The transmission characteristics of the optical label switching system based on the FSK/ASK orthogonal modulation format is investigated. The factors that affect the transmission performance, such as the FSK tone space, dispersion compensation and coupler split ratio, are studied by numerical simulation. The proposed scheme is also experimentally demonstrated with a transmission of 155 Mbit/s FSK label combined with 10 Gbit/s ASK payload. 展开更多

Meanwhile, the confinement loss of the fundamental mode is engineered to achieve the single-polarization single-mode transmission. Based on this analysis, a novel design of MOFs for properties of the single-polarization single-mode and the nearly zero ultraflattened dispersion between lpskm^-1 nm^-1 in the wavelength range of 1.2-1.6μm is presented for the first time. 展开更多

Using the optimal dispersion compensation scheme, after transmitted over 160 km and 320 km SMF respectively, the label can be recovered without power penalty, while the payload can be recovered with less than 2 dB and 5 dB penalty, respectively. 展开更多

The performance is simulated and analyzed when both CS-RZ and SSB-RZ formats are used respectively in symbol overlapping fast frequency hop optical code division multiple access(SO-FFH-OCDMA) system at the transmission rate of 10 Gb/s. The simulation demonstrates that both formats are applicable in OCDMA system. For the system using either CS-RZ or SSB-RZ, Q factor degrades with the increase of transmission distance and increases with the increase of input power. Moreover, the performance of SO-FFH-OCDMA system with CS-RZ is better than that of SSP,-RZ at the same transmission distance and input power. 展开更多

A novel single-mode single-polarization (SMSP) photonic crystal fibre has been proposed and analysed based on the polarization-dependent coupling and absorption effect via a full-vector finite element method with perfectly matched layers. The numerical results predict that very efficient SMSP operation can be achieved with both high bandwidth and high extinction ratio at low loss penalty. Effects of the fibre structural parameters on the SMSP bandwidth and extinction ratio have been explored, which will provide useful guide for the design and fabrication of the fibre. The results obtained will be instructive for the realization of new SMSP fibres with high performance. 展开更多

Based on the continuum elastic theory, this paper presents a finite element analysis to investigate the influences of elastic anisotropy and thickness of spacing layer on the strain field distribution and band edges (both conduction band and valence band) of the InAs/CaAs conical shaped quantum dots. To illustrate these effects, we give detailed comparisons with the circumstances of isolated and stacking quantum dot for both anisotropic and isotropic elastic characteristics. The results show that, in realistic materials design and theoretical predication performances of the optoelectronic devices, both the elastic anisotropy and thickness of the spacing layer of stacked quantum dot should be taken into consideration. 展开更多

First-principles investigation of BAs and BxGa1-xAs alloys Using first-principles calculations in the generalized gradient approximation, the electronic properties of BAs and BxGa1-xAs alloys are studied. At the Brillouin-zone centre, the lowest conduction band is the three-degenerate p-like Г15c state rather than s-like Г1c state, and the conduction band minimum (CBM) is along the A line between the Г and X points-at approximately 11/14(1,0,0)2π/a. With boron content at 0%-18.75%, BxGa1-xAs alloys have a small (2.6 eV) and relatively composition-independent band-gap bowing parameter, the band-gap increases monotonically by -18meV/B% with increasing boron content. In addition, the formation enthalpies of mixing for BxGa1-xAs alloys with boron content at 6.25% and 12.5% are calculated, and the large formation enthalpies may explain the difficulty in alloying boron to GaAs. 展开更多

Calculations of electronic structures about the semiconductor quantum dot and the semiconductor quantum ring are presented in this paper. To reduce the calculation costs, for the quantum dot and the quantum ring, their simplified axially symmetric shapes are utilized in our analysis. The energy dependent effective mass is taken into account in solving the Schrodinger equations in the single band effective mass approximation. The calculated results show that the energy dependent effective mass should be considered only for relatively small volume quantum dots or small quantum rings. For large size quantum materials, both the energy dependent effective mass and the parabolic effective mass can give the same results. The energy states and the effective masses of the quantum dot and the quantum ring as a function of geometric parameters are also discussed in detail. 展开更多

We take an enhanced structure of existing optical fibres to investigate the amplification characteristics. Nano and optical fibre technologies both are employed in our structure, i.e. the so-called nano-film amplification fibre where nano-film is inserted between the core and the inner cladding of the optical fibre. In the developed model, InP is chosen as a doped semiconductor to examine its amplification performance and 69.7nm is chosen as the thickness of the film. From our experimental results, the optical fibre structure shows its significant amplification characteristics for wavelength between 1080nm and 1491 nm. Amplification characteristics are also found in wavelengths 906-1044 nm and 1524-1596nm. 展开更多

A bilinear Baecklund transformation is presented for the three coupled higher-order nonlinear Schroedinger equations with the inclusion of the group velocity dispersion, third-order dispersion and Kerr-law nonlinearity, which can describe the dynamics of alpha helical proteins in living systems as well as the propagation of ultrashort pulses in wavelength-division multiplexed system. Starting from the Baecklund transformation, the analytical soliton solution is obtained from a trivial solution. Simultaneously, the N-soliton-like solution in double Wronskian form is constructed, and the corresponding proof is also given via the Wronskian technique. The results obtained from this paper might be valuable in studying the transfer of energy in biophysics and the transmission of light pulses in optical communication systems. 展开更多

A systematic investigation about the strain distributions around the InAs/GaAs quantum dots using the finite element method is presented. A special attention is paid to influence of an Ino.2 Gao.sAs strain reducing layer. The numerical results show that the horizontal- and vertical-strain components and the biaz^ial strain are reinforced in the InAs quantum dot due to the strain-reducing layer. However, the hydrostatic strain in the quantum dot is reduced. In the framework of eight-band k · p theory, we study the band edge modifications due to the presence of a strain reducing layer. The results demonstrate that the strain reducing layer yields the decreasing band gap, i.e., the redshift phenomenon is observed in experiments. Our calculated results show that degree of the redshift will increase with the increasing thickness of the strain-reducing layer. The calculated results can explain the experimental results in the literature, and further confirm that the long wavelength emission used for optical fibre communication is realizable by adjusting the dependent parameters. However, based on the calculated electronic and heavy-hole wave function distributions, we find that the intensity of photoluminescence will exhibits some variations with the increasing thickness of the strain-reducing layer. 展开更多

We present a systematic scheme to achieve both high birefringence and low confinement loss in index-guiding photonic crystal fibers(PCFs) ,using a structurally-simple PCF with finite number of air holes in the cladding region. By increasing the size of the outermost-ring air holes in the cladding region,highly birefringent PCFs with low confinement loss can be successfully achieved. The design strategy is based on the fact that the modal birefringence of PCFs is dominated by the inner-ring air holes in PCF,which is verified by a full-vector finite element method with anisotropic perfectly matched layers. Numerical results show that modal birefringence in the order of 10-3 and confinement loss less than 0.1 dB/km can be easily realized in the proposed PCF with only four rings of air holes in the cladding region. We expect that such fibers will be much easier to be fabvicated than those with more air holes in the cladding region. 展开更多

We investigate the electronic structures of new semiconductor alloys BxGa1-xAs and TlxGa1-xAs, employing first-principles calculations within the density-functional theory and the generalized gradient approximation. The calculation results indicate that alloying a small TI content with GaAs will produce larger modifications of the band structures compared to B. A careful investigation of the internal lattice structure relaxation shows that significant bond-length relaxations takes place in both the alloys, and it turns out that difference between the band-gap bowing behaviours for B and TI stems from the different impact of atomic relaxation on the electronic structure. The relaxed structure yields electronic-structure results, which are in good agreement with the experimental data. Finally, a comparison of formation enthalpies indicates that the production Tlx Ga1-xAs with TI concentration of at least 8% is possible. 展开更多

Certain constraints are worked out, which make sure the integrability of such an equation. Under those constraints, some integrable properties are derived, such as the Lax pair and Darboux transformation. Via the Darboux transformation, which is an exercisable way to generate solutions in a recursive manner, the one- and two-solitonic solutions are presented and the relevant physical applications of these solitonic structures in some fields are also pointed out. 展开更多

Based on the bilinear form, we obtain the Wronskian determinant solution, which is proved to be indeed an exact solution of this equation through the Wronskian technique.
