It is difficult to attract FDI into western China. This situation might not be explained by traditional geographical factors, because the gap of inward FDI between the western and the eastern regions of China has increased. This paper attempts to explain the situation from an industrial perspective by exploring the industrial differences in the two regions and analyzing their effects in terms of industrial development level, industrial structure and industrial linking capability. The results reveal that industrial factors are important barriers to the inflow of FDI to western China. 展开更多

The paper assesses the economic impacts of the natural forest protection program (NFPP) on the economy of Yunnan Province, China, in terms of gross output, value added, employment, and household income. An input-output model is developed to estimate NFPP's economic impacts by means of backward linkages in the forestry sector and logging and haulage sector. It is found that the NFPP has positive impacts on gross output, value added and household income in the initial year, but has significantly negative impacts on the regional economy in the following years as the investment decreases. 展开更多

To sustain the upland conversion program (UCP) in China after the government compensation expires, we suggest an establishment of a domestic carbon market where forest carbon from the UCP can be traded. Taking southwest China's Yunnan Province as an example, we explored the feasibility of switching the UCP to a carbon offset project. The breakeven carbon price which is equivalent to the opportunity cost of agricultural cultivation was estimated and then compared with the carbon price in the international market. We found that it is feasible to change the UCP to a carbon offset project if the duration is longer than 10 years at a discount rate of 7%, and if the recent bid price (147.2 Yuan.t-1) for Chinese carbon offset project prevails. The feasibility is better for converted land with lower productivity when the project duration is given. For a given site index, the feasibility is lower as pro- ject length is reduced. The results of sensitivity analysis show that the feasibility will be enhanced as the discount rate increases; however, the changes in the price of agricultural products and the amount of sequestered carbon have insignificant effects on the choice of sites and project duration. 展开更多

Using the "matching extent" method, this article conducts a multi-perspective analysis on the compatibility of the investment strategies of the western region and MNCs,as well as national policies on foreign investment. Research indicates that low matching extent amongst the above three decision-makers is an important reason for the disadvantage of the western region in terms of FDI attraction, and this situation will not change in the short term. In addition, this article also sheds light on how to increase matching extent. 展开更多

Safety evaluation studies indicate that both turmeric and curcumin are well tolerated at a very high dose without any toxic effects. Thus, turmeric and its constituents have the potential for the development of modern medicine for the treatment of various diseases. So in this review, we describe the various metabolic roles of curcumin and activities for the benefit of human health. 展开更多
