Biochar is a carbon sink material with the potential to improve water retention in various soils. However, for the long‐term maintenance of green infrastructure, there is an additional need to regulate the water contents in the covers to maintain vegetation growth in semiarid conditions. In this study, biochar‐amended soil was combined with subsurface drip irrigation, and the water preservation characteristics of this treatment were investigated through a series of one‐dimensional soil column tests. To ascertain the best treatment method specific to semiarid climatic conditions, the test soil was amended with 0%,1%,3%,and 5%biochar.Automatic irrigation devices equipped with soil moisture sensors were used to control the subsurface water content with the aim of enhancing vegetation growth. Each soil column test lasted 150 h,during which the volumetric water contents and soil suction data were recorded. The experimental results reveal that the soil specimen amended with 3%biochar is the most water‐saving regardless of the time cost.Soil with a higher biochar content(e.g.,5%)consumes a more significant amount of water due to the enhancement of the water‐holding capacity.Based on the experimental results,it can be concluded that the appropriate ratio can be determined within 1%–3%,which can reduce not only the amount of irrigated/used water but also the time cost.Such technology can be explored for water content regulation in green infrastructure and the development of barriers for protecting the environment around deep underground waste containment. 展开更多

Mineral carbonation is emerging as a reliable CO_(2) capture technology that can mitigate climate change. In lime-treated clayey soils, mineral carbonation occurs through the carbonation of free lime and cementitious products derived from pozzolanic reactions. The kinetics of the reactions in lime-treated clayey soils are variable and depend primarily on soil mineralogy. The present study demonstrates the role of soil mineralogy in CO_(2) capture and the subsequent changes caused by carbon mineralization in terms of the unconfined compressive strength(UCS)of lime-treated soils during their service life.Three clayey soils(kaolin, bentonite, and silty clay)with different mineralogical characteristics were treated with 4%lime content, and the samples were cured in a controlled environment for 7 d,90 d,180 d,and 365 d.After the specified curing periods, the samples were exposed to CO_(2) in a carbonation cell for 7 d.The non-carbonated samples purged with N2 gas were used as a benchmark to compare the mechanical,chemical-mineralogical,and microstructure changes caused by carbonation reactions.Experimental investigations indicated that exposure to CO_(2) resulted in an average increase of 10%in the UCS of limetreated bentonite, whereas the strength of lime-treated kaolin and silty clay was reduced by an average of 35%.The chemical and microstructural analyses revealed that the precipitated carbonates effectively filled the macropores of the treated bentonite, compared to the inadequate cementation caused by pozzolanic reactions, resulting in strength enhancement. In contrast, strength loss in lime-treated kaolin and silty clay was attributed to the carbonation of cementitious phases and partly to the tensile stress induced by carbonate precipitation. In terms of carbon mineralization prospects,lime-treated kaolin exhibited maximum carbonation due to the higher availability of unreacted lime. The results suggest that,in addition to the increase in compressive strength, adequate calcium-bearing phases and macropores determine the efficiency of carbon mineralization in lime-treated clayey soils. 展开更多

The study presents a comprehensive coupled thermo-bio-chemo-hydraulic(T-BCH)modeling framework for stabilizing soils using microbially induced calcite precipitation(MICP).The numerical model considers relevant multiphysics involved in MICP,such as bacterial ureolytic activities, biochemical reactions, multiphase and multicomponent transport, and alteration of the porosity and permeability. The model incorporates multiphysical coupling effects through well-established constitutive relations that connect parameters and variables from different physical fields. It was implemented in the open-source finite element code OpenGeoSys(OGS),and a semi-staggered solution strategy was designed to solve the couplings, allowing for flexible model settings. Therefore, the developed model can be easily adapted to simulate MICP applications in different scenarios. The numerical model was employed to analyze the effect of various factors, including temperature, injection strategies, and application scales.Besides,a TBCH modeling study was conducted on the laboratory-scale domain to analyze the effects of temperature on urease activity and precipitated calcium carbonate. To understand the scale dependency of MICP treatment,a large-scale heterogeneous domain was subjected to variable biochemical injection strategies. The simulations conducted at the field-scale guided the selection of an injection strategy to achieve the desired type and amount of precipitation.Additionally, the study emphasized the potential of numerical models as reliable tools for optimizing future developments in field-scale MICP treatment. The present study demonstrates the potential of this numerical framework for designing and optimizing the MICP applications in laboratory-,prototype-,and field-scale scenarios. 展开更多

Geomaterials with inferior hydraulic and strength characteristics often need improvement to enhance their engineering behaviors.Traditional ground improvement techniques require enormous mechanical effort or synthetic chemicals.Sustainable stabilization technique such as microbially induced calcite precipitation(MICP)utilizes bacterial metabolic processes to precipitate cementitious calcium carbonate. The reactive transport of biochemical species in the soil mass initiates the precipitation of biocement during the MICP process. The precipitated biocement alters the hydro-mechanical performance of the soil mass.Usually, the flow, deformation, and transport phenomena regulate the biocementation technique via coupled bio-chemo-hydro-mechanical(BCHM)processes.Among all,one crucial phenomenon controlling the precipitation mechanism is the encapsulation of biomass by calcium carbonate.Biomass encapsulation can potentially reduce the biochemical reaction rate and decelerate biocementation.Laboratory examination of the encapsulation process demands a thorough analysis of associated coupled effects.Despite this,a numerical model can assist in capturing the coupled processes influencing encapsulation during the MICP treatment. However, most numerical models did not consider biochemical reaction rate kinetics accounting for the influence of bacterial encapsulation.Given this, the current study developed a coupled BCHM model to evaluate the effect of encapsulation on the precipitated calcite content using a micro-scale semiempirical relationship.Firstly, the developed BCHM model was verified and validated using numerical and experimental observations of soil column tests.Later, the encapsulation phenomenon was investigated in the soil columns of variable maximum calcite crystal sizes. The results depict altered reaction rates due to the encapsulation phenomenon and an observable change in the precipitated calcite content for each maximum crystal size.Furthermore, the permeability and deformation of the soil mass were affected by the simultaneous precipitation of calcium carbonate.Overall, the present study comprehended the influence of the encapsulation of bacteria on cement morphology-induced permeability,biocement-induced stresses and displacements. 展开更多

Damage caused due to low-velocity impacts in composites leads to substantial deterioration in their residual strength and eventually provokes structural failure. This work presents an experimental investigation on the effects of different patch and parent laminate stacking sequences on the enhancement of impact strength of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers(CFRP)composites by utilising the adhesively bonded external patch repair technique.Damage evolution study is also performed with the aid of Acoustic Emission(AE).Two different quasi-isotropic configurations were selected for the parent laminate,viz.,[45°/45°/0°/0°]s and[45°/0°/45°/0°]s.Quasi Static Indentation(QSI)test was performed on both the pristine laminates, and damage areas were detected by using the C-scan inspection technique.Damaged laminates were repaired by using a single-sided patch of two different configurations,viz.,[45°/45°/45°/45°]and[45°/0°/0°/45°],and employing a circular plug to fill the damaged hole.Four different combinations of repaired laminates with two configurations of each parent and patch laminate were produced, which were further subjected to the QSI test. The results reveal the effectiveness of the repair method,as all the repaired laminates show higher impact resistance compared to the respective pristine laminates.Patches of[45°/0°/0°/45°]configuration when repaired by taking[45°/45°/0°/0°]s and[45°/0°/45°/0°]s as parents exhibited 68%and 73%higher peak loads, respectively, than the respective pristine laminates.Furthermore, parent and patch of configuration[45°/0°/45°/0°]s and[45°/0°/0°/45°],respectively,attain the highest peak load,whereas[45°/45°/0°/0°]s and[45°/45°/45°/45°]combinations possess the most gradual decrease in the load. 展开更多

Compacted clay liners are an integral part of the waste landfills, which are provided to contain the leachate within the landfills and protect the surrounding environment.Generally, locally available natural soils are used for the construction of compacted clay liners if they satisfy the design criteria. However, not all soils in their natural state satisfy all the design criteria for the liner materials. Thus, there is a definite need to modify the locally available natural soils by blending with bentonite to meet the required design criteria for the liners. In view of this, the present study evaluates the suitability of an Indian red soil enhanced with bentonite as a liner material. To achieve this,a series of experiments were carried out using locally available red soil and bentonite.First, the suitability of the red soil was evaluated as a liner material. The experimental results showed that the red soil met all the selection criteria stipulated by the Environmental Protection Agencies(EPAs)for the liners except the hydraulic conductivity criterion. Therefore, the red soil was mixed with bentonite contents of 10%,20%and 30%,and the red soil-bentonite mixtures were evaluated for their suitability for liners in their compacted state.Further,as the liners in the arid and semi-arid regions are subjected to moisture variations due to seasonal moisture fluctuations and other factors, the red soil-bentonite mixtures were subjected to wetdry cycles, and their suitability was evaluated after wet-dry cycles. The experimental results revealed that all the red soil-bentonite mixtures met the stipulated EPA criteria for the liners in the as-compacted state. However, the red soil-bentonite mixtures with 20%and 30%bentonite contents only satisfied the hydraulic conductivity requirement even after wet-dry cycles. The experimental findings were supplemented with the microstructural insights captured through digital camera images, scanning electron microscopy(SEM),and mercury intrusion porosimetry(MIP)studies. 展开更多

Magnesium and magnesium in-situ composites have significant potential in the application of design and manufacturing for automotive and aerospace industries because of their high specific strength and reduced fuel consumption. But there are many challenges for machining of Mg based alloys and composites because of the high tendency of fire and oxidation. These challenges can be minimized through microstructural engineering. In this present study, the machining performances of AZ91 Mg alloy and in-situ hybrid TiC+TiB_(2)reinforced AZ91 metal matrix composite was investigated. The effectβ-Mg_(17)Al_(12)phases and grain refinement with and without in-situ particles on machinability were studied through microstructural engineering via aging and friction stir processing. The end milling operation was carried out at different cutting speeds ranging from 25 mm/min to 90 mm/min under dry environment by using an AlTiN-coated tungsten carbide tool. The optimum cutting speed for machining was found to be 75 mm/min based on the surface roughness values of all conditioned materials. The base material with dendritic microstructure was found to have poor machinability in terms of inadequate surface finish and edge-burrs formation. The combined effect of in-situ TiC+TiB_(2)particles addition and grain refinement enhanced the machining performance of the material with superior surface finish, negligible edge-burr formation and better tool wear resistance. The influence of in-situ TiC+TiB_(2)particles,β-Mg_(17)Al_(12)phases and grain refinement on machining characteristics are explained based on the tool wear mechanisms, chip behavior and machining induced affected zone. 展开更多

This paper investigates the effects of pH on stability and thermal properties of copper oxide(CuO),graphene oxide(GO),and their hybrid nanofluid(HNF)at different mixing ratios.Initially,sol-gel and Hummer’s method was employed for the synthesis of CuO and GO nanoparticles(NPs),and they are characterized with various techniques. The effects of two different surfactants were analyzed on nanofluid’s(NF’s)stability at different pH values. The properties like thermal conductivity(TC)and viscosity(VST)of NFs were measured at different volume concentration(0.1 vol%to 1.0 vol%)and temperature range of 30-60℃,respectively.The TC and VST of GO/CuO(50:50)HNF are higher than that of GO/CuO(20:80).The figure of merit(FOM)is determined for the studied HNFs.The correlations were presented to calculate the TC as well as VST of HNFs.Two modern novel machine learning-based ensemble approaches were employed for predictive model development for TC and VST of considered HNFs.The comparison of prognostic models with Taylor’s diagram revealed that Bayesian optimized support vector machine(BoASVM)was superior to Bayesian optimized boosted regression trees(BoA-BRT)for both TC and VST models. 展开更多

Auxetic materials are cellular materials with a unique property of negative Poisson’s ratio. The auxeticity and performance of these metamaterials utterly depend on the geometrical parameters and loading direction. For the first time, the quasi-static uniaxial compression performance of fused filament fabricated re-entrant diamond auxetic metamaterial is evaluated in the x-direction(in-plane)and z-direction(out-of-plane).The most commonly used thermoplastic feedstock,Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene,is considered a material of choice. The effect of influential geometrical parameters of the re-entrant diamond structure and printing parameter is systematically studied using Taguchi’s design of experiments.Grey-based multi-objective optimisation technique has been adopted to arrive at the optimal structure.Efforts are made to improve the stiffness and strength of the structure with fibre reinforcements.Micro glass fibre reinforcements have enhanced specific strength and stiffness in both in-plane and out-ofplane directions.A sevenfold and thirteen times increase in specific strength and energy absorption is evident for glass fibre-reinforced structures in out-of-plane directions compared to in-plane ones.Proper tuning of geometrical parameters of the re-entrant diamond structure can result in a Poisson’s ratio of up to-3.49 when tested in the x-direction.The parametric study has illustrated the tailorability of the structure according to the application requirements. The statistical study has signified each considered parameter’s contribution to the compression performance characteristics of the 3D printed re-entrant diamond auxetic metamaterial. 展开更多

The conventional case of patch repair involves bonding a patch over single damage/hole in the laminate. This work investigates the effect of interaction of two holes on the tensile behavior patch repaired carbon epoxy woven laminates. The specimens of[0°/45°/45°/0°]laminates were repaired with adhesively bonded two-ply[45°]2external patches.Three different cases of drilled specimens were produced with different hole arrangements viz.specimens with single central hole(SH),with two holes aligned along the longitudinal axis(LH)and with two holes along transverse axis(TH).The two-hole specimens were repaired with two different types,i.e.single large patches(SP)and with the two smaller patches(DP)of combined bonding area equal to the single large patches.Digital image correlation(DIC)was employed to capture strain contours. The results reveal the difference in the load transfer through the patches depending upon the arrangement of holes. The TH repaired specimen exhibit significant load recovery(SP-32.75%,DP-34.62%)while the LH specimens result in very marginal(SP-6.11%,DP-4.10%)recovery compared to their drilled case. The TH specimen failed by crack growing through both the holes beneath the patch, while the LH specimens failed by the failure through only one hole. The use of single large patch over multiple holes and multiple small patches individually over each hole has no significant influence on load recovery. 展开更多

Fifty-seven bacteria were isolated from Southern Ocean (Indian sector) water samples which were collected from different latitude and longitude of the ocean. All the isolates were able to grow at 4℃, 20℃, 37℃ and tolerable NaCI concentration up to 13.5% (w/v). 29 out of 57 isolates were identified using 16S rDNA amplification and the sequences were submitted to National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). All the isolates were classified by using Ribosomal Database Project (RDP) and found that isolates belongs to Proteobacteria and Bacteriodes. The average G+C content was 56.4%. The isolates were screened for the presence of extracellular enzymes, viz. amylase, catalase, urease, esterase, lipase and protease. The disc diffusion method is used to screen antibiotic production by the isolates against four pathogenic bacteria, viz. Salmonella typhimurium (NCIM 2501), Staphylococcus aureus (NCIM 2122), Bacillus subtilis (NCIM 2193), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (NCIM 2036). Nine out of 29 were found to be antibiotic producer. 展开更多

Quantification of seismic activity is one of the most challenging problems faced by earthquake engineers in probabilistic seismic hazard analysis. Currently, this problem has been attempted using empirical approaches which are based on the regional earthquake recurrence relations from the available earth- quake catalogue. However, at a specified site of engineering interest, these empirical models are asso- ciated with large number of uncertainties due to lack of sufficient data. Due to these uncertainties, engineers need to develop mechanistic models to quantify seismic activity. A wide range of techniques for modeling continental plates provides useful insights on the mechanics of plates and their seismic activity. Among the different continental plates, the Indian plate experiences diffused seismicity. In India, although Himalaya is regarded as a plate boundary and active region, the seismicity database indicates that there are other regions in the Indian shield reporting sporadic seismic activity. It is expected that mechanistic models of Indian plate, based on finite element method, simulate stress fields that quantify the seismic potential of active regions in India, This article explores the development of a finite element model for Indian plate by observing the simulated stress field for various boundary conditions, geological and theological conditions. The study observes that the magnitude and direction of stresses in the plate is sensitive to these conditions, The numerical analysis of the models shows that the simulated stress field represents the active seismic zones in India. 展开更多

Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation(RUSLE) model coupled with transport limited sediment delivery(TLSD) function was used to predict the longtime average annual soil loss, and to identify the critical erosion-/deposition-prone areas in a tropical mountain river basin, viz., Muthirapuzha River Basin(MRB; area=271.75 km^2), in the southern Western Ghats, India. Mean gross soil erosion in MRB is 14.36 t ha^(-1) yr^(-1), whereas mean net soil erosion(i.e., gross erosion-deposition) is only 3.60 t ha^(-1) yr^(-1)(i.e., roughly 25% of the gross erosion). Majority of the basin area(~86%) experiences only slight erosion(<5 t ha^(-1) yr^(-1)), and nearly 3% of the area functions as depositional environment for the eroded sediments(e.g., the terraces of stream reaches, the gentle plains as well as the foot slopes of the plateau scarps and the terrain with concordant summits). Although mean gross soil erosion rates in the natural vegetation belts are relatively higher, compared to agriculture, settlement/built-up areas and tea plantation, the sediment transport efficiency in agricultural areas and tea plantation is significantly high, reflecting the role of human activities on accelerated soil erosion. In MRB, on a mean basis, 0.42 t of soil organic carbon(SOC) content is being eroded per hectare annually, and SOC loss from the 4th order subbasins shows considerable differences, mainly due to the spatial variability in the gross soil erosion rates among the sub-basins. The quantitative results, on soil erosion and deposition, modelled using RUSLE and TLSD, are expected to be beneficial while formulating comprehensive land management strategies for reducing the extent of soil degradation in tropical mountain river basins. 展开更多

In the present study,AZ31 magnesium alloy sheets were processed by friction stir processing(FSP)to investigate the effect of the grain refinement and grain size distribution on the corrosion behavior.Grain refinement from a starting size of 16.4±6.8µm to 3.2±1.2µm was attained after FSP.Remarkably, bimodal grain size distribution was observed in the nugget zone with a combination of coarse(11.62±8.4µm)and fine grains(3.2±1.2µm).Due to the grain refinement,a slight improvement in the hardness was found in the nugget zone of FSPed AZ31.The bimodal grain size distribution in the stir zone showed pronounced influence on the corrosion rate of FSPed AZ31 as observed from the immersion and electrochemical tests. From the X-ray diffraction analysis, more amount of Mg(OH)_(2) was observed on FSPed AZ31 compared with the unprocessed AZ31.Polarization measurements demonstrated the higher corrosion current density for FSPed AZ31(8.92×10^(−5)A/cm^(2))compared with the unprocessed condition(2.90×10^(−5)A/cm^(2))that can be attributed to the texture effect and large variations in the grain size which led to non-uniform galvanic intensities. 展开更多

Bead-on-plate friction stir welds were made on P91 alloy with low and high rotational speeds(100 and 1000 RPM) to study their effects on weld microstructural changes and impression creep behavior. Temperatures experienced by the stir zone were recorded at the weld tool tip. Different zones of welds were characterized for their microstructural changes, hardness and creep behavior(by impression creep tests). The results were compared with submerged arc fusion weld. Studies revealed that the stir zone temperature with 100 RPM was well below A_(c1) temperature of P91 steel while it was above A_(c3) with 1000 RPM. The results suggest that the microstructural degradation in P91 welds can be controlled by low temperature friction stir welding technique. 展开更多

In this work, the first attempt has been made to model phase equilibria of semiclathrate hydrates of CH4, CO2 and N2 in aqueous solution of TBAB. A thermodynamic model for gas hydrate system as proposed by Chen and Guo has been extended for semiclathrate hydrates of gases in aqueous solution of TBAB. A correlation for the activity of water relating to the system temperature, concentration of TBAB in the system and the nature of guest gas molecule has been proposed. The model results have been validated against available experimental data on phase equilibria of semiclathrate hydrate systems of aqueous TBAB with different gases as guest molecule. The extended Chen and Guo's model is found to be suitable to explain the promotion effect of TBAB for the studied gaseous system such as, methane, carbon dioxide and nitrogen as a guest molecule. Additionally, a correlation for the increase in equilibrium formation temperature (hydrate promotion temperature, ATp) of semiclathrate hydrate system with respect to pure gas hydrate system has been developed and applied to semiclathrate hydrate of TBAB with several gases as guest molecules. The developed correlation is found to predict the promotion effect satisfactorily for the system studied. 展开更多

The microstructure, mechanical properties and fracture behavior of an as-received QE22 alloy have been investigated under different thermal conditions, including solution treated(ST),under aged(UA),peak aged(PA)and over aged(OA)conditions.A significant increase in hardness of 27%,yield strength of 60%and ultimate tensile strength of 19%was observed in peak aged sample as compared to solution treated sample. The improvements of mechanical strength properties are mainly associated with the metastable λ and β′precipitates.Grain growth was not observed in the ST samples after subjecting to UA and PA treatments due to the presence of eutectic Mg_(12)Nd particles along the grain boundaries. In over aged sample, significant grain growth occurred because of dissolution of eutectic phase particles.Different natures of crack initiation and propagation were observed under different thermal conditions during tensile testing at room temperature. The mode of failure of solution treated sample is transgranular, cleavage and twin boundary fractures.A mixed mode of transgranular, intergranular, cleavage and twin boundary failure is observed in both peak aged and over aged samples. 展开更多

Existence of tension–compression yield asymmetry is a serious limitation to the load bearing capablities of Magnesium alloys in a number of light weight structural applications. The present work is aimed at nullifying the tension to compression asymmetry problem and strain hardening anomalies in a Magnesium–Silver–Rare Earth alloy by engineering different levels of microstructural conditions via friction stir processing and post process annealing. The existence and extent of yield asymmetry ratio in the range of microstructural conditions was experimentally obtained through quasistatic tensile and compression tests. The yield asymmetry problem was profoundly present in specimens of coarse grained microstructures when compared to their fine grained and ultra fine grained counterparts. The impact of the microstructure and associated mechanisms of plasticity on the macroscopic strain hardening behavior was established by Kock–Mecking’s analysis.Crystal plasticity simulations using Viscoplastic Self Consistency approach revealed the consequential role of extension twinning mechanism for the existence of yield asymmetry and anomalies in strain hardening behavior. This was especially dominant with coarsening of grain size.Electron Microscopy and characterization were conducted thoroughly in partially deformed specimens to confirm the predictions of the above simulations. The role of crystallographic texture for inducing the polarity to Tension–Compression yield asymmetry was corroborated.A critical grain size in Magnesium–Silver–Rare earth alloy was hereby established which could nullify influences of extension twinning in yield asymmetry ratio. 展开更多
