The role of drinking in new and existing friendships across high school settings

We use 9 Add Health high schools with longitudinal network data to assess whether adolescent drinkers choose friends who drink, prefer friends whose friends drink, if selection differs between new and existing friendships, and between schools. Utilizing dynamic social network models that control for friend influences on individual alcohol use, the results show that drinkers do not strongly prefer friends who drink. Instead, they favor close friends whose friends’ drink, suggesting that alcohol matters for selection on the social groups and environments that friends connect each other to. The role of alcohol use differs by whether friendships are new or existing, however, with bridging connections being less stable. Moreover, selection processes, and the implications of alcohol use for friendship, vary in important ways between schools. 展开更多

Simultaneously imposed challenges of highvoltage insulation,high dv/dt,highswitching frequency,fast protection,and thermal management associated with the adoption of 10 kV SiC MOSFET,often pose nearly insurmountable barriers to potential users,undoubtedly hindering their penetration in mediumvoltage(MV)power conversion.Key novel technologies such as enhanced gatedriver,auxiliary power supply network,PCB planar dcbus,and highdensity inductor are presented,enabling the SiCbased designs in modular MV converters,overcoming aforementioned challenges.However,purely substituting SiC design instead of Sibased ones in modular MV converters,would expectedly yield only limited gains.Therefore,to further elevate SiCbased designs,novel highbandwidth control strategies such as switchingcycle control(SCC)and integrated capacitorblocked transistor(ICBT),as well as highperformance/highbandwidth communication network are developed.All these technologies combined,overcome barriers posed by stateoftheart Si designs and unlock system level benefits such as very high power density,highefficiency,fast dynamic response,unrestricted line frequency operation,and improved power quality,all demonstrated throughout this paper. 展开更多

We study the response of a composite beam(unimorph)with a piezomagnetic layer and a piezoelectric semiconductor layer under a transverse magnetic field.A one-dimensional model for coupled bending and extension of the beam is derived from the three-dimensional theory.A simple and analytical solution of the model is obtained,showing that various electromechanical fields develop in the beam through piezomagnetic and piezoelectric couplings as well as semiconduction.In particular,the mobile charges in the semiconductor layer redistribute themselves under the magnetic field.A coupling coefficient is defined to describe the strength of this magneto-semiconduction coupling.The effects of physical and geometric parameters on the fields and the coupling coefficient are examined.The results are fundamental to piezotronics when magnetic effects are involved. 展开更多

Lignin fractionation and depolymerization generates heterogeneous streams of aromatic compounds and conversion of aromatic compounds into valuable products,but it is not efficient.Many microbes in nature have evolved metabolic path-ways to convert complex lignin polymers into aromatic compounds and transform these aromatic compounds into central intermediates for bioproduct synthesis.The objective of this paper is to review the recent process development of lignin bioconversion into aromatic compounds and bioproducts.Lignin structural and molecular changes during fractionation and depolymerization are presented.Subsequent lignin conversion into aromatic compounds by upper pathways and further converted into central metabolites and bioproducts via lower pathways are emphasized.In particular,enzymes and mediator systems to enhance lignin conversion and key intermediates in lignin catabolic pathways are discussed.Strategies to enhance bioproduct formation through lignin valorization are summarized. 展开更多

Herein we consider the existence of solutions to second-order, two-point boundary value problems (BVPs) for systems of ordinary differential inclusions. Some new Bernstein-Nagumo conditions are presented that ensure a priori bounds on the derivative of solutions to the differential inclusion. These a priori bound results are then applied, in conjunction with appropriate topological methods, to prove some new existence theorems for solutions to systems of BVPs for differential inclusions. The new conditions allow of the treatment of systems of BVPs without growth restrictions. 展开更多
