Dengue is one of the most prominent tropical epidemic diseases present in the Rio de Janeiro city and Southeast part of Brazil, due to the widespread conditions of occurrence of the dengue vector, the mosquito Aedesaegypti, such as high-temperature days interlaced with afternoon or nocturnal rainstorms in summer. This work has the objective of investigating the relationships between variabilities of the El Ni?o-South Oscillation (ENSO) and greater epidemics of dengue in Rio de Janeiro city. To accomplish this goal, the analysis and signal decomposition by cross-wavelet transform (WT) was applied to obtain the cross variability associated with variations of power and phase of both signals by characteristic periods and along with the time series. Data considered in the analysis are (the decimal logarithm of normalized value) of the monthly available notifications of dengue worsening, provided by the public health system of Brazil, and the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) Ni?o 3.4 data, provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), in the period 2000-2017. A maximum cross-wavelet power close to 0.45 was obtained for the representative period of 1 year and also to periods between 3 and 4 years, associated with the positive phase of the SOI index (i.e. , La Ni?a) or with a transition to the positive phase. The evolution of the combined variability of SOI and dengue can be expressed by progressive differences in phase along the time, eventually resulting in yielding phases (i.e., La Niña-Dengue epidemic). 展开更多

Background/Objectives: Propatyl nitrate is a coronary vasodilator with immediate and prolonged action, indicated in the treatment and prevention of acute angina pectoris episodes. Methods: This was an open, self-paired comparative study performed at UNIFESO Medical School evaluating the clinical and laboratory results of treatment with propatyl nitrate in patients with chronic stable angina pectoris. Subjects received 10 mg of propatyl nitrate, at the dose of three sublingual tablets per day, to be taken at 8:00 A.M., 2:00 P.M., and 8:00 P.M. Subjects returned to the study center after 15 days of treatment for Visit 2 assessments, and at the end of the 30-day treatment period (Visit 3). Results: A total of 200 subjects were included in the study. There was a statistically significant reduction in blood pressure (p < 0.0001) and heart rate (p = 0.0001), but no change in respiratory rate (p = 0.23). Laboratory results did not vary throughout the treatment period. There was no significant change from pretreatment in the SAQ Physical Limitation scale (p = 0.7415). The Angina Stability, Angina Frequency, and Treatment Satisfaction, and Quality of Life scales showed a significant improvement from pretreatment (p < 0.0001). Adverse events were observed among 41 subjects at Visit 2 and 35 subjects at Visit 3. Conclusions: Propatyl nitrate was safe and effective in treating chronic stable angina pectoris over the course of the 30-day treatment period. Treatment with propatyl nitrate increased angina stability and reduced angina frequency while increasing treatment satisfaction and quality of life in the patient population evaluated. 展开更多

The Light Emitting Diode (LED) is a phototherapy equipment, poorly studied, which is able of acting on blood level and it has frequently appeared in clinical practice of physiotherapy to aid on skin rejuvenation, control inflammation and wound healing. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of LED on red blood cells through the spectrophotometer. This is an experimental study with a sample of 5 male Wistar rats weighting between 200 g and 350 g, randomly selected, anesthetized and 4 ml of blood was collected by cardiac puncture. The blood collected was divided into four groups, one control and three treated, these individually irradiated by blue LED (420 - 490 nm), green LED (515 - 570 nm) and red LED (620 - 680 nm) at an output of 3 watts, for 10 minutes and 5 cm apart from the surface of the blood, then it was analyzed by a spectrophotometer at 540 nm. The results were submitted to Anova and Post-roch Turkey (p < 0.05). All wavelengths tested produced hemolysis greater than the control in hypotonic solutions of NaCl (range 0.02 to 0.06 M) (p < 0.01). Only the band between 515 - 570 nm provides a higher hemolysis (range 0.06 to 0.1) when compared to the control group (p < 0.05). The irradiation of blood through the LED therapy was able to weaken the cell membrane of the red blood cells. It is likely that hemolysis does not bring harm the body, because as it is a local therapy, the amount of hemolysis that can be caused is small and it will induce the reproduction of new red blood cells, thus improving their physiological functions. 展开更多

This paper investigated the information about Ice sheet melt and Ozone hole variations during three solar cycles. After performing the inquiry on the data, the final results pointed out that both phenomena varying accord with Earth’s seasonality. The sea melt extension depends on the season and if the ocean waters are warmer around the polar caps. We checked the suggestion that anthropogenic perturbations could influence the variations in both phenomena. 展开更多

The formation and evolution of cosmic string wakes in the framework of a <i>f</i>(<i>R</i>) theory of gravity are investigated in this work. We consider a simple model in which baryonic matter flows past a cosmic string. We treat this problem in the Zel’dovich approximation. We compare our results with previous results obtained in the context of General Relativity and Scalar-Theories of Gravity. 展开更多
