The in-process changes of weld nugget growth during the Resistance Spot Welding were investigated based on the resistance of input electrical impedance. To compute the time varying resistance of input electrical impedance, the welding voltage and current signals are measured simultaneously and then converted into complex-valued signals by using Hilbert transform. Comparing with the dynamic contact resistance as reported in literature, it showed that the time varying resistance of input electrical impedance can be accurately correlated with the physical changes of weld nugget growth. Therefore, it can be used to characterize the in-process changes of weld nugget growth. Several new findings were reported based on the investigation of spot welds under no weld, with and without weld expulsion conditions. 展开更多

Numerical Investigation of Flow Structure Interaction Coupling Effects in Hard Disk Drives

A two step coupli... This paper studies the flow structural interaction (FSI) within a hard disk drive (HDD) through the use of a novel coupling method. The interaction studied was the fluid induced vibration in the HDD. A two step coupling approach was used, where the fluid and structural components were solved sequentially. The result obtained was a ratio of 0.65 between the vibration amplitudes of a fixed head stack assembly (HSA) and a moving HSA. The ratio was next applied on a real 3.5 inch HDD, to allow the parameter to be further improved upon. A new benchmark index of 0.69 was developed from this. This parameter may allow future researchers to model the out of plane vibrations of a HSA easily, saving precious time. A 31% more accurate simulation of FSI within 3.5 inch HDD at 15000 rpm is achieved by the use of this new coupling method and benchmark index. 展开更多

Analytical solutions of temperature distributions and the Nusselt numbers in forced convection are reported for flow through infinitely long parallel plates, where the upper plate moves in the flow direction with constant velocity and the lower plate is kept stationary. The flow is assumed to be laminar, both hydro-dynamically and thermally fully developed, taking into account the effect of viscous dissipation of the flowing fluid. Both the plates being kept at specified and at different constant heat fluxes are considered as thermal boundary conditions. The solutions obtained from energy equation are in terms of Brinkman number, dimensionless velocity and heat flux ratio. These parameters greatly influence and give complete understanding on heat transfer rates that has potentials for designing and analyzing energy equipment and processes. 展开更多

Micro Fork Hinge for MEMS Devices

Flexible beams are often used for rotation in MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems) devices to avoid the friction problems associated with hinge. However, the rotation angle of flexible beam is very limited and not enough for many applications. In this paper, we introduce a quasi hinge structure named as Fork Hinge, which has a larger equivalent rotation angle ({e.g.}10 times lager) and is more stable than the flexible hinge, while keeping its interesting properties. We develop an analytical model and simulate the Fork hinge behavior with FEM analysis. We find a good correlation with Fork Hinges fabricated using a SOI (Silicon on Insulator) wafer and DRIE (Deep Reactive Ion Etching). 展开更多

Long-term observation of the triboelectric effect has not only proved the feasibility of many novel and useful tribo-devices(e.g., triboelectric nanogenerators), but also constantly motivated the exploration of its mysterious nature. In the pursuit of a comprehensive understanding of how the triboelectric process works, a more accurate description of the triboelectric effect and its related parameters and factors is urgently required. This review critically goes through the fundamental theories and basic principles governing the triboelectric process. By investigating the difference between each charging media, the electron, ion, and material transfer is discussed and the theoretical deduction in the past decades is provided. With the information from the triboelectric series, interesting phenomena including cyclic triboelectric sequence and asymmetric triboelectrification are precisely analyzed. Then, the interaction between the tribo-system and its operational environment is analyzed, and a fundamental description of its effects on the triboelectric process and results is summarized. In brief, this review is expected to provide a strong understanding of the triboelectric effect in a more rigorous mathematical and physical sense. 展开更多

Predictive simulation of engine combustion is key to understanding the underlying complicated physicochemical processes,improving engine performance,and reducing pollutant emissions.Critical issues as turbulence modeling,turbulence-chemistry interaction,and accommodation of detailed chemical kinetics in complex flows remain challenging and essential for highfidelity combustion simulation.This paper reviews the current status of the state-of-the-art large eddy simulation(LES)/probability density function(PDF)/detailed chemistry approach that can address the three challenging modelling issues.PDF as a subgrid model for LES is formulated and the hybrid mesh-particle method for LES/PDF simulations is described.Then the development need in micro-mixing models for the PDF simulations of turbulent premixed combustion is identified.Finally the different acceleration methods for detailed chemistry are reviewed and a combined strategy is proposed for further development. 展开更多
