Biodiesel was first synthesised at laboratory scale in order to optimize the transesterification parameters. The cost of the final product was also optimized using low-cost raw materials. The UFO and the produced biodiesel were characterized with several techniques including gas chromatography,1H NMR,13 C NMR, FTIR, and TGA–TDA techniques.1H NMR gas chromatographic analyses of the final product confirmed that the transesterification in the chosen experimental conditions was completed. These results were confirmed by TGA–TDA analysis used as new techniques to monitoring triglyceride conversion. The biodiesel did not contain any trace of glycerol, and it did meet the international standards. The transesterification at low cost in small scale conditions was performed at 60 ℃ using 1.2% of KOH and a methanol/oil molar ratio of 6:1. A yield of 80.8% was achieved. The properties of the produced biodiesel were found to be as good as those of biodiesels obeying to European standards. The biodiesel production was also performed at small-scale for individual utilisation. Thus, the product was tested in a kerosene stove for heating and non-modified commercial diesel engine producing electricity.展开更多

Insulin effects on different cell types were investigated, and we intended to check its effect on dental pulp cells (DPC) during osteoblast differentiation. First, bone differentiation ability of isolated dental pulp cells was assessed by alizarin red (AR) staining. Insulin increased dental pulp cell proliferation after 25 hours of culture. It increased mRNA expression of osteogenic markers such as Col1, RunX2, ALP, Osc, Mef2C and expression of genes involved in TGF b pathway such as Smad3, TSP1, VEGF at different time points.展开更多

Its symptoms include blurry vision, foreign body sensation, pain, grittiness, ocular dryness and discomfort. Multiple studies have revealed that DED has a negative impact on patients’ quality of life, as well as their physical and mental health. In line with such findings, other research projects have indicated that depression, anxiety and stress share common risk factors associated with DED. Objective: We aimed to investigate the association between DED and depression, anxiety and stress among Saudi Arabian adults. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study conducted on 335 Saudi Arabian patients aimed to assess the prevalence of DED among individuals with depression, anxiety and stress. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire with the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales-21 (DASS-21) to assess the severity of stress, depression and anxiety, and the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) to assess DED symptoms. Results: The final number of participants was 448. Furthermore, 72.3% of them were aged 18 - 30 years, and 69.6% of them were females. The prevalence of depression, anxiety, and stress among patients with DED was 62.1%, 66.1%, 54%, and 77.9% respectively. Furthermore, we found that there were no significant differences between participants regarding the severity of DED based on different age groups (P = 0.889). Females with depression, anxiety, and stress, on the other hand, were significantly more likely to have severe DED than males with similar conditions. Conclusions: We confirmed a high prevalence of depression, anxiety, stress and DED in Saudi Arabian patients. There was a significant correlation between the four studied variables in which the greatest correlation was between anxiety and DED.展开更多

This paper outlines the steps for validating a biological method of analysis. It involves the construction of an experimental design, a statistical model, and the preparation of an interne laboratory reference material (pilot vaccine). The latter is used to study the impact of deviation and variation factors, in order to, optimize the analytical method, to evaluate the bias (random error), and to calculate the uncertainty of measurement, and make the control charts. This method is applied in the titration of live viral vaccines of Gumboro disease on chicken's embryos fibroblasts. The experimental results show that potential influence factors related to the titration method had no significant influence on the obtained results. Taking into account these results, an operating mode has been elaborated. The finalized method proved to be faithful to standard deviation of repeatability and reproducibility of 0.21 and 0.22, respectively, with a confidence level of 95%. The calculated uncertainty of measurement is equal to 0.2, which represents the average error level of a titer. A homogeneous stock of interne laboratory reference vaccine (MRIL), with an average titer of 5.9 log DIT 50, was produced and the control chart set in away to provide the laboratory with an important tool of control and monitoring of the viral titers evolution in time, as well as, the mastery of the validated titration method performances.展开更多

The time of flight and the peak to peak amplitude of the ultrasonic signals backscattered by fish are recorded during thawing. The comparison of the evolution curves and images corresponding to first and second thawing shows indicators of accidental thawing. The monitoring of thawing process showed that its assessment can be reduced to the measurement of the water content lost by fish. The attempt to replace the original water lost by fish in first thawing is analyzed. The influence of the transducer frequency on fish thawing evaluation is tested.展开更多

In the present study, nine cultivars of citrumelo (Citrus paradisi Macf. x Poncirus trifoliata (L.) Raf.) were evaluated for salt tolerance. Two month-old seedlings were raised under greenhouse conditions and irrigated with a half strength Hoagland solution supplemented with different concentrations of NaCI, i.e., 0 mM, 35 mM and 85 mM. Tolerance was assessed after two months of stress by measuring stem growth, number of leaves, fresh and dry weight organs and leaf water, chlorophyll and chloride contents. A differential behavior was noticed among the seedlings we studied. When using increased concentration of salt in irrigation water, all the parameters were significantly reduced except for leaf chloride content which highly increased in response to stress. At 85 mM, the cultivar SC2 showed a high tolerance resulting in less apparent leaf symptoms, higher growth and higher leaf chlorophyll content when compared to other seedlings. Similarly, the cultivar C4475-C was shown to be a strong root chloride excluder with less than 2.6% DW (dry weight) chloride accumulation at leaf level. By contrast, our results suggest that C4475-A and C4475-B are salt sensitive cultivars regarding to all the parameters studied while the other citrumelos were considered as moderately tolerant.展开更多

This overweight could be exacerbated by fat intake. Thus, this study was planned to evaluate the impact of the consumption of olive and argane oils on anthropometric profile and body composition of postmenopausal women. The nutritional intervention was conducted over a period of eight weeks, involving daily consumption of 25 mL of argane oil The anthropometric profile (weight, height and body mass index or olive oil in 151 postmenopausal women (55.49 ± 6.18 years old). (BMI)) and body composition (fat mass (FM) and lean mass (LM)) were determined at 0 week (baseline), and after the 4th and 8th weeks of nutritional intervention. Results clearly demonstrated that argane oil or olive oil consumption did not affect the anthropometric parameters and the body composition of postmenopausal women. Thus, argane and/or olive oils' regular diet does not lead to weight gain, and postmenopausal women could benefit from their impact on health for a better quality of life and to overcome all menopause associated problems. A longer period of nutritional intervention is required to confirm the trend down that was recorded.展开更多

This led to the fabrication of hierarchically composite electrodes consisting of porous and nanostructured VN grown on vertically aligned CNTs in a nano-treelike configuration for micro-supercapacitor application. The electrodes show excellent performance with an areal capacitance as high as 37.5 mF cm^-2 at a scan rate of 2 mV s^-1 in a 0.5 M K2504 mild electrolyte solution. Furthermore, the capacitance decay was only 15% after 20,000 consecutive cycles. Moreover, the capacitance was found to increase with VN deposit thickness. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses of the electrodes before and after cycling suggest that the oxide layers that form at the VN surface is the responsible for the redox energy storage in this material. Such electrodes can compete with other transition metal nitride based electrodes for micro-supercapacitors.展开更多

The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses of the electrodes before and after cycling suggest that the oxide layers that form at the VN surface is the responsible for the redox energy storage in this material. Such electrodes can compete with other transition metal nitride based electrodes for micro-supercapacitors.
