OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of Chinese herbal medicine(CHM) in the treatmentofsubacutethyroiditis.METHODS: Randomized controlled trials found in PubMed, Cochrane Library, and three Chinese databases were selected. RevMan 5.2 software was used to analyze the data with relative risk or mean difference, expressed with 95% of confidence interval. The quality of trials was assessed and gradedthe quality of evidence with GRADE profiler software.RESULTS: Twenty one studies were included. CHM was superior to Western Medicine(include prednisone and NSAIDs) in abating fever, relieving thyroid pain, recovering blood sedimentation, improving thyroid function, and preventing hypothyroidism(P<0.05), while no statistical differences were found in eliminating goiter and reducing relapse rate.CHM plusWestern Medicine were superior toWestern Medicine in abating fever, relieving thyroid pain, eliminating goiter, and reducing relapse rate, while no statistical differences(P>0.05) were found in recovering blood sedimentation and improving thyroid function. The incidence of adverse reactions in treatment group was lower than that in control group(relative risk was 0.12 and 95% confidence interval was 0.03-0.51). The methodological quality of trials is generally poor with a high risk of bias.CONCLUSION: CHM(particularly CHM combined withWestern Medicine) used to treat subacute thyroiditis may improve clinical symptoms and signs, reduce relapse rate, and alleviate the side effects of hormones. Due to poor methodological quality of included trials, further more high-quality studies are warranted to confirm the effectiveness and safety of CHM. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Ulcerative colitis(UC),also known as chronic nonspecific UC,is an inflammatory bowel disease characterized by diffuse colonic mucosal inflammation. The incidence and prevalence of UC have risen markedly, and the disease seriously affects the quality of life of patients, and poses a great burden on the world health care infrastructure and economy.CASE SUMMARY We present a 60-year-old man who had ulcerative colitis for more than 10 years, with recurrent abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea with mucopurulent stool. The treatments with sulfasalazine, mesalazine, and traditional Chinese medicine were not effective, and herbs-partitioned moxibustion(HPM)was then applied at“Zhongwan”(RN12),“Tianshu”(ST25),and“Qihai”(RN6)once a day for about 30 min,3 times per week, for 6 mo.His main clinical symptoms of abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea with mucopurulent stool gradually improved, and the mucosa had nearly healed,as observed under endoscopy by the 6th mo.The patient’s condition was alleviated without relapsing during the subsequent 3-mo follow-up period.HPM showed a significant effect in the treatment of ulcerative colitis in this case, and the effect would help the patient to maintain remission for at least 3 mo.CONCLUSION A series of symptoms of this UC patient significantly improved with the treatment of HPM. 展开更多

OBJECTIVE:To observe the effects of Buzhong Yiqi granule(补中益气颗粒)on thyroid function and ovarian function in rats with experimental autoimmune thyroiditis(EAT).METHODS:EAT model was replicate by using the method of mixing and injecting porcine thyroglobulin with Freund's adjuvant and high iodine.Rats were randomly divided into normal control(NC)group,EAT model(EAT)group, selenium yeast(PC)group, low dose Buzhong Yiqi(BZYQ-L)group,medium dose Buzhong Yiqi(BZYQ-M)group and high dose Buzhong Yiqi(BZYQ-H)group.After two months of drug intervention according to dosage,enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA)was used to measure the levels of free triiodothyronine(FT3),free thyroxine(FT4),thyroid-stimulating hormone(TSH),antithyroid peroxidase antibody(TPOAb),thyroglobulin antibody(TGAb)in peripheral blood of rats. The pathological changes of rat thyroid tissues were observed under light microscope with HE staining;ELISA was used to determine estradiol(E2),follicle-stimulating hormone(FSH),luteinizing hormone(LH),testosterone(T),antimüllerian hormone(AMH),and the pathological changes of rat ovarian tissues were observed under light microscope with hematoxylin and eosin staining.RESULTS:Compared with the NC group,BZYQ granule improved the thyroid and ovarian tissue morphology, and the levels of TPOAb,TGAb and TSH in the model group rats significantly increased(P<0.05),the thyroid tissue was severely destroyed, the levels of E2,FSH,LH,T,AMH significantly increased(P<0.05),and the ovary exhibited polycystic changes;Compared with the model group,TSH level in the BZYQ-L group rats decreased(P<0.05),FSH,T,AMH levels decreased(P<0.05),in the BZYQ-M group TPOAb,TSH levels decreased(P<0.05),FSH,LH,T,AMH levels significantly decreased(P<0.05),BZYQ-H group TPOAb,TGAb,TSH levels significantly decreased(P<0.05),FSH,LH,T,AMH levels significantly decreased(P<0.05),with the greatest improvement and significantly better than selenium yeast group(P<0.05).CONCLUSIONS:BZYQ granule could regulate the thyroid function of EAT rats, reduce thyroid antibody titers, then act on the ovarian function, regulate hormone disorders, and alleviate the pathological damage of rat's ovarian tissues. The effect of high dose Buzhong Yiqi granule is the best. 展开更多

Objective:To investigate the role of Portulaca oleracea(POL)in promoting revascularization and reepithelization as well as inhibiting iron aggregation and inflammation of deep tissue pressure injury(DTPI).Methods:The hydroalcoholic extract of POL(P)and aqueous phase fraction of POL(PD)were prepared based on maceration and liquid–liquid extraction. The number of new blood vessels and VEGF-A expression level were assessed using H&E stain and Western blot on injured muscle to examine the role of POL different extracts in vascularization. The iron distribution and total elemental iron of injured muscle were detected using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry(ICP-MS)and Perls’staining to determine whether POL extracts can inhibit the iron accumulation.Besides, the ability of POL extracts to promote wound healing by combining re-epithelization time, inflammation degree and collagen deposition area were comprehensively evaluated. Results:In vitro,we observed a significant increase in HUVEC cell viability, migration rate and the number of the tube after P and PD treatment(P<0.05).In vivo, administration of P and PD impacted vascularization and iron accumulation on injured tissue, evident from more new blood vessels, higher expression of VEGF-A and decreased muscle iron concentration of treatment groups compared with no-treatment groups(P<0.05).Besides,shorter re-epithelization time, reduced inflammatory infiltration and distinct collagen deposition were associated with administration of P and PD(P<0.05).Conclusion:POL extract administration groups have high-quality wound healing, which is associated with increased new blood vessels, collagen deposition and re-epithelization,along with decreased iron accumulation and inflammatory infiltration. Our results suggest that that POL extract is beneficial to repair injured muscle after ischemia–reperfusion, highlighting the potential of POL in the DTPI treatment. 展开更多
