The Memorial Service and Cremation Dharma Assembly of Master Chuanyin,Honorary President of the BAC,Held at Jingtu Yuan of Donglin Monastery in Mount Lu,Jiangxi Province

On March 10,2023,Master Chuanyin(传印)passed away at Donglin Monastery(东林寺)in Mount Lu(庐山),Jiangxi Province,aged 96.He was the former President and Honorary President of the Buddhist Association of China(BAC).As a well-known patriotic Buddhist leader and a close friend of the Communist Party of China(CPC),he was elected the member of the 11th National Committee of Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference(CPPCC),the member of the Standing Committee and Deputy Director of the Commission for Ethnic and Religious Affairs of the 12th CPPCC National Committee.

Activities of the BAC

The BAC Holds the 2022 Symposium on the Construction of the Humanistic Buddhism Thought On December 28,2022,the Buddhist Association of China(BAC)held the 2022 Symposium on the Construction of the Humanistic Buddhism(人间佛教)Thought.Organized by the Research Institute of Buddhist Culture of China and the BAC’s Research Base for Humanistic Buddhism,the symposium took place both online and offline,focusing on the theme of“Building the Theoretical Framework of Humanistic Buddhism in the New Era.”

A Review of the 70-Year Work on Theravada Buddhism by the Buddhist Association of China

Theravada Buddhism constitutes an integral part of Chinese Buddhism as one of the three Buddhist traditions.Geographically,Theravada Buddhism is mainly prevalent in some areas of southwest China's Yunnan Province,including Xishuangbanna(西双版纳)Dai Autonomous Prefecture,Dehong(德宏)Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture,Lincang(临沧)City,Pu'er(普洱)City,and Baoshan(保山)City.It is followed by some ethnic minorities there,namely Dai(傣),Blang(布朗),De'ang(德昂),and some communities of Achang(阿昌),Wa(佤),and Yi(彝).

Concerted Endeavors over the Past 70 Years

From May 30 to June 3,1953,120 Buddhist representatives from various regions,ethnic groups,and three Buddhist traditions gathered at Guangji Temple(广济寺)in Beijing to attend the Founding Conference of the Buddhist Association of China(BAC).At the Conference,the Constitution of the Buddhist Association of China(中国佛教协会章程)was reviewed and approved,and the first council and the leading body were elected,thereby officially announcing the establishment of the BAC.Mr.Zhao Puchu(赵朴初),then Director of the Preparatory Office.

In May 1987,when lay master Mr.Zhao Puchu(赵朴初),then President of the Buddhist Association of China(BAC)traveled to Thailand,he paid a special visit to the Headquarters of the World Fellowship of Buddhists(WFB)and received a warm welcome from H.E.Professor Sanya Dharmasakti.

A Brief Study on the Establishment of the Buddhist Association of China

The establishment of the Buddhist Association of China(BAC)is a major event in the history of contemporary Buddhism in China.Although the Party had clear guidelines for religious work in the early years since the founding of the People’s Republic of China(PRC),many problems emerged in practice because some officials at the grass-root level did not properly implement the policy due to their lack of ability and understanding of the policy.The Buddhist community also needed an organization to speak on its behalf,so the establishment of the BAC responded to the demands of the times.Led by related departments of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China(CPC),the BAC was established.The Symposium on the Issues in Buddhist Community in Han Region was an important part of the founding process of the BAC,and it resolved many major issues.The use of democratic instruments such as dialogue and consultation in the founding process proved to be an important and valuable historical lesson in dealing with religious issues.

On the morning of May 7,2022,the Buddhist Association of China(BAC)hosted the 2022 Buddhist Exchange Meeting in Lancang-Mekong Region with the theme of“Brighten the Mind Light,Together for a Shared Future”.The meeting was held both online and offline simultaneously,with the offline venue set in Guangji Monastery(广济寺),Beijing.
