Calculation with Gogny Interaction

Ground-state properties of C, O, and Ne isotopes are described in the framework of Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory with density-dependent finite-range Gogny interaction D1S. We include all the contributions to the Hartree-Fock and pairing feld arising from Gogny and Coulomb interaction as well as the center of mass correction in the numerical calcu/ations. These ground-state properties of C, O, and Ne isotopes are compared with available experimental results, Hartree-Fock plus BCS, shell model and relativistic Hartree--Bogoliubov calculations. The agreement between experiments and our theoretical results is pretty well. The predicted drip-line is dependent strongly on the model and effective interaction due to their sensitivity to various theoretical details. The calculations predict no evidence for halo structure predicted for C,O, and Ne isotopes in a previous RHB study.

Continuity of Some Classes of Functions Related to Degenerate Parabolic Equations and Its Applications

We study some classes of functions satisfying the assumptions similar to but weaker than those for the classical B2 function classes used in the research of quasi-linear parabolic equations as well as the ones used in the research of degenerate parabolic equations including porous medium equations. Consequently, we prove that a function in such a class is continuous. As an application, we obtain the estimate for the continuous modulus of the solutions of a few degenerate parabolic equations in divergence form, including the anisotropic porous equations.

Global Stability of a Predator-Prey System with Stage Structure for the Predator

In this paper, some feasibly suffcient conditions are obtained for the global asymptotic stability of a positive steady state of a predator-prey system with stage structure for the predator by using the theory of competitive systems, compound matrices and stability of periodic orbits, and then the work of Wang [4] is improved.

Periodicity and Stability in Periodic n-Species Lotka-Volterra Competition System with Feedback Controls and Deviating Arguments

By using the method of coincidence degree and Lyapunov functional, a set ofeasily applicable criteria are established for the global existence and global asymptotic stabilityof strictly positive (componentwise) periodic solution of a periodic n-species Lotka-Volterracompetition system with feedback controls and several deviating arguments. The problem considered inthis paper is in many aspects more general and incorporate as special cases various problems whichhave been studied extensively in the literature. Moreover, our new criteria, which improve andgeneralize some well known results, can be easily checked.

An important Moebius invariant in the theory of Moebius surfaces in S^n inthe so-called Moebius form. In this paper, we give a complete classification of surfaces in S^n withvanishing Moebius form under the Moebius transformation group.

Superlinear/Quadratic One-step Smoothing Newton Method for P_0-NCP

We propose a one–step smoothing Newton method for solving the non-linearcomplementarity problem with P 0–function (P_0–NCP) based on the smoothing symmetric perturbedFisher function (for short, denoted as the SSPF–function). The proposed algorithm has to solve onlyone linear system of equations and performs only one line search per iteration. Without requiringany strict complementarity assumption at the P_0–NCP solution, we show that the proposed algorithmconverges globally and superlinearly under mild conditions. Furthermore, the algorithm has localquadratic convergence under suitable conditions. The main feature of our global convergence resultsis that we do not assume a priori the existence of an accumulation point. Compared to the previousliteratures, our algorithm has stronger convergence results under weaker conditions.

ON AN SIS EPIDEMIC MODEL WITH STAGE STRUCTURE

A SIS infectious disease model with stage structure consisting of immature and mature stages is proposed using a discrete time delay. The aim of the paper is to investigate under which conditions the disease becomes endemic or not and to find the difference between the model with stage structure and the corresponding model without stage structure. It is shown that either there exists a unique endemic equilibrium point which is globally asymptotically stable or the disease dies out by using an iterative scheme. The effect of the time delay on the populations at equilibria is considered.

CONVEXITY AND SYMMETRY OF TRANSLATING SOLITONS IN MEAN CURVATURE FLOWS

This paper proves that any rotationally symmetric translating soliton of mean curvature flow in Rs is strictly convex if it is not a plane and it intersects its symmetric axis at one point. The authors also study the symmetry of any translating soliton of mean curvature flow in Rn.

A Characterization of Homomorphisms Between Banach Algebras

We show that every unital invertibility preserving linear map from a von Neumann algebra onto a semi-simple Banach algebra is a Jordan homomorphism;this gives an affirmative answer to a problem of Kaplansky for all von Neumann algebras.For a unital linear map Φ from a semi-simple complex Banach algebra onto another,we also show that the following statements are equivalent:(1) Φ is an homomorphism;(2)Φ is completely invertibility preserving;(3)Φ is 2-invertibility preserving.
