A Case Study of Periodical Terminologies’Mis-translations in History of Chinese Journalism by Ko Kung-chen under Analysis-Synthesis Translation Mode

From the perspective of analysis-synthesis translation mode,this paper discusses the translator’s responsibility and the translator’s role in the translation of historiography,based on the case of Ko Kung-chen’s History of Chinese Journalism.Missionary J.S.Roberts believed that translation is the logical combination of two processes of analysis and synthesis.The analysis process is characterized by understanding,emphasizing accurate understanding and professional analysis of the source text,while the synthesis process focuses on the transformation of language and culture.The two processes are dependent,forming the whole process of translation altogether.As the indisputable subject of translation,the translator should assume his own subjective responsibility in the two processes.The translator should be responsible for the fact and professional academics in the analysis process,and language and culture and translation itself in the synthesis process,playing the role of a reviewer,disseminator and translator to ensure that the translation text would be correct,accurate and professional so as to realize the value of himself and translation.

A Survey on Foreign Tourists’English Translation of Guangdong Tourism Images

Metaphor,constituting culture as well as inheriting one,is a way that human beings perceive the world.The study of cognitive metaphor theory in translation illustrates the process how the people construct psychological images from one culture to another,from one language to another.A survey on Chinese to English translation has been conducted among foreigners to see their intuitive understandings of some Guangdong tourism images.The results found out three different familiarity levels of these tourism images and the English translations from the viewpoint of the foreigners.Translation can be done without understanding the actual meanings,and understanding can occur without being able to translate.

On Ethical Literary Criticism and Game Theory--An Interview with Professor Nie Zhenzhao

In 2014,Huang Kaihong,a professor at School of Foreign Languages and Cultures,Southwest University of Science and Technology,interviewed the Doctoral advisor Professor Nie Zhenzhao during the period of his academic visiting to Central China Normal University.As early as in 2005,Huang Kaihong conducted an interview with Professor Nie Zhenzhao on the topic of the general introduction of ethical literary criticism.So around 11 years later,the second interview mainly covers not only the ethical literary criticism theory,but the game theory and the relationship between them as well.Professor Nie thinks whether the game theory can be applied to literature research is still under discussion.The theory of ethical literary criticism is a kind of methodology based on science and it can get the attention of literary critics at home and abroad,which is because it fits the practical needs of literary criticism,draws the literary criticism away from only emphasizing criticism genres and the research of criticism terms,and pays attention to the true nature of the literary text in literature research.After consulting Professor Nie Zhenzhao about some related questions from the perspective of game theory.Huang Kaihong gets some significant information concerning literature research and understands the latest core terms and the concrete application method of ethical literary criticism,especially the relationship between the instructing and aesthetic functions of literature.

Studies of Public Discourse in the Chinese Sociocultural Context:An Introduction

In this special column,we present four papers on the general theme of"Studies of Public Discourse in the Chinese Context.Here we broadly understand public discourse as'any discourse produced for and by members of specialized sectors of society,organized through specific types of social order,who act in accordance with designated specific purposes,all of which is beyond the discursive scope of everyday life"(Strauss&Feiz,2014,p.76).Public discourse is generally characterized by the following features:(1)it involves particular expertise or professional knowledge;(2)it is goal-oriented;(3)it is socially ordered and shaped;and(4)it can be multivocal,multilingual and multimodal.In this column,the four papers are concerned with the broad topic areas,or registers,of legal discourse,media discourse,internet discourse,and commercial discourse.The authors have approached their research questions from a variety of conceptual and methodological approaches.

A Case Study on Anxiety of University English Teachers as Visiting Scholars in Their Collaborative Learning

The study is to explore the test anxiety of three university English teachers in their collaborative learning community when they do their visiting scholar program.The research questions are about the representations of test anxiety of the college English teacher collaborative learning community as visiting scholars,and the interaction between anxiety and their collaborative learning.The main data collection includes deep interview,field observation,online chatting,etc.The research finds that at the three stages of their learning,the participant shows various representations of test anxiety from cognitive,affective and behavioral perspectives,and collaborative learning community facilitates the participant have better execution in learning,more pressure released and much cognitive enhancement achieved.In contrast,lack of collaborative learning environment in her working university and the specific anxiety for marriage in female participant are two additional findings in the study,which may prove the positive effect of collaborative learning on anxiety from another point of view.

For Foreign-Oriented Chinese Literature Translation,What Inspirations Can Be Derived from the Carrying out of the Translation Project of the King James Version of The Bible?

Inspired by the“One Belt,One Road”initiative and the“Going Global”strategy,China has become more deeply involved in foreign exchange.The introduction of Chinese literature to the outside world has been part of China’s soft-power strategy.However,it must be acknowledged that the quality of Chinese literature translation is not satisfactory for several reasons:essentially,issues relating to project management,translators’qualifications,and translation quality control.This essay reviews the translation practice that gave rise to the King James Bible(KJB),with a focus on its project management,translators’qualifications and quality control.It is hoped that this will serve to enlighten professionals in the field of Chinese literature translation.

Native-speakerism in China:An Investigation of Foreign Language Education Policy and Learners’Attitudes

With the development of globalization,the use of English is no longer restricted to native speaker(NS)but also widely spread to non-native speaker(NNS).The importance of English learning is also acknowledged by Expanding and Outer Circle,and English as a foreign language(EFL)education plays a significant role in China’s education.Admitting the fact that non-native English teachers(NNESTs)take up a large proportion of English teachers,English language teaching(ELT)is still greatly influenced by native-speakerism.This research aims to investigate language ideologies reflected in Chinese foreign language education policy(FLEP)at higher education level,and Chinese English learners’attitudes towards native-speakerism and English teachers.A mixed method of policy analysis and survey is adopted in this research.After conducting analysing two FLEPs in higher education level,it is found that linguistic instrumentalism is the prominent language ideology,although native-speakerism and standard English ideology is implicitly demonstrated.Questionnaire is used to investigate 58 Chinese English learners’attitudes,revealing that most participants do not demonstrate bias towards either NESTs or NNESTs.Instead,the strengths and weaknesses of both NEST and NNEST are identified,though participants adhere to native-speakerism in terms of English variety.Overall,English learner’s attitudes are consistent with language ideologies in FLEPs.This research may provide implications for future studies on addressing native-speakerism in Chinese FLEPs,as well as relationship of students’attitudes and language policies.

On the Cognition of Second Language Mental Lexicon and Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language

Teaching Chinese as a foreign language is actually the teaching of Chinese as a second language by international Chinese teachers.People must learn vocabulary as a language element in the process of language acquisition.Without vocabulary,there is no language.When we master the vocabulary of a language,we rely on mental lexicon,which is vocabulary that has been stored in the brain for a long time.Through the study of second language mental lexicon,it can be used effectively,and corresponding teaching methods can be used in the vocabulary teaching of Chinese as a foreign language to help students learn Chinese quickly and effectively.

Future Directions in Studies on Student Perception of Teacher Written Feedback

Teacher feedback plays a key role in teaching second language writing. Though teachers have devoted a great deal oftime to giving written feedback to L2 students, some students complained that they benefit little from written feedback. This studyreviews research on the effectiveness of teacher written feedback in ESL context or EFL context in United States, and tries to sug-gest future direction in further research.

Metric Identification of Vertices in Polygonal Cacti

The distance between two vertices u and v in a connected graph G is the number of edges lying in a shortest path(geodesic)between them.A vertex x of G performs the metric identification for a pair(u,v)of vertices in G if and only if the equality between the distances of u and v with x implies that u=v(That is,the distance between u and x is different from the distance between v and x).The minimum number of vertices performing the metric identification for every pair of vertices in G defines themetric dimension of G.In this paper,we performthemetric identification of vertices in two types of polygonal cacti:chain polygonal cactus and star polygonal cactus.

Consumer behavior patterns of carbon neutral label using the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology

China has paid considerable attention to developing and implementing a carbon labeling system in response to increasing environmental issues such as global warming.This paper aims to provide a theoretical basis for formulating and implementing a carbon labeling system in China through a study of consumer acceptance behavior and its influencing factors.This paper constructed an extended model of consumers’acceptance behavior of carbon neutral labels based on the theories and methods of Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology(UTAUT)and analyzed the effects of five factors(carbon label cognition,performance expectancy,effort expectancy,social influence,and facilitating factors)on consumer carbon neutral label acceptance and adoption.The structural equation model analysis revealed that carbon label cognition,performance expectancy,social influence,and facilitating factors significantly,and positively impact consumers’acceptance of carbon neutral labels.Moreover,carbon label cognition,performance expectancy,and facilitating factors significantly,and positively affect consumers’carbon neutral label adoption behavior.Meanwhile,carbon label cognition,and effort expectancy have no significant impact on consumers’willingness to accept carbon neutral labels,which in turn significantly impacts consumers’carbon neutral label adoption behavior.According to the research findings,increasing the promotion of carbon labeling and improving the practical strategies and management recommendations for carbon label design are proposed.

The New Meaning of “Bond” of Jiban in Chinese: A Study of Cultural, Accepted, and Social Dimensions

Jiban,a term that means“fetter”in Chinese,is commonly used to denote the“bond between people”within a Chinese context.The meaning of“bond”of jiban is derived from the Japanese word kizuna.From a cultural standpoint,the association between the meanings of jiban and kizuna is interconnected on a cultural level.From an accepted perspective,the emergence of the new meaning of jiban encompasses various factors within the accepted context,and individuals gain a comprehensive understanding of the meaning“bond”through the cognitive processes of meaning,motivation,and aesthetics.From a societal viewpoint,the distribution of the original meaning and the new meaning of jiban differs significantly across various language environments.Furthermore,the acceptance of the new meaning of jiban is currently witnessing a growing trend among a specific group,necessitating attention and further investigation.

Since the early 1970s,discourse analysis has garnered significant attention across various academic disciplines,marked by the proliferation of numerous theoretical frameworks.Then the profound impact of discourse analysis on the field of translation research has become increasingly apparent,with a substantial body of translation studies embracing the discourse analysis approach.The disciplinary significance of discourse analysis has become undeniable.Contemporary China is in a relatively weak position in global cultural communication.To advance Chinese culture on the global stage,Chinese literary works serve as a precious channel.To effectively showcase the unique qualities of Chinese literature,translators must consider a multitude of influencing factors and address them judiciously to enable target language readers to fully immerse themselves in the essence of Chinese literary artistry.This paper takes Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang’s translation of Kong Yiji as an example to elucidate the function of discourse analysis in translation of Chinese literature.

Optimal Portfolio Selection with Delay under the Framework of Uncertainty Theory

This study focuses on investigating the optimal investment strategy for an optimization problem with delay using the uncertainty theory. The financial market is composed of a risk-free asset and a risk asset with an uncertain price process described by an uncertain differential equation. An optimization problem is assumed that its objective is a nonlinear function of decision variable. By deriving the equation of optimality, an analytical solution is obtained for the optimal delay investment strategy, and the optimal delay value function. Finally, an economic analysis and numerical sensitivity analysis are conducted to evaluate the research results.

Translation of Metro Station Names in Guangzhou and Foshan from the Perspective of Symbolic Function of Translation Landscape

Guangzhou and Foshan enjoy relatively mature metro network.However,some names of metro stations are over-transliterated in Pinyin.Such a translation method is used in translating general names,nouns of locality and some names of tourist destinations.With translation landscape and linguistic landscape theories,the reasons and impacts of over-transliteration in Guangzhou and Foshan metro will be discussed from the perspective of symbolic function.English names of Metro stations in other cities serve as a reference so as to appropriate solutions.
