Finite Element Analysis of Large Size Chromium Oxide Green Bodies During Firing

To prevent dense chromium oxide covers from cracking during firing,such as internal cracking,surface cracking and fracture,the firing process of dense chromium oxide products was simulated,and the performance parameters at several specific temperatures before and after densification of chromium oxide green bodies were tested.The temperature difference and the stress difference of chromium oxide green bodies were calculated by Finite Element Software at heating and cooling rates of 10,20,30 and 40℃·h^(-1),respectively.The results show that large temperature difference and thermal stress difference are the main causes of internal cracking,surface cracking and fracture of the brick.Suitable heating rates reduce or avoid internal cracking of the brick.When the heating rate is 30℃·h^(-1) below 1450℃and 10℃·h^(-1) above 1450℃,the temperature difference and the thermal stress difference in the brick are below 4℃and 4 MPa,respectively,and there is no internal crack in the brick after firing.The initial cooling stage is the key stage that causes cracking or fracture of bricks.When the cooling rate is 20℃·h^(-1) above 1450℃,the thermal stress difference in the brick is less than 4 MPa,which can significantly reduce the surface cracks and fracture of the brick. 展开更多

Al_(2)O_(3)-MgO and Al_(2)O_(3)-spinel low cement castables(LCC-AM and LCC-AS)have been extensively used in steel ladles as working linings.Nevertheless,the use of alumina-magnesia gunning mixes has been mainly kept for maintaining these castable linings,because of high rebound loss,poor green strength,high porosity and short life-span.Thanks to a high BET alumina(MC-G),it is now possible to develop a series of high-performance no-cement or low-cement Al_(2)O_(3)-MgO gunning mixes(NCG-AM or LCG-AM).The paper focuses on the BOF slag resistance of NCG-AM,LCG-AM,LCC-AM and LCC-AS.The corrosion mechanisms of rotary slag samples were studied by scanning electron microscopy(SEM/EDS).The results reveal different microstructures around MgO particles,depending on the four used compositions.Continuous and thicker spinel phases were formed in NCG-AM,which was proved to have the best corrosion resistance after the dynamic slag test.MC-G can provide a high diffusion flux of Al^(3+)in terms of kinetics and hence inhibits Kirkendall porosity around MgO particles.In addition,a continuous spinel phase acts like a pinning nail to reinforce the matrix and thus decreases erosion by slag.In contrast to NCG-AM,the porous spinel phase was found around unreacted MgO particles and some particles were carried away near the interface of LCC-AM and slag.The NCG-AM containing MC-G had been tested in two steel plants,and it extended the service life of the ladles up to 50%.In addition,this study suggests the potential application of NCG-AM as steel ladle linings. 展开更多

Corundum spinel castable was prepared using tabular corundum as aggregates,white fused corundum powder,spinel powder and alumina powder as the matrix,pure calcium aluminate cement as a binder,and extra adding calcium chloride(0,1%,2%,and 3%,by mass).The effects of the CaCl2 addition on the cold physical properties,the hot strength,the thermal shock resistance and the microstructure of the castable were studied.The results show that,for the corundum spinel castable fired at 1550℃,with the increase of the CaCl2 addition from 0 to 3%,the cold strengthes first increase,then decrease,the apparent porosity increases,the volume density decreases,and the linear change rate first decreases and then increases,while the overall change is not significant;however,the hot modulus of rupture and the thermal shock resistance are obviously improved.This is mainly due to that,CaCl2 is evenly distributed in the castable in the form of solution,and reacts with Al2O3 to form small flake CA6 crystals,which evenly distributed in the sample matrix strengthening and toughening the material. 展开更多

The ceramic setting binders obtained by means of the raw mix mechano-chemical processing(mechanical dispersion and chemical interaction processes combination), used for bonding refractory concretes, become more available with a subsequent increased interest in their properties because they develop initial strength during a heat up of the units within 8-10 h, in contrast to 24 h after placement for high Al_2O_3 cements(HAC). This strength development enables high temperature processing units to be relined with minimum turnaround time, thus providing a favored cost/performance ratio. The present paper identifies the predominant phosphate phases responsible for developing good mechanical-strength properties of zirconia and alumina concretes bonded with mechano-chemical binders. It sets out the colloid and crystalline phases resulted from interphase interaction that provide the basis for high concentrated bonding suspensions(HCBS) technology useful to the refractory industry. 展开更多

Steam oxidation resistance of Si3N4 and Si2N2O as well as SiAlON bonded SiC refractories at 900℃was tested according to ASTM-C863.Phase composition and microstructure before and after oxidation were analyzed by XRD and SEM.The results show that Si3N4 and Si2N2O bonded SiC refractory presents better steam oxidation resistance than SiAlON bonded SiC.For Si3N4 and Si2N2O bonded SiC,the oxidation speed is higher with more pronounced volume expansion in the early 100 h;afterwards,the volume expansion slows down gradually and starts to level off after 300 h.It is considered that the high silica glass phase formed during the oxidation covers Si3N4 and Si2N2O,and SiC as a protective layer and fills the open pores.But for SiAlON bonded SiC,the volume expands gradually and constantly with the increasing oxidation duration even after 500 h,due to the continuous formation of mullite transformed from oxidation products and Al2O3 in SiAlON. 展开更多

Effects of SiO2 content of silica sol, molding pressure, reaction temperature, reaction duration, and N2 flow rate on phase compositions and microstructure of result- ants were studied. The results show that using 7. 5 mass% SiO2 containing silica sol immersed sawdust as raw materials, the prepared Si3N4 powder is featured with high α-Si3N4 content, few impurities, etc. in the conditions of 1 450 ℃ of reaction temperature, 9 h of reaction duration, 400 mL ·min- 1 of N2 flow rate and 10 MPa of molding pressure. 展开更多

Zircon ( ≤44 μm) and carbon black (≤30μm) were used as starting materials and mixed for 24 h using anhydrous ethanol as medium with the mass ratio of 100:40, dried fully at 60 ℃ and then dry mixed for 10 h. Specimens with size of Ф20 mm × 5 mm were pressed under 60 MPa, then dried fully at 120 ℃ , put into a furnace with 1. 0 L ·min^-1 nitrogen gas and fired at 1 400, 1 450, 1 480 and 1 500℃ for 6, 9 and 12 h, respectively. The phase composition and microstructure of the specimens were studied by XRD and SEM, and the carbothermal reduction and nitridation reaction process was thermodynamically analyzed. The results show that using zircon and carbon black as starting materials, ZrN - Si3N4 composite is synthesized by carbothermal reduction and nitridation reaction in nitrogen atmosphere. The composites with different compositions are obtained by controlling the firing temperature and partial pressure of CO gas. The proper firing temperature and holding time to synthesize ZrN - Si3N4 composite are 1 500 ℃ for 12 h. 展开更多

Al2O3 - SiC - C castables with 2% pitch or 2%, 4% and 6% treated graphite, respectively, were prepared based on the basic formulation of traditional Al2O3 - SiC - C castables. The flowability of castables, and bulk density, volume stability, strength, oxidation resistance and slag resistance of specimens fired at 110 ℃, 1 100 ℃, and 1 500 9Z respectively were comparatively studied. The results showed that: (1) With carbon source changing from pitch to treated graphite and the increase of treated graphite addition, water addition of castables increased, bulk density of specimens fired at different temperatures increased firstly and then decreased, strength after drying decreased obviously, strength after firing and oxidation resistance changed slightly, hot modulus of rupture increased obviously; (2) Slag resistance of specimen with treated graphite was worse than that of specimen with the same amount of pitch, but the former was obviously improved with the increase of treated graphite addition. 展开更多

The application of bauxite with low Al2O3 content has been studied in this paper and β-SiAlON has been obtained from two kinds of bauxites (Al2O3 content 68.08 mass% and 46.30 mass% respectively) by aluminum reduction and nitridation method. The sequence of reactions has been studied using thermal analysis (TG-DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with EDS. Compared with carbon thermal reduction and nitridation of aluminosilicates employed presently, the reaction in the system of bauxite-Al-N2 occurs at lower temperature. β-SiAlON appears as one of the main products from 1573K and exists stably in the range of the present experimental temperature. The microstructure of β-SiAlON obtained at 1773 K is short column with 5-10μm observed by SEM. 展开更多
