Mobilization of Arsenic in Groundwater in the Southern Hanoi City (Vietnam) as Studied by Isotopic and Related Techniques

Sixteen samples of surface and groundwater from the most southern part of the Hanoi city (Vietnam) has been taken and analyzed for the soluble major ions, namely Na+, K+, , Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl-, , and arsenic as well as molybdenum content along with isotopic composition of deuterium and oxygen (δ2H and δ18O), tritium activity, and δ13C in DIC. The stable isotopic composition of groundwater indicates the water in that area is recharged from the local meteoric and theRed River’s water sources. The mean residence time of the groundwater should be before 60-ies of the past century as its 3H activity ranged from LOD of the analytical technique (0.4 TU) to 2.1 TU only implying that As would not be related to its recent application. The concentrations of As in the water samples is weakly correlated with those of Fe2+ (R2 = 0.08) but it strongly did with the concentrations of bicarbonate (R2 = 0.80). Thus, bicarbonate seems to liberate As adsorbed on hydrous ferric oxides (Hfo) into water through the displacement mechanism. The surface adsorption-desorption of As could be proven by a strong correlation between As and Mo concentrations (R2 = 0.77). The bicarbonate formation in groundwater was thought to be, partly, due to the bio-mineralization of natural organic matter (NOM) by bacteria followed by the dissolution of calcite and/or dolomite present in the sediments. Evidence for the NOM bio-mineralization was found in the close relationship between δ13C and the concentration of bicarbonate in water. Therefore, the mobilization of As in groundwater of bicarbonate type in the southern part of Hanoi city seems to be not only due to the reductive dissolution of the Hfo but the bicarbonate displacement also should be considered. 展开更多

Cross-sectional homogenization for full-core calculations of small and complex reactor configurations,such as research reactors,has been recently recognized as an interesting and challenging topic.This paper presents the development of a PARCS/Serpent model for the neutronics analysis of a research reactor type TRIGA Mark-II loaded with Russian VVR-M2 fuel(known as the Dalat Nuclear Research Reactor or DNRR).The full-scale DNRR model and a supercell model for a shim/safety rod and its surrounding fuel bundles with the Monte Carlo code Serpent 2 were proposed to generate homogenized fewgroup cross sections for full-core diffusion calculations with PARCS.The full-scale DNRR model with Serpent 2 was also utilized as a reference to verify the PARCS/Serpent calculations.Comparison of the effective neutron multiplication factors,radial and axial core power distributions,and control rod worths showed a generally good agreement between PARCS and Serpent 2.In addition,the discrepancies between the PARCS and Serpent 2 results are also discussed.Consequently,the results indicate the applicability of the PARCS/Serpent model for further steady state and transient analyses of the DNRR. 展开更多

The nano-gold layer formed on the platinum rotating disk electrode (nano-Au/Pt-RD) inherited the catalytic property for Cr(VI) reduction from platinum surface and owned the good features of nano-gold such as insensitivity with hydrogen ion, high surface area, augmenting diffusion of Cr(VI) and ability for self-assembling with 4-pyridine-ethanethiol (PET) through Au←S linkages, to form PET/nano-Au/Pt-RD electrode capable of accumulating Cr(VI) from sample. The obtained PET/ nano-Au/Pt-RD electrode showed an extreme sensitivity to Cr(VI). By using this electrode, 1.09 ng·L﹣1 was the detection limit of differential pulse adsorptive cathodic stripping voltammetry for Cr(VI) with the accumulation time of only 2 min. Moreover, this electrode was reproducible with 3.5% RSD for 30 times of Cr(VI) accumulating and stripping. In addition, this electrode was also selective for Cr(VI) determination, which was not almost interfered by other inorganic ions. 展开更多

Colloidal silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with particle size less than 10 nm and concentration of 2 mM/L (~200 mg/L) were synthesized by gamma Co-60 ray irradiation of Ag+/chitosan solutions with different chitosan concentration of 0.5%, 1% and 2% (w/v). Incorporation of AgNPs onto cotton fabric was carried out by padding method with 100% wet pick-up. The content of AgNPs deposited on cotton fabric and released from cotton fabric after repeated washing was determined by inductively couple plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES). The results indicated that cotton/AgNPs fabric made from padding into AgNPs solution with 0.5% - 1% chitosan was the best one of AgNPs adhesion ability on cotton fabric. Results on antibacterial activity against S. aureus showed that cotton/AgNPs fabric with AgNPs content more than 100 mg/kg exhibited highly antibacterial activity (η > 98%). The mechanical property (tensile strength and elongation) of cotton/AgNPs fabrics was almost unchanged in comparison with untreated cotton fabric. Thus, the resultant cotton/AgNPs fabric with highly antibacterial activity can be potentially used as bed drapes and/or patient uniforms in hospitals, etc. 展开更多

Oligochitosan (OC) with molecular weight Mw of 5000 g/mol was prepared by gamma Co-60 ray irradiation of chitosan solution. Nanosilica (nSiO2) with the size of 10 - 30 nm was synthesized by calcination of acid treated rice husk. The mixture of 1% OC - 1% nSiO2 was prepared by dispersion of nSiO2 in OC solution. The morphology of nSiO2 in the mixture of OC-nSiO2 was measured from images of transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The effect of foliar application of the mixture of OC-nSiO2 on the induction of resistance against anthracnose disease caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides fungus on chili fruits was investigated. Results indicated that foliar application of OC-nSiO2 with the concentration of 60 mg/l - 60 mg/l was found to be as the optimal treatment that reduced the disease severity on chili fruits to 22.2% compared with 90.0% of the control. Thus, OC-nSiO2 hybrid material could be considered as an effective biotic elicitor to prevent anthracnose disease infection for chili fruits. Furthermore, the prepared OC-nSiO2 hybrid material can also be used as an environmentally friendly agrochemical product for sustainable development of agriculture. 展开更多

Based on guides RG 1.109, RG 1.111 published by United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (USNRC), our research concentrates in assessing radiation doses caused by radioactive substances released from the nuclear power plant (NPP) Ninh Thuan 1 under the scenario of normal operation using software package NRCDose72 provided by the USNRC. The database including the released radioactive nuclides, meteorology, terrain, population and agricultural production activities have been collected and processed to build the input data for the model calculation. The wind rose distribution obtained from the meteorological data in a five-year period from 2009-2013 showed that the radioactive nuclides released to environment spread in two main wind directions which are North East and South West. The X/Q (s/m3) and D/Q (s/m2) qualities which are, respectively, the ratio of activity concentration to release rate and that of deposition density of radioactive nuclides to release rate were calculated within an area of 80 km radius from the NPP site using XOQDOQ. Population doses were calculated using GASPAR. The XOQDOQ and GASPAR are two specific softwares in NRCDose72 package. 展开更多

Lithium aluminate (LiAlO<sub>2</sub>) powder was synthesized by sol-gel with EDTA method. The resultant powders were characterized by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electronic Microscopy (SEM) techniques. In addition, several thermoluminescence properties of synthesized LiAlO<sub>2</sub> powder were reported. The results from X-ray diffraction (XRD), the powder prepared by sol-gel with EDTA method showed pure <em>γ</em>-phase when it was calcined at >900°C. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results show that the size of the lithium aluminate particles depended strongly on calcination temperature. The linearity is observed of synthesized LiAlO<sub>2</sub> powder by sol-gel with EDTA with regression coefficient (R<sup>2</sup>) is 0.9971. 展开更多

Cone-beam computed tomography(CBCT),a modern technique with many applications,is becoming increasingly important and essential in many areas of economics and life.CBCT equipment has been commercialized in both hardware and software.However,having a device system suitable for a specific group of objects will be the best.This work used Monte Carlo simulation to optimize the design of a Cone-beam Computed Tomography(CBCT)for lightweight and small-size casts.Factors affecting image quality such as radiation-source,flat-panel detector,and geometrical distance were investigated.Simulation results indicate that an X-ray generator with a focal spot size of 4×4µm^(2),high voltage of 240 kV,and a radiation intensity of 10^(13) photon/s with a flat panel CsI(Tl)detector of 0.3 mm thickness and a pixel size of 0.1–0.2 mm,is suitable for a CBCT to inspect small objects in industry.The Monte Carlo model was validated against experiments and to evaluate some characteristics of the existing system. 展开更多
