The Renditions Series and Modern Chinese Literature’s “Going-out”: Its Model and Enlightenment of Translation, Communication and Dissemination

In the process of Chinese Literature’s “Going-out” project, it istypical of the dilemma faced by the external translation and dissemination of modernChinese literature. The Renditions Series serves as a classical case of providing aneffective model of “literature’s overseas distribution”. The successful experience of itstranslating-cum-disseminating model can be concluded as follows: all the translatorsare from China and overseas with cross-cultural background; the selection oftranslation is stylistically far-ranging among the Mainland, Taiwan and Hong Kong,and feminine literature in modern China is highly valued; translating method aims atconvoying the original literary aesthetics, and disseminating channels are manifold;the foreign recipients are common and professional readers; the eminent effects canbe proved by its considerable sales, library collections and acceptance in the targetcountries and regions. From the successful model of translation of Renditions Series,five implications can be made out for the modern Chinese literature’s “Going-global”:domestic and overseas translators cooperate well with all-round cultural identities; theselection holds onto diversification and literary character; various spreading channelsshould be broadened; target readers should be accurately located and continuouslywidened; translating and disseminating effects can be focused on and analyzed, so asto adjust and improve the corresponding sections in the model.

Description Générale de la Chine is an important sinology masterpiece published in France in the late 18^(th) century.Its author Jean-Baptiste Grosier summarized and rearranged a large number of first-hand materials to systematically introduce China’s national traditions and culture.A great part of this book introduced ancient Chinese medicine,which facilitated the unbiased understanding of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)in Europe and fostered a knowledge dialogue between the Chinese and Western medicine systems.Such content also provided a historical reference for how to promote the further going out of TCM to the world.

From Xia People to Han People and to Chinese Nation——A Study of the Trajectory of the Cohesion and Integration of Chinese Ethnic Groups

Building multiethnic China was primarily driven by the cohesion and integration of main ethnic groups within Chinese territory, but the process was recorded according to traditional ethnic group discourse system of ancient China, so there is some doubt whether “nation state” theory can interpret it precisely. This paper manages to figure out the trajectory of cohesion and integration of main ethnic groups propelled by ancient Chinese people from the Xia Dynasty to the late Qing Dynasty by focusing on traditional views on ethnic groups of ancient China. This paper contend that although there were the phenomena of naming the products of the integrations after the regimes they belonged to,“Han people,”“Hua people” and even “Zhonghua(Chinese) people,” became the designations of main cohesive ethnic groups in China over time, and the concept of “Chen Min(subjects)” and the appearance of “nationals” that developed during the Qing Dynasty successfully transformed their identity, which Liang Qichao referred to as “Chinese nation”. Efforts by the rulers of the Qing Dynasty to bridge the gaps between different ethnic groups by developing a community of “subjects”(Chenmin), produced the concept of “Chinese nation” which included the various ethnic groups with the “Han people” as the main group. This new community merely represents the present-day cohesion of the Chinese Nation and the internal integration continues.

Edward H. Hume's Contributions to Introducing Chinese Medicine to the West

Known as the founder of Xiangya School of Medicine and Xiangya Hospital,Edward H.Hume is frequently praised for his pioneering work in bringing Western medicine to China.Some researchers have investigated his efforts in introducing Chinese medicine to the West;less known is the role that he later played as a lecturer on medical history at Johns Hopkins University.This paper presents an exhaustive review of Hume’s English writings on Chinese medicine,thus revealing what Hume did to introduce Chinese medicine to Western academia,and how he pioneered research into Chinese medicine from cultural and philosophical perspectives.

The Study on the Effects of Agricultural Policies to the Stock Price of Agricultural Companies of China

This paper attempts to use the intervention analysis model to study the impact of the release of the central Number 1 Documents on the stock price fluctuation of listed agricultural companies in China, and get the intervention value of the policy event on the stock return rate while separating the influence of the policy event. The results of the empirical study on the data of the study showed that the effect of the intervention on the results of the intervention was based on the publication of the "Number 1 Documents" in 2012 ~ 2013 as the intervention event. The results of the empirical study on the significance of biological breeding index and land transfer index (data from 2013) Intervention model, is consistent with the interpretation of the "Number 1 Documents".

Rethinking Yi’an(Medical Cases)as a Tool for Narrative Medicine in China

When narrative medicine(NM)was introduced into China,traditional Chinese medicine scholars found that the core concepts advocated by NM are manifested in Chinese yi’an.But why NM echoes with ancient Chinese yi’an?How can we better integrate NM into Chinese medical practices?To answer those questions,this article first investigates how NM establishes itself as a remedy to biomedicine by taking traditional healing models including TCM as its ideal Other.Then,the narrative traditions of both case histories and yi’an are examined respectively.This article argues that NM is searching for a lost tradition of narrative case histories,but yi’an functions as a living tradition of TCM.The Parallel Chart in NM,designed as a complement to the dehumanized hospital chart,is still based on a dichotomy of science and art and a conflictual doctor-patient model.But yi’an exemplifies the holistic and humane healthcare that NM hopes to achieve.A comparison of both genres also inspired us to rethink the genre of yi’an in NM.Thus,it is concluded that yi’an should be viewed as an epistemic genre integrating individualization and generalization,a bridge linking medicine and literature.And narrative yi’an can well serve as a tool for NM in China.It is also proposed that a thick description of yi’an be encouraged to further promote a pluralistic NM in China.

Does Rising House Price Push Chinese Households to“Leverage Up”More?-A Study from the Perspective of Heterogeneity of House-Buying Motivation

The rapid rise of leverage in Chinese household sector in recent years has attracted considerable attention,and high housing prices might be the main reason for the phenomenon.Do different house-buying motivations of households give an impetus to it?Researching this problem is of great importance to understand mechanisms for the formation of household leverage and taking targeted housing policies.Theoretical analysis in this paper fi nds that if house-buying motivation that was speculative was quite obvious,rising housing prices would result in the leverage of non-fi rst-house(NFH)households outpacing that of first-house(FH)households.On this basis,we conducted empirical analysis with a state-owned bank’s all housing mortgage loan data on 70 large and medium-sized cities for 2016 and the IV(instrumental variables)and DID(differences-in-differences)methods,and compared the two types of households from the inter-city and intra-city dimensions.The result showed that rising housing prices indeed drive up the debt balance and leverage of NFH households significantly more than those of FH households.Furthermore,our research found that a rise in housing prices has prompted NFH households to be more inclined to make the most use of mortgage policies with no substantial housing difference.To curb excessive leverage increase in the household sector,therefore,apart from regulating high expectations of housing prices,there should be stepped-up credit constraints on NFH households,thus restricting their behavior of excessive speculation.

The evolution of George Town’s urban morphology in the Straits of Malacca,late 18th century-early 21st century

George Town is a significant World Heritage Site in the Straits of Malacca.This paper examined the evolution of urban morphology in George Town within geography,politics,economy,and culture in a horizontal dimension and layer upon layer in a vertical dimension.In this study,to ensure the objectives are achieved,qualitative methods will be applied including several approaches such as literature review,interpretation of archives chronologically,maps study,census returns,trade directories,photographs and postcards,and urban master plan study.The research is based on the analysis of urban construction,land use,economic development,and municipal policies.First,study the urban morphology in a specific period,and construct the inner layer structure in each period.Second,an analogy is drawn among the evolution of the urban morphology by time-scale,this section focusses on the historical conjunctures and events related to the urban construction.An important contribution can be made to the conservation and management of urban built heritage in George Town,on the one hand,explaining the evolution of urban morphology by examining George Tow nphysical and spatial environment,and in turn,on the other hand,understanding about the physical and spatial environment by examining the urban morphology.

The True Meaning of the Lord of Heaven (Tianzhu Shiyi 天主實義)is a Chinese text of the 17th century written by the Italian sinologist and missionary Matteo Ricci. It contains, among other topics, a discussion between a Confucian scholar and a Christian about the motivation to act. For Confucianism a good action should be performed for its own sake, without any thought of future reward. For Christianity it seems that good actions are performed in order to go to Heaven. Ricci argues that human actions are complex. The ultimate motivation for goodness comes from a relation with God. The Confucian scholar claims that actually not all actions need a motive. Sometimes things 'just happen." Also, a good tradition can move people to behave properly. Dealing with topics such as soul, eternal life, causes, descendants, tradition, happiness and proper behavior, this dialogue offers a great insight of the meeting of two great traditions: Confucianism and Christianity.

Nonlinear Shock Effect of China’s Fiscal Policy on Total Factor Productivity-Based on the Dual Perspective of Aggregate and Structure

In different economic periods,if the government blindly adopts expansionary fiscal policy,it may not be able to effectively increase total factor productivity(TFP).Based on this,this paper constructs a factor augmented vector autoregressive model with time-varying parameters and stochastic volatility(SV-TVP-FAVAR),and explores the nonlinear shock effect of China’s fiscal policy on TFP from the dual perspective of aggregate and structure.The study finds that:(1)At the aggregate level,the increase in fiscal expenditure in each period has a signifi cant inhibitory effect on TFP,while the increase in fiscal revenue has a significant promotion effect on TFP;(2)At the structural level of expenditure,in the period of economic depression and high economic growth,the increase in investment expenditure,education expenditure,technology expenditure,and public service expenditure all have a strong incentive effect on TFP,but the increase in science and technology and education expenditure in the period of economic stability has not effectively improved TFP;(3)At the structural level of tax,the increase in commodity tax,including consumption tax,value-added tax,and tariff,and individual income tax will signifi cantly inhibit the increase in TFP,but the increase in corporate income tax can signifi cantly increase TFP.Therefore,under the new economic normal,policy makers should build a two-wheel driven fiscal policy of“aggregate regulation and structural optimization”to optimize the structure of fiscal expenditure and taxation,and promote high-quality economic development.

Tastes of Revolution, Change and Love： Codes of Consumption in Fiction from New China

This paper analyses Socialist Realist novels from the early years of the People＇s Republic of China （PRC）, focusing on scenes of food and drink consumption. While these scenes may appear marginal at first glance, the analysis demonstrates how food and its consumption function as codes to normative values. I am therefore proposing a reading of these texts based on the model of intertextuality （Julia Kristeva） and on an anthropological model on （food） consumption （Mary Douglas）, advocating that acts of consumption reveal social hierarchies and the position of the individual therein. These fictional scenes of everyday activities construct fictional characters as heroes or villains. Given the normative value of this officially endorsed literature, these scenes at the same time prescribe （and, likewise, proscribe） certain behavior to their readers. On another level, however, these codes also convey information that could not be openly spelled out at the time, as when the sharing of food is the only way in which two fictional characters can express their love. Simple food can thus be the source of entertainment, enjoyment, suspense, and even nostalgia for contemporary readers, which, in turn, may be one of the reasons for the lasting popularity of the codes described and of a number of the texts presented in the analysis.

Longevity,Fertility,and the Real Exchange Rate

We build a simple overlapping generation model to investigate the effect of life expectancy on the real exchange rate where fertility is chosen endogenously.The model reveals that,although the overall effect of life expectancy on the real exchange rate is not certain,longer life expectancy tends to cause the real exchange rate to depreciate by reducing fertility.Fertility thus serves as a mediator in the effect of life expectancy on the real exchange rate.Evidence from 148 economies(1980-2018)shows a statistically significant and robust negative relationship between life expectancy and the real exchange rate.It is estimated that a I year increase in life expectancy is associated with a 1.5 percent depreciation in the real exchange rate.The evidence also confirms the mediated effect of fertility.The mediated effect that fertility exerts accounts for 30 percent to 50 percent of the total effect,depending on the real exchange rate index used.

Financial reporting fraud and CEO pay-performance incentives

Because prior studies find mixed results on the relation between CEOs’pay performance incentives and a firm’s likelihood of financial reporting fraud,we restudy their relationship using innovative research methods.First,we concentrate on incentives from granting options rather than equity-based incentives.Second,we emphasize vested options,disregarding unvested option holdings,and take the logarithm transformation of option incentives.Third,we analyse the impact of option incentives on future financial reporting irregularities.Using this innovative approach as well as a full sample and a matched sample,we find that an increase in executives’option incentives raises the likelihood of financial reporting violations.Moreover,the effect of option incentives on financial reporting fraud is moderated by auditor effort.In addition,we find that another proxy for the measurement of executives’option incentives,namely,the number of vested options by executives,is highly correlated with the CEO’s vested stock option sensitivity.
