The periodontium comprises all structures surrounding the teeth, including gingiva, root cementum, periodontal ligament and alveolar bone. Those tissues aim to protect and support the teeth and are challenged by a residing microbiota that leads to subclinical inflammation even in physiological conditions.Periodontitis,a prevalent multicausal inflammatory and destructive disease, develops as a result from complex host-parasite interactions. This unique physiologic and pathologic scenario enables the development of research methods which allows conclusions beyond the simple understanding of periodontal homeostasis. The aim of this viewpoint was to explore potential contributions of periodontal research to a wide array of basic science specialties, such as cell and molecular biology, microbiology, immunology, endocrinology, rheumatology, among others. 展开更多

The world maritime transportation is suffering a large increase in recent years and as a result of this increased on global trade, there is a consequent increase in waterway transportation and demand for fossil fuels, resulting in emissions of air pollutants. Consequently, the impact of transport emissions on climate change was put on the list of priorities. It has a high fuel demand as a result of continuous use of main engines for propulsion, electricity and heat production. The highest exposure levels of air pollution are found in ports and near them because most of the world fleet is positioned in these areas. The port of Rio de Janeiro city, in the Southeast Brazilian coastal, is inserted in the Guanabara Bay (GB), where the breezes recirculate pollutants in Metropolitan Region of Rio de Janeiro (MRRJ). Therefore, the aim of this research was to use the Brazilian Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (BRAMS) to generate the wind fields in the MRRJ and to calculate the trajectories of pollutants emitted on GB related to the waterway transportation, using a 3D kinematic trajectories model. Results demonstrated that for the periods analysed, the Central and west areas in the coastal region of the Rio de Janeiro city were the local most affected in the summer. In winter the trajectories reached the cities of the Rio de Janeiro and Duque de Caxias. Both in summer and winter, the trajectories followed towards the South Atlantic Ocean in the morning. Conclusions about this study show the need of decision-making process for better management of waterway transportation sector, improving the harmful effects on air quality in cities located in coastal regions. 展开更多

Oscillations in sea level due to meteorological forces related to wind and pressure affect the regular tides and modify the sea level conditions, mainly in restricted waters such as bays. Investigations surrounding these variations and the biological and chemical response are important for monitoring coastal regions mainly where upwelling shelf systems occur. A spatial and temporal database from Quick Scatterometer satellite vector wind, surface stations from the Southeast coast of Brazil and surface seawater data collected in Anjos Bay, Arraial do Cabo city, northeast of Rio de Janeiro State were used to investigate the meteorological influences in the variability of the dissolved oxygen, nutrients, meroplankton larvae and chlorophyll-a concentrations. Multivariate statistical approaches such as Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Clustering Analysis (CA) were applied to verify spatial and temporal variances. A correlation matrix was also verified for different water masses in order to identify the relationship between the above parameters. A seasonal variability of the meteorological residual presents a well-defined pattern with maximum peaks in autumn/winter and minimum during spring/summer with negative values, period of occurrence of upwelling in this region. This lowering of the sea level is in accordance with the increasing of nutrients and meroplankton larvae for the same period. CA showed six groups and an importance of the zonal and meridional wind variability, including these variables in a single cluster. PCA retained eight components, explaining 64.10% of the total variance of data set. Some clusters and loadings have the same variables, showing the importance of the sea-air interaction. 展开更多
