While there are a number of Qur'anic verses that speak of humanity's creation and mission, the one that speaks most clearly of the telos of that creation is Al-Dhariyat 56, which reads, "I have not created jinn and mankind except to serve me." A summary examination of some of the prominent Qur'anic commentators and their interpretation of the verse give insight into the understanding of the telos of humanity's creation according to the Qur'an. The examination of the commentaries reveals certain recurring themes.
