FIBER RESOURCE AVAILABILITY FOR THE CHINESE PULP AND PAPER INDUSTRY

Total P & B production in China's Mainland has been reported to be 37.8 million metric tons for the year 2002. A goal of 50-60 million metric tons of total P & B production has been set for the year 2010. By that time, domestic virgin woodpulp production will be doubled, with pulpwood supply from plantations in the country and supplemented by imported woodchips and pulpwoods. Imported market woodpulp will still play an important role in the Chinese industry. Non-wood fibers will stay as an indispensable sustaining fibers source for the growth of the Chinese industry. Increases in reed, bamboo and wheat straw pulping capacities will be expected within the years. Efforts will have to be taken for the promotion of domestic wastepaper recycling, hoping to have the recycling rate upgraded to 35-38% by the end of this decade. Aside from the intensified domestic wastepaper recovery, a 6-8% average annual increase in wastepaper importation will be expected in the foreseeable future.

Isolated intestinal neurofibromatous proliferations in the absence of associated systemic syndromes

Gastrointestinal tract involvement by neurofi bromatous lesions is rare and occurs most frequently as one of the systemic manifestations of generalized neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). In this setting, the lesions may manifest as focal scattered neurofi bromas or as an extensive diffuse neural hyperplasia designated ganglioneuromatosis. Occasionally, such lesions may be the initial sign of NF1 in patients without any other clinical manifestations of the disease. Rarely, cases of isolated neurofi bromatosis of the large bowel with no prior or subsequent evidence of generalized neurofi bromatosis have been documented. We present the case of a 52 year-old female with abdominal pain and alternating bowel habits. Colonoscopic evaluation revealed multiple small polyps in the cecum and the presence of nodular mucosa in the colon and rectum. Pathologic evaluation of the biopsies from the cecum, descending colon, sigmoid colon, and rectum revealed tangled fascicles of spindle cells expanding the lamina propia leading to separation of the intestinal crypts. Immunohistochemical stains helped confirm the diagnosis of diffuse intestinal neurofibromatosis. A thorough clinical evaluation failed to reveal any stigmata of generalized neurofibromatosis. This case represents a rare presentation of isolated intestinal neurofi bromatosis in a patient without classic systemic manifestations of generalized neurofibromatosis and highlights the need in such cases for close clinical follow-up to exclude neurofibromatosis type Ⅰ or multiple endocrine neoplasia type Ⅱ.

Species and Distribution of Mangroves in the Fujian Coastal Area

On the basis of an investigation on the mangroves in Fujian from November 1998 to January 1999, the species composition, area, distribution, artificial afforestation of mangroves and the factors restricting the development of mangroves in Fujian are discussed in the paper. Some suggestions on how to develop mangroves in Fujian have been put forward.

Pay-based Screening Mechanism: Personnel Selection in the View of Economics Theory

Based on economic theories,the paper studies the personnel selection at the asymmetric job market using signaling and screening model.The authors hold the opinion that an organization can screen the candidates'signaling based on the self-selection principle by providing an apropriate compensation choice.A pay-based screening mechanism is qualified applicants and retain the excellent applicants.

Institutions,policies and soil degradation:theoretical examinations and case studies in Southeast China

Southeast China is one of the severe soil degradation areas in China. This paper theoretically examines the impact of some important institutional arrangements and policies, like land management pattern, the rural off-farm employment, land property change and changes in prices of agricultural products, on soil degradation in this area. It further conducts some case studies to confirm the potential relationship between the institutions & policies and soil degradation, applying the surveyed and the second hand data. The paper at last makes some conclusions and proposes some suggestions on how to promote soil conservation by improving the ways of policy decision-making and the effects of policies on land use.

Analytical Studies on the Variations of the Antarctic Ozone Layer

The Antarctic ozone hole which was discovered in the mid 1980s has caused much attention from the scientists and politicians throughout the world.For the formation of the Antarctic ozone hole, most scientists believe that the man-made chemical materials such as CFCs etc. are main cause. On the other hand, the electrochemistry-dynamics theory presented by Wei (Guang Ming Daily Dec. 11 ,1990) two years ago has also caused some attention.In the paper the data of ozone, solar activity meteorology over Antarctica have been used for statistical analytical studies. Our results present some new evidence to support Wei's theory. However the influence of the human activities can never be slighted.

Influencing program satisfaction for undergraduate students in STEM areas: The impact of interdisciplinary features, disciplinary connectedness, faculty support, and examination difficulty

Ensuring program satisfaction for undergraduate students in the areas of science,technology,engineering and mathematics(STEM)matters in student retention and education quality improvement.This study explores how four rarely examined variables support from faculty members,interdisciplinary features of STEM program courses,disciplinary connectedness of STEM program core courses,and examination difficulty impact Chinese STEM undergraduates’program satisfaction.With data from 619 Chinese STEM undergraduates,structural equation modeling shows that course satisfaction partially mediates the impact of support from faculty members on program satisfaction,while fully mediating that of interdisciplinary features of STEM program courses and disciplinary connectedness of STEM program core courses on program satisfaction.Examination difficulty exerts no significant impact on program satisfaction neither directly nor indirectly.Support from faculty members impact course satisfaction significantly stronger for junior and senior students than for freshmen and sophomores,while interdisciplinary features of STEM program courses impact course satisfaction stronger for freshmen and sophomores than for juniors and seniors.The study ends with practical implications for the higher education reform in relevant areas.

Mechanics Model to Determine Swelling Potential of Expansive Soils

The factors influencing on soil expansion are reviewed in the paper. A mechanics model to determine swelling potential of expansive soils is presented. The mechanics model is based on the softening of expansive1 soil following absorption of water. The constitutive relationships of the mechanics model include the relationship among swelling under free load, swelling under load, and vertical pressure, and the relationship of swelling under free loading and swelling pressure. A concept of additional compression modulus is introduced and the method determining the modulus is proposed. Finally, the predicted results of swelling potential using the mechanics model compare well with the measured data.

Effects of Second Order Scattered Wave in Stratified Ocean

By using the theories on Stokes multicolored water waves and taking the two- layer ocean as a basic model of stratified ocean, the paper analyzes the problems related to the effects of the nonlinear water wave on offshore structures. A mathematical expression is presented to describe second order wave radiation conditions. Using integral principle, the analytical integral solutions are given to evaluate second order scattered wave loads on general vertical circular cylinders in the two-layer ocean, and the special recurrence formulas for infinite integrals over free and stratified surfaces are derived.

Recent Advances in Dynamical Extra-Seasonal to Annual Climate Prediction at IAP/CAS

Recent advances in dynamical climate prediction at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IAP/CAS) during the last five years have been briefly described in this paper. Firstly, the second generation of the IAP dynamical climate prediction system (IAP DCP-Ⅱ) has been described, and two sets of hindcast experiments of the summer rainfall anomalies over China for the periods of 1980-1994 with different versions of the IAP AGCM have been conducted. The comparison results show that the predictive skill of summer rainfall anomalies over China is improved with the improved IAP AGCM in which the surface albedo parameterization is modified. Furthermore, IAP DCP-II has been applied to the real-time prediction of summer rainfall anomalies over China since 1998, and the verification results show that IAP DCP-II can quite well capture the large scale patterns of the summer flood/drought situations over China during the last five years (1998-2002). Meanwhile, an investigation has demonstrated the importance of the atmospheric initial conditions on the seasonal climate prediction, along with studies on the influences from surface boundary conditions (e.g., land surface characteristics, sea surface temperature). Certain conclusions have been reached, such as, the initial atmospheric anomalies in spring may play an important role in the summer climate anomalies, and soil moisture anomalies in spring can also have a significant impact on the summer climate anomalies over East Asia. Finally, several practical techniques (e.g., ensemble technique, correction method, etc.), which lead to the increase of the prediction skill for summer rainfall anomalies over China, have also been illustrated. The paper concludes with a list of critical requirements needed for the further improvement of dynamical seasonal climate prediction.

Growth inhibitory effect of 4-phenyl butyric acid on human gastric cancer cells is associated with cell cycle arrest

AIM: To investigate the growth effects of 4-phenyl butyric acid (PBA) on human gastric carcinoma cells and their mechanisms. METHODS: Moderately-differentiated human gastric carcinoma SGC-7901 and lowly-differentiated MGC-803 cells were treated with 5, 10, 20, 40, and 60 μmol/L PBA for 1-4 d. Cell proliferation was detected using the MTT colorimetric assay. Cell cycle distributions were examined using flow cytometry.RESULTS: The proliferation of gastric carcinoma cells was inhibited by PBA in a doseand time-dependent fashion. Flow cytometry showed that SGC-7901 cells treated with low concentrations of PBA were arrested at the G0/G1 phase, whereas cells treated with high concentrations of PBA were arrested at the G2/M phase. Although MGC-803 cells treated with low concentrations of PBA were also arrested at the G0/G1 phase, cells treated with high concentrations of PBA were arrested at the S phase. CONCLUSION: The growth inhibitory effect of PBA on gastric cancer cells is associated with alteration of the cell cycle. For moderately-differentiated gastric cancer cells, the cell cycle was arrested at the G0/G1 and G2/M phases. For lowly-differentiated gastric cancer cells, the cell cycle was arrested at the G0/G1 and S phases.

Restorating marine coastal ecosystem health as a new goad for integrated catchment management in Tolo Harbour,Hong Kong,China

The paper demonstrates why it is necessary to take the restoration of marine coastal ecosystem health as a new goal for integrated catchment management, in coastal area of the Tolo Harbour. The present goal of integrated catchment management (ICM) in the Tolo Harbour is to meet with Water Quality Objectives. The performance of an ICM plan, Tolo Harbour Action Plan (THAP), is evaluated by using marine coastal ecosystem health indicators including stress indicators and responses indicators. Since the implementation of THAP in 1988, some significant reduction in pollution loading has been observed - reduction of 83 % of BOD load and 82 % of TN between 1988 and 1999. There has been an improvement in the health state of Tolo Harbour marine coastal ecosystem as evidenced in the trends of the physical, chemical and biological indicators, although some reverse fluctuations in some periods exist. Delay Analysis and Formulation Inference of Signalized Intersection for Traffic Congestion Conditions

Vehicle delay is an important measure to evaluate the signal timings of signalized intersections.When optimization the signal control parameters, delays of vehicles from all approach directions of an intersection should be considered. Based on the analysis of the vehicle delay on an approach of intersection, directed against the typical condition of a congested intersection-over-saturated condition, the paper has analyzed and inferred the intersection delay dynamic formulation, and has established the relation between intersection delay,the signal timings, vehicle arrival rate and the queue lengths, and that provides useful information for understanding vehicle delay of signalized intersection and for establishing performance index function of signal timing optimization.

A PRIMARY OBSERVATION OF TPA EFFECT ON SSV-NIH3T3 CELLS IN SERUM-FREE MEDIUM

The effect of TPA, a potent tumor promoter, on SSV-NIH3T3 cells in serum-free medium was investigated. TPA stimulated DNA synthesis of SSV-NIH3T3 cells on the third day of culture in SFM. In SDS-PAGF of medium conditioned by TPA-treated SSV-NIH3T3 cells (in SFM+TPA), the amounts of four proteins of 31.0 Kd, 28.5 Kd, 25.5 Kd and 13.5 Kd strikingly increased over that of non-TPA-treated counterpart (in SFM). The PDGF-like activity was also detected in CM of SFM+TPA. When insulin and EGF were drown off the SFM+TPA (SFM-Ins-EGF+TPA), TPA lost its ability to stimulate DNA synthesis of SSV-NIH3T3 cells on the third day and SDS-PAGE of the conditioned medium showed that the amounts of the four proteins noted above grately reduced. However, cells in SFM-Ins-EGF+TPA were in almost the same growth condition as cells in complete SFM+TPA on the third day of culture. Results were discussed in the paper.

Heating and Life Problem of High Power Density Induction Motor

An induction motor with its speed modulated by frequency features wide transfer speed range, high systematic efficiency, simple structure and long life, and it therefore becomes one of the best driving motors used in electrical vehicles. The present research trend of it is high power, high speed, high efficiency and long life. How to meet the above requirements by using the electromagnetic design, structure design and heat design, becomes a matter that needs to be resolved now. In this paper, the characters of the motor in operation are analyzed, all kinds of factors that relate to life are laid out, its heating and loss are discussed and analyzed.The key reasons affecting the motor life are presented, and different characters of a high induction motor are compared with these of a general induction motor. A design idea is described, that is: we should consider how to improve the efficiency and reliability as well as how to reduce the heating by changing the electromagnet,structure, dissipation and operation of the motor. How to reduce its losses and to improve its dissipation has been presented in the paper.

Numerical Study on Dry Deposition Processes in Canopy Layer

A coupling model between the canopy layer(CL) and atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) for the study of dry deposition velocity is developed. The model consists of six parts: chemical species conservation equation including absorptive factor; the species uptake action including detailed vertical variation of absorptive element in CL; momentum exchange in CL which is represented by a first-order closure momentum equation with an additional larger-scale diffusive term; momentum exchange in ABL which is described by a complete set of the ABL turbulent statistic parameters; absorptivity (or solubility or reflection) at the surface including effects of the physical and chemical characters of the species, land type, seasonal and diurnal variations of the meteorological variables; and deposition velocity derived by distributions of the species with height in CL. Variational rules of the concentration and deposition velocity with both height and time are simulated with the model for both corn and forest canopies. Results predicted with the bulk deposition velocity derived in the paper consist well with experimental data.

COP 28: Challenge of coping with climate crisis

The 28th Conference of Parties(COP 28)of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change(UNFCCC)is being held in Dubai,United Arab Emirates,from November 30 to December 12,2023,with the participation of over 160 world leaders(Figure 1).The tone of the COP 28 is set by the observation that,clearly,the nationally determined contributions related to CO_(2) emission reduction are not on track to curb the temperature rise as per the Paris Agreement.In order to hold the increase in global mean temperature to well below 2℃ above the pre-industrial level and to pursue efforts to limit the warming to 1.5℃,there is a need for ratcheting up ambition for near-term climate action.

THE DESIGN AND DATA PROCESSING OF THE SAMPLING SURVEY OF CHILDREN'S SITUATION IN CHINA, 1987

In July of 1987, the Sampling Survey of Children's Situation was conducted in 9 provincesautonomous regions of China. A stratified two--stage cluster sampling plan was designed for thesurvey. The paper presents the methods of stratification, selecting n=2 PSU's (cities/counties) withunequal probabilities without replacement in each stratum and selecting residents/village committeein each sampled city/county. All formulae of estimating population characteristics (especiallypopulation totals and the ratios of two totals), and estimating variances of those estimators aregiven. Finally, we analyse the precision of the survey preliminarily from the result of dataprocessing.
