A new phenol-degrading bacterium with high biodegradation activity and high tolerance of phenol, strain PD 12, was isolated from the activated sludge of Tianjin Jizhuangzi Wastewater Treatment Facility in China. This strain was capable of removing 500 mg phenol/L in liquid minimal medium by 99.6% within 9 h and metabolizing phenol at concentrations up to 1100 mg/L. DNA sequencing and homologous analysis of 16S rRNA gene identified PD12 to be an Acinetobacter sp. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was used as a gel matrix to immobilize Acinetobacter sp. strain PDI2 by repeated freezing and thawing. The factors affecting phenol degradation of immobilized cells were investigated, and the results showed that the immobilized cells could tolerate a high phenol level and protected the bacteria against changes in temperature and pH. Storage stability and reusability tests revealed that the phenol degradation functions of immobilized cells were stable after reuse for 50 times or storing at 4℃ for 50 d. These results indicate that immobilized Acinetobacter sp. strain PD 12 possesses a good application potential in the treatment of phenol-containing wastewater. 展开更多

The biology safety of genetically modified organisms (GMO) has been a topic of considerable public debate in recent years. Parts of the international research on the safety of GMO focus on its effect on soil ecosystem, especially on microbial communities changing and process in soil that are essential to key terrestrial ecosystem functions. This paper studied the dynamic change of soil microbe after cultivating Roundup Ready soybean (RRS) and the effect on biochemical processing of nitrogen cycle. According to the variance analysis, the ammonifying bacteria and nitrifying bacteria quantities of RRS in the rhizosphere soil were much lower than that of other genotype soybeans. The effects of different genotype soybeans on ammoniation intensity and nitrification intensity were remarkable. The nitrification intensity and the nitrifying bacteria had the great positive correlation and sustainable development. 展开更多

研究表明饮用水中微小数量的砷会对人类健康产生不利影响。世界上居住在贫穷地区的人数超过了100万,目前他们正直接饮用来自含水层中砷离子含量(>10μg/L)非安全标准的地下水。砷有时称为毒中之王,在水环境中常常以五价氧化物形式出... 研究表明饮用水中微小数量的砷会对人类健康产生不利影响。世界上居住在贫穷地区的人数超过了100万,目前他们正直接饮用来自含水层中砷离子含量(>10μg/L)非安全标准的地下水。砷有时称为毒中之王,在水环境中常常以五价氧化物形式出现。自2000年以来,许多国家开始执行更为严格的10μg/L(WHO认可的居民安全饮水标准)饮用水标准,可以确定地说,在世界范围内的饮用水中检测到砷的情况越来越多。亚洲地区砷中毒的人数比世界其他地区总和还多。最受影响的地区位于南亚和东南亚富砷带,环绕恒河—雅鲁藏布江—梅克纳河三角洲及恒河平原上游的冲洪积扇含水层、红河三角洲、湄公河和伊洛瓦底江;在中国境内包括内蒙黄河冲积盆地,山西大同盆地、新疆准噶尔盆地,其中的地下水富含砷和氟化物而引发砷中毒和氟中毒。尽管还未完全掌握其中的水文地质及生物地球化学作用的详细过程,但对大多数沉积介质含水层,在还原条件下砷离子容易从沉积介质转移到地下水中。孟加拉研究实例表明地质时期尺度的冲刷降低了沉积介质中的As和有机物含量从而形成低砷地下水。这一认识为孟加拉国的降砷策略提供了科学指导,是未来水文学,矿物学,地质学和生物地球化学方面很有意义的研究方向,并有利于地砷病区低砷地下水的可持续利用。 展开更多

Changes in land use associated with the suppression of native vegetation can greatly alter the landscape configuration, affecting biodiversity and environmental services availability. This study analyzes how changes in land use affect landscape patterns of vegetation remnant over a 10 year period. We quantified spatial landscape patterns throughout a hydrographic basin for the years 2002, 2008, 2010 and 2012, using nine landscape metrics. An indicator of integrity was used to details the transformation processes occurring in the basin that could be used to monitor the impact of landscape changes and its spatial patterning. Results showed that over this decade, extension of farming activities reduced the cover of native vegetation by 4.4%, with grassy-woody savanna, wooded savanna and forested savanna impacted especially strongly. Suppression of vegetation across this period reduced the size of fragments and their connectivity. The landscape fragmentation indicator indicated that the fragmentation pattern varied spatially, with the upland areas along river headwaters, being most fragmented. Areas of floodplains vegetation, belonged to the Pantanal Wetland, although in better integrity states, are the most threatened by current pressures of land use change. An intense recovery program for headwaters and aquifer recharge areas, as well as riparian forests, is recommended to avoid the future depletion of water production. Besides, we also recommend the maintenance and recovering of the connectivity of the current remaining patches of natural vegetation corridors and elaboration of specific laws that incoporate the consolidated scientific knowladge about wetland ecosystem functioning, like the Pantanal. 展开更多

Thedaily rhythm and the influence of light and temperature on the production rate of DOC and POC were stud-ied by growing the diatom under different laboratory controlled conditions of light and temperature. Theresults showed that the production of DOC and POC varied with light and temperature and were generallyhigher at daytime than at night. The flowing water was collected from very small creeks and seepage water from small dug holes at three different areas,viz.Manikchari,Ghagra and Muralipara in Rangamati district of Chittagong Hill Tracts,Bangladesh to investigate the impact of the existing varied land covers on water quality.Chemical analyses shows that flowing creek water from either mature mixed plantation or young gamar(Gmelina arborea) plantation had significantly(p〈0.05) higher pH value,SO4^2-and Ca^2+ concentrations,and significantly lower Na+ concentration at Manikchari,compared to natural vegetation and plantation in combination.In flowing creek water of Ghagra,the concentrations of SO4^2-and K+,conductivity and total dissolved solids from watershed of 8-year-old teak(Tectona grandis) plantation were significantly higher and the concentrations of HCO3^-,NO3^-and PO4^3-were significantly lower,compared to those of watershed of degraded natural vegetation.At Muralipara,flowing creek water from natural vegetation and shifting cultivated land in combination showed significantly higher concentrations of HCO3^-,NO3^-,Na+,K+,Ca^2+ and Mg^2+,and conductivity and total dissolved solids than seepage water as well as tube well water installed in shifting cultivated area alone. 展开更多

The results showed that concentration and type ofthe metal compound affected the growth of Nannochloropsis. ZnCl<sub>2</sub> and Na<sub>2</sub>SeO<sub>3</sub>, promoted the growth ofNannochloropsis at relatively low concentrations of 15. 3 μmol/L and 57. 8 μmol/L respectively, but inhib-it its growth at higher concentration of 153 μmol/L and about 300 μmol/L. No significant growth promotionwas observed for MnCl<sub>2</sub> and MnSO<sub>4</sub> although MnCl<sub>2</sub> was found to have higher toxic effect than MnSO<sub>4</sub>. 展开更多

Barrier Mg doping would lead to the enhanced hole transportation and reduced polarization field in the quantum wells(QWs), both may reduce the efficiency droop. However,heavy Mg doping in the QBs would strongly deteriorate the crystal quality of the QWs grown after the doped QB. When increasing the injection current, the carriers would escape from the QWs between n-GaN and the doped QB and recombine non-radiatively in the QWs grown after the doped QB, leading to a serious efficiency droop. 展开更多

An attempt of applying a novel genetic programming(GP) technique,a new member of evolution algorithms,has been made to predict the water storage of Wolonghu wetland response to the climate change in northeastern part of China with little data set.Fourteen years(1993-2006) of annual water storage and climatic data set of the wetland were taken for model training and testing.The results of simulations and predictions illustrated a good fit between calculated water storage and observed values(MAPE=9.47,r=0.99).By comparison,a multilayer perceptron(MLP)(a popular artificial neural network model) method and a grey model(GM) with the same data set were applied for performances estimation.It was found that GP technique had better performances than the other two methods both in the simulation step and predicting phase and the results were analyzed and discussed.The case study confirmed that GP method is a promising way for wetland managers to make a quick estimation of fluctuations of water storage in some wetlands under condition of little data set. 展开更多

In order to explore the photocatalytic activity of the lanthanum and iodine co-doped TiO2,the degradation of acid blue 62 as a probe reaction under simulated sunlight irradiattion was investigated.A novel visible-light-activated La/I/TiO2 nanocomposition photocatalyst was prepared using precipitation-diping method,and characterized by X-ray diffraction(XRD),transmission electron microscopy(TEM)and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy(UV-Vis-DRS).The photocatalytic efficiency of La/I/TiO2 was evaluated by the photodegradation of reactive acid blue 62 as a probe reaction under simulated sunlight irradiationt.Photocatalytic experiment results shows that the La/I co-doped TiO2 catalyst has higher photocatalytic activity than the standard Degussa P25,La-doped TiO2 and I-doped TiO2 photocatalysts under simulated sunlight irradiation,and the way of La/I co-doping extends the absorption spectra of TiO2 and shifts the absorption edge remarkably toward longer wavelength. 展开更多

In this Letter, an alternative solution is proposed and demonstrated for simultaneous measurement of axial strain and temperature. This sensor consists of two twisted points on a commercial single mode fiber introduced by flame-heated and rotation treatment. The fabrication process modifies the geometrical configuration and refractive index of the fiber. Different cladding modes are excited at the first twisted point, and part of them are coupled back to the fiber core at the second twisted point. Experimental results show distinct sensitivities of 34.9 pm/με with 49.23 pm/℃ and -36.19 pm/με with 62.99 pm/℃ for the two selected destructive interference wavelengths. 展开更多
