In this study we explore the relationship between literature and comics,through the transcription of a literary text into comics,and we examine the contribution of a preceded intervention-familiarization with comics t...In this study we explore the relationship between literature and comics,through the transcription of a literary text into comics,and we examine the contribution of a preceded intervention-familiarization with comics to the students’comics by drawing by hand and by creating them in the Cartoon Story Maker digital environment,aiming at comparing and evaluating the potential of the two media.Literature review reveals that the majority of the educational studies referring to the use of comics in education and the creation of digital comics by students,sets objectives,mainly adjusted to the teaching subject or even to pedagogical issues.On the other hand,they completely bypass the theoretical agenda of comic books and do not ensure a more substantial acquaintance with the comic book itself and the conventions or the meaning making mechanisms of the medium.Thus,we decided to conduct this study in order to fill the gap in the existing literature.According to the findings,the preceding teaching intervention had been constructive but the digital tool’s technical restrictions prohibited the full making use of the acquired knowledge concerning the language of comics.The hand-made comics were more imaginative and detailed in certain statistically significant factors.Regarding the relationship between the literary text and comics,the students adapted the literary language to the media specifications,remaining in both cases,mostly faithful to the main structure of the text.展开更多

Given the impact that institutional care has been found to have on psychological and cognitive outcomes,the authors make the case for the adaptation of Early Childhood Child Care HOME (EC-CC-HOME) a world-renowned instrument that assesses children’s child-care environment. In this instance,we have adapted the child-care version of HOME to assess the physical and organisations aspects of the residential environment,following the permission and through collaboration with the developer. This brief report presents some of the preliminary evidence of the first step undertaken towards the full adaptation of EC-CC-HOME in Greek and for use in institutional environments;participants were 29 children residing in such environments. Preliminary results on the psychometric characteristics of the measure,especially in relation to the learning aspect of the environment presented here,hold promise. This is an especially important first indication of how the measure works in view of the imminent adaptation of the scale to be used with institutional environments where children can benefit greatly from such a measure. Issues in relation to good practices in providing evidence for the psychometric characteristics of measures are briefly discussed as part of this investigation.展开更多
This study aimed to evaluate the effect of horizontal elements and building orientation on indoor particulate matter with a diameter of less than 2.5 mm(PM_(2.5))concentration and airflow.We added horizontal elements ...This study aimed to evaluate the effect of horizontal elements and building orientation on indoor particulate matter with a diameter of less than 2.5 mm(PM_(2.5))concentration and airflow.We added horizontal elements to the envelope of a standard Thai school building using computational fluid dynamics for testing the dispersion and concentration of PM_(2.5)in classrooms under the PM_(2.5)crisis condition in Chiang Mai Province.The results showed that the building orientation and the addition of horizontal elements to the front wall of the school building had different effects on the concentration of PM_(2.5)and airflow within the classroom in eight directions.Classrooms in standard school buildings facing NE and SW directions had the highest indoor PM_(2.5)concentrations,and those facing NW and SW had the least compared to all directions.Adding horizontal elements on the front wall of the standard school building was found to reduce the PM_(2.5)concentration in the classrooms of the building facing the N,NE,E,and SE directions.Increasing the horizontal element width from 1 m to 2 m reduced the PM_(2.5)concentration in classrooms of the N-and SE-facing buildings but had little effect in the classrooms of the NE-and E-facing buildings.This study will provide insight into the optimization of air quality in school buildings,informing the decision-making for adding horizontal elements and controlling their widths.展开更多
Based on the liquid-drop model and using the first derivative of the normalized Gaussian function to consider the shell correction,a simpleα-decay energy formula is proposed for heavy and superheavy nuclei.The values...Based on the liquid-drop model and using the first derivative of the normalized Gaussian function to consider the shell correction,a simpleα-decay energy formula is proposed for heavy and superheavy nuclei.The values of corresponding adjustable parameters are obtained by fittingα-decay energies of 209 nuclei ranging from Z=90 to Z=118 with N≥140.The calculated results are in good agreement with the experimental data.The average and standard deviations between the experimental data and theoretical results are 0.141 and 0.190 Me V,respectively.For comparison,the reliable formulae proposed by Dong T K et al(2010,Phys.Rev.C 82,034320),Dong J M et al(2010,Phys.Rev.C 81,064309)and the WS3+nuclear mass model proposed by Wang N et al(2011,Phys.Rev.C 84,051303)are also used.The results indicate that our improved 7-parameter formula is superior to these empirical formulae and is largely consistent with the WS3+nuclear mass model.In addition,we extend this formula to predict theα-decay energies for nuclei with Z=117,118,119 and 120.The predicted results of these formulae are basically consistent.展开更多

The photocarriers’ trapping and de...The broadband photochromic effect on undoped and rare-earth-doped lead lanthanum zirconate titanate(PLZT) ceramics was studied under the illumination of ultraviolet light at 360 nm. The photocarriers’ trapping and detrapping processes of thermal disconnected traps played the vital role in both darkening and bleaching processes. The interaction between photocarrier traps and rare-earth ion energy levels was demonstrated, which influenced the photochromatic darkening performance greatly. The transformation of photoluminescence spectra in Er3+-doped PLZT ceramics also improved the physical picture of the trap’s distribution of the materials.This work could be used to modulate the photoluminescence and lasing behavior.展开更多

In this paper, an extension of zero-inflated Poisson mixed regression models is presented for dealing with multilevel data set, referred as hierarchical mixture zero-inflated Poisson mixed regression models. A stochastic EM algorithm is developed for obtaining the ML estimates of interested parameters and a model comparison is also considered for comparing models with different latent classes through BIC criterion. An application to the analysis of count data from a Shanghai Adolescence Fitness Survey and a simulation study illustrate the usefulness and effectiveness of our methodologies.展开更多
