Dementia is one of the greatest global challenges for health and social care in the 21st century.Alzheimer’s disease(AD),the most common type of dementia,is by no means an inevitable consequence of growing old.Several lifestyle factors may increase,or reduce,an individual’s risk of developing AD.Much has been written over the ages about the benefits of exercise and physical activity.Among the risk factors associated with AD is a low level of physical activity. The relationship between physical and mental health was established several years ago.In this review,we discuss the role of exercise(aerobic and resistance)training as a therapeutic strategy for the treatment and prevention of AD.Older adults who exercise are more likely to maintain cognition. We address the main protective mechanism on brain function modulated by physical exercise by examining both human and animal studies. We will pay especial attention to the potential role of exercise in the modulation of amyloid b turnover, inflammation, synthesis and release of neurotrophins, and improvements in cerebral blood flow.Promoting changes in lifestyle in presymptomatic and predementia disease stages may have the potential for delaying one-third of dementias worldwide.Multimodal interventions that include the adoption of an active lifestyle should be recommended for older populations. 展开更多

Chronic diseases have become a focal point of public health worldwide with estimates of trillions of dollars in annual health care cost and causing more than 36 million deaths a year. Lifestyle factors such as physical inactivity are heavily correlated with the development of many chronic diseases. New strategies for primary and secondary disease prevention are desperately needed to aid in blunting the negative economic and social impact of these diseases. Physical activity (PA) and exercise are now considered principal interventions for use in primary and secondary prevention of chronic diseases. Currently, more emphasis in primary prevention of disease is necessary to reduce disease risk in youth and adults; however with chronic disease prevalence so high, similar emphasis is also necessary for secondary prevention in those children and adults already inflicted with chronic diseases. Conditions such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and cancer are drastically improved when PA and exercise are part of a medical management plan. In addition, the national PA guidelines in conjunction with PA promotion tools like Exercise is MedicineTM are needed to promote increased PA and exercise levels worldwide. 展开更多

Objective: This study was conducted to examine the effects of aerobic exercise alone and aerobic exercise with resistance training on the quality of life in men over the age of 55 years with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods: A total of 54 participants were divided into the following three groups so that there were no significant differences in blood chemistry or physical ability indexes among the three groups: control, aerobic exercise, and aerobic exercise with resistance training. The latter two groups exercised for 24 weeks, while the control group performed no exercise. Blood chemistry levels and measures of physical ability in each group members were examined one day before and one day after the exercise regimens. Results: Compared with those before the study, blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin, triglycerides, cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein levels as well as vital capacity, reaction time, sit-and-reach ability, and balancing while standing on one leg with closed eyes were significantly improved in the aerobic exercise only group(P < 0.05). All these measures as well as high-density lipoprotein levels and grip, back, and leg strength were significantly improved in the combined aerobic and resistance training group(P < 0.05). By contrast, no significant differences before and after the experiment were found in any measure for the control group(P > 0.05). Conclusion: Although both aerobic exercise and aerobic exercise combined with resistance training for 24 weeks effectively improved the quality of life in patients with type 2 diabetes, the effect of the combined training was better than that of aerobic exercise alone. These results suggest that resistance training may be safely added to the rehabilitation training regimen of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. 展开更多

Purpose:The purpose of present study was to investigate the impact of sport experience on response inhibition and response re-engagement in expert badminton athletes during the stop-signal task and change-signal task. Methods:A total of 19 badminton athletes and 20 nonathletes performed both the stop-signal task and change-signal task.Reaction times(RTs)and event-related potentials were recorded and analyzed. Results:Behavioral results indicated that badminton athletes responded faster than nonathletes to go stimuli and to change signals, with faster change RTs and change-signal RTs,which take into consideration the variable stimulus onset time mean.During successful change trials in the change-signal task, the amplitudes of the event-related potential components N2 and P3 were smaller for badminton athletes than for nonathletes.Moreover,change-signal RTs and N2 amplitudes as well as change RTs and P3 amplitudes were significantly correlated in badminton athletes.A significant correlation was also found between the amplitude of the event-related potential component N1 and response accuracy to change signals in badminton athletes. Conclusion:Moderation of brain cortical activity in badminton athletes was more associated with their ability to rapidly inhibit a planned movement and re-engage with a new movement compared with nonathletes. The superior inhibitory control and more efficient neural mechanisms in badminton athletes compared with nonathletes might be a result of badminton athletes’ professional training experience. 展开更多

Background:Individuals at risk of suffering cardiovascular disease(CVD) present with larger increases in blood trigyceride(TG) concentration after a high-fat meal than do healthy individuals. These postprandial hypertriglyceride levels are an independent risk factor for CVD.Prescription of statins and a bout of prolonged exercise are both effective in lowering postprandial hypertriglyceride levels. We aimed to evaluate the comparative effectiveness of statins vs.a bout of aerobic exercise in reducing fasting and postprandial TG(PPTG) concentrations in indiv、duals at high nsk of developing CVD.Methods:Thirty-seven sltudies from a systematic literature search of the PubMed,EMBASE,and Cochrane databases were included in this review. The selected studies conducted trials involving statin therapy(n=20) or a bout of aerobic exercise(n=19) and measured their impact on PPTG levels as the outcome. Two studies analyzed both treatments and were included in duplicate. The meta-analysis was constructed using a random-effects model to calculate the mean difference(MD).The Student t test was used to compare the data sets for statins vs.exercise.Results:Overall,statin and exercise interventions showed similar reductions in PPTG levels, with an MD of-0.65 mmol/L for statins(95% confidence interval(95%CI):-0.54 to-0.77;p <0.001) and-0.46 mmol/L for exercise(95%CI:-0.21 to-0.71;p <0.01).However,statins lowered fasting TG levels more than exercise(MD=-1.54 mmol/L,95%CI:-2.25 to-0.83;p=0.009).Conclusion:Although aerobic exercise is effective in lowering blood TG levels, statins seem to be more efficient, especially in the fasted state.A combination of exercise and statins might reveal a valuable approach to the treatment and prevention of CVD.More studies are required to determine the underlying mechanisms and the possible additive effects of these interventions. 展开更多

Exergames can be considered a dual task because the games are performed by a man-videogame interface, requiring cognitive and motor functions simultaneously. Although the literature has shown improvements of cognitive and physical functions due to exergames, the intrinsic mechanisms involved in these functional changes have still not been elucidated. The aims of the present study were(1) to demonstrate the known biological mechanisms of physical exercise regarding muscle adaptation and establish a relationship with exergames; and(2) to present a neurobiological hypothesis about the neuroplastic effects of exergames on the cognitive function of institutionalized older persons. These hypotheses are discussed. 展开更多

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the extent that a static stretching program could increase heart rate (HR) and oxygen consumption (VO2), and if the increases were sufficient to serve as a warm-up for aerobic activity. Methods: The HR and VO2 of 15 male and 16 female college students were measured after either 12 min of passive static stretching (SS), or 12 rain pseudo-stretching (PS), which consisted of moving through the stretching positions without placing the muscles on stretch. Four different lower body stretches were used with each stretch held for 30 s before the participant moved to a different position, with the circuit being repeated four times. VO2 was determined by averaging breath-by-breath measures over the total 12 min. HR was obtained every 30 s and the 24 values were averaged. Warm-up benefit was determined from the 02 deficit accrued during 7-min cycling at 60% VOzmax. Results: HR (beats/rain, mean 4. SD) for SS (84 ± 11) was a significant (p 〈 0.05) 9% greater than PS (78 ± 12). Similarly, VO2 (mL/min, mean 4. SD) for SS (0.53 ± 0.13) was a significant 44% greater than PS (0.38 ± 0.11). The O2 deficit (L, mean 4, SD) for SS (0.64 ± 1.54) was not different from PS (0.72 ± 1.61). Conclusion: These data indicate that passive static stretching increases both HR and VO2, indicating that metabolic activity can be increased without muscle activation. The magnitude of the increases, however, is not sufficient to elicit a warm-up effect. 展开更多

Background:Paraoxonase 1(PON1) is an antioxidant enzyme that protects high-density lipoprotein(HDL) and low-density lipoprotein against oxidation.Limited studies have addressed the influenc of exercise on PON1 activity and its relationship with PON1 phenotypes. We investigated relationships between PON1-192 phenotypes,PON1 activity, aerobic exercise, and blood lipid and lipoprotein concentrations in middle-aged women. Methods:An exercise group(n=50) engaging in regular aerobic exercise and a control group(n=41) were selected from a subset of 300 Caucasian women that met the inclusion criteria.Serum PON1,salt-stimulated PON1(SSPON1),and arylesterase(ARE) activities;cholesterol levels and ARE activities of total HDL and HDL subgroups(HDLs)(supernatants obtained by polyethylene glycol);and blood lipid and lipoprotein concentrations were determined by standardized enzymatic methods.PON1-192 QQ(low activity),QR(moderate activity),and RR(high activity) phenotype groups were define using serum SSPON1/ARE activity ratios. The R-carries(RC) phenotype group consisted of the QR and RR groups combined. Results:All lipid and lipoprotein concentrations were greater in the exercise group than in the control group.Regardless of phenotype,no significan differences were observed between the exercise and control groups in terms of serum PON1,SSPON1,or ARE activity associated with HDLs(p〉 0.05),whereas PON1 activities in QQ-phenotyped women in the exercise group were significant y higher than those in the control group(p〈0.01),but not the RC group.A statistically significan interaction between PON1 phenotypes(QQ and RC groups) and exercise(exercise and control groups) on PON1 activity was found. Conclusion:These results showed that a regular aerobic exercise program can improve PON1 activity depending on PON1-192 phenotype, but not on lipid and lipoprotein levels,in middle-aged Turkish women. 展开更多

INTRODUCTION: Weightlifting has its own individual features, where it is important to select new element as well as individual work with them. Ascertaining these specific features of weightlifting sport, trainers are in charge of drafting as accurately as possible the training process, which should be repeatedly realized. PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: It is recognition of the level of technical, physical and anthropometric indicators of young new weightlifters, eliminating the problems arising during the training process to advance the sporting results. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 14 new weightlifters of the five sports clubs were taken into the study for a period of one year (March 2016-March 2017). During the development of national and international activities, we showed their technical results in the style of snatch, clean and jerk, while during training showed the indicators in classical auxiliary exercises with those of strength, weight and body height. The method of comparison for reports technical-strength and weight-height with weightlifters at the European and World level of this age group was used. The data subjected to statistical processing with ANOVA method. RESULTS: The optimum coefficient of ratio: the technique snatch with clean and jerk technique at the international level is p 〈 0.79-0.80, compared to our weightlifters in the study, showed that there is oscillation from the optimum p 〈 0.001 to p 〈 0.006. The coefficient weight to height moves 13-16 cm. CONCLUSIONS: This avoidance indicates an inadequate distribution of exercises loads during the training process, most of which take snatch exercises, which do not have a good influence on the performance of the clean and jerk technique results. Loads in classical and classical assistive exercises should be distributed to rights reports for high sports achievements. 展开更多

Background: Since it has been shown that spending 18 h under dim light conditions can result in reduced handgrip endurance, it was questioned whether or not a shorter exposure to dim light (i.e., 1 h) would have similar influence upon muscular endurance. Therefore this study compared the number of weighted knee extension lifts that could be done after spending 1 h in either dim or bright light. Methods: Participants (5 women, 11 men, college students 19--26 years) performed knee extension lifts to exhaustion with a load approximating 40% of their body weight. The lifts to exhaustion were measured immediately following 1 h of exposure to each of the following three con- ditions: dark (DL), room light (RL), and room light plus 5 mg melatonin (RLM). A minimum of 48 h separated each condition, and all par- ticipants started the exposures in a rested fed condition. Results: Average (±SD) number of knee extension lifts for RL (62.0 ± 22.0) was significantly (p 〈 0.05) greater than DL (51.4 ± 14.7) and RLM (57.8 ± 22.9). The number of RLM knee extension lifts was not significantly different from DL. Exposure to 1 h of dim light immediately prior to activity can result in a reduction in thigh muscle endurance. The decline in performance to short-term dim light exposure was similar to that found following longer-term exposure. Conclusion: It appears that light intensity can influence muscle endurance, however, at this time this effect cannot be directly related to endogenous melatonin production. 展开更多

Objective:To investigate the effects of rehabilitation exercise therapy on 6-minute walking distance (6 minute walk distance, 6MWD), brain natriuretic titanium (Brain natriuretic peptide, BNP) and (Minnesota heart failure quality of life scale, MLHFQ score in elderly patients with chronic heart failure (CHF).Methods: Choose xi'an medical college affiliated hospital heart treated with 96 cases of elderly patients with chronic heart failure (from January 2016 to January 2018), according to random number table method, divide the patients as control group and observation group 48 cases/group, control group to implement regular heart failure treatment, the observation group in the control group, the implementation of rehabilitation exercise therapy on the basis of comparing the clinical curative effect of two groups of indicators, heart colour to exceed, 6 MWDS, BNP levels, plate movement, MLHFQ score. Results: (1) compared with the control group, the total effective rate of the observation group was higher than that of the control group (P<0.05). (2). After treatment, the left ventricular end-diastolic diameter (Left ventricular end diastolic diameter, LVEDD) and the left ventricular end-systolic diameter (Left ventricular end systolic diameter, LVESD), BNP) in the observation group were higher than those in the control group. All the MLHFQ scores were lower than those in the control group (P<0.05). The left ventricular ejection fraction (Left ventricular ejection fraction, LVEF), stroke output (Stroke volume, SV) and treadmill metabolic equivalent (Metabolic equivalent, METs) were higher than those in the control group (P<0.05). The treadmill exercise time was longer than that in the control group (P<0.05), and its 6MWD was higher than that in the control group (P<0.05).Conclusion: Rehabilitation exercise therapy in elderly patients with chronic heart failure can effectively improve the cardiac function, enhance their exercise endurance and energy metabolism level, and improve the clinical efficacy and quality of life. 展开更多
