STUDY ON PATHOGENIC MECHANISM OF EMOTIONS IN TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE—An Observation of Hydrogen Peroxide Releasing Function of Celiac Macrophages in Rats Under Stress State

The hydrogen peroxide releasing function of macrophages in rats under the stress state wasobserved with the animal model of“excessive anger impairing the liver”.The resultsshowed that the volume of hydrogen peroxide released from the macrophages in rats wasdecreased,while the corticosterone level in plasma increased after stress.It indicates thatstimulation of harmful emotions could cause inhibition of immunoreaction of the organism,which might be related to the enhancement in excitability of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis and hypersecretion of glucocorticoid hormone.

Biological Evaluation of ChuangYuLing Dressing—A Multifunctional Medicine Carrying Biomaterial

The safety of Chuangyuling (CYL) dressing—a multifunctional medicine carrying biomaterial was evaluated in order to provide foundation for the application of CYL as material used in the wound healing. The traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) extract solution was compounded with scaffolds (gelatin and Bletilla hyacinthine gum), and then frozen and dried to form spongy and porous material CYL. According to the standard of biological evaluation of medical devices that was instituted by the ministry of health of China \, the biological evaluation of CYL dressing was conducted. The results showed that all the contents of biological evaluation test consisting of acute toxicity, skin irritation, sensitization and cytotoxicity met the requirement of standards. It was concluded that the biomaterial carrying TCM (CYL dressing) is safe for application of wound healing.

Study on Action of Acupuncture on Ventromedial Nucleus of Hypothalamus in Obese Rats

Effects of acupuncture on the spontaneous discharge of nerve cells and levels of monoamine neurotransmitters in ventromedial nucleus of hypothalamus (VMH) of the obese rats were investigated. Results indicated that the levels of tyrosine (Tyr) and dopamine (DA) were lowered, the levels of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) and 5-hydoxyindole acetic acid (5-HIAA) increased, and the frequency of the spontaneous discharge of nerve cells in VMH lowered in the obese rat group as compared with the normal group. When acupuncture obtained the effect of weight reduction, the frequency of spontaneous discharges of nerve cells in VMH were markedly increased, and the levels of Tyr, DA and tryptamine (Typ) and 5-HT/5-HIAA ratio elevated, and the 5-HT level lowered. It is suggested that the virtuous regulative action of acupuncture on VMH might be one of the key factors in acupuncture for weight reduction.

Effect of single-use versus combined-use moschus and diazepam on expression of amino acid neurotransmitters in the rat corpus striatum

The present study analyzed expressional changes of excitatory neurotransmitters and inhibitory neurotransmitters in the rat corpus striatum after single-use and combined-use diazepam and Chinese herb moschus. The influence of moschus on the central nervous system was analyzed, in particular whether moschus increased penetration of other drugs into the brain. Reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography, which included pre-column derivation with orthophthaladehyde detection, showed varied increased levels of excitatory neurotransmitters, including aspartate and glutamate, and inhibitory neurotransmitters, including glycine and Y-aminobutyric acid, in the corpus striatum after treatment with moschus alone, diazepam alone, or a combination of both. Compared with the diazepam group, aspartate levels significantly decreased at 30 and 60-105 minutes after combined treatment with moschus, while glutamate significantly increased at 45 and 75-105 minutes, glycine levels significantly increased at 105 minutes, and γ-aminobutyric acid increased at 30 and 75-105 minutes. These findings suggested that moschus increased the inhibition effects of diazepam on the brain.

Effects of Moxa-Cone Moxibustion at Guanyuan on Erythrocytic Immunity and Its Regulative Function in Tumor-Bearing Mice

In the sarcoma S180 ascitic mice, the effects of moxa-cone moxibustion at Guanyuan (CV 4) on erythrocytic immunity and its regulative function were investigated. The results indicated that moxibustion at Guanyuan (CV 4) could significantly increase the decreased erythrocytic C3b receptor rosette forming rate (RBC-C3bRR), lower the raised erythrocytic immunocomplex rosette forming rate (RBC-ICR, P<0.05 or P<0.01), increase the decreased activity of erythrocytic immuno-accelerative factor, and reduce the increased activity of erythrocytic immunosuppressive factor (P<0.05) in the tumor-bearing mice. This suggests that moxibustion at Guanyuan (CV 4) can strengthen erythrocytic immunity and promote its regulative function.

An Analysis of Therapeutic Effect of Drug Acupoint Application in 209 Cases of Allergic Asthma

Both therapies of traditional crude herb moxibustion and drug acupoint application were used in 209 cases of allergic asthma to compare their long-term and short-term therapeutic effects and to analyze the relationship between clinic therapeutic effects of both therapies and differential types of the disease. The results showed that the short-term total effective rate in the group of drug acupoint application was higher than that in the group of traditional crude herb moxibustion, the therapeutic effects of drug acupoint application being closely related to differential types. Analysis also shows the best short-term therapeutic effect was in the type of heat in the lung while the poorest effect in the type of deficiency of the kidney-yang.

Effect of Acupuncture on Free Radicals in Rats with Early Experimental Spinal Cord Injury

Effect of acupuncture on free radicals after spinal cord injury was observed in rats with experimental spinal cord injury (SCI). Results indicated that within 24 hours after SCI malondialdehyde (MDA) increased progressively, 2 hours after SCI it reached the peak; and the superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity decreased significantly at the same hours, the decrease being the most marked 2-6 hours after SCI. The MDA content in the acupuncture group was significantly lower (P<0.05) and the SOD activity higher (P<0.01) than that of the control group respectively. EFFECTS OF ACUPUNCTURE ON THE PITUITARYTHYROID AXIS IN RABBITS WITH FRACTURE

Purpose:To observe the effects of acupuncture on the pituitary-thyroid axis in rabbitswith fracture,Method:36 male rabbits with a 3-mm width experimental defect in themiddle segment of the left radius were randomly divided into the treatment group andcontrol group,and the changes in serum T3,T4 and TSH contents in different weekswere investigated.Results:Serum T3,T4 and TSH contents in the treatment group allwere higher than those in the control group,with statistically significant differences inthe contents of T4 and TSH in the second week and T3 content in the fourth week（P【0.01 or P【0.05）.Conclusion:The action of promoting union of fracture is possiblyrelated with the pituitary-thyroid axis.

EFFECTS OF ACUPUNCTURE ON THE LEVELS OF ENDOTHELIN,TXB_2,AND 6-Keto-PGF_(1a) IN APOPLEXY PATIENTS

In order to delve into the mechanism governing the treatment of apoplexy byacupuncture at yangming channel points as main points,we observed the changes inthe endothelin（ET）level in plasma,TXB2 and 6-Keto-PGF1α levels in urine inconvalescent apoplexy patients during acupuncture treatment.The results showed thatthe ET level in plasma in convalescent apoplexy patients was significantly higher thanthat in healthy subjects（P【0.05）,and the ET level in plasma in patients was decreasedafter one course of acupuncture treatment.It was found that before treatment theTXB2 level in urine in apoplexy patients was significantly higher than in healthysubjects,and the 6-Keto-PGF1α level in urine in the patients was significantly lowerthan that in healthy subjects,with an increased ratio of TXB2 to 6-Keto-PGF1α.Afteracupuncture treatment,the TXB2 level in urine was lowered with a decrease in theratio of TXB2 to 6-Keto-PGF1α.All this indicated that one of the mechanismsgoverning acupuncture treatment of apoplexy acupuncture at yangming channelpoints as main points was that acupuncture could produce therapeutic effects byadjusting the imbalance of important vaso-active substances,ET,TXA2,and PGI2.

Dried Rehmannia root protects against glutamate-induced cytotoxity to PC12 cells through energy metabolism-related pathways

Rehmannia has been shown to be clinically effective in treating neurodegenerative diseases; however, the neuroprotective mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we established a model of neurodegenerative disease using PC12 cytotoxic injury induced by glutamate. The cells were treated with 20 mM glutamate in the absence or presence of water extracts of dried Rehmannia root of varying concentrations（70%, 50% and 30%）. The different concentrations of Rehmannia water extract significantly increased the activity of glutamate-injured cells, reduced the release of lactate dehydrogenase, inhibited apoptosis, increased the concentrations of NADH, NAD and ATP in cells, ameliorated mitochondrial membrane potential, and reduced the levels of light chain 3. Taken together, our findings demonstrate that Rehmannia water extracts exert a cytoprotective effect against glutamate-induced PC12 cell injury via energy metabolism-related pathways.

Treatment of Nonspecific Chronic Prostatitis with Qian Lie Xian Yan Suppository in 104 Cases

Qian Lie Xian Yan Suppository (前列腺炎栓) was rectally applied to treat 104 patients with nonspecific chronic prostatitis ( damp-heat syndrome with blood stasis) in contrast to 30 patients treated with traditional Chinese drug Ye Ju Hua Shuan (野菊花栓Suppository of Flos Chrysanthemi Indici). The results show that chronic prostatitis is markedly improved by using Qian Lie Xian Yan suppository, with a short-term cure rate of 23.1% and a total effective rate of 84.6%, superior to that of the control group. The animal experiment indicates that Qian Lie Xian Yan suppository has better anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects, with an action of promoting blood circulation.

TREATMENT OF POSTAPOPLECTIC THALAMIC SPONTANEOUS PAIN BY ELECTROACUPUNCTURE AT HUATUOJIAJI POINTS

The authors have treated 30 cases of postapoplectic thalamic spontaneous pain (PTSP) byelectro-acupuncture at Huatuojiaji points (Extra), with the other 30 cases of PTSP treatedby oral administration of carbamazepine as the controls. The total effective rate was 90%in the acupuncture group, and 86.7% in the control group. The difference in the totaleffective rate between the two groups was not statistically significant (P】0.05), suggestingthat electroacupuncture at Huatuojiaji (Extra) is a better therapy for PTSP.
