In this study, a maize SnRK2 gene ZmSnRK2.11 was cloned and characterized. The results showed that ZmSnRK2.11 is up-regulated by high-salinity and dehydration treatment, and it is expressed mainly in maize mature leaf. Atransient expression assay using onion epidermal cells revealed that ZmSnRK2.11-GFP fusion proteins are localized to both the nucleus and cytoplasm. Overexpressing-ZmSnRK2.11 in Arabidopsis resulted in salt and drought sensitivity phenotypes that exhibited an increased rate of water loss, reduced relative water content, delayed stoma closure, accumulated less free proline content and increased malondialdehyde (MDA) content relative to the phenotypes observed in wild-type (WT) control. Furthermore, overexpression of ZmSnRK2.11 up-regulated the expression of the genes ABI1 and ABI2 and decreased the expression of DREB2A and P5CSI. Taken together, our results suggest that ZmSnRK2.11 is a possible negative regulator involved in the salt and drought stress signal transduction pathways in plants.展开更多

Throughout their long evolutionary history, plants have developed a range of complicated and precise molecular regulatory mechanisms to deal with low-temperature stress, involving the activation of signal transduction pathways and the regulation of related genes. In this review, we provide a systematic summary of the most recent research findings regarding three hypotheses of cellular perception of low-temperature signals and two major intracellular low-temperature signaling pathways, including CBF-dependent signaling pathways and CBF-independent signaling pathways. Focus is placed on the functions of each component of the ICE-CBF-COR signaling cascade as well as their interrelationships. This review concludes that although some progress has been made in the identification, function, and mechanism of low-temperature response genes, their roles in the low-temperature regulatory network and molecular mechanisms still need to be studied in detail, which will be of great significance for improving the low-temperature tolerance of plants and adapting to climate change.展开更多

The dynamics of AM fungi with desert ephemerals were examined to determine the effects of host plant life stages on the development of AM fungi. Mean colonization of ephemeral annual plants was 45% lower than that of ephemeral perennial plants. The colonizations were much higher in the early part of the growing season than in later parts, peaking at flowering times. The phenology of AM fungi in root systems varied among different ephem- erals. The density of AM fungal spores increased with the development of ephemeral annual plants, reached its maximum at flowering times, and then plateaued about 20 days after the aboveground senescence. A significant positive correlation was found between AM fungi spore density and biomass of ephemeral annual plants. The life cycles of AM fungi associated with desert ephemerals were very shod, being about 60-70 days. Soil temperature and water content had no direct influence on the development of AM fungal spores. We concluded that the development of AM fungi was in response to desert ephemeral phenology and life history strategy.展开更多

PhyA and phyB have been characterized in detail, but studies on phyC to phyE have reported discrepant functions. In this study, we show that phyD regulates the Arabidopsis gravitropic response by inhibiting negative gravitropism of hypocotyls under red light condition. PhyD had only a limited effect on the gravitropic response of roots in red light condition. PhyD also enhanced phyB-regulated gravitropic responses in hypocotyls. Moreover, the regulation of hypocotyl gravitropic responses by phyD was dependent upon the red light fluence rate.展开更多

Improving maize cultivars with drought tolerance using marker-assisted selection requires a better understanding of its genetic basis. In this study, a doubled haploid(DH) population consisting of 217 lines was created by crossing the inbred lines Han 21(drought-tolerant) and Ye 478(drought-sensitive). The population was genotyped with a 6 K SNP assay and 756 SNP(single nucleotide polymorphism) markers were used to construct a linkage map with a length of 1344 c M. Grain yield(GY), ear setting percentage(ESP), and anthesis–silking interval(ASI) were recorded in seven environments under well-watered(WW) and water-stressed(WS) regimes. High phenotypic variation was observed for all traits under both water regimes. Using the LSMEAN(least-squares mean) values from all environments for each trait, 18 QTL were detected, with 9 associated with the WW and 9 with the WS regime. Four chromosome regions,Chr. 3: 219.8–223.7 Mb, Chr. 5: 191.5–194.7 Mb, Chr. 7: 132.2–135.6 Mb, and Chr. 10: 88.2–89.4 Mb, harbored at least 2 QTL in each region, and QTL co-located in a region inherited favorable alleles from the same parent. A set of 64 drought-tolerant BC_3F_6 lines showed preferential accumulation of the favorable alleles in these four regions, supporting an association between the four regions and maize drought tolerance. QTL-by-environment interaction analysis revealed 28 ed QTL(environment-dependent QTL) associated with the WS regime and 22 associated with the WW regime for GY, ESP, and ASI. All WS QTL and55.6% of WW QTL were located in the ed QTL regions. The hotspot genomic regions identified in this work will support further fine mapping and marker-assisted breeding of drought-tolerant maize.展开更多
