Associations between Social Media Use and Sleep Quality in China:Exploring the Mediating Role of Social Media Addiction

Sleep quality is closely linked to people’s health,and during the COVID-19 pandemic,the sleep patterns of residents in China were notably poor.The lockdown in China led to an increase in social media use,prompting questions about its impact on sleep.Therefore,this study investigates the association between social media use and sleep quality among Chinese residents during the COVID-19 outbreak,highlighting the potential mediating role of social media addiction.Data were collected via questionnaires through a cross-sectional survey with 779 valid responses.Variance analysis was used to test for differences in social media use among different demographic variables.Bivariate correlation analysis was employed to explore the relationships between variables,while regression analysis investigated the correlations between various media factors and sleep quality.Additionally,Bootstrap sampling was utilized to analyze the potential mediating influence of social media addiction in the relationship between social media use and sleep.The study's findings reveal a significant correlation between social media use,particularly before bedtime,and sleep quality(p<0.01),with pre-sleep activity notably linked to poorer overall sleep scores(β=0.141,p=0.004).Although the daily use of social media did not directly impact most individuals’sleep quality,specific platforms like news apps,short video apps,dating apps,and content community platforms were associated with higher levels of social media addiction,subsequently negatively affecting sleep quality.Specifically,the use of news apps(B=0.068,95%CI[0.000,0.019]),short video apps(B=0.112,95%CI[0.001,0.031]),dating apps(B=0.147,95%CI[0.000,0.028]),and content community platforms(B=0.106,95%CI[0.001,0.028])was found to increase the risk of social media addiction,subsequently leading to adverse effects on sleep quality.The study underscores a notable link between social media use and sleep quality,suggesting that mindful social media habits,particularly before bedtime,and reducing addiction-associated apps could enhance sleep quality.

Evolution and Characteristics of "Carbon Neutrality Movies"

"Carbon neutrality movies"are movies that focus on carbon neutrality as the object of expression and dissemination.Using carbon neutrality as an element,it influences the development of the plot,reflects environmental changes,and focuses on climate change caused by carbon emissions.At the same time,it focuses on offsetting carbon emissions through carbon neutrality behavior,showcasing the impact of carbon neutrality.From the perspective of ecological movies,the evolution of carbon neutrality movies at three stages can be explored.The first stage is high-carbon movies that reflect the high conflict between humans and the natural environment.The second stage is low-carbon movies,reflecting humanity's pursuit of a harmonious coexistence between humans and nature,thus adopting green and low-carbon behaviors.The third stage is carbon neutrality movies,which awaken or guide the public to pay attention to carbon emissions,promote low-carbon living,guide life practice in a carbon neutrality way,and create a better life.There are three characteristics of"carbon neutrality movies",including scientific reflection on global warming,advocating energy conservation and emission reduction in daily life,and promoting clean energy in policies.

Study protocol: A national cross-sectional study on psychology and behavior investigation of Chinese residents in 2023

Introduction:This study protocol specifies the primary research line and theoretical framework of the 2023 Survey of the Psychology and Behavior of the Chinese Population.It aims to establish a consistent database of Chinese residents'psychological and behavioral surveys through multi-center and large-sample cross-sectional surveys to provide robust data support for developing research in related fields.It will track the public's physical and psychological health more comprehensively and systematically.Methods:The study was conducted from June 20,2023 to August 31,2023,using stratified and quota sampling methods.A total of 150 cities across 800 communities/villages were surveyed,selected from China(Despite extensive coordination,we have been unable to contact our counterparts in the Taiwan region of China to obtain relevant statistical data).The questionnaires were distributed to the public one-on-one and face-to-face by trained surveyors.The questionnaires included basic information about the individual,personal health status,basic information about the family,the social environment in which the individual lives,psychological condition scales,behavioral level scales,other scales,and attitudes towards topical social issues.Supervisors conducted quality control during the distribution process and returned questionnaires,logically checked and cleaned for data analysis.Discussion:Data collection has been finished,and scientific outputs based on this data will support the development of health promotion strategies in China and globally.In the aftermath of the pandemic,it will guide policymakers and healthcare organizations to improve their existing policies and services to maximize the physical and mental health of the Chinese population.Trial Registration:This study was filed in the National Health Security Information Platform(Record No.:MR-37-23-017876)and officially registered in the China Clinical Trials Registry(Registration No.:ChiCTR2300072573).

Education Equipment Configuration and Funding Situation Analysis of Underdeveloped Areas of Information Technology in Rural Primary and Secondary School

In order to understand IT teaching conditions and living environment in the less developed areas of rural primary and secondary school, the paper uses questionnaire survey equipment to investigate education of some rural underdeveloped areas of information technology in primary and secondary school in Jiangxi. And it has analyzed 2011-2013 investment and construction of the status quo in education funding for information technology equipment. The results show： Less Developed Areas in primary and secondary school education information and technology education equipment cannot meet the needs of the development of education with lack of funding support, poor school environment and information technology teaching conditions. And this phenomenon has been analyzed, and effective measures are to improve primary and secondary school education in underdeveloped areas of information technology conditions and educational level.

Research on the Evolution of Media Practices of Leading Cadres’ New Media and the Communication Characteristics

Purpose/Significance: This study aims to define the concept of leading cadres new media usage in China specifically, and to describe and analyze the forms and typical cases and characteristics of leading cadres new media in different stages. Method/Process: Based on the themes and contents of a few media accounts of leading cadres at different ranks, we summarizes leading cadres new media usage in a systematic perspective and content analysize method. Result/Conclusion: The study defines the concept of Leading Cadres’ new media from the perspective of media practice, determine its position as a media communication platform in the government affairs new media communication system and its relationship with the other elements, and then systematically review the evolution of its media practice from personal website, blog, microblog and microblog to WeChat, live show. On this basis, with the Harold Lasswell communication model, this article summarizes leading cadres new media communication characteristics from five aspects: content producer, content, channel, audience, and effect. Future studies may also enhance the empirical research from the effect perspective.

Analysis of the interactive meaning of journalistic images of the human papillomavirus vaccine and the perceptions of female undergraduate students

Objectives:This paper focuses on the underlying mechanisms of women's perceptions of persuasive visual health information.Methods:In the image viewing process,a separation between the image producer and the image viewer occurs,and the connection between the two is fractured.This mixed method research included modal discourse analysis(coding based on visual grammar theory),an eye tracking experiment,a questionnaire survey,and in-depth semi-structured interviews.The interactive meanings of journalistic images related to the human papillomavirus(HPV)vaccine were identified through four sets of codes.In addition,the perceptions of female viewers were analyzed.Results:In the first set of stimuli,i.e.,the infographic,the female participants focused most of their attention on information about the nine-valent HPV vaccine.An analysis of the interactive meaning of two sets of journalistic pictures,i.e.,fictional pictures and nonfictional pictures,indicated that the image producers did not implement useful viewer involvement strategies to persuade viewers.Furthermore,female viewers focused their attention on the"similar other"during the viewing process,gazing at the patient the longest as the primary area of interest(AOI).Conclusions:The study indicates that the current persuasive visual information about the HPV vaccine needs further improvement due to the high demand for information about HPV from the Chinese female audience.

What leads to readers' satisfaction with the mobile news apps service? An investigation into the roles of content originality and user experience

Purpose: This study aims to explore whether content originality and user experience have positive effects on online news readers’ satisfaction with the mobile apps service.Design/methodology/approach: Data was collected via a Web-based survey. Data analysis of this study can be divided into two stages. In the first stage, a descriptive statistical analysis was conducted based on a sample of 612 respondents. In the second stage, the correlation among content originality, user experience and satisfaction was analyzed based on a sample of 377 mobile news apps users. Findings: Results of the first stage showed that social media and mobile news apps were the most important tools for users to access news, and different types of media were playing complementary roles in information transmission. Users held a positive attitude toward their mobile news reading experience and they described news they read on mobile apps with such words as "interesting", "instant", "positive", "profound", and "ironic". Results of the second stage confirmed our hypothesis that content originality and user experience both had positive impacts on user satisfaction.Research limitations: The questionnaires were distributed entirely online, so the sample may not be representative of the general population being studied and thus undermine the reliability and generalization of the findings to some extent. Moreover, this study adopted only one method(survey) and more methods such as interviews can be used to improve the accuracy of the results.Practical implications: The findings of this study can not only provide insights into a better understanding of users’ mobile reading behavior, but also help mobile information service providers attract more users.Originality/value: This is one of the first studies to explore the effects of content originality and user experience on online news readers’ satisfaction with the mobile apps service.

Tell health stories comprehensively and accurately: A case study of health edition of People's Daily

Objectives:People increasingly search for health information through the media and make decisions about their health based on these health stories.The mainstream media,including newspapers,are often the first source for the public to obtain health information.This study aims to assess the health stories reported in the health edition of People's Daily in 2019 with four tools of the Media Doctor Toolkit(MDT),which can be an effective tool to evaluate the quality of public health stories.Based on the results,we attempt to address the gap in media coverage in terms of reporting on public health issues,and promote media to display the image of medical staff objectively,both of which can improve relationship of doctors,nurses and patients.Methods:A prospective quantitative analysis of the quality of health stories reported in the health edition of People's Daily from 1 February to September 31,2019 was conducted.Forty-eight articles were collected and divided into four groups according to the MDT standards.Four rating tools were adapted from the MDT to assess the quality of the groups with corresponding criteria.Results:Forty-eight unique health stories were assessed with four MDT rating tools.The mean total satisfactory score was 80%.Health advice had the highest average satisfactory score,84%,compared with health policy group and public health problems and their solutions,at 80%and 77%,respectively.Health news group had the lowest score at 73%.Conclusion:This study provides a description of the quality of health stories on People's Daily.The overall quality of People's Daily was fairly good,although there was a wide range of quality between groups.The health edition of People's Daily covers a wide range of health topics such as new medical methods,doctorpatient relationship,advanced nursing practice,lifestyle change of health promotion etc.which promote excellence in providing the latest health information,representing medical staff image,resolve the disharmonious factors in the relationship between doctors and patients,and creating a good medical environment for the public.The findings of this study also provide insight into problems in health reporting of People's Daily.

2009 is a fruitful year for the research on internet communication in China.This article will review and comment on papers from 20 different CSSCI journals which specialize in the field of internet communication. 1.Basic theory of internet communication Some researchers believe that the new media is a chaotic system.The spread of information based on new media is kind of circulation from order to disorder,then back to a new order.The results are unpredictable.Some researchers turn their attention to new media and empowerment theory.Others apply sociological theory to the applications and impacts of the emerging internet communities which consist of SNS,instant messaging,blog,etc.Some researchers take 2011 families from 10 major Chinese cities for examples and analyze the city dwellers' preference in internet using.Some researchers think Neil Possman,the representative figure of media ecology theories tend to focus on whether the new media and technological developments are harmful to the culture.Possman's theories can significantly aid our understanding of the essence and drawbacks of network media.2.The research of public opinions and network events Some researchers are convinced that public opinions expressed on the internet reflect the deep structural revolution compared to public opinions expressed in traditional means.Some researchers predict about the topics of public opinions supervision in the future.Some point out that highly-developed public opinions system can help introduce the bottom-up public opinions supervision into the highly centralized political patterns,which is a kind of complementary to public management mechanisms.Some researchers conclud the spreading features of the hottest internet events in 2009.According to some researchers,the lack of space for public opinions and post-modern cultural representation labeled with 'post-modernity' are the main causes of the new popular sayings on the internet.

When Wilbur Schramm attempted to connect the established departments of journalism and speech into a new discipline called"communication studies",his invitation was criticized as being without a core set of theories and methodologies and the field of"communication studies"was viewed as too undefined,all-inclusive,and even chaotic to justify its standing as a discipline at all[1].Today,most of these doubts and critics disappeared when we witness the 80-year fruitful development of the"communication studies".Schramm titled his seminal book"Men&Women,Messages and Media"to summarize and highlight the necessity of including multiple disciplines to participate the"communication studies"[2].

Study on the History, Current Situation and Countermeasures of Meteorological Theme Parks

From the establishment of first meteorological theme park-Xiamen Huwei Mountain Meteorological Theme Park in 2009 to the end of September,2019,11 meteorological theme parks have been built in China.There are 12 meteorological parks under construction and 10 shelved projects.China put forward the concept of meteorological theme park earlier in the world,and the construction of meteorological theme parks in China started from Xiamen Huwei Mountain Meteorological Park.The construction of meteorological theme parks in China has experienced the germination stage,initial stage,development stage and normative stage.Main construction experience contains:paying attention to top level design and overall planning,emphasizing leaders'attention and experts'participation,concerning multi-party linkage and coordination,and strengthening media momentum and extensive publicity.The main deficiencies are the lack of brand awareness,the diversity of names and weak folk identity.But seen from the perspective of development,the future prospect of meteorological theme park construction is very broad.In the future,the following countermeasures should be taken for the construction of meteorological theme parks in China:overall planning for approval,highlighting personality and characteristics,strengthening propaganda and grasping popularization of science,enhancing connotation and bringing benefits into play.It should combine meteorological science popularization with regional culture,use new media and other channels and ways to establish brand and expand influence,and build regional meteorological science popularization base.
