In the present study, monthly data between 2000 and 2014 were used to analyze the temporal and spatial distributions of DOP in the Mir Bay, the northern South China Sea. The DOP residence time(TDOP) was also investigated using a simple regression analysis in combination with chlorophyll a(Chl a) measurements while excess DOP(ΔDOP), produced by the biogeochemical processes of autotrophic production and heterotrophic removal, was determined using a two-component mixing mass-balance model in combination with salinity measurements. The results showed that the DOP concentration was(0.017±0.010) mg/L higher in the surface-water compared with the bottom-water and higher in the inner Tolo Harbour and waters adjacent to Shatoujiao compared with the main zone of the bay. Although seasonal changes and annual variability in the DOP were small, the surface DOP concentration was higher in the wet season(April–September)than in the dry season(October–March) due to the impacts of seaward discharges and atmospheric deposition into the bay. Measurement and regression results showed that the DOP release rate from phytoplankton production was about 1.83(gP)/(gChl a) and the TDOP was about 7 d, which implied that the DOP cycle in the bay was rapid. The ΔDOP was calculated from the model to be about 0.000 mg/L in the main zone of the bay and about 0.002 mg/L in the inner Tolo Harbour and waters adjacent to Shaotoujiao, suggesting that the autotrophic production of DOP was almost balanced by the heterotrophic removal in the main zone of the bay and dominated in the inner Tolo Harbour and waters adjacent to Shaotoujiao. In conclusion, the Mirs Bay is very productive and fairly heterotrophic.展开更多

The model reproduce...Using a Finite-Volume Community Ocean Model, we investigated the dynamic mechanism of the South China Sea Warm Current(SCSWC) in the northern South China Sea(NSCS) during winter monsoon relaxation. The model reproduces the mean surface circulation of the NSCS during winter, while model-simulated subtidal currents generally capture its current pattern. The model shows that the current over the continental shelf is generally southwestward, under a strong winter monsoon condition, but a northeastward counter-wind current usually develops between 50-and 100-m isobaths, when the monsoon relaxes. Model experiments, focusing on the wind relaxation process, show that sea level is elevated in the northwestern South China Sea(SCS), related to the persistent northeasterly monsoon. Following wind relaxation, a high sea level band builds up along the mid-shelf, and a northeastward current develops, having an obvious vertical barotropic structure. Momentum balance analysis indicates that an along-shelf pressure gradient provides the initial driving force for the SCSWC during the first few days following wind relaxation. The SCSWC subsequently reaches a steady quasi-geostrophic balance in the cross-shelf direction, mainly linked to sea level adjustment over the shelf. Lagrangian particle tracking experiments show that both the southwestward coastal current and slope current contribute to the northeastward movement of the SCSWC during winter monsoon relaxation.展开更多

Water mass analysis showed that surface water masses in the Southeast Indian Ocean were less salty in March than in November. Compared with November, the subtropical front (STF) moved southward about one degree of latitude in March, whereas seasonal variability of the subantarctic front (SAF) and polar front (PF) locations was not obvious. In March, the saline front moved northward about two degrees of latitude relative to the thermal front in the upper 100 m at the SAF, which was the northern boundary of sub- Antarctic surface water (SASW). Analysis of climatological SST gradients from the satellite data showed that regions of enhanced sea surface temperature (SST) gradients were collocated with frontal locations identified with the XCTD data using water mass criteria. The surface expression of the PF identified by the SST gradient was further south by about one degree of latitude relative to the subsurface expression of the PF identified by the northern boundary of cold water.展开更多

The steady leaping WBC nearly blocks all eddies from propagating across it through the gap completely. However, both cyclonic and anti-cyclonic eddies can migrate across a penetrating WBC in the vicinity of a gap, while inducing an opposite type of eddies on the cyclonic side of the WBC by weakening or strengthening the intrusion of the WBC. Both type of eddies gained strength from the WBC in the course of the propagation across the WBC in the gap. Eddies approaching the gap from the upstream are found to migrate more easily into the western basin due to the advection of the WBC. The migration speeds of the eddies are almost unchanged by the presence of the WBC in all experiments.展开更多

The coupling simulation between astronomical tide and tsunamis has significant meaning for evaluating the risk and early-warning of tsunamis in the Guangdong coastal area.

文摘Deep-sea mineral image segmentation plays an important role in deep-sea mining and underwater mineral resource monitoring and evaluation. The application of artificial intelligence technology to deep-sea mining projects can effectively improve the quality and efficiency of mining. The existing deep learning-based underwater image segmentation algorithms have problems such as the accuracy rate is not high enough and the running time is slightly longer. In order to improve the segmentation performance of underwater mineral images, this paper uses the Pix2PixHD(Pixel to Pixel High Definition)algorithm based on Conditional Generative Adversarial Network(CGAN)to segment deep-sea mineral images. The model uses a coarse-to-fine generator composed of a global generation network and two local enhancement networks, and multiple multi-scale discriminators with same network structures but different input pictures to generate highquality images. The test results on the deep-sea mineral datasets show that the Pix2PixHD algorithm can identify more target minerals under certain other conditions. The evaluation index shows that the Pix2PixHD algorithm effectively improves the accuracy rate and the recall rate of deep-sea mineral image segmentation compared with the CGAN algorithm and the U-Net algorithm. It is important for expanding the application of deep learning techniques in the field of deep-sea exploration and mining.

文摘A 1.5-layer quasi-geostrophic reduced gravity ocean circulation model is used to study the propagation of mesoscale eddies across a western boundary current(WBC) either leaping across or penetrating in an anti-cyclonic path through the gap. The migration speeds of the eddies are almost unchanged by the presence of the WBC in all experiments.

文摘This study presents a Lagrangian view of upper water exchanges across the Luzon Strait based on the finite-time Lyapunov exponents(FTLE)fields computed from the surface geostrophic current. The Lagrangian coherent structures(LCSs)extracted from the FTLE fields well identify the typical flow patterns and eddy activities around the Luzon Strait. In addition, they reveal the intricate transport paths and fluid domains, which are validated by the tracks of satellite-tracked surface drifters and cannot be visually recognized in the velocity maps. The FTLE fields indicate that there are mainly four types of transport patterns near the Luzon Strait;among them, the Kuroshio northward-flowing"leaping"pattern and the clockwise rotating"looping"pattern occur more frequently than the"leaking"pattern of the direct Kuroshio branch into the SCS and the"outflowing"pattern from the SCS to the Pacific. The eddy shedding events of the Kuroshio at the Luzon Strait are further analyzed, and the importance of considering LCSs in estimating transport by eddies is highlighted. The anticyclonic eddy(ACE)shedding cases reveal that ACEs mainly originate from the looping paths of Kuroshio and thus could effectively trap the Kuroshio water before eddy detachments.LCSs provide useful information to predict the positions of the upstream waters that finally enter the ACEs.In contrast,LCS snapshots indicate that during the formation of cyclonic eddies(CEs),most CEs are not connected with the pathways of Kuroshio water.Hence, the contribution of CEs to the surface water exchanges from the Pacific into the SCS is tiny.
