This review was intended to explore the observation that periodontal therapy may lead to an improvement of adipokines in diabetic patients. In summary, substantial evidence suggests that diabetes is associated with increased prevalence, extent and severity of periodontitis. Numerous mechanisms have been elucidated to explain the impact of diabetes on the periodontium. However, current knowledge concerning the role of major adipokines indicates only some of their associations with the pathogenesis of periodontitis in type 2 diabetes. Conversely, treatment of periodontal disease and reduction of oral inflammation may have positive effects on the diabetic condition, although evidence for this remains somewhat equivocal.展开更多

Accurate knowledge of the physiological foramina morphology; thus, inherent mechanical shaping technical hindrances, is decisive when taking the corresponding root canal final preparation decision. The morphological dimensions of a total of 1 727 physiological foramina were investigated by means of micro-computed tomography. Mean narrow and wide (to a high number, oval) diameters of the physiological foramen were 0.24, 0.22 and 0.33 mm and 0.33, 0.31 and 0.42 mm in mesiobuccal (MB), distobuccal (DB) and palatal (P) roots in maxillary first molars; 0.24, 0.22 and 0.33 mm and 0.41, 0.33 and 0.44 in MB, DB, and P roots in maxillary second molars. Mandibular first molars showed mean narrow and wide diameters of 0.24 and 0.30 mm and of 0.39 and 0.46 mm in mesial (M) and distal (D) roots; second mandibular molars showed 0.25 and 0.31 mm and 0.47 mm in M and D roots. The mean distance between the physiological foramina and anatomical apex was 0.82, 0.81 and 1.02 mm and 0.54, 0.43 and 0.63 mm in MB, DB and P roots of the maxillary first and second molars, respectively. A mean distance of 0.95 mm (M) and 1.05 mm (D) in the first and 0.78 mm (M) and 0.81 mm (D) in the second mandibular molars was observed. Based on the results obtained, assumable recommendations for final preparation size of the physiological foramen were calculated. However, when taking into consideration, the resulting standard deviations of marginal errors must be cautiously considered when taking a final decision in clinical endodontic treatment.展开更多

Methods: Eighteen periodontal intrabony defects of nine chronic periodontitis patients were evaluated. Two defects per patient with probing pocket depth (PPD) ≥ 6 mm were assigned to two different types of treatments: EMD + DBBM + CM or EMD + DBBM. Clinical parameters including Gingival Index (GI), PPD, clinical attachment level (CAL), gingival recession (GR), bleeding on probing (BOP), tooth mobility (MOB), and the filled bone volume/rate (FBV/FBR), which was measured by cone beam computed tomography, were compared at baseline and 12 months post-treatment. Differences between groups were determined by the chisquare test, McNemar’s test, and Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Results: Clinically, PPD, CAL, and FBR significantly improved in both groups (p Conclusion: Periodontal regenerative therapies comprising EMD and DBBM with and without CM resulted in positive clinical outcomes. The use of CM may result in better outcomes in MOB decrease;however, long-term prognosis must be further studied.展开更多

To improve the stability, the effects of polyvinylalcohol on the anthocyanins of young red wine prepared from Cambell Early grapes were examined in aqueous solution and in the solid phase on a cotton swab? and inert materials. Cyanidin-3-glucoside and mal-vidin-3-glucoside represented approximately 43.6% of total anthocyanins in the red wine. The anthocyanins decreased to 11.3% of the initial amount in aqueous solution at physiological pH after storage for 60 days at room temperature. On the other hand, from 66.9% to 87.2% remained in the solid phase on a cotton swab? and polypropylene membrane in the presence of polyvinylalcohol. The stability of the anthocyanins increased with the concentration of polyvinyl-alcohol in the solid phase but not in the aqueous solution. The anthocyanins were found to be condensed and immobilized in the complexes of anthocyanins and polyvinylalcohol on the poly-propylene membrane by phase-contrast microscopy analysis. The anthocyanins in the cotton swab? displayed color variations when dipped into different pH buffer solutions. These results suggest that anthocyanins from red wine stabilized in the solid phase by polyvinylalcohol can be used as a visual indicator of pH.展开更多

But little is known about the relationship between the self-reported performance level of the tasks and lower leg strength and power in very elderly people. The purpose of this study was to ascertain the relationship between the self-reported performance level of two tasks and the lower leg function in community-dwelling 80-year-old population. Methods: Out of 994 persons who were 80 years old living in Morioka City, Iwate Prefecture, Japan, 607 individuals (236 men and 371 women) underwent a physical fitness test that included measurements of leg extensor power and knee extensor strength. The ability to climb up stair and to rise from a chair was assessed by self- reported questionnaire which was ranked in three levels. The area under the receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC) was used to evaluate the measurements. Results: The cut-off points for the leg extensor power of subjects who could completely perform the stair-climbing and chair-rising functions were determined to be approximately 8.6 watt/kg body mass for men and 5.6 watt/kg body mass for women. In addition, the cut-off points for the knee extensor strength of subjects who could completely perform the stair-climbing and chair-rising functions were determined to be approximately 0.97 kg/kg body mass for men and 0.84 kg/kg body mass for women. Conclusions: From a practical viewpoint, the present study suggested that the cut-off points of leg extensor power and knee extensor strength can be used as targets in simple self-reported questionnaires to help in screening for mobility in 80-year-old展开更多

The purpose of the present study was to analyze the comprehensive protein expression levels of candidate biomarkers in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) from CCB-GO patients. Eleven GO patients (10 males and one female, mean ± SD: age: 64.4 ± 14.0 years) who had been systemically prescribed CCBs, either amlodipine or nifedipine, for hypertension for at least 12 months were recruited. Before (baseline) and 4 weeks after initial periodontal treatments, subgingival plaque and GCF samples were taken from two sites per patient: sites affected by CCB-GO and chronic periodontitis. Measurement of clinical parameters and quantitative analysis of periodontopathic bacteria using real-time PCR were performed. Biomarkers/cytokines in GCF were examined using multiplex bead immunoassays. The Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare the collected data between groups. The correlations between pairs of biomarkers were assessed using the Spearman correlation relationship. Levels of two of the 14 biomarkers, interleukin (IL)-1β and transforming growth factor (TGF)- β, were significantly decreased in CCB-GO sites after initial periodontal therapy. The intragroup comparison at baseline showed that counts of Treponema denticola in the GO group were significantly higher than those in the chronic periodontitis group (P β and TGF-β in CCB-GO patients. These factors are involved in initiation and progression of GO as well as periodontitis.展开更多

Some studies have suggested that serum lipids might play a role in the association between periodontal disease and CVD. However, this hypothesis remains unproven. Present study evaluated the association between periodontal disease and CVD-related parameters including electrocardiographic (ECG) parameters and serum lipid levels in the elderly. This study was a prospective cohort study. A total of 107 subjects (57 males and 50 females) from Niigata City’s community-dwelling elderly (all aged 75 years old) who possessed at least 20 teeth and did not exhibit ECG abnormalities at the baseline underwent annual examinations for 5 years. Logistic regression analysis was used to assess the relationship between periodontal condition and the presence of ECG abnormalities, after adjusting for confounding factors including serum lipid levels. Logistic regression analysis showed that the subjects who exhibited a poor periodontal condition at the baseline had a 2.97 times greater risk of suffering from ECG abnormalities than the subjects who displayed a good periodontal condition at the baseline (p = 0.019). Furthermore, the subjects who displayed a poor periodontal condition and an unfavorable serum lipid profile at the baseline showed a significantly higher frequency of ECG abnormalities (63.6%) than those who exhibited a healthy periodontal condition and a favorable serum lipid profile (21.6%, p = 0.008) as well as those who displayed a healthy periodontal condition and an unfavorable serum lipid profile (21.4%, p = 0.010). As a conclusion, periodontal condition could be a marker of CVD, even in the healthy elderly.展开更多

Method: An assay system comprised of a cotton swab impregnated with zinc sulfate, attached chromatography paper, stabilizing solution, and coloring reagents for the methylene blue technique was developed. Using this system we investigated on the visualization of the hydrogen sulfide on the solid phase and possibility for evaluating the origin of oral malodor on the tongue dorsum. Results: The assay system made possible visualization of a linear curve ranging from 5.3 ng to 85 ng of hydrogen sulfide, with low reagent consumption and miniaturization. However, the sensitivity was different for gaseous and fluid samples. The biofilm of the tongue dorsum from subjects with complaints of halitosis showed different shades of methylene blue depending on the concentration of hydrogen sulfide. A positive correlation was found between hydrogen sulfide on the tongue dorsum and the concentration of VSC hydrogen sulfide in mouth breath as measured using an Oral Chroma semiconductor gas sensor. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that the novel assay system can be used as a visual warning sensor for halitosis by measuring hydrogen sulfide on the tongue dorsum.展开更多
