Volcanic Risk Perception and Coping Strategies from Mounts Cameroon and Nyiragongo Eruptions, Central Africa: A Comparative Analysis

Approximately 2,000,000 people are exposed to volcanic risks in communities situated at the flanks of Mounts Cameroon (MC) and Nyiragongo (MN) volcanoes in Central Africa. This study therefore sought to investigate risk perception from four previous eruptions of MC, namely the 1959, 1982, 1999, and 2000 eruptions;and two previous eruptions of MN: 1977 and 2002. The study was initiated with co-design workshops held with major stakeholders in the cities of Buea and Goma at the flanks of MC and MN, respectively, in 2017, to develop the research objectives for the study. A non-random questionnaire survey was later conducted within 14 and 15 communities in Buea and Goma respectively, on the effects, perceived risks, and coping strategies for the chosen eruptions. Three age groups (18 - 30, 31 - 45 and >45 years) and gender (male and female) were considered. The population at the flanks of both volcanoes cited scientific and indigenous factors to be responsible for eruptions from these volcanoes. At MC and MN, ≥45% of the sampled participants (with a higher female population) perceived that the sampled eruptions posed a very high risk to the population. In terms of the effects, the age group of 18 - 30 was the least knowledgeable. In terms of direct effect on persons, over 90% of participants at MC and MN attested that they were overcome by fear/panic. On measures to cope with any likely eruption, the following order was established at the flanks of both volcanoes: sensitization of population, use of religious (prayers) and of traditional/indigenous strategies. In terms of future coping strategies, while the males at MC maintained sensitization as the favourite option, 62% of the males at MN opted for traditional/indigenous strategies. Cloud cover constitutes a major obstacle to land cover classification in the humid tropical regions when using optical remote sensing such as Landsat imagery. The advent of freely available Sentinel-1 C band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery offers new opportunities for land cover classification in frequently cloud covered environments. In this study, we investigated the utility of Sentinel-1 for extracting land use land cover (LULC) information in the coastal low lying strip of Douala, Cameroon when compared with Landsat enhanced thematic mapper (TM). We also assessed the potential of integrating Sentinel-1 and Landsat. The major LULC classes in the region included water, settlement, bare ground, dark mangroves, green mangroves, swampy vegetation, rubber, coastal forest and other vegetation and palms. Textural variables including mean, correlation, contrast and entropy were derived from the Sentinel-1 C band. Various conventional image processing techniques and the support vector machine (SVM) algorithm were applied. Only four land cover classes (settlement, water, mangroves and other vegetation and rubber) could be calibrated and validated using SAR imagery due to speckles. The Sentinel-1 only classification yielded a lower overall classification accuracy (67.65% when compared to all Landsat bands (88.7%)). The integrated Sentinel-1 and Landsat data showed no significant differences in overall accuracy assessment (88.71% and 88.59%, respectively). The three best spectral bands (5, 6, 7) of Landsat imagery yielded the highest overall accuracy assessment (91.96%). in the study. These results demonstrate a lower potential of Sentinel-1 for land cover classification in the Douala estuary when compared with cloud free Landsat images. Assessing land use/land cover change impacts on the hydrology of Nyong River Basin, Cameroon

Uncontrolled land use land cover change(LULCC) is impacting watershed hydrology,particularly in tropical watersheds in developing countries. We assessed the extent of LULCC in the southern portion of the Nyong River basin through analysis of three land use maps in 1987, 2000 and2014. LULCC impact on hydrological variables of the Mbalmayo, Olama, Pont So’o, Messam, and Nsimi sub-watersheds of the southern portion of the Nyong River basin were evaluated by using the linear regression modeling and the Mann-Kendall test. This study reveals that dense forest cover decreased by16%, young secondary forest increased by 18%,agricultural/cropland increased by 10%, and built-up area/bare soil increased by 3% from 1987 to 2014.The decrease in dense forest cover at 0.6% per year on average was driven by indiscriminate expansion of subsistence agricultural/cropland through shifting and fallow cultivation farming systems. Nonsignificant trends in total discharge, high flows, and low flows were observed in the large sub-watersheds of Mbalmayo and Olama from 1998 to 2013 with LULCC within the watershed. In contrast, significant decreasing trends in stream discharge(up to-5.1%and-5.9%), and significant increasing trends in high flows(up to 2.1% and 6.3%), respectively, were observed in the small sub-watersheds of Pont So’o and Messam from 1998 to 2013, particularly with increase in agricultural/cropland cover and decrease in dense forest cover. However, we found nonsignificant trends in mean annual discharge and low flows for all and whole watershed with LULCC. The results reveal spatially varying trends of stream discharge, low flows and high flows among the subwatersheds with LULCC within the study watershed.The results suggest that the impacts of LULCC on watershed hydrology are easily detected in small subwatersheds than in large sub-watersheds. Therefore,the magnitude of dense forest cover loss must be significantly greater than 16% to cause significant changes and common trends in the hydrology of the sub-watersheds of the southern portion of the Nyong River basin. The Mann-Kendall and Regression approaches show appreciable potential for modelling the impacts of LULCC on the hydrology of the southern portion of the Nyong River basin and for informing forest management. 展开更多

A study based on the spatial variability and contamination levels of fresh water resources by saline intrusion was conducted in the Douala coastal area. The study was aimed at highlighting the associations between major ions in ground water from which cause-effect relationships could be inferred. Water samples were collected from 19 stations. 3 stations were selected from the mangrove area and 16 stations were selected from the rest of the area partitioned into four transects (coastal transect, inner transect 1, inner transect 2 and inner transect 3). Sampling was done repeatedly during the dry season and these samples were analysed for physico-chemical parameters. Results show that the samples were acidic (pH: 4.7 - 6.7). Total dissolved solids (TDS) and electrical conductivity (EC) values ranged between 70.3 - 3703 mg/L and 136.4 - 7333 μS/cm respectively indicating medium salt enrichment and brackish waters. High temperatures (T°C) and low dissolved oxygen (DO) values of 26°C - 30.3°C and 0.96 - 3.9 mg/L respectively were observed and this could be interpreted as the acceleration of biological and chemical processes of ground water resources. Major ions were within the WHO limits except for Ca2+ (20.3 - 85 mg/L) and Mg2+ (6.6 - 49.6 mg/L) respectively whose concentrations were slightly higher. The leading cations were Ca2+ > Na+ > Mg2+ > K+ while were the leading anions. The multivariate analysis approach (MAA) values obtained for water variables showed that F1, F2 and F3 accounted for 61.6%, 21.5% and 9.9% respectively of total variance with strong loadings and these were considered to account for the ground and surface water quality of the area. The main water types were 63.2% , 26.3% Ca2+-Cl- and 10.5% Na+-Cl-. 89.5% of the water types had secondary salinity implying that anthropogenic sources were the source of salinity. The water was not fit for drinking. The values calculated for percentage sodium and sodium absorption ratio to determine its suitability for agricultural purposes revealed that 63.15%, 15.5%, 5.3% and 15.8% of sampled water were excellent, good, doubtful and unsuitable respectively for irrigation purposes. The need for water resource monitoring and forecasting regarding deterioration in quality is imperative before hazards of the rise in sea level arise. 展开更多

Background: Limb amputation is considered the last resort when the limb is no longer salvageable or when the limb is dead or dying, viable but nonfunctional or endangering the patient’s life. It is associated with profound economic, social, and psychological effects on the patients. The aim of this study is to evaluate the quality of life of major limb amputees in a rural setting in western Cameroon. Methods: This was a cross-sectional descriptive and analytical study carried out at the BATSENGLA-DSCHANG community in the West Region of Cameroon. Participants were interviewed and data collected using a pre-defined accredited questionnaire of the WHOQOL-BREF to assess the quality of life. Results: There were 63 participants, and a majority (60.32%) reported trauma as the cause of amputation. Participants with prostheses had a better quality of life. Conclusion: The age range of the study participants was 18 to 85 years with a mean of 46.73 ± 18.31 years. The majority were males (74.6%). Most of them (41.27%) had attained at least a secondary level of education, a majority (80.95%) were unemployed and more than half (55.56%) have less than the guaranteed inter-professional minimum wage. Major limb amputations were mostly due to traumatic causes (72%) and involved the lower limbs. Only a few (12.70%) used prostheses. Almost all of them (90.48%) had symptoms consistent with a phantom limb. The quality of life after major limb amputation in this study was generally fair according to the WHO quality of life tool. 展开更多
