Objective: To investigate the wound-healing effect of Alocasia longiloba(A. longiloba) petiole extract on wounds in rats. Methods: Twenty-two male Sprague-dawley rats were randomly assigned to receive 10% solcoseryl gel, phosphate buffer saline, 50% ethanol, 95% ethanol and hexane extracts of A. longiloba at 1.5%, 3% and 6% doses, respectively. A full thicknesses wound(6 mm) was created on the dorsal of the rat; and all rats were applied with the extract solutions, 10% solcoseryl gel and phosphate buffer saline once a day topically until day 12. The wound was photographed on day 1, 6 and 12, and the percentage of wound contraction was calculated. On day 12, rats were sacrificed and histological examination of granulation tissue was carried out using haematoxylin & eosin and Masson's Trichrome stain to determine the wound healing effect. Results: In this study, 6% of 50% and 95% ethanol extracts of A. longiloba showed 82.50% and 82.32% wound contraction, respectively, and were comparable with 10% solcoseryl gel(82.30%). Meanwhile, phosphate buffer saline treated group showed the lowest wound contraction(69.86%). Histological assessment of wound treated with 6% of 95% ethanol extract of A. longiloba showed distinct epidermal and dermal layer, higher proliferation of fibroblast and more angiogenesis with collagen compared to other wound treated groups. Conclusions: A. longiloba petiole extracts have a wound healing potential and 6% of 95% ethanol extract of A. longiloba is more effective. Further studies are required to understand the wound healing mechanism of action of the extract. 展开更多

Fungus-growing termites cultivate species of the mutualistic basidiomycete genus Termitomyces on a substrate called the fungal comb. Identification of fungal species based on morphological features is complicated, tedious, and prone to errors. As an alternative, nuclear ribosomal DNA sequences consisting of the internal transcribed spacers (ITS1 and ITS2) and 5.8S rDNA were used to identify Malaysian isolates of Termitomyces sp. The morphological characteristics and molecular data indicate that Malaysian Termitomyces isolated is clearly monophyletic and belongs to the Tricholomataceae family. The Malaysian isolates analyzed in this study represent the termite fungus species called T. aurantiacus. 展开更多

In overcoming this problem, the spent AC can be regenerated by means of biological approach. Bioregeneration is the phenomenon in which through the action of microorganisms, the adsorbed pollutants on the surface of the AC will be biodegraded and this enables further adsorption of pollutants to occur with time elapse. This review provides the challenges and perspectives for effective bioregeneration to occur in biological activated carbon(BAC)column. Owing to very few reported works on the bioregeneration rate in BAC column, emphasis is put forward on the recently developed models of bioregeneration kinetic in batch system. All in all, providing potential solutions in increasing the lifespan of AC and the enhancement of bioregeneration rate will definitely overcome the bottlenecks in spent AC bioregeneration. 展开更多

Impairment of fish growth and immune system due to stress and disease are major constraints in aquaculture industry.Traditionally, antibiotic was used as prophylactic agent in the health management of aquaculture species. However, antibiotic only provide a temporary solution to the problem of disease outbreak.Over-reliance on antibiotic also has led to the increasing cases of antibiotic resistance among pathogenic bacteria from aquaculture sites and contamination of antibiotic residues into human food chain.Probiotic, prebiotic and symbiotic are therefore suggested as alternatives to prophylactic antibiotic to be used in the aquaculture industry.A potential prophylactic agent is polysaccharide that could be developed into an alternative antibiotic for aquatic animals. In this review paper, definition, sources, and mode of action of polysaccharide are presented. The roles of polysaccharides in fish farming with emphasis on growth improvement, immune system enhancement, disease resistance stimulation in tilapia farming, and the effects of polysaccharides on abiotic stressors are summarized and discussed. 展开更多

Aquaculture industry contributes significant aquaculture species production to meet fish protein demand from the world. The industry is gearing towards intensification to increase more production in the near future.Various technologies and efforts were introduced into aquaculture industry to bring it up to the next higher level. However, the development of aquaculture industry is hindered by disease constraint. As a result, excessive use of antibiotics and chemicals were applied to reduce or minimize risk of disease outbreak in aquaculture farming activity.Subsequently, aquacultures products and environment were highly exposed to these antibiotics and chemicals. To resolve this issue, fish farmers were encouraged to utilize alternative method in aquaculture species health management.Prebiotics has become a new approach in aquaculture industry to maintain aquaculture species health and a good environment at the same time produce chemical and antibiotic-free aquaculture product. In this review paper,we summarize and discuss the effects of prebiotic mixtures administration on growth performance, immune response, disease resistance, and tolerance against abiotic stressors of aquatic animals. 展开更多

Multi-strain probiotics provide the most dependable approaches to improve health, immune response, and disease resistance in farmed fishes. In the present study,we examined the effects of multi-species probiotics on the survival, growth, immune response, and disease resistance of rohu(Labeo rohita)larvae.Newly hatched larvae from the day of first feeding(average weight of 0.003 g)were reared with multi-species probiotics having a combination of Bacillus subtilis(109 colony forming units(cfu)/mL)and Lactobacillus spp.(Lactobacillus plantarum,Lactobacillus buchneri-1011 cfu/mL)in water containing doses of 0(control-C),0.5 mL/L(treatment 1-T1),and 1.0 mL/L(treatment 2-T2)in triplicates for 90 days. After the experiment,a challenge test was performed to assess the fish's resistance to pathogenic Aeromonas veronii.Significantly higher survival was recorded in larvae of treated groups(87%in T2 and 79%in T1)compared to the control(62%).Significantly higher growth performance(weight gain and specific growth rate—SGR)was shown by the probiotic-treated larval groups compared to the control.Probiotic supplementation resulted in significantly higher counts of total viable colony(TVC)and lactic acid bacteria(LAB)in the intestine. Some immunological parameters(mucosal fold fattening, goblet cell abundance, expansion of lamina propria and enterocytes)of the gut were significantly better in probiotic-treated fish. The liver of treated fish showed irregular shape nuclei turning into regular shape and reducing spaces between the hepatic cells.Probiotic-treated fish had the highest post-challenge survival rate(90%)against A.veronii infection. The erythrocytes of challenged fish treated with probiotics had significantly lower frequencies of various nuclear and cellular abnormalities. These findings suggest that multi-species probiotic supplements could improve the survival, growth, health status, and immune response of rohu in the early stages of its development. 展开更多

Agricultural wastes, including cocoa pod husk(waste from the chocolate industry)and sugarcane bagasse(waste from the sugar industry),are increasing day by day.The development of food packaging biofilms from these two wastes could be beneficial to the environment and human. Therefore, this study was conducted to develop biodegradable plastic films by using cocoa pod husk and sugarcane bagasse.Cellulose and fibre were extracted from cocoa pod husk and sugar-cane bagasse, respectively. The developed bioplastic films were divided into several concentration ratios of cellulose and fibre which are 100꞉0(100%cellulose),75꞉25(cellulose꞉fibre),50꞉50(cel-lulose꞉fibre),25꞉75(cellulose꞉fibre),and 0꞉100(100%fibre).The physicochemical properties for all bioplastic concentration ratios were determined in terms of sensory evaluation, drying time, moisture content, water absorption and water vapor permeability. From the observation and anal-ysis of the physicochemical properties of bioplastic,we found that the most suitable bioplastic film for food packaging goes to the combination of 75%cellulose and 25%fibre bioplastic,as it demonstrated the lowest water absorption percentage and water vapor permeability. 展开更多
