It, therefore, stresses the interdependence of language and culture. It analyzes the existing problems and their predominant causes in basic EFL teaching, and discusses the possible solutions to be taken to solve such problems. It suggests that there is culture-based instruction for high achievement in classroom acquisition of the target culture. It deems undoubtedly that the systematic permeation of cross-cultural communication aiming at developing cross-cultural awareness is one of the most effective steps toward cultural appropriateness in authentic communication. 展开更多

Listening has been considered as the most important language skill by many researchers but in Chinese context it has been overlooked for years.The Foreign Language(FL)listening problems gradually reveal when students attend to the Listening Course in universities or colleges.This paper at first illustrates the importance of listening in foreign language learning and provides a discussion on the top-down and bottom-up processes with the analysis of Anderson's three-model of language comprehension[9]as well as the factors affecting listening comprehension in Foreign Language in general,aiming at the illustration of the necessity on one of the bottom-up processes-the Spoken Word Recognition(SWR).The analysis of two issued official guiding documents for Chinese university students and the current situation of English listening teaching in Chinese universities are followed,providing a general background on English listening teaching in Chinese context.Three possible foreign language listening problems and their causes are proposed,followed by the pedagogical suggestions to EFL learners who are improving their listening skills and instructors who are advancing their teaching procedures. 展开更多

Strategies of Back Translation of Works on China Written by Modern Foreign Scholars--Illustrated by Translation of Chinese Characteristics

Since 1980s,with the deepening of the cultural communication between China and western countries,more and more works on China written by modern foreign scholars are translated into Chinese,and most of the versions are of high quality. But there also exist some common deficiencies,the most representative of which lie in the versions reflecting the Chinese elements,that is,the versions are ( 1) less formal; ( 2) less idiomatical and ( 3) unable to correct the errors of the original. However,translation practice shows that back translation is an effective way to solve the problems above. Based on the discussion of the back translation theory and his experience from translating Chinese Characteristics,the author presents some corresponding strategies about back translation. 展开更多

In the Tungus-Manchu group, the endangerment of Manchu and Hezhe languages has been confirmed in the linguistic circles in China. Today, only aged people insome Manchu and Hezhe villages of Heilon^iang Province speak these two languages. This paper explores and analyzes the reasons for the endangerment of Manchu and Hezhe languages and provides evidence of the general rules of language endangerment. The research shows that social, psychological and linguistic factors work together to endanger the two languages. Their switch and variation modes have jointly endangered themselves, and the gradual and sudden changes in their linguistic systems have played a joint force. This paper is significant as a reference for further research into universal rules for the endangered languages. 展开更多

It intends to identify some components of foreign language learning motivation and probes into the causes for the changing motivations of students throughout 4-year college education. In modern society, the essence of social competition is the competition of talents who are in need of education, and the education's quality can decide a nation's future and destiny. With the continuous development of China, Chinese educational system is also facing a new stage of development. Starting with analyzing the case of New Oriental School, a very popular training institution in China, this paper finds its sponsoring characteristics and the current situation of education in China by surveying and comparing some data. It is found that New Oriental School's success is the integration of Chinese and western culture. On the one hand, New Oriental School pays attention to training teachers and learning advanced teaching ideas and methods of western countries, on the other hand, its education is directed towards Chinese examination-oriented education, which results from the current situation that China has a large population and sharp competitions and the examination-oriented education can not be replaced in this moment. Chinese education can get a lot of inspirations from New Oriental School's successful experience. This paper makes a suggestion that China can benefit from the mode of New Oriental School, learning the advanced concepts and teaching methods of western countries, and doing some improvements to explore a suitable way for Chinese educational development. 展开更多
