We present a comparative study on the C-H stretching vibrations at air/DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) interface with both the free-induction decay (FID) coherent vibrational dynamics and the sub-wavenumber high resolution sum-frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy measurements. In principle the frequency-domain and time-domain spectroscopic measurements should generate identical information for a given molecular system. However, when the molecular systems are with several coupled or overlapping vibrational modes, obtain- ing detailed spectroscopic and coherent dynamics information is not as straightforward and rather difficult from either the time-domain or the frequency domain measurements. For the case of air/DMSO interface that is with moderately complex vibrational spectra, we show that the frequency-domain measurement with sub-wavenumber high-resolution sum-frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy is probably more advantageous than the time- domain measurement in obtaining quantitative understanding of the structure and coherent dynamics of the molecular interface. 展开更多

Studies of non-metallic organic disinfectants on inactivation of avian influenza viruses

Six different kinds of non-metallic or organic disinfectants were obtained in this research study including “Neutral Electrolyzed Water”, “M22” organic disinfectant solution, Superoxy Food Wash disinfectant, Hydrogen Peroxide, Clorox Germicidal Bleach and Clidox-S. The effectiveness of these disinfectants was studied against various subtypes of avian influenza virus (AIV). The virus-disinfectant mixtures were prepared in serial dilutions of each disinfectant with a constant virus titer and incubated at ambient temperature in different time intervals for virus inactivation. The virus inactivation results were determined by virus recovery in embryonating chicken eggs. Among the six different kinds of nonmetallic disinfectants obtained for this research project, Neutral Electrolyzed Water, “M22” solution, Clorox Germicidal Bleach and Clidox-S were effectively inactivated AIV with appropriate working dilutions and reaction times. Superoxy Food Wash disinfectant and Hydrogen Peroxide were found having limited effect on virus inactivation with extended exposure times of more than 2 hours. These research findings provide scientific data to poultry industry with guidelines to select and use non-metallic organic disinfectants for poultry flock sanitation and disinfection to effectively prevent and control of avian influenza outbreaks. 展开更多

In recent years, Alzheimer’s disease has been clearly linked to the degradation of microtubules and microtubule-associated tau (τ) and β-amyloid (βA) proteins. Through an examination and evaluation of current literature, we assess the possible effects of the steroid hormones on τ hyperphosphorylation and the regulation of βA proteins and their influence on Alzheimer’s dementia and memory loss. We present a mechanism by which Alzheimer’s cases may be reduced or perhaps even prevented through the use of non-synthetic, steroid hormones prescribed in a cyclic dosing schedule that mimics the rhythmic, escalating and descending production normally observed in a reproductive female body. Given the ability of estrogen to prevent τ hyperphosphorylation and increase metabolism of the βA precursor protein, we propose the possibility of controlling both protein cycles through the exogenous application of estrogen and progesterone may help those patients with active disease as well as prevent the onset of Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases. 展开更多

Avian influenza (AI) virology surveillance is the most important method to monitor AI virus (AIV) in poultry so as to effectively prevent and control AI outbreaks. Monoclonal antibodies (MAb)-based assays are highly sensitive and specific for AIV detection, and much practical and economic for test-in-field or onsite. Many such assays have been developed and are still in developing since the H5N1 highly pathogenic AI (HPAI) outbreaks occurred in South East Asia in 2003. A MAb-based dot-enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) has been developed in our lab during late 1990s and early 2000s. Meanwhile, AIV H7 and H5 subtype specific-MAbs have been successfully developed in our laboratory to enhance the Dot-ELISA and other MAb-based assays for AIV detection. Production and purification of the H7 and H5 MAbs were made to provide essential reagents for Dot-ELISA and other immunoassays, and the current development of a novel Biosensor technique for rapid detection of AIV from clinical and field specimens. 展开更多

为全面了解中国科技期刊编辑对大模型技术的认知、应用现状及其他方面的影响,本研究向科技期刊编辑通过问卷星发放调研问卷,问卷包括国内外大模型技术和平台的认知情况、在期刊出版不同流程的应用情况,对大模型技术的需求、期望、风险... 为全面了解中国科技期刊编辑对大模型技术的认知、应用现状及其他方面的影响,本研究向科技期刊编辑通过问卷星发放调研问卷,问卷包括国内外大模型技术和平台的认知情况、在期刊出版不同流程的应用情况,对大模型技术的需求、期望、风险和担忧,以及对大模型技术的投入意愿。本次问卷共回收450份有效问卷,82.44%的调研对象表示对大模型技术有过了解,但比较了解和非常了解仅占16.67%。对于大模型平台的认知方面,国外的除ChatGPT外,其他平台/工具认知度非常低;国内的以文心一言、星火大模型为多。在科研型平台方面,国内的Aminer为认识较多的平台。在实践应用阶段,目前在稿件组织和采编、内容传播和知识服务环节相对较好,在编辑和生产出版环节应用相对较少。74.89%的编辑对于大模型技术保持乐观和非常乐观的态度,仅不到2%的编辑表示悲观。在编辑的各环节中,认为相对比较容易被替代的工作环节是排版生产与数据加工,最不易被替换的是同行评议与选题策划,但文字编辑与传播运营方面也有超过60%的认为是可以被大部分替代的。为应对大模型技术的影响,编辑需要在技术应用、政策规范、前沿技术、出版伦理等多方面接受培训,尤其对技术应用方向,9成编辑需要得到相关的信息。编辑对于大模型技术抱有开放拥抱的态度,并亟须获得相关的培训与教育机会,以解决他们在应用场景上的困难,以及在政策法规及诚信建设方面的困惑。 展开更多

It is easy to argue that open data are critical to enabling faster and more effective research discovery.In this article,we describe the approach we have taken at Wiley to support open data and to start enabling more data to be FAIR data(Findable,Accessible,Interoperable and Reusable)with the implementation of four data policies:“Encourages”,“Expects”,“Mandates”and“Mandates and Peer Reviews Data”.We describe the rationale for these policies and levels of adoption so far.In the coming months we plan to measure and monitor the implementation of these policies via the publication of data availability statements and data citations.With this information,we’ll be able to celebrate adoption of data-sharing practices by the research communities we work with and serve,and we hope to showcase researchers from those communities leading in open research. 展开更多

Data availability statements can provide useful information about how researchers actually share research data.We used unsupervised machine learning to analyze 124,000 data availability statements submitted by research authors to 176 Wiley journals between 2013 and 2019.We categorized the data availability statements,and looked at trends over time.We found expected increases in the number of data availability statements submitted over time,and marked increases that correlate with policy changes made by journals.Our open data challenge becomes to use what we have learned to present researchers with relevant and easy options that help them to share and make an impact with new research data. 展开更多
