This paper reports recent research studying the distribution and fate of organochlorine pesticides in the Jiulong River, the Minjiang River and the Pearl River estuaries in Southeast China. Eighteen organochlorine pesticides were extracted from water, pore water and sediment samples, followed by analysis by GC ECD. The results showed that the contamination levels were similar in these three estuaries. The levels of the total organochlorine pesticides in porewater were significantly higher than those in surface water, due to the high affinity of these hydrophobic compounds for sediment phase. Among the hexachlorocyclohexane(HCH) compounds, β HCH was found to be the most important isomer. The analysis of 1,1,1 trichloro 2,2 bis chlorophenyl ethane(DDT) and its metabolites showed that 1,1 dichloro 2[ o chlorophenyl] 2[ p chlorophenyl] ethylene(DDE) was dominant in the group.展开更多

Photolysis of P...The photolysis of 16 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) (including mono- through deca-chlorinated) in n-hexane was investigated under ultraviolet irradiation using a 500-W high-pressure mercury lamp. Photolysis of PCBs follows pseudo-first-order reaction kinetics, with photolysis rate constants ranging between 0.0011 s^-1 for PCB-52 and 0.0574 s^-1 for PCB-118. The degradation rates of PCBs by high-pressure mercury lamp irradiation were remarkably independent with respect to the degree of chlorination. Furthermore, partial least squares (PLS) models were developed to provide insight into which aspect of the molecular structure influenced PCB photolysis rate constants. It was found that the photolysis rates of PCBs increased with an increase in the net charge on the carbon atom (qc), (ELUMO-EHOMO)^2, and the Y-axis dipole moment (μy) values, or the decrease in the energy of the second highest occupied molecular orbital (EHOMO-1), energy of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (ELUMO), ELUMO + EHOMO, ELUMO - EHOMO, most positive atomic charge (q^+), and the twist angle of the chlorine atom (TA) values.展开更多
A new analytical method utilizing ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) has been developed to determine 16 pharmaceuticals from 8 therapeutic classes in wastewater: bezafibrat...A new analytical method utilizing ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) has been developed to determine 16 pharmaceuticals from 8 therapeutic classes in wastewater: bezafibrate, clofibric acid, carbamazepine, caffeine, chloramphenicol, diclofenac, gemfibrozil, indomethacin, ketoprofen, mefenamic acid, metoprolol, nalidixic acid, N,N-diethyl-metatoluamide, propranolol, sulpiride and trimethoprim. Key parameters of MS/MS, UPLC and solid phase extraction (SPE) were optimized. In general, recovery of target pharmaceuticals was over 70% for the wastewater effluent samples and 50% for the influent samples. The effects of matrix suppression, loss during the pretreatment as well as instrument variability were successfully corrected by two internal standards, and acceptable relative recovery was obtained. Target compounds were quantitatively analyzed using multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode, and the detection limits ranged from 0.3 to 20 ng/L. A detailed study, matrix effect in effluent wastewater was also present. The method was applied to detecting pharmaceuticals in the wastewater from three wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Beijing, China and the results demonstrated that most target compounds were detectable in both the influent and effluent, with the mean concentrations ranging from 20.5 to 5775.6 ng/L and 4.6 to 418.6 ng/L, respectively.展开更多

The parameters of accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) were optimized. C...An analytical method has been developed to determine bisphenol A and five degradation products of al-kylphenol ethoxylates in sewage and sludge. The parameters of accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) were optimized. C18 cartridge was used to clean up the sewage and the extract of sludge. The sensitivity of the mass detector was improved by adjusting the voltage of the lens manually. The instrumental detection limit was 3.2―17.8 pg. The method detection limits were 2.5―11.4 ng/L and 0.3―2.1 ng/g for sewage and sludge analysis respectively. The recovery and relative standard deviation for sewage analysis were 79.2%―111.4% and 6.9%―12.6%; for sludge analysis were 68.5%―114.0% and 8.9%―16.0%. Finally this method was applied to determin-ing the phenolic endocrine disrupting chemicals in sewage and sludge from a sewage treatment plant in Beijing.展开更多
One active and two passive air sampling configurations were deployed simultaneously in three offices in Beijing,China to test their comparability for sampling emerging and legacy halogenated flame retardants spanning ...One active and two passive air sampling configurations were deployed simultaneously in three offices in Beijing,China to test their comparability for sampling emerging and legacy halogenated flame retardants spanning a large range of octanoleair partition coefficients(KOA).Sampling in each office was carried out for three consecutive 28-day periods in the spring-summer of 2013.The active sampler was run for 2.5 h at different times every day for 28 days to parallel the passive samplers and sample a total volume comparable to that sampled by the passive samplers(~20 m^3).At the end of each 28-day sampling period,a separate active air sample was taken by running the sampler pump continuously for about 2.5 days.The comparability of measured concentrations varied between the air sampling configurations and for different compounds.The predominant compound measured in nearly all samples was BDE-209,a compound known to have heavy use in China.Several emerging flame retardants were also detected including DBE-DBCH,PBT,HBB,DDC-CO,and DBDPE.Very little of the tetra-hexabrominated BDEs associated with the technical PentaBDE product was observed.展开更多
