Defatted wheat germ is the main by-product of the wheat germ in the oil extraction process. This study aims at development of efficient and low cost processing methods to transform these residues in added value co-product. In this study, wheat germ was analysed for its proximate composition, fatty acid composition, physical and chemical characteristics of wheat germ oil. The basic chemical composition analyses revealed high values of dry matter (87.37 g/100g FW), significant amounts of total protein and fat (27.69 and 8.99 g/100g FW, respectively) content and low ash content (3.08 g/100g FW). The quality of the extracted oils was assessed in terms of acid value, iodine value, saponification value, peroxide value, refractive index, and unsaponifiable matter. The fatty acid profile was found to be made up of linoleic followed by palmitic and oleic as the major fatty acids. Antioxidant properties and in vitro antibacterial activity of defatted wheat germ (DWG) extract were also determined. DWG, as a source of natural antioxidants and antibacterial, could be used to formulate nutraceuticals with potential applications to reduce the level of oxidative stress. The antioxidant potency of the DWG extracts could be the basis for its health promoting potential. The results showed that these by-products could be used as a source of bioactive compounds beneficial for health. 展开更多

As there are increasing numbers of small farms in Germany, it is necessary for them, to keep the workload as small as possible by enhancing the use of automatism. Important as those energetic-technical capabilities and features in a modem dairy farm are, the final decision when using automatic machinery depends on the animal itself and its behavior. As a result, all animal-physiological criteria, animal protection and animal welfare have to be taken into consideration. Therefore tests have been done to investigate dairy cattle behavior on suddenly occurring energy failures, fluctuations or postponements due to a load management. The experiments have been taken in four different stables. In each stable, 12 "focus cows" have been selected. Their daily stress response was measured by a heart rate monitor and faecal cortisol metabolites. Video observation showed modifications in behavior, escape or avoidance reactions; pedometers recorded the movement activity. These scientific experiments will demonstrate cattle behavior in situations driven by a power load management, but no statistically significant effects on the usual daily routine are being expected. 展开更多

Influence of Soil Organic Carbon on Greenhouse Gas Emission Potential After Application of Biogas Residues or Cattle Slurry:Results from a Pot Experiment 被引量:1

Consequently, large amounts of nutrient-rich residues are being used as organic fertilizers. In this study, a pot experiment was conducted to simulate the high-risk situation of enhanced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions following organic fertilizer application in energy maize cultivation. We hypothesized that cattle slurry application enhanced CO2 and N20 fluxes compared to biogas digestate because of the overall higher carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) input, and that higher levels of CO2 and N20 emissions could be expected by increasing soil organic C (SOC) and N contents. Biogas digestate and cattle slurry, at a rate of 150 kg NH+-N ha-1, were incorporated into 3 soil types with low, medium, and high SOC contents (Cambisol, Mollic Gleysol, and Sapric Histosol, termed Clow, Cmedium, and Chigh, respectively). The GHG exchange (CO2, CH4, and N20) was measured on 5 replicates over a period of 22 d using the closed chamber technique. The application of cattle slurry resulted in significantly higher CO2 and N20 fluxes compared to the application of biogas digestate. No differences were observed in CH4 exchange, which was close to zero for all treatments. Significantly higher CO2 emissions were observed in Chigh compared to the other two soil types, whereas the highest N20 emissions were observed in Cmedium. Thus, the results demonstrate the importance of soil type-adapted fertilization with respect to changing soil physical and environmental conditions. 展开更多
