We provide more detailed morphologic characteristics of arm skeleton and a phylogenetic analysis based on CO 1 sequences. Both morphology and phylogeny results suggest that the genus Ophioleila is more closely related to Ophiactids than Hemieuryalids.展开更多

The Eocene–Oligocene Southern Ocean is thought to have played a major role in cetacean evolution.Yet,fossils from its heart—Antarctica—are rare,and come almost exclusively from the Eocene La Meseta and Submeseta fo...The Eocene–Oligocene Southern Ocean is thought to have played a major role in cetacean evolution.Yet,fossils from its heart—Antarctica—are rare,and come almost exclusively from the Eocene La Meseta and Submeseta formations of Marambio(Seymour)Island.Here,we provide a summary and update of this crucial fossil assemblage,and discuss its relevance in the broader context of cetacean evolution.To date,Eocene specimens from Antarctica include basilosaurids,a group of archaic stem cetaceans that had already fully adapted to life in water;and the archaic toothed mysticete Llanocetus,the second oldest crown cetacean on record(ca.34 Ma).This Eocene co-occurrence of stem and crown cetaceans is highly unusual,and otherwise only observed in Peru.Though related,at least some of the Antarctic species appear to be different from,and notably larger than their Peruvian counterparts,suggesting an early differentiation of the high latitude cetacean fauna.展开更多
A diverse sessile barnacle fauna from a Miocene shallow-water deposit at Dolnja Stara vas in Slovenia is described.It includes the first descriptions of early post settlement juveniles of Actinobalanus sloveniensis at...A diverse sessile barnacle fauna from a Miocene shallow-water deposit at Dolnja Stara vas in Slovenia is described.It includes the first descriptions of early post settlement juveniles of Actinobalanus sloveniensis attached to mangrove leaves.These represent three distinct growth phases,the earliest being interpreted as being less than 24 h post settlement,the others being 1 to 2 days post settlement.An assessment of their taphonomy is provided.Associated adult balanomorphs are attached to a variety of organic substrates,including mangrove leaves and branches,fragments of the conifers?Taxodioxylon,Carapoxylon,pine cones,molluscs,and cetacean bones.The barnacles include A.sloveniensis,Amphibalanus venustus,and Perforatus perforatus—many with opercula retained within the shells.A.venustus retains some of the original shell color.This is the second record of barnacle–plant associations from the Central Paratethys from Kamnik and Trbovlje.The paleoecology and paleogeography of the site are discussed.展开更多

Diversification in sexual signals is often taken as evidenee for the importance of sexual selection in speciatio n.However,in order for sexual selection to gen erate reproductive isolati on between populations,both si...Diversification in sexual signals is often taken as evidenee for the importance of sexual selection in speciatio n.However,in order for sexual selection to gen erate reproductive isolati on between populations,both signals and mate preferences must diverge together.Furthermore,assortative mating may result from multiple behavioral mecha nisms,in eluding female mate pref ere nces,male mate preferences,and male-male competition;yet their relative contributions are rarely evaluated.Here,we explored the role of mate pref ere nces and male competitive ability as pote ntial barriers to gene flow between 2 diverge nt lineages of the taw ny dragon lizard,Ctenophorus decresii,which differ in male throat coloration.We found stronger behavioral barriers to pairings between southern lineage males and northern lineage females than between northern males and southern females,indicating incomplete and asymmetric behavioral isolating barriers.These results were driven by both male and female mate preferences rather than lineage differences in male competitive ability.In trasexual selecti on is therefore un likely to drive the outcome of sec on dary contact in C.decresii,despite its widely ack no wledged importa nee in lizards.Our results are consiste nt with the emergi ng view that although both male and female mate pref ere nces can diverge alongside sexual signals,speciation is rarely driven by divergent sexual selection alone.展开更多
