Influence of aliphatic epoxy monomer on the blowing-out effect in the flame retardant epoxy resins

An aliphatic epoxy monomer"polypropyleneglycol-diglycidylether(PPGDGE,YF878)"is loaded in the epoxy resins(EP)to evaluate the influence of epoxy structure on the blowing-out effect,which is caused by 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide(DOPO)and octaphenyl silsesquioxane(OPS).The flame retarding properties of these EP composites were tested using the LOI and UL-94 procedures.The pyrolytic gases produced and the thermal stability of the EP composites with different flame retardants were detected by TGA-FTIR in air.The negative effect of YF878 was detected from the TTI,HRR,and p-HRR results after the cone calorimeter test.The char produced by the EP composites after the cone calorimeter test was investigated by FTIR.It is proposed that the aliphatic chain of the YF878 is easy to break down and produce combustible gases,so it does not easily form a crosslinked structure in the condensed phase.These results are very helpful for investigation of the conditions under which the blowing-out effect in epoxy resins can be caused by synergy of phosphorous and silicon. 展开更多

High-performance flame-retardant polylactic acid(PLA)bio-composites based on biobased fillers to meet usage requirements represents a promising direction for creating a sustainable world.Although flame retardant PLA composites have been reported extensively,it still remains a huge challenge to develop mechanically robust.The flame retardant PLA composites due to plastication effect of organic flame retardants and poor compatibility of organic fillers with the matrix lead to the severe deterioration in mechanical properties.In this work,a bio-inspired surface manipulation strategy for halloysite nanotubes(HNTs)was proposed via a facile and green self-assembly process.The structure and morphology of bio-inspired HNTs(b-HNTs)proved that biomass nanofillers(PA-NA-Fe)grew well both within the lumen and on the surface of HNTs.The growth of biomass on the inner and outer surfaces of HNTs was inspired from wooden towards enhancing the interface compatibility and imparting multi-properties to PLA biopolymer.Excellent mechanical properties(tensile,thermomechanical and anti-impact mechanical),great fire safety(heat release and smoke emission),thermostability and improved electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness of this well-designed PLA nanocomposite were realized.The mechanisms of the enhanced performances of the PLA bio-composites by loading b-HNTs were proposed.This work presents a facile and environmentally-friendly bio-inspired modification strategy for HNTs to fabricate high-performance,multi-functional polymer composites,which is also suitable for surface modification of many other nanomaterials,including nanofibers,nanotubes,nanowires,and nanosheets. 展开更多

The(EDTA)^(4-)organic substituents were supplemented with alkaline silicates electrolyte,however in varying concentration to explore the microstructure,chemical composition and subsequent effects on the biodegradation of the PEO coated Mg AZ91 alloy.From surface analysis-,carried out through SEM,samples with zero-(EDTA)^(4-)were found-,lacking pancake structural features;however,supplementing electrolyte with(EDTA)^(4-),bulky and layered pancakes were obtained with minimum cracks and minimum porosity for EDT-1.From the phase and inner layer analysis,it was found that EDTA can significantly alter the surface layers composition and could act as a passivation agent-;however,individual polycrystalline phases were not found to form.The hardness value obtained for EDT-1 was~909.69 HV,the highest value found here which occurs with the shallowest indents found in this study.In-vitro degradation analysis was carried out using potentiodynamic polarization at room temperature,cyclic polarization at RT and high fever conditions(HFT~40°C).The corrosion potential for coated AZ91 was obtained as a positive value of~0.1 V,for the first time in the PEO research;however,the results were not supported by the cyclic polarization tests at room temperature and at HFT.The post corrosion microstructural analysis confirmed the effective role of EDTA up to 1.0 g·L^(-1)and revealed the formation of thin films during the forward polarization at HFT. 展开更多

Crystallization, Mechanical and Flame-retardant Properties of Poly(lactic acid) Composites with DOPO and DOPO-POSS 被引量:10

Poly(lactic acid)(PLA) composites with 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide(DOPO) and DOPOcontaining polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane(DOPO-POSS) were prepared via melting extrusion and injection molding. The crystallization, mechanical, and flame-retardant properties of PLA/DOPO and PLA/DOPO-POSS were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry(DSC), X-ray diffraction(XRD), tensile testing, thermogravimetric analysis(TGA), limiting oxygen index(LOI),and cone calorimeter test. The DSC results showed that the DOPO added could act as a plasticizer as reflected by lower glass transition temperature and inhibited crystallization of part of the PLA; the DOPO-POSS acted like a filler in the PLA matrix and slightly improved the crystallinity of the PLA matrix. The XRD and DSC analyses indicated that the PLA composites by cold molding injection were amorphous, and the PLA composites following a heat treatment in an oven at 120 °C for 30 min achieved crystallinity. All the PLA and its composites after heat treatment had improved mechanical properties. The thermogravimetric analysis(TGA) tests showed that the PLA,DOPO and DOPO-POSS decomposed separately in the PLA/DOPO and PLA/DOPO-POSS, respectively. The cone calorimeter tests offered clear evidence that addition of the DOPO-POSS resulted in an evident reduction of 25% for the peak of heat release rate(p-HRR).It was also confirmed that the crystalline flame-retardant PLA composites after heat treatment had better flame retardant properties than the amorphous PLA composites prepared by the cold molding. 展开更多

Polystyrene(PS)/triphenyl phosphate(TPP) composites were prepared by both suspension polymerization and melt extrusion, and a comparative study of the flame retardance and mechanical properties was carried out. The results showed that suspension polymerization was a better technique than melt extrusion for obtaining good dispersity of the PS/TPP composite. The TPP nanoparticles, which were approximately 50 nm in size, were homogenously and uniformly dispersed in the PS matrix by suspension polymerization in one-step. However, the PS/TPP composite was partially agglomerated, exhibiting irregularly shaped micron-scale particles as a result of melt extrusion. In contrast to the melt extrusion, the limited oxygen index(LOI) of the PS/TPP nanocomposite by suspension polymerization increased to 22.6% from 21.8%, and time to ignition(TTI) increased by 12.3%, the peak heat release rate(PHRR) decreased by 8.5%, and the total heat release(THR) decreased by 11.0%. The mechanical properties of the PS/TPP nanocomposite by suspension polymerization also increased. The tensile strength, elongation at break, and flexural strength increased by 36.4%, 8.5%, and 108%, respectively. 展开更多

A comprehensive study on the efficient one-pot synthesis of polyhedral octaphenylsilsesquioxane (OPS) is reported via the hydrolytic condensation of phenyltrimethoxysilane (PTMS) in the presence of basic catalyst to investigate the specific synthesis mechanism.The synthetic reactions are monitored with real time infrared (RTIR) spectroscopy.Then RTIR coupled with 29Si nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS) are used to monitor the reactions and identify the intermediary species during the reaction.The rapid hydrolysis of PTMS is detected by RTIR.Contrary to previous reports,the ladder-like structured species are identified as intermediates during the reaction process.it is suggested that formation of caged T8OPS is realized through the chain break and rearrangement of the ladder-like phenyltrimethoxysilanes.Accordingly,a scheme from hydrolysis of the PTMS to formation of the OPS is provided. 展开更多
