Research Nexus and Implications of Learner Identity in Foreign Language Education

One of the most obvious markers of an individual’s identity is their language.However,in some ways,the relationship between identity and language acquisition seems to be missed.In fact,a lot of studies have shown that identity may influence the reasons behind language acquisition,especially in bilingual or multilingual societies.Learning English can provide EFL(English as a Foreign Language)students with a good sense of identity and encourage them to practice their agency,which can improve learning efficiency and effectiveness.This paper examines how the efficacy and results of language learning are influenced by the learner’s identity.

Toward Culture： Some Basic Elements of Culture-based Instruction in China＇s High Schools

This paper first summarizes that traditional EFL teaching considers target language isolatedly beyond its culture. It, therefore, stresses the interdependence of language and culture. It analyzes the existing problems and their predominant causes in basic EFL teaching, and discusses the possible solutions to be taken to solve such problems. It suggests that there is culture-based instruction for high achievement in classroom acquisition of the target culture. It deems undoubtedly that the systematic permeation of cross-cultural communication aiming at developing cross-cultural awareness is one of the most effective steps toward cultural appropriateness in authentic communication.

A Discussion of Foreign Language Listening Problems and Their Causes among Intermediate EFL learners in Chinese universities

Listening has been considered as the most important language skill by many researchers but in Chinese context it has been overlooked for years.The Foreign Language(FL)listening problems gradually reveal when students attend to the Listening Course in universities or colleges.This paper at first illustrates the importance of listening in foreign language learning and provides a discussion on the top-down and bottom-up processes with the analysis of Anderson's three-model of language comprehension[9]as well as the factors affecting listening comprehension in Foreign Language in general,aiming at the illustration of the necessity on one of the bottom-up processes-the Spoken Word Recognition(SWR).The analysis of two issued official guiding documents for Chinese university students and the current situation of English listening teaching in Chinese universities are followed,providing a general background on English listening teaching in Chinese context.Three possible foreign language listening problems and their causes are proposed,followed by the pedagogical suggestions to EFL learners who are improving their listening skills and instructors who are advancing their teaching procedures.

Strategies of Back Translation of Works on China Written by Modern Foreign Scholars--Illustrated by Translation of Chinese Characteristics

Since 1980s,with the deepening of the cultural communication between China and western countries,more and more works on China written by modern foreign scholars are translated into Chinese,and most of the versions are of high quality. But there also exist some common deficiencies,the most representative of which lie in the versions reflecting the Chinese elements,that is,the versions are ( 1) less formal; ( 2) less idiomatical and ( 3) unable to correct the errors of the original. However,translation practice shows that back translation is an effective way to solve the problems above. Based on the discussion of the back translation theory and his experience from translating Chinese Characteristics,the author presents some corresponding strategies about back translation.

The Research Status of Chinese and Foreign Ecoliterature Study of the Recent 20 Years

Based on the core and CSSCI source documents from CNKI and American Web of Science＇s literature on ecoliterature as data source, this paper carries on CiteSpace visualization mapping analysis of Chinese and foreign ecoliterature study of the recent 20 years. By analyzing the lead author, research institute, high frequency keywords, highly cited literature etc., this paper discovers the core topics, research hotspots and frontiers in recent years and the new forms of ecoliterature, the change of international frontier, the new opportunities of ecoliterature research are found. The paper presents a direct view of the study on ecoliterature both in China and abroad. In the end, this paper offers guiding and expectation to Chinese scholars with regard to future research.

Reasons for Endangerment of Manchu and Hezhe Languages

In the Tungus-Manchu group, the endangerment of Manchu and Hezhe languages has been confirmed in the linguistic circles in China. Today, only aged people insome Manchu and Hezhe villages of Heilon^iang Province speak these two languages. This paper explores and analyzes the reasons for the endangerment of Manchu and Hezhe languages and provides evidence of the general rules of language endangerment. The research shows that social, psychological and linguistic factors work together to endanger the two languages. Their switch and variation modes have jointly endangered themselves, and the gradual and sudden changes in their linguistic systems have played a joint force. This paper is significant as a reference for further research into universal rules for the endangered languages.

Problems and Strategies of English Teaching in Rural Middle Schools in the Era of New Media

With the deepening of curriculum reform in junior high school,the education field is undergoing tremendous changes.Besides,with the rapid development of the Internet today,students have been exposed to various new media software since childhood.The existing education and teaching are also desperately keeping up with the pace of the times,and continue to bring online teaching to the practical classrooms of rural middle schools through new media.Teachers should not only impart basic professional knowledge to students,but also improve students'ability to use English.

A case study of changing motivation in foreign language learning

After perceiving a common phenomenon of English learning at college in China, this paper presents a case study of motivation. In this study, a questionnaire is conducted twice among 156 Chinese college students when they are sophomores and seniors. It intends to identify some components of foreign language learning motivation and probes into the causes for the changing motivations of students throughout 4-year college education. The findings suggest that the instrumental motivation plays a crucial role in foreign language learning context.

The Application of Situational Teaching Approach in Senior Middle School English Class

With the rapid advancing of the new English curriculum reform, English teaching has also been enriched constantlyand many teaching approaches have sprung up. Situational teaching is one of them, as one of the most popularteaching approaches, playing a crucial role in English classroom teaching. This paper is mainly devoted toexploring the origins and development of situational teaching approach, functions as well as ways to apply it tosenior middle school English classes. The enlightenment of the development of New Oriental School on Chinese educational system

In modern society, the essence of social competition is the competition of talents who are in need of education, and the education＇s quality can decide a nation＇s future and destiny. With the continuous development of China, Chinese educational system is also facing a new stage of development. Starting with analyzing the case of New Oriental School, a very popular training institution in China, this paper finds its sponsoring characteristics and the current situation of education in China by surveying and comparing some data. It is found that New Oriental School＇s success is the integration of Chinese and western culture. On the one hand, New Oriental School pays attention to training teachers and learning advanced teaching ideas and methods of western countries, on the other hand, its education is directed towards Chinese examination-oriented education, which results from the current situation that China has a large population and sharp competitions and the examination-oriented education can not be replaced in this moment. Chinese education can get a lot of inspirations from New Oriental School＇s successful experience. This paper makes a suggestion that China can benefit from the mode of New Oriental School, learning the advanced concepts and teaching methods of western countries, and doing some improvements to explore a suitable way for Chinese educational development.

Error Analysis of Personal Pronouns Use in English Writing of Junior High School Students:With the Tutored Students as Subjects

In recent years,analyses of linguistic errors in junior high English writing have been widely carried out in China.However,those studies that specialize in the misuse of personal pronouns are relatively rare.On the basis of Error Analysis theory,this paper regarded the tutored six students in Grade 8 by the author as the subjects, summarized three types of errors in personal pronouns use and their causes by analyzing subjects’writing samples and conducting interviews,and finally put forward some suggestions so as to contribute to the teaching and learning of junior high English writing.
