TCM Treatment of Infectious Atypical Pneumonia——A Report of 16 Cases

Objective: To probe into the mechanism on TCM treatment of infectious atypical pneumonia (severe acute respiratory syndrome, SARS) and evaluate its feasibility and effectiveness. Method: Twelve TCM prescriptions of herbal drugs (orally or iv) were used to treat 16 cases of SARS without using glucocorticoids, anti-viral agents, immune-regulators or antibiotics (in case there was no definite bacterial infections). The symptoms, signs, chest roentgenograms and lab examinations were carefully monitored and recorded for evaluation of the effectiveness. Results: The average fever abatement time was 4.44±1.46days and the mean absorption time of gross pulmonary infiltration was 10.87±2.92 days. No exacerbation occurred during the treatment. Conclusion: TCM intervention could effectively control and alleviate the symptoms and prevent the disease from exacerbation.

CLINICAL OBSERVATION ON OSTEOPOROSIS TREATED WITH TRADITIONAL KIDNEY-TONIFYING MEDICAMENTS

The method of scoring kidney deficiency symptoms and bone density was used to judge therapeutic efficacy on osteoporosis of traditional kidney-tonifying drugs. It was proved that the drugs not only improved clinical symptoms but also delayed the developmental pro-cess of this disorder. It also verified the correctness of the traditional theory that the kidney dominates the bone and generates the marrow.

A Clinical Investigation on Garlicin Injectio for Treatment of Unstable Angina Pectoris and Its Actions on Plasma Endothelin and Blood Sugar Levels

To investigate the therapeutic effects and mechanisms of garlicin for treatment of unstable angina pectoris (UAP), garlicin injectio was intravenously dripped 60 mg/day in 34 cases for 10 days. Nitroglycerine was used in 21 cases of the control group. The results showed that the total effective rates in improving symptoms and electrocardiogram after garlicin treatment were respectively 82% and 62%, and that the plasma endothelin and blood sugar levels were markedly lowered in cases with hyperglycemia.

THERAPEUTIC EFFECTS OF THE COMBINED CHINESE AND WESTERN MEDICINE ON METASTATIC CARCINOMA IN THE SUPRACLAVICULAR LYMPH NODES——An Analysis of 285 Cases

Between 1985 and 1989, 285 cases of metastatic carcinoma in the supraclavicular lymph nodes were treated by the following five methods: Chinese medication, radiotherapy plus Chinese medication, chemotherapy plus Chinese medication, combined Chinese and Western medicine and expectant treatment. Analysis shows that radiotherapy plus Chinese medication has the best curative effect with an effective rate of 75.5%. The effective rates were 74.2% for the combined treatment, 55.5% for the chemotherapy plus medication, 12.5% for the Chinese medication, and none for expectant treatment.

Nephrotic Syndrome and The TCM Treatment

Nephrotic syndrome is a symptom complex characterized by severe albuminuria (+++ to ++++ in qualitative test and ＞ 3.5 g/L in quantitative test),hypoproteinemia (＜ 3 g/L), edema and hyperlipemia(apparently increased plasma cholesterol and triglyceride and increased low density lipoprotein,LDL) due to abnormally increased permeability of glomerular capillary wall against plasma proteins.There may be lipoiduria with normal or abnormal level of high density lipoprotein (HDL).

TCM Treatment for 63 Cases of Senile Dyssomnia

In order to study the therapeutic effects of the TCM drugs on senile dyssomnia, 121 such patients were randomly divided into a treatment group of 63 cases (given the TCM drugs) and a control group of 58 cases (given estazolam). The changes shown in the SDRS and HAMA scores and the other indexes were observed in both of the two groups to evaluate the therapeutic effects. The results showed that the effective rate was 76.3% in the treatment group, and it was 69.1% in the control group; and that the TCM drugs had better effects in improving such symptoms as lethargy, dry mouth, and rebound of insomnia. Therefore, it can be concluded that the effect of the TCM drugs is better for senile dyssomnia than that of the Western drug estazolam.

Phenylacetate Down-regulates Expression of RNA Editing Deaminase ADAR2 mRNA in U-251MG Glioma Cells

OBJECTIVE To observe the effect of phenylacetate on the expression of RNA editing deaminase ADAR2 mRNA in glioma cells. METHODS Primary glial cells from human brain tissue and glioma U-251MG cells were cultured. The expression of ADAR2 mRNA was detected by a semiquantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The levels of ADAR2 mRNA expression before and after treatment with phenylacetate were tested by RT -PCR and image analysis. The level of ADAR2 gene expression was presented as the ratio expression rate (RER) of ADAR2 gene/β-actin based on computer image analysis. RESULTS The ADAR2 mRNA displayed mild expression in brain glial cells, and a high expression level in high-grade malignant U-251MG glioma cells. Computer image analysis showed that the RERs of the ADAR2 gene in the U-251MG cells before and after treatment with 4.0, and 5.0 mM phenylacetate for 8 h were 100.0, 73.5, 60.3, respectively. The expression of ADAR2 mRNA was decreased by phenylacetate in glioma U-251MG cells. CONCLUSION Phenylacetate can decrease the expression of ADAR2 mRNA in glioma cells, suggesting that phenylacetate, as a drug, may act on the course of RNA editing in gliomas.

Impacts of androgen deprivation therapy on the risks and outcomes of SARS-CoV-2 infection in patients with prostate cancer

Studies have investigated the effects of androgen deprivation therapy(ADT)use on the incidence and clinical outcomes of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19);however,the results have been inconsistent.We searched the PubMed,Medline,Cochrane,Scopus,and Web of Science databases from inception to March 2022;13 studies covering 84003 prostate cancer(PCa)patients with or without ADT met the eligibility criteria and were included in the meta-analysis.We calculated the pooled risk ratios(RRs)with 95%confidence intervals(CIs)to explore the association between ADT use and the infection risk of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)and severity of COVID-19.After synthesizing the evidence,the pooled RR in the SARS-CoV-2 positive group was equal to 1.17,and the SARS-CoV-2 positive risk in PCa patients using ADT was not significantly different from that in those not using ADT(P=0.544).Moreover,no significant results concerning the beneficial effect of ADT on the rate of intensive care unit admission(RR=1.04,P=0.872)or death risk(RR=1.23,P=0.53)were found.However,PCa patients with a history of ADT use had a markedly higher COVID-19 hospitalization rate(RR=1.31,P=0.015)than those with no history of ADT use.These findings indicate that ADT use by PCa patients is associated with a high risk of hospitalization during infection with SARS-CoV-2.A large number of high quality studies are needed to confirm these results.

Effectiveness of external Sanjierupi Gao on mastalgia caused by mammary gland hyperplasia: a placebo controlled trial

OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the curative effect of external application of the Chinese drug,Sanjierupi Gao,on mastalgia caused by mammary gland hyperplasia.METHODS:This randomized,double-blinded,and placebo controlled study enrolled 260 patients with mammary gland hyperplasia from five hospitals.Patients were randomly and equally divided in-to a Sanjierupi Gao treatment group and a placebo control group.An adhesive plaster was applied to the most painful area on either breast for 7 h a day.Treatment lasted for two menstrual cycles without application during menstruation.Mastalgia was used as the main index of curative effect.The change before and after treatment in days of mastalgia,the time to alleviate pain,pain extent,and severe pain scores were observed.RESULTS:Compared to the control group,the treatment group had significantly fewer days of mastalgia(P<0.01),a significantly lower severe pain score(P<0.01),and significantly less subjective pain and tenderness(P<0.05 and P<0.01,respectively).Three days before the follow-up visit,the pain score in the treatment group was significantly lower than that in the control group(P<0.05).A non-parametric test was used to compare the time to alleviate mastalgia between the two groups and found no statistical difference(Z=0.313,P=0.754).CONCLUSION:Application of Sanjierupi Gao can decrease mastalgia duration in patients with mammary gland hyperplasia during menstruation and alleviate the extent of mastalgia.The time to alleviate pain is psychologically influenced.
