This paper investigates the formation of the sacredness of Gaomin Temple(高旻寺)during the Qing Dynasty and reveals that its sacredness is closely related to the writing of the“Cultural Jiangnan(文化江南)”1 image of...This paper investigates the formation of the sacredness of Gaomin Temple(高旻寺)during the Qing Dynasty and reveals that its sacredness is closely related to the writing of the“Cultural Jiangnan(文化江南)”1 image of Yangzhou(扬州)by a group of intellectuals in the city.Based on the theory of the semiotics of cities and subculture,this article points out that under the joint action of such factors as salt merchants,emperors,the palace on tour,literati,and monks,Gaomin Temple was able to retain its religious value in the symbolic meaning of the space structure,get through diverse social conditions,and align itself with societal values.Therefore,the temple has become an urban symbolic system of a“semantic field”,which is also the social source of its sanctity.展开更多
