Polycaprolactone(PCL)scaffolds that are produced through additive manufacturing are one of the most researched bone tissue engineering structures in the field.Due to the intrinsic limitations of PCL,carbon nanomaterials are often investigated to reinforce the PCL scaffolds.Despite several studies that have been conducted on carbon nanomaterials, such as graphene(G)and graphene oxide(GO),certain challenges remain in terms of the precise design of the biological and nonbiological properties of the scaffolds. This paper addresses this limitation by investigating both the nonbiological(element composition, surface, degradation, and thermal and mechanical properties)and biological characteristics of carbon nanomaterial-reinforced PCL scaffolds for bone tissue engineering applications. Results showed that the incorporation of G and GO increased surface properties(reduced modulus and wettability),material crystallinity, crystallization temperature, and degradation rate. However, the variations in compressive modulus, strength, surface hardness, and cell metabolic activity strongly depended on the type of reinforcement. Finally,a series of phenomenological models were developed based on experimental results to describe the variations of scaffold’s weight, fiber diameter, porosity, and mechanical properties as functions of degradation time and carbon nanomaterial concentrations. The results presented in this paper enable the design of three-dimensional(3D)bone scaffolds with tuned properties by adjusting the type and concentration of different functional fillers. 展开更多

This work investigated the effect of process parameters on densification, microstructure, and mechanical properties of a nickel-aluminum-bronze(NAB)alloy fabricated by laser powder bed fusion(LPBF)additive manufacturing. The LPBF-printed NAB alloy samples with relative densities of over 98.5%were obtained under the volumetric energy density range of 200−250 J/mm^(3).The microstructure of the NAB alloy printed in both horizontal and vertical planes primarily consisted ofβ'martensitic phase and bandedαphase. In particular,a coarser-columnar grain structure and stronger crystallographic texture were achieved in the vertical plane, where the maximum texture intensity was 30.56 times greater than that of random textures at the(100)plane.Increasing the volumetric energy density resulted in a decrease in the columnar grain size, while increasing the amount ofαphase.Notably,β_(1)'martensitic structures with nanotwins and nanoscaleκ-phase precipitates were identified in the microstructure of LPBF-printed NAB samples with a volumetric energy density of 250 J/mm^(3).Furthermore,under optimal process parameters with a laser power of 350 W and scanning speed of 800 mm/s,significant improvements were observed in the microhardness(HV 386)and ultimate tensile strength(671 MPa),which was attributed to an increase in refined acicular martensite. 展开更多

This study offers significant insights into the multi-physics phenomena of the SLM process and the subsequent porosity characteristics of ZK60 Magnesium(Mg)alloys.High-speed in-situ monitoring was employed to visualise process signals in real-time,elucidating the dynamics of melt pools and vapour plumes under varying laser power conditions specifically between 40 W and 60 W.Detailed morphological analysis was performed using Scanning-Electron Microscopy(SEM),demonstrating a critical correlation between laser power and pore formation.Lower laser power led to increased pore coverage, whereas a denser structure was observed at higher laser power. This laser power influence on porosity was further confirmed via Optical Microscopy(OM)conducted on both top and cross-sectional surfaces of the samples. An increase in laser power resulted in a decrease in pore coverage and pore size, potentially leading to a denser printed part of Mg alloy.X-ray Computed Tomography(XCT)augmented these findings by providing a 3D volumetric representation of the sample internal structure, revealing an inverse relationship between laser power and overall pore volume.Lower laser power appeared to favour the formation of interconnected pores, while a reduction in interconnected pores and an increase in isolated pores were observed at higher power. The interplay between melt pool size, vapour plume effects, and laser power was found to significantly influence the resulting porosity, indicating a need for effective management of these factors to optimise the SLM process of Mg alloys. 展开更多

This paper aims to develop an automatic miscalibration detection and correction framework to maintain accurate calibration of LiDAR and camera for autonomous vehicle after the sensor drift.First,a monitoring algorithm that can continuously detect the miscalibration in each frame is designed, leveraging the rotational motion each individual sensor observes. Then,as sensor drift occurs, the projection constraints between visual feature points and LiDAR 3-D points are used to compute the scaled camera motion, which is further utilized to align the drifted LiDAR scan with the camera image. Finally, the proposed method is sufficiently compared with two representative approaches in the online experiments with varying levels of random drift, then the method is further extended to the offline calibration experiment and is demonstrated by a comparison with two existing benchmark methods. 展开更多

This paper is investigating the use of composite armour reinforced by nanomaterials, for the protection of light armoured(LAV) and medium armoured military vehicles(MAV), and the interaction between the composite materials and high-performance ballistic projectiles. Four armour materials, consisted of front hybrid fibre reinforced polymer cover layer, ceramic strike-face, fibre reinforced polymer intermediate layer and the metal matrix composite reinforced backplate, were manufactured and assembled by adhesive technology. The proposed laminated protection system is suitable for armoured ground vehicles;however, it could be used as armour on ground, air and naval platforms. The design of the protection system, including material selection and thickness, was elaborated depending on the performance requirements of Level 4 + STANAG 4569 military standard(projectile 14.5 mm × 114 mm API B32) and especially on a design philosophy which is analysed with the specifications. The backplate of this new composite is a hybrid material of Metal Matrix Composite(MMC) reinforced with carbon nanotubes(CNTs), manufactured with the use of powder metallurgy technique. The composite backplate material was morphologically, mechanically and chemically analysed. Results show that all plates are presenting high mechanical properties and ballistic characteristics, compared to commonly used armour plates. Real military ballistic tests according to AEP-STANAG 4569 were carried out for the total composite armour systems. After the ballistic tests, AA2024-CNT3 showed the best protection results, compared with the other plates(AA2024-CNT1 and AA2024-CNT2), with the projectile being unable to fully penetrate the composite plate. 展开更多

This paper proposes a deformation evolution and perceptual prediction methodology for additive manufacturing of lightweight composite driven by hybrid digital twins(HDT).In order to improve manufacturing quality of irregular lightweight composite through boosting conceptual design in aeronautic and aerospace engineering, the HDT meaning hybridization of physical and digital domains, including deformation and energy efficiency can be built, where the essential parameters can be perceptually predicted in advance,by virtue of the fusion of physical sensors and digital information. The long short term memory(LSTM)can be employed to void vanishing gradient problem and improve predicting precision via Recurrent Neural Networks, thereby laying a foundation for the HDT.The diverse manufacturing requirements of different regions are integrated into the parameters designing phase by attaching region weights confirmed via empiricism and in-service simulation. The effects of slicing strategy and external support structures on manufacturing quality are considered from the perspective of improving dimensional accuracy. The manufacturing efficiency and comprehensive costs are accounted as consideration factors, which are perceptually predicted via LSTM.The designed manufacturing parameters through HDT were virtually examined by evaluating the deformation and equivalent stress distributions of fabricated lightweight component with composite material through AM process simulation. The physical experiments were conducted to verify the HDT-based pre-designing and optimization method of manufacturing parameters via fused deposition modeling(FDM).The energy consumption of actual manufacturing process was measured via digital power meter and applied to evaluate accuracy of perceptual prediction outcomes. The dimensional accuracy and distortion distribution of the manufactured lightweight prototype made with composite material were measured through the coordinate measuring machine(CMM)and 3D optical scanner. The proposed method demonstrates effectiveness in improving manufacturing quality and accurately predicting energy consumption, which have been verified with a three-way solenoid valve element,in which the maximum deformation was reduced by 39.78%and the mean absolute percentage error for perceptual prediction was 3.76%. 展开更多

The degradation of mechanical properties of overdischarge battery materials manifests as a significant effect on the energy density, safety, and cycle life of the batteries. However, establishing the correlation between depth of overdischarge and mechanical properties is still a significant challenge.Studying the correlation between depth of overdischarge and mechanical properties is of great significance to improving the energy density and the ability to resist abuse of the batteries. In this paper, the mechanical properties of the battery materials during the whole process of overdischarge from discharge to complete failure were studied. The effects of depth of overdischarge on the elastic modulus and hardness of the cathode of the battery, the tensile strength and the thermal shrinkage rate of the separator, and the performance of binder were investigated. The precipitation of Cu dendrites on the separator and cathode after dissolution of anode copper foil is a key factor affecting the performance of battery materials. The Cu dendrites attached to the cathode penetrate the separator, causing irreversible damage to the coating and base film of the separator, which leads to a sharp decline in the tensile strength, thermal shrinkage rate and other properties of the separator. In addition, the Cu dendrites wrapping the cathode active particles reduce the adhesion of the active particles binder.Meanwhile, the active particles are damaged, resulting in a significant decrease in the elastic modulus and hardness of the cathode. 展开更多

Here,we developed novel extended piecewise bilinear power law(C-m)models to describe flow stresses under broad ranges of strain, strain rate, and temperature for mechanical and metallurgical calculations during metal forming at elevated temperatures. The traditional C-m model is improved upon by formulating the material parameters C and m,defined at sample strains and temperatures as functions of the strain rate. The coefficients are described as a linear combination of the basis functions defined in piecewise patches of the sample strain and temperature domain.A comparison with traditional closed-form function flow models revealed that our approach using the extended piecewise bilinear C-m model is superior in terms of accuracy, ease of use,and adaptability;additionally, the extended C-m model was applicable to numerical analysis of mechanical, metallurgical, and microstructural problems.Moreover,metallurgy-related values can be calculated directly from the flow stress information.Although the proposed model was developed for materials at elevated temperatures,it can be applied over a broad temperature range. 展开更多

As a newly invented parallel kinematic machine(PKM), Exechon has found its potential application in machining and assembling industries due to high rigidity and high dynamics. To guarantee the overall performance, the loading conditions and deflections of the key components must be revealed to provide basic mechanic data for component design. For this purpose, a kinetostatic model is proposed with substructure synthesis technique. The Exechon is divided into a platform subsystem, a fixed base subsystem and three limb subsystems according to its structure. By modeling the limb assemblage as a spatial beam constrained by two sets of lumped virtual springs representing the compliances of revolute joint, universal joint and spherical joint, the equilibrium equations of limb subsystems are derived with finite element method(FEM). The equilibrium equations of the platform are derived with Newton's 2nd law. By introducing deformation compatibility conditions between the platform and limb, the governing equilibrium equations of the system are derived to formulate an analytical expression for system's deflections. The platform's elastic displacements and joint reactions caused by the gravity are investigated to show a strong position-dependency and axis-symmetry due to its kinematic and structure features. The proposed kinetostatic model is a trade-off between the accuracy of FEM and concision of analytical method, thus can predict the kinetostatics throughout the workspace in a quick and succinct manner. The proposed modeling methodology and kinetostatic analysis can be further expanded to other PKMs with necessary modifications, providing useful information for kinematic calibration as well as component strength calculations. 展开更多

A constructive method was presented to design a global robust and adaptive output feedback controller for dynamic positioning of surface ships under environmental disturbances induced by waves, wind, and ocean currents. The ship's parameters were not required to be known. An adaptive observer was first designed to estimate the ship's velocities and parameters. The ship position measurements were also passed through the adaptive observer to reduce high frequency measurement noise from entering the control system. Using these estimate signals, the control was then designed based on Lyapunov's direct method to force the ship's position and orientation to globally asymptotically converge to desired values. Simulation results illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed control system. In conclusion, the paper presented a new method to design an effective control system for dynamic positioning of surface ships. 展开更多

This paper presents a kinematic analysis of the locomotion of a gecko, and experimental verification of the kinematic model.Kinematic analysis is important for parameter design, dynamic analysis, and optimization in biomimetic robot research. The proposed kinematic analysis can simulate, without iteration, the locomotion of gecko satisfying the constraint conditions that maintain the position of the contacted feet on the surface. So the method has an advantage for analyzing the climbing motion of the quadruped mechanism in a real time application. The kinematic model of a gecko consists of four legs based on 7-degrees of freedom spherical-revolute-spherical joints and two revolute joints in the waist. The motion of the kinematic model is simulated based on measurement data of each joint. The motion of the kinematic model simulates the investigated real gecko's motion by using the experimental results. The analysis solves the forward kinematics by considering the model as a combination of closed and open serial mechanisms under the condition that maintains the contact positions of the attached feet on the ground. The motions of each joint are validated by comparing with the experimental results. In addition to the measured gait, three other gaits are simulated based on the kinematic model. The maximum strides of each gait are calculated by workspace analysis. The result can be used in biomimetic robot design and motion planning. 展开更多

Among the different bioprinting techniques, the drop-on-demand(DOD)jetting-based bioprinting approach facilitates contactless deposition of pico/nanoliter droplets ofmaterials and cells for optimal cell–matrix and cell–cell interactions.Although bioinks play a critical role in the bioprinting process, there is a poor understanding of the influence of bioink properties on printing performance(such as filament elongation, formation of satellite droplets, and droplet splashing)and cell health(cell viability and proliferation)during the DOD jetting-based bioprinting process. An inert polyvinylpyrrolidone(PVP360,molecular weight=360 kDa)polymerwas used in this study to manipulate the physical properties of the bioinks and investigate the influence of bioink properties on printing performance and cell health. Our experimental results showed that a higher bioink viscoelasticity helps to stabilize droplet filaments before rupturing from the nozzle orifice. The highly stretched droplet filament resulted in the formation of highly aligned“satellite droplets,”which minimized the displacement of the satellite droplets away from the predefined positions.Next,a significant increase in the bioink viscosity facilitated droplet deposition on the wetted substrate surface in the absence of splashing and significantly improved the accuracy of the deposited main droplet.Further analysis showed that cell-laden bioinks with higher viscosity exhibited higher measured average cell viability(%),as the presence of polymer within the printed droplets provides an additional cushioning effect(higher energy dissipation)for the encapsulated cells during droplet impact on the substrate surface, improves the measured average cell viability even at higher droplet impact velocity and retains the proliferation capability of the printed cells.Understanding the influence of bioink properties(e.g.,bioink viscoelasticity and viscosity)on printing performance and cell proliferation is important for the formulation of new bioinks, and we have demonstrated precise DOD deposition of living cells and fabrication of tunable cell spheroids(nL–μL range)using multiple types of cells in a facile manner. 展开更多

The effect of external constraints on Li diffusion in high-capacity Li-ion battery electrodes is investigated using a coupled finite deformation theory. It is found that thinfilm electrodes on rigid substrates experience much slower diffusion rates compared with free-standing films with the same material properties and geometric dimensions. More importantly, the study reveals that mechanical driving forces tend to retard diffusion in highly-constrained thin films when lithiation-induced softening is considered, in contrast to the fact that mechanical driving forces always enhance diffusion when deformation is fully elastic. The results provide further proof that nano-particles are a better design option for nextgeneration alloy-based electrodes compared with thin films. 展开更多

With the increasing attention to the state and role of people in intelligent manufacturing, there is a strong demand for human-cyber-physical systems (HCPS) that focus on human-robot interaction. The existing intelligent manufacturing system cannot satisfy efcient human-robot collaborative work. However, unlike machines equipped with sensors, human characteristic information is difcult to be perceived and digitized instantly. In view of the high complexity and uncertainty of the human body, this paper proposes a framework for building a human digital twin (HDT) model based on multimodal data and expounds on the key technologies. Data acquisition system is built to dynamically acquire and update the body state data and physiological data of the human body and realize the digital expression of multi-source heterogeneous human body information. A bidirectional long short-term memory and convolutional neural network (BiLSTM-CNN) based network is devised to fuse multimodal human data and extract the spatiotemporal features, and the human locomotion mode identifcation is taken as an application case. A series of optimization experiments are carried out to improve the performance of the proposed BiLSTM-CNN-based network model. The proposed model is compared with traditional locomotion mode identifcation models. The experimental results proved the superiority of the HDT framework for human locomotion mode identifcation. 展开更多

In order to study omithopter flight and to improve a dynamic model of flapping propulsion, a series 0f tests are conducted on a flapping-wing blimp. The blimp is designed and constructed from mylar plastic and balsa wood as a test platform for aerodynamics and flight dynamics. The blimp, 2.3 meters long and 420 gram mass, is propelled by its flapping wings. Due to buoyancy the wings have no lift requirement so that the distinction between lift and propulsion can be analyzed in a flight platform at low flight speeds. The blimp is tested using a Vicon motion tracking system and various initial conditions are tested including accelerating flight from standstill, decelerating from an initial speed higher than its steady state, and from its steady-state speed but disturbed in pitch angle. Test results are used to estimate parameters in a coupled quasi-steady aerodynamics/Newtonian flight dynamics model. This model is then analyzed using Floquet theory to determine local dynamic modes and stability. It is concluded that the dynamic model adequately describes the vehicle's nonlinear behavior near the steady-state velocity and that the vehicle's linearized modes are akin to those of a fixed-wing aircraft. 展开更多

Delaminations in structures may significantly reduce the stiffness and strength of the structures and may affect their vibration characteristics. As structural components, beams have been used for various purposes, in many of which beams are often subjected to axial loads and static end moments. In the present study, an analytical solution is developed to study the coupled bending-torsion vibration of a homogeneous beam with a single delamination subjected to axial loads and static end moments. Euler-Bernoulli beam theory and the "free mode" assumption in delamination vibration are adopted. This is the first study of the influences of static end moments upon the effects of delaminations on natural frequencies, critical buckling loads and critical moments for lateral instability. The results show that the effects of delamination on reducing natural frequencies, critical buckling load and critical moment for lateral instability are aggravated by the presence of static end moment. In turn, the effects of static end moments on vibration and instability characteristics are affected by the presence of delamination. The analytical results of this study can serve as a benchmark for finite element method and other numerical solutions. 展开更多

Bio-inspired macrostructure array(MAA,size:submillimeter to millimeter scale)materials with special wettability(MAAMs-SW)have attracted significant research attention due to their outstanding performance in many applications, including oil repellency,liquid/droplet manipulation,anti-icing,heat transfer, water collection, and oil–water separation. In this review,we focus on recent developments in the theory, design, fabrication, and application of bio-inspired MAAMs-SW.We first review the history of the basic theory of special wettability and discuss representative structures and corresponding functions of some biological surfaces, thus setting the stage for the design and fabrication of bio-inspired MAAMs-SW.We then summarize the fabrication methods of special wetting MAAs in terms of three categories:additive manufacturing, subtractive manufacturing, and formative manufacturing,as well as their diverse functional applications, providing insights into the development of these MAAMs-SW.Finally,the challenges and directions of future research on bio-inspired MAAMs-SW are briefy addressed.Worldwide efforts, progress, and breakthroughs from surface engineering to functional applications elaborated herein will promote the practical application of bio-inspired MAAMs-SW. 展开更多
