Role of chromosomal instability and clonal heterogeneity in the therapy response of breast cancer cell lines

Objective:Chromosomal instability(CIN)is a hallmark of cancer characterized by cell-to-cell variability in the number or structure of chromosomes,frequently observed in cancer cell populations and is associated with poor prognosis,metastasis,and therapeutic resistance.Breast cancer(BC)is characterized by unstable karyotypes and recent reports have indicated that CIN may influence the response of BC to chemotherapy regimens.However,paradoxical associations between extreme CIN and improved outcome have been observed.Methods:This study aimed to 1)evaluate CIN levels and clonal heterogeneity(CH)in MCF7,ZR-751,MDA-MB468,BT474,and KPL4 BC cells treated with low doses of tamoxifen(TAM),docetaxel(DOC),doxorubicin(DOX),Herceptin(HT),and combined treatments(TAM/DOC,TAM/DOX,TAM/HT,HT/DOC,and HT/DOX)by using fluorescence in situ hybridization(FISH),and 2)examine the association with response to treatments by comparing FISH results with cell proliferation.Results:Intermediate CIN was linked to drug sensitivity according to three characteristics:estrogen receptorα(ERα)and HER2 status,pre-existing CIN level in cancer cells,and the CIN induced by the treatments.ERα+/HER2-cells with intermediate CIN were sensitive to treatment with taxanes(DOC)and anthracyclines(DOX),while ERα-/HER2-,ERα+/HER2+,and ERα-/HER2+cells with intermediate CIN were resistant to these treatments.Conclusions:A greater understanding of CIN and CH in BC could assist in the optimization of existing therapeutic regimens and/or in supporting new strategies to improve cancer outcomes.

Redesign and Optimization Study of Micro-Hydropower Plant in Manica Mozambique

The micro-hydropower has the technical capability of providing electricity to rural areas in Manica or other isolated place in Mozambique in currently not yet supplied with EDM (Mozambicam electricity Supply Company). Associated that, today more than 12 million of Mozambicans live below the poverty line including in non-electrified areas and most of these populations are rural people. The stochastic ARMA model and Neural Wavelet was built and fitted from the historical 49 years of hydrology predictions. The flow duration curve was plotted based on flow data with objective to find power potential that was 76.8 Kw.

ON THE CAUCHY PROBLEM FOR AW-RASCLE SYSTEM WITH LINEAR DAMPING

The existence of global BV solutions for the Aw-Rascle system with linear damping is considered.In order to get approximate solutions we consider the system in Lagrangian coordinates,then by using the wave front tracking method coupling with and suitable splitting algorithm and the ideas of[1]we get a sequence of approximate solutions.Finally we show the convergence of this approximate sequence to the weak entropic solution.

Foreign Language Learning at Tertiary Level in Mozambique

More than ever before, multilingualism is a key resource that opens the doors for participation in internationalisation and in the globalization process and participation in the knowledge society. As such, it is of outmost importance that governments consider language learning as an educational priority. Mozambique is no exception to this rule, as it has also already acknowledged the need not only to teach languages of wider communication such as English, French, and Portuguese, but also the Mozambican national languages. The present paper discusses the importance and value that is attached to multilingualism in Mozambique and focuses particularly on Foreign Language Teaching and Learning at tertiary level. This paper reports specifically on data collected through a questionnaire given to first year university students at Universidade Pedag6gica in Maputo, in June, 2008. In addition, it examines the university＇s language policy of providing English language teaching to first year students, focuses on some of the constraints that presently affect the development of productive and receptive multilingualism, and suggests ways of making foreign language learning more effective

Eretmochelys imbricata:Lessons to Learn from a Monitoring Program in the North of Mozambique

Monitoring programs for nesting turtles around the world have been important to build up a matrix of information for better comprehension of their behaviour and dispersion. The Western Indian Ocean has several monitoring programs that are being used to reveal migration routes, phylogenetic interconnections and nesting behaviour patterns. We determined the nesting parameters for 69 records of hawksbill turtles collected during the Vamizi Island monitoring program. We also determined carapace measurements parameters of the turtles caught by fishermen in the area and give some considerations to improve the conservation of this species. Results show that the island receives hawksbill females all year long. Vamizi is a small nesting ground for this species, with an incubation period of 60.9 ± 10.6 days and a high reproductive rate. The turtles’ carapace measurements (SCL 42.0 ± SD 9.0 cm) revealed the existence of young individuals, foraging near the island, and their vulnerability to the fishing practices. This study strongly defends the need to identify more developmental and nesting spots, to be protected near Vamizi, to establish a solid network of marine reserves and corridors in the north of the Mozambique Channel.

Relaxation Limit for Aw-Rascle System

We study the relaxation limit for the Aw-Rascle system of traffic flow. For this we apply the theory of invariant regions and the compensated compactness method to get global existence of Cauchy problem for a particular Aw-Rascle system with source, where the source is the relaxation term, and we show the convergence of this solutions to the equilibrium state.

Radicals and Kothe’s Conjecture for Skew PBW Extensions

The aim of this paper is to investigate different radicals(Wedderburn radical,lower nil radical,Levitzky radical,upper nil radical,the set of all nilpotent elements,the sum of all nil left ideals)of the noncommutative rings known as skew Poincare–Birkhoff–Witt extensions.We characterize minimal prime ideals of these rings and prove that the Kothe’s conjecture holds for these extensions.Finally,we establish the transfer of several ring-theoretical properties(reduced,symmetric,reversible,2-primal)from the coefficients ring of a skew PBW extension to the extension itself.
