Clinically, it is mainly characterized by arthralgia, swelling, and motor impairment. Since the knee joint is the load-bearing joint of the human body, and is susceptible to trauma, gonitis tends to have the highest morbidity in the four limbs, which manifests itself arthritis of patella and femur at the early stage; narrowness or disappearance of the medial joint space at the mid stage; and damage of the cartilage accompanied with flexion deformity at the late stage. In recent years, based on the experience of Prof. Cao Yiming, the author has treated 47 cases of gonitis by combined use of Chinese drugs and acupuncture, and obtained satisfactory therapeutic results as reported in the following. 展开更多

Objective: To observe the effect of blood-letting puncture at Twelve Well-Points of Hand on consciousness and heart rate in patients with early apoplexy. Method: Under observation were patients with disturbance of consciousness within 3 days after the apoplectic seizure. The patients were divided into a large injury team, a moderate injury team and a mild injury team. Each team was again randomly divided into a puncture group and a control group, with routine treatment in both groups but bloodletting puncture only in the puncture group. Quantitative changes in consciousness, blood pressure and heart rate of the patients were observed. Result: Blood-letting puncture at Twelve Well-Points of Hand can improve the consciousness and raise the systolic pressure in patients of the mild injury team, and accelerate the heart rate in all the patients in the puncture group. Conclusion: Blood-letting puncture at Twelve Well-Points of Hand can improve the consciousness of patients with brain injury in small area. 展开更多

In order to observe the therapeutic effects of Huatan Yigan Decoction (化痰益肝汤 Decoction for resolving phlegm and replenishing the liver) on antidiabetic-induced hepatopathy, 129 cases were divided into two groups, 72 cases in the treatment group were administrated with Huatan Yigan Decoction and 57 cases in the control group with the liver-protecting drugs. Their liver function, plasma prothrombin time (PT), blood urea nitrogen and symptoms of the patients before and after treatment were observed during the three therapeutic courses. Results: The total effective rate and cured rate of the treatment group manifested an obvious difference in comparison with those of the control group (P<0.05 or P<0.01). Even though the liver function, blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and symptoms in both groups were improved markedly, these indicators in the treatment group were improved more markedly than those in control group (P<0.01). No adverse effect was found during the treatment. Conclusion: Huatan Yigan Decoction shows a repair action on hepatic injury. 展开更多

BACKGROUND: In the rehabilitation of stroke patients, clinicians usually concentrate on motor problems, such as spasm of limbs and restriction of joint motion, while sensory and perceptive problems are almost always neglected, although they are just as important. One such area is the sensory disorder. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the motor function and activities of daily living in stroke patients with and without sensory disorders after treatment of integrated western and Chinese medicine. DESIGN: A non-randomized synchronically controlled trial. SETTING: First Affiliated Hospital of Tianjin College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. PARTICIPANTS: Totally 500 stroke inpatients were selected from the Department of Acupuncture and Massage, the First Affiliated Hospital of Tianjin College of Traditional Chinese Medicine from January 2003 to December 2004. They all had suffered from stroke in the last 4 weeks and accompanied by sensory disorder of the ipsilateral limb to different severity. The patients were all accorded with the Diagnostic and Efficacy Evaluative Standards for Stroke (in trial) set by the Encephalopathy Emergency Assistant Group, the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 1995, and they were diagnosed by imaging examination. The patients were stratified into sensory disorder group (n =220) and normal sense group (n =280). Informed consent for the detected items and therapeutic program was obtained from the relatives of all the participants. The study was approved by the hospital ethical committee. METHODS: All the patients were treated with acupuncture of Xing Nao Kai Qiao for restoring consciousness and inducing resuscitation, assisted by traditional Chinese medicine and western medicine specific to corresponding symptoms. The therapeutic principles were restoring consciousness and inducing resuscitation, nourishing liver and kidney, and dredging meridian. In addition, the patients were given western medical treatments for decreasing intracranial pressure, thrombolysis, reducing blood viscosity, anticoagulation, anti-arteriosclerosis, ameliorating microcirculation, also administrated with activator for nerve cells. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: (1) The severity of motor function deficit was evaluated using clinical neurological deficit score for stroke patients set by the Fourth National Academic Meeting for Cerebrovascular Disease in 1995; (2) The activities of daily living was evaluated with Barthel Index, the higher the score, the better the independence, and the less the dependence. RESULTS: All the 500 stroke patients were involved in the final analysis of results. (1) The neurological deficit scores before treatment had no significant difference between the two groups (P 〉 0.05), but the scores after treatment were significantly decreased as compared with those before treatment in both groups (t =6.59, 12.43, P 〈 0.01). The neurological deficit score after treatment in the normal sense group was significantly lower than that in the sensory disorder group (t =1.63, P 〈 0.05). (2) The scores of activities of daily living after treatment were significantly increased as compared with those before treatment in both groups (t =16.03, 25.10, P 〈 0.01). The scores of activities of daily living in the normal sense group were higher than those in the sensory disorder group both before and after treatment (t =6.07, 14.26, P 〈 0.05). CONCLUSION: Sensory disorders have obvious negative effects on the recovery of motor function and activities of daily living of stroke patients. 展开更多

The brain is the sea of marrow, stores the cerebral spirit and dominates all the life activities of the human body, which are the basic TCM knowledge about the brain. Based on this knowledge, the pathogenesis of climacteric syndrome is considered as consumption and deficiency of kidney-essence, and incoordination between the brain and kidney. The principle of acupuncture treatment should be soothing the mind and tonifying the kidney. 展开更多

Depressive syndrome is a common complication in cerebral vascular accidents (CVA), which accounts for 70% of the complications. A mild case of the syndrome is marked by grief, sleeping disturbance, weakened mental activities, worry, loss of interest, and irritability. A severe case may have worse symptoms and signs, except the above mentioned ones, such as anxiety, reduced appetite, hallucination, delusion, desperation, etc. The author has adopted acupuncture to treat depressive syndromes after CVA with good therapeutic result as reported in the following. 展开更多

In order to investigate the analgesic effect of needling at "Sitian" points for the nerve root-involved cervical spondylopathy, 68 cases of the nerve root-involved cervical spondylopathy were randomly divided into a treatment group of 46 cases treated by needling at "Sitian" points, and a control group of 22 cases treated by needling at cervical Jiaji points. After 2 therapeutic courses, the therapeutic effects were evaluated by using the visual analogue scale (VAS) and the semeiographic format. The results showed that the markedly effective rate was 78.3% and 54.5%, respectively in the treatment group and the control group, and the difference between the two groups was of significance (P<0.05). It can be concluded that needling at "Sitian" points can bring about a better therapeutic effect on the improvement of clinical symptoms, physical signs and pain than that of the needling at the cervical Jiaji points. 展开更多

The consciousness-restoring method and the conventional method of acupuncture were used for treatment of 92 cases of apoplexy at the convalescent stage. They were randomly divided into 2 groups: the consciousness-restoring group (50 cases), and the conventional group (42 cases). The therapeutic results show that the cure rates in the former and latter groups are 43% and 16.67% respectively. The markedly effective and effective rates in the former group are significantly higher than that in the latter group. The experimental results demonstrate that there is remarkable improvement in the majority of criteria of blood rheology, blood lipid, micro-circulation and thrombus formation in vitro, in the former group, and the degree and extent of improvement are markedly better than the latter group. 展开更多

Bioelectricity of the affected muscles at acute stage, recovery stage and sequel state in 93 cases of peripheral facial paralysis was observed with EMG. Pathological potential or motor potential was found to be reduced to varying degrees in all the affected muscles. After treatment by point-through-point acupuncture, myodynamia recovered fairly rapidly, EMG showed obvious changes, pathological potential decreased, and the normal motor unit potential increased remarkably. Comparative analysis of EMG before and after acupuncture indicated that point-through-point acupuncture had an obvious therapeutic effect on the disease. It was also very significant that EMG was used in diagnosing various stages of peripheral facial paralysis, evaluation of prognosis and guidance in clinical 展开更多
