This study aims to provide the basic knowledge for furnace refractory design by investigating refractory property changes occurred in a hydrogen atmosphere.Since refractory bricks are thermodynamically stable in a hydrogen atmosphere at 1100°C,we tried to find out the minute changes.In this experiment,a refractory brick was prepared by andalusite,mullite chamotte,and clay as raw materials and heated to 1100°C in a 100%hydrogen atmosphere for 72 h.It was found that the strength of the brick was decreased and the color was changed to black by the reduction of impurities.And in addition,this study covered research on the slaking risk of MgO raw materials because the minimum temperature is expected to 400°C in fluidized reduction furnaces unlike shaft furnaces. 展开更多

Refractory materials,as the crucial foundational materials in high-temperature industrial processes such as metallurgy and construction,are inevitably subjected to corrosion and penetration from high-temperature media during their service.Traditionally,observing the in-situ degradation process of refractory materials in complex high-temperature environments has presented challenges.Post-corrosion analysis are commonly employed to assess the slag resistance of refractory materials and understand the corrosion mechanisms.However,these methods often lack information on the process under the conditions of thermal-chemical-mechanical coupling,leading to potential biases in the analysis results.In this work,we developed a non-contact high-temperature machine vision technology by the integrating Digital Image Correlation(DIC)with a high-temperature visualization system to explore the corrosion behavior of Al2O3-SiO2 refractories against molten glass and Al2O3-MgO dry ramming refractories against molten slag at different temperatures.This technology enables realtime monitoring of the 2D or 3D overall strain and average strain curves of the refractory materials and provides continuous feedback on the progressive corrosion of the materials under the coupling conditions of thermal,chemical,and mechanical factors.Therefore,it is an innovative approach for evaluating the service behavior and performance of refractory materials,and is expected to promote the digitization and intelligence of the refractory industry,contributing to the optimization and upgrading of product performance. 展开更多

The interfacial reactions of Cr2O3- Al2O3 refractory materials with smelting reduction ironmaking slag were investigated by thermodynamic modeling. The calculation results indicated that different spinel phases were produced after the interactions between the slag and three types of refractory materials( 10Cr2O3- 90Al2O3,50Cr2O3- 50Al2O3 and 90Cr2O3- 10Al2O3) at 1 500℃. Increased contents of Al2O3 and Cr2O3in the remained liquid slag after interaction implied the dissolution of refractory. Thermodynamic modeling predicted that the process of dissolution might lead to much deeper penetration into the refractory materials by the present compositional slag. Accordingly,corrosion testing was also conducted to validate the thermodynamic prediction. 展开更多

The application of coal-based reduction in the efficient recovery of iron from refractory iron-bearing resources is comprehensively reviewed.Currently,the development and beneficiation of refractory iron-bearing resources have attracted increasing attention.However,the effect of iron recovery by traditional beneficiation methods is unacceptable.Coal-based reduction followed by magnetic separation is proposed,which adopts coal as the reductant to reduce iron oxides to metallic iron below the melting temperature.The metallic iron particles aggregate and grow,and the particle size continuously increases to be suitable for magnetic separation.The optimization and application of coal-based reduction have been abundantly researched.A detailed literature study on coal-based reduction is performed from the perspectives of thermodynamics,reduction kinetics,growth of metallic iron particles,additives,and application.The coal-based reduction industrial equipment can be developed based on the existing pyrometallurgical equipments,rotary hearth furnace and rotary kiln,which are introduced briefly.However,coal-based reduction currently mainly adopts coal as a reductant and fuel,which may result in high levels of carbon dioxide emissions,energy consumption,and pollution.Technological innovation aiming at decreasing carbon dioxide emissions is a new trend of green and sustainable development of the steel industry.Therefore,the substitution of coal with clean energy(hydrogen,biomass,etc.)for iron oxide reduction shows promise in the future. 展开更多

To solve the problem of over-high density of lightweight insulation refractory bricks prepared with fly ash, new lightweight insulation refractory materials with density 〈 0. 89 g · cm^-3 were .synthesized using pyrophyl-lite, .fly ash, and Suzhou clay as the main starting materials and saw dast as the pore forming substance, and controlling the addition of the pyrophyllite (20%, 30% , and 40% by mass ) and the treating temperature (1 250, 1 300, 1 350, and 1 400 ℃ ). The synthesized materials were characterized by the XRD, SEM and the thermal conductivity measuring in.strument. The results show at pyrophyllite addition of 30% and treat temperature of l 400 ℃ , the material can achieve linear shrinkage of 6. 6%, apparent porosity of 57%, bulk density of 0. 75 g · cm^-3, compressive strength of 2.7 MPa, and thermal conductivity at 350 ℃ of 0. 152 -0. 216 W·( m·K)^-1.This indicates that the pyrophyllite decomposition at high temperatures forms mullite and amorphous quartz introducing volume expansion, which counteracts some shrinkage at high temperatures. So it is feasible to use pyrophyllite, fly ash waste and clay to prepare lightweight insulation refractory materials. 展开更多

The atten- tion is focused on energy by-products (EBP). Energy by-products are generated during burning and desul- phurization in thermal power plants. Classical high-tem- perature -fly ash (class F.fly ash according to ASTM C618) is the most important and .fly ash from .fluidized technology ( class C-fly ash) is the second group. In the Czech Republic, power plants produce about 14 million tons of energy by-products every year. Utilization of these products in ceramic technology means a reduction of raw material costs and also it helps to reduce adverse environ- mental impact. Class F-fly ash ( FFA ) and cinder from high temperature combustion (CD) were used in light- weight insulation fireclay bricks. We can use these mate- rials as a grog and a lightening agent for materials with bulk density over 900 kg · m-3 and classification tem- perature up to 1 150 ℃. Class C.fly ash (CFA) is be- ing tested in a wide range of the refractory materials. For example, it can be used in lightweight fireclay bricks, fireclay bricks for stoves, acid-resistant fireclay bricks or refractory castables. The range of potential products, where EBP could be used, is very wide and energy by-products have become an important raw mate- rial source. 展开更多

A Test Method for Torsion Strength of Refractory Materials at Elevated Temperatures

New apparatus for the determination of torsion strength of refractory materials at elevated temperatures has been developed in this work. With the employment of heating wire and induction heating unit,this device can carry out torsion strength test at high temperatures at the heating rate ranging from 10 ℃/min to 200 ℃/min.Torsion strength of high alumina brick,magnesia brick and Si3 N4 bonded SiC brick has been tested at different heating rates of 10 ℃/min,100 ℃/min and 200℃/min,separately. Results indicate that,for high alumina brick,the tested torsion strength at the heating rate of 10 ℃/min is very close to that at 100 ℃/min,but very different from that at 200 ℃/min. The tested torsion strength of magnesia brick at different heating rates differs greatly,while that of Si3 N4 bonded SiC brick is similar. This suggests that the structure of refractory materials with poor thermal shock resistance might be damaged when the heating rate of 200 ℃/min was applied,but the heating rate of 100 ℃/min is possible for a lot of refractory products. At fast heating rates,it takes only1 h to finish a test at elevated temperatures,thus saving a lot of time and energy. 展开更多

The dissolution of alumina-based refractory ceramics in CaO-Al2O3-SiO_(2)slag melts was performed based on the in-situ observation system of an ultra-high-temperature laser confocal microscope,and the effect of the CaO/SiO_(2)slag mass ratio(C/S ratio)on the dissolution rate of alumina-based refractory ceramics was investigated.The results indicate that the dissolution rate increases with an increase of the C/S ratio and is mainly controlled by diffusion.During the early stage of dissolution,for all C/S ratios,the dissolution process conforms to the classical invariant interface approximation model.During the later stage of dissolution,when the C/S ratio is≥6,the dissolution process is significantly different from the model above because of the formation of a thick interfacial layer,which can be explained by dissolution kinetics. 展开更多

The results show that the slag resistance of Al_2O_3-SiC-C shaped refractory is improved when 2% or 3% Si_2N_2O is added. A reasonable amount of Si_2N_2O added into Al_2O_3-Si C-C shaped refractory can produce silicon oxide into the slag, which can improve the viscosity of slag and prevent the slag erosion and penetration. 展开更多

The iron tailings of Bayan Obo mines are solid waste,which occupies land area and also causes environmental pollution;however,this waste can be recycled.In this study,based on the characteristics of iron minerals and fluorocarbonate contained in Bayan Obo iron tailings,clean magnetization roasting of iron minerals by bastnaesite from iron tailings during in-situ suspension magnetization roasting in a neutral atmosphere was explored.The results show that for iron tailings with a mass of 12 g,a N_(2) gas flow rate of 600 mL/min,and roasting for 5 min at 800℃,iron concentrate with a 60.44%iron grade at an iron recovery of 76.04%could be obtained.X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the weak magnetic hematite was reduced to strong magnetic magnetite in the neutral atmosphere,without additional reductant.The kinetics of the magnetization roasting of mineral mixtures(bastnaesite and hematite)in a neutral atmosphere showed that the optimal reaction mechanism function was the three-dimensional diffusion model with activation energy of 161.8838 kJ·mol^(-1);this indicates that the reaction was a heterogeneous,diffusion-controlled solid-state reaction. 展开更多

The corrosion behavior of alumina-chromia refractory against two kinds of industrial slags (coal slag and iron smelting slag) at 1550℃ was investigated via thermodynamic simulations. In the proposed simulation model, the initial slag first attacks the matrix and surface aggregates and subsequently attacks the inner aggregates. The simulation results indicate that the slag chemistry strongly affects the phase formation and corrosion behavior of the refractory brick. Greater amounts of alumina were dissolved and spinel solid phases formed when the brick interacted with iron smelting slag. These phenomena, as well as the calculated lower viscosity, may lead to much deeper penetration than that exhibited by coal slag and to more severe corrosion compared to that induced by coal slag. The thermodynamic calculations well match the experimental observations, demonstrating the efficiency of the proposed simulation model for evaluating the corrosion behavior of alumina-chromia refractory. 展开更多

The range of potential products, where EBP could be used, is very wide and energy by-products have become an important raw material source. In this paper the attention was focused on class C fly ash and its usage in field of refractory materials. Experimental works were carried out on mixtures with fly ash and clay. The properties of alumina-magnesia refractory castables with SnO2 additive in 0 - 5 wt% range were investigated. The phase composition, microstructure, physical and mechanical properties of these refractories were studied. The results showed that the addition of SnO2 could have a great influence on the properties of alumina-magnesia refractory castables. The expansion, apparent porosity and strength of refractories with SnO2 were all more prominent than those of reference samples, which were attributed to the formation of CA6 and enhanced bonding. Meanwhile SnO2 could react with spinel and CA6 to form solid solution. 展开更多

The sintered samples are characterized in terms of bulk density, apparent porosity, true density, percentage densification, mechanical, thermo-mechanical properties like cold modulus of rupture, hot modulus of rupture and thermal shock resistance and structural properties by XRD.
