The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of the frequency of mastication on cerebral activation and task scores for computational tasks. Eleven healthy subjects participated in the present study (nine women, two men). Subjects carried out the Uchida-Kraepelin Test for 15 min before and after chewing tasteless gum for five minutes. The oxygenation of the left prefrontal cortex was monitored by near-infrared spectroscopy during the computational tasks. Task scores did not differ significantly according to chewing frequency (p > 0.05). Conversely, the oxygenation value measured after mastication at a chewing frequency of 110 times/minute (Hz) was significantly higher than that observed before mastication (p < 0.05). Meanwhile, before and after levels of oxygenation did not differ significantly for chewing frequencies of 30 Hz and 70 Hz (p > 0.05 for both). The results of the present study suggest that tasteless mastication does not enhance calculation performance, while a high mastication frequency demonstrates an influence on oxygenation. However, our study indicates that chewing tasteless gum per se does not increase cognitive performance. 展开更多

Niigata City in Japan and Khabarovsk City in Russia signed a sister city agreement in 1965 and have been interacting with each other for a long time. We have been conducting comparative research on the elderly between the two cities, but there is no research on the young. Distorted perception of body weight and unnecessary dieting behavior in adolescent girls is considered a problem in both Japan and Russia. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to clarify the distortion of weight perception and diet behavior of adolescent girls in both the countries. In addition, it was decided to investigate the eating habits of people in both the countries. In total, 195 15-year-old girls from Niigata, Japan (October 2020) and 286 girls from Khabarovsk, Russia (February 2017) were surveyed. The questionnaire used was an excerpt from the World Health Organization survey on the health behavior of school-age children. The proportion of Japanese adolescent girls who perceived themselves as overweight (distorted body weight perception) was 60.5%, which was significantly higher than that of Russian adolescent girls at 30.1% (p < 0.001). In addition, the prevalence of weight loss behavior in Japan was 34.9% (n = 68), which was significantly higher than that in Russia with 27.3% (n = 78) (p < 0.001). Adolescent girls in Japan had more serious problems with weight perception, but had fewer problems with breakfast and vegetable intake habits than those in Russia. From a young age, perception of correct body shape and establishment of eating habits are important not only for current health but also for future health. We need to carefully educate adolescent girls that their body undergoes major changes through secondary sexual characteristics during adulthood. 展开更多

Background: FertiQoL, which measures the Quality of Life (QOL) of reproductive partners, has been translated and used in 45 languages in the world. The reliability and validity of the original English version of FertiQoL have been confirmed. However, there is still no report on the reliability and validity of the Japanese version by a large-scale survey. This study aimed to examine the reliability and validity of the Japanese version of the FertiQoL scale for measuring the QOL of patients with reproductive problems. Methods: An unsigned self-filled questionnaire survey was conducted in patients undergoing infertility treatment at seven facilities in the Kanto area in Japan using the 34 items of the Japanese version of the FertiQoL scale. The study design was quantitative cross-sectional descriptive research. The investigation period was from April 2013 to April 2018. The contents of the investigation were attributes, FertiQoL scale, and distress scale. To determine the construct validity, principal component analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and correlation analysis for each subscale were performed using SPSS Statistics Ver. 23.0 and AMOS Ver. 23.0. The study was performed after obtaining approval from the Research Ethics Review Committee of the responsible institutions to which the researchers belong as an ethical consideration. Results: The participants included 1201 patients undergoing infertility treatment and who provided valid responses. The Cronbach’s α was 0.92, and confirmatory factor analysis identified six domains with 34 items that showed the following values: goodness of fit index = 0.877, adjusted goodness of fit index = 0.855, comparative fit index = 0.893, and root mean square error of approximation = 0.059. The correlation coefficient was 0.669 (p Conclusions: The Japanese version of FertiQoL showed adequate reliability and validity for assessing the QOL of patients with reproductive problems in Japan. 展开更多

Background: This study aimed to clarify the supportive care needs and medical care requests of male patients during their infertility treatment to be able to provide them with optimal nursing care. Methods: A self-filled questionnaire survey was conducted in 411 male patients who were undergoing infertility treatment at 4 human reproductive clinics. The investigation period was from April to August 2016. This research used across-sectional study design. The submission of the filled questionnaire was taken as an indication of agreement and consent to the research. The main contents of the questionnaire were attributions, care needs, and medical care requests of male patients. The care needs were evaluated by descriptive statistics, and the free descriptions of the medical care requests were analyzed for their contents qualitatively and recursively. The study was performed after the approval of the Research Ethics Review Committee. Results: The number of valid responses was 331 (80.5%). The care needs of the male patients were warm care from their wives, provision of information on their treatment, daily life information for conceiving, and evaluation data. The 6 categories of the open-ended responses were as follows: warm support, improvement of examination environment, adjustment of medical examination schedule, information provision, support from wife, and subsidy for treatment costs. These were extracted from the medical care requests by qualitative inductive analysis. Conclusions: The care needs and medical care requests of male patients undergoing infertility treatment were mainly on being provided information and supporting their wives. As supporting nursing care for these male patients, provision of sufficient information regarding the examination results and infertility treatment is recommended, and environmental considerations peculiar to male patients are necessary. Consideration from female patients is also an indispensable factor similarly to the provision of care for male patients. 展开更多

To research the potential ability of marine-derived actinomycetes to act as biocatalysts, 8 Micromonospora strains and 5 Streptomyces strains were screened. Two recommended media (227 and 1076 media) and 2 modified media (1076-25% and P-1076-25% media) for liquid culture of these marine-derived actinomycetes were tested. As a result, 2 Micromonospora strains (Micromonospora sp. NBRC107096 and 107097) cultured with the 1076-25% medium and 2 Streptomyces strains (Streptomyces tateyamensis NBRC105048 and Streptomyces sp. NBRC105896) cultured with P-1076-25% medium showed a good growth. The stereoselective reduction of α-keto esters using these 4 actinomycetes was tested. As a result, it was found that these strains had a reducing activity toward various α-keto esters. The introduction of L-glutamate or sucrose as an additive remarkably increased the conversion ratios in the reduction of substrates by the Micromonospora strain. Furthermore, in the presence of L-alanine, Streptomyces tateyamensis NBRC105048 reduced ethyl pyruvate, ethyl 2-oxobutanoate, ethyl 2-oxopentanoate, ethyl 2-oxohexanoate, and ethyl 3-methyl-2-oxobutyrate to the corresponding α-hydroxy ester with a high conversion ratio and with excellent enantiomeric excess. Thus, we found that these marine-derived actinomycetes have great potential to be used as biocatalysts for stereoselective reduction of carbonyl compounds. 展开更多

Since the introduction of antiretroviral therapy, the life expectancy of people living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLWH) has extended. This extension has led to an increase in the aging population in Japan and globally. Providing appropriate long-term care (LTC) for PLWH has thus become increasingly critical. Our study aimed to describe LTC setting preferences and related factors among middle-aged and older Japanese people living with HIV. A cross-sectional survey was conducted at two hospitals in Tokyo. One hundred seventy-five outpatients aged 40 years and above participated in this study. Participants completed an anonymous self-administered questionnaire to assess where they wanted to live once they could no longer care for themselves. Approximately 52.0% preferred a designated facility for older adults or LTC, while 30.3% preferred their home or living with family, a partner, or a friend (“familiar housing”). Bivariate analyses revealed that LTC setting preference was significantly associated with marital status, whether or not the participant had at least one child, and household composition. Furthermore, logistic regression analysis revealed that participants living with non-kin were less likely to prefer living in designated housing facilities for older adults or LTC (adjusted odds ratio = 0.17, 95% confidence interval: 0.05 - 0.63). The study findings suggest that family make-up and composition of cohabiters are critical indicators for LTC setting preference in this population. These findings can be the foundation for future care planning and delivery to meet the unique LTC needs and expectations of the aging population with HIV in Japan and similar global settings. 展开更多

The effect of nutrition education using self-monitoring of blood glucose on glycemic control was investigated in the present study. Of 36 males and 25 females aged 30 - 69 years under outpatient treatment at 3 hospitals in Niigata prefecture, Japan, 61 non-insulin-treated obese type 2 diabetes patients with HbA1c of 6.9% - 9.3% and body mass index of 25 kg/m2 or higher were randomly allocated. Thirty and 31 patients were analyzed in intervention and control groups, respectively. The intervention group performed self-monitoring of blood glucose 2 hours after supper twice a week for 6 months and underwent nutrition education on the association between meals and postprandial blood glucose once every 2 months. The primary outcome was glycated hemoglobin, with the secondary outcome of body mass index. Stages of change for eating the appropriate supper amount were investigated to verify the process of the educational effect, and satisfaction with diabetes treatment and well-being were investigated to verify the continuity of treatment. On intention-to-treat analysis, glycated hemoglobin (mean ± SD) decreased from 7.9% ± 0.6% to 7.7% ± 0.6% in the intervention group but increased from 7.9% ± 0.6% to 8.1% ± 0.6% in the control group, showing a significant difference in the change after intervention between the groups (p = 0.027). In the intervention group, body mass index decreased from 28.9 ± 3.8 to 28.4 ± 3.7 kg/m2 (p = 0.019), the stages of change to learn the appropriate amount of supper progressed (p = 0.026), and satisfaction with diabetes treatment increased (p = 0.031). 展开更多

To examine the potential ability of edible mushrooms to act as biocatalysts, 19 basidiomycete strains were screened. Modified media (PG, O, and PGO medium) for liquid cultivation of these basidiomycete strains were designed and tested. Wet cells (>10 g) of 4 basidiomycete strains (Pleurotus salmoneostramineus H7, P. salmoneostramineus H13, Ganoderma lucidum NBRC31863, Flammulina velutipes NBRC31862) were harvested from PGO medium for 7 days. The stereoselective reduction of α-keto esters using the 4 strains was tested. It was found that each of these strains had a reducing activity toward 6 aliphatic α-keto esters. In the presence of L-alanine as an additive, the reduction of ethyl 2-oxobutanoate and ethyl 2-oxopentanoete by P. salmoneostramineus H7 produced the corresponding alcohol with a high conversion ratio and with excellent enantiomeric excess (>99% e.e. (R)). Furthermore, ethyl pyruvate, ethyl 2-oxobutanoate, and ethyl 2-oxopentanoate were predominantly reduced to the corresponding (R)-hydroxy ester (>99% e.e.) by G. lucidum. Thus, we found that these edible mushrooms have great potential to be used as biocatalysts for the stereoselective reduction of carbonyl compounds. 展开更多

This study investigated the vibration frequency in micro-vibration therapy (MVT) performed as a part of nursing care in Japan. We surveyed 31 nurses (25 women and 6 men) who performed MVT with accelerometers attached to the backs of their hands, and the data obtained were analyzed. The mean vibration frequency was 8.3 Hz (standard deviation [SD]: 1.9 Hz) bilaterally, with a left-right difference of 0.8 Hz (SD: 1.1 Hz, right > left). Furthermore, vibration frequency was correlated with duration of MVT use (rs = 0.5, P < 0.01). The vibration frequency was higher in men (9.2 Hz, SD: 2.4 Hz) than in women (8.1 Hz, SD: 1.8 Hz), but this difference was not significant (P = 0.34). The vibrations of MVT are of a lower frequency than those of other vibration therapies. 展开更多
