Premium (2 - 3 capsules daily), a liquid mixture of green-lipped mussel from New Zealand, blackcurrant leaf, and curcuma extract. Within the first 6 weeks of therapy, a significant clinical benefit was observed for relief from pain, need for pain-relieving drugs, and the interference of pain with personal care and lifting. This benefit was more pronounced at 3 months. The mixture was well tolerated without significant side effects. Adherence was estimated to be “good” to “very good.” Patients assessed global improvement and efficacy as “sufficient” to “good.” Based on this study, the mode of action of Synofit? Premium appears mainly to be analgesic, as reported by patients, and allows them to reduce the consumption of other pain-relieving substances and improve their quality of life. In conclusion, Synofit? Premium holds potential as a promising candidate alternative therapy for relief of low back pain and likely other painful rheumatic conditions, with almost no or minor side effects.展开更多

Sirolimus (rapamycin), an immunosuppressive drug, may also have antitumor effect...BACKGROUND: Recipients of organ transplants are susceptible to Kaposi’ s sarcoma as a result of treatment with immunosuppressive drugs. Sirolimus (rapamycin), an immunosuppressive drug, may also have antitumor effects. METHODS: We stopped cyclosporine therapy in 15 kidney- transplant recipients who had biopsy-proven Kaposi’ s sarcoma and began sirolimus therapy. All patients underwent an excisional biopsy of the lesion and one biopsy of normal skin at the time of diagnosis. A second biopsy was performed at the site of a previous Kaposi’ s sarcoma lesion six months after sirolimus the rapy was begun. We examined biopsy specimens for vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), Flk-1/KDR protein, and phosphorylated Akt and p70S6 kinase, two enzymes in the signaling pathway targeted by sirolimus. RESULTS: Three months after sirolimus therapy was begun, all cutaneous Kaposi’ s sarcoma lesions had disappeared in all patients. Remission was confirmed histologically in all patients six months after sirolimus therapy was begun. There were no acute episodes of rejection or changes in kidney- graft function. Levels of Flk- 1/KDR and phosphorylated Akt and p70S6 kinase were increased in Kaposi’ s sarcoma cells. The expression of VEGF was increased in Kaposi’ s sarcoma cells and even more so in normal skin cells around the Kaposi’ s sarcoma lesions. CONCLUSIONS: Sirolimus inhibits the progression of dermal Kaposi’ s sarcoma in kidney- transplant recipients while providing effective immunosuppression. Copyright.展开更多
This study attempted to identify the level of exposure of 350 subjects to the extremely low-frequency magnetic field(ELF-MF).The occupational group showed significantly high levels of ELF-MF in every exposure indicato...This study attempted to identify the level of exposure of 350 subjects to the extremely low-frequency magnetic field(ELF-MF).The occupational group showed significantly high levels of ELF-MF in every exposure indicator during work and transportation(p<0.05).About 11%and 6%of the members of the occupational group were exposed to over 2mG and 4 mG,respectively,of ELF-MF during"all"activities.The 24-h ELF-MF exposure levels of the subjects in both groups were analyzed.In the occupational group,for every activity,the percentile for less than 2mG corresponded to 100%of C-4(agriculture),95%of C-1(professional),97%of C-2(engineer,office/sales),81%of C-3(services),85%of C-5(technician,labor management),and 50%of C-6(electrician).In the non-occupational group,the percentile for less than 2mG corresponded to 92%of students,83%of homemakers,81%of the elderly,and 88%of the unemployed.The percentile for over 4mG was 5%for students,homemakers,and the elderly and 13%of the unemployed.Electricians and the unemployed had the highest ELF-MF levels in both groups,respectively.Electricians were exposed to ELF-MF mostly at work,while the unemployed subjects were most affected by the activities classified under sleep and transportation.展开更多
