Therefore, with some advantages, such as: simple producing process, reasonable price and simple modification technology needed, the blended SVO (straight vegetable oil) is recommended as suitable fuel for the marine application. Even though, there are some disadvantages of the blended SVO, such as a weak stability, layer separation in low temperature and some others. Therefore, experimental results or some prediction methods are used to get the roll damping in design stage of ships. Among some prediction methods, Ikeda's one is widely used in many ship motion computer programs. Using the method, the roll damping of various ship hulls with various bilge keels can be calculated to investigate its characteristics. To calculate the roll damping of each ship, detailed data of the ship are needed to input. Therefore, a simpler prediction method is expected in primary design stage. Such a simple method must be useful to validate the results obtained by a computer code to predict it on the basis of Ikeda's method, too. On the basis of the predicted roll damping by Ikeda's method for various ships, a very simple prediction formula of the roll damping of ships is deduced in the present paper. Ship hull forms are systematically changed by changing length, beam, draft, mid-ship sectional coefficient and prismatic coefficient. It is found, however, that this simple formula can not be used for ships that have high position of the center of gravity. A modified method to improve accuracy for such ships is proposed.展开更多

Under navigation within ice channel, possibilities for maneuvering are reduced; therefore, danger of collision of ships exists. The ice floes between vessels hulls and outside are the major factors defining values and direction of side force and yawing moment that arise on their hulls during divergence. Ice loads on the ship hull exceed considerably the loads caused by water flow around hull. Performed previously experiments in the ice basin have detected that besides increase of side force and yawing moment modules the change of side force directions occurs during the divergence of vessels in comparison with same maneuvering on water area without ice cover. Article contains the detailed problem definition and mathematical model of ships interaction during opposite passing by or overtaking and technical approach to computation of loads on vessels hulls. As example of strategy application, the simulation of loads on overtaking ship was performed, and main results of computations are presented. Outcomes of investigation are character of variation of side force and yawing moment during passage along overtaken ship and dependence of the peak values of additional ice resistance, side force and yawing moment on beam distance between vessels and thickness that are contained in the article.展开更多

In the present study, the authors focus on the effect of these active substances to the maaix polymer of coating. In order to obtain such information, the authors investigated the penetration of active substances to the polymer from cross section of specimens introduced by SAICAS (surface and interracial cutting analysis system), followed by FT-IR-ATR (Fourier transform infrared and attenuated total reflectance) spectroscopy analysis from Z direction of cross section. The corrosion test of coating panels by these active substances (control as artificial seawater) has been conducted for 120 days. The results show that the depth profile of each active substance is around few dozens of micrometers from coating surface. The criteria of corrosion test cannot be determined by these results due to lacking in actual corrosion data immersed for 15 years under active substances. However, the authors evaluated the effect on ballast tank coating systems by active substances using analytical methods of SAICAS and FT-IR-ATR spectroscopy.展开更多

A similar procedure was also used for painted flat panels that were immersed in the ocean. The relationship between leaching rate and fouling condition was considered by quantifying the amount of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) on the surface of immersed flat panel using fluorescence spectroscopy. The leaching rate results from ship hulls showed good agreement with the value by reporting of leaching rate of antifouling agents. The fluorescence spectroscopy results showed that the amount of ATP on the surface of the panel increased over time as the leaching rate fell, which implies an inverse relationship between leaching rate and fouling index. Fluorescence spectroscopy was also seen to be a simple method for evaluating the relationship between biofouling indexes and leaching rate.展开更多

Distribution/loading facility designed for a total of six arms: two each for gasoline, kerosene and diesel (or 33.33% for each product) whereas gasoline storage capacity is 55%, diesel, 33%, kerosene 11%, and slops, 1% of the total depot capacity. The design supply to distribution chain capacity ratio showed a mismatch, which in actual operation becomes 2:1. The above design created ullage problem at sustained supplies, gross under utilization of supply chain infrastructures and poor operational performance. After a technical evaluation, a section of the depot storage to loading pipeline network was re-designed and modified to enable products supply capacity to match loading and minimize storage. Hence, the gasoline loading became 66.67%, kerosene and diesel, each of 16.67%, increasing the actual supply to distribution chain capacity ratio from 2:1 to 2:2 (and when required, can be maximized to 2:3) thereby correcting the apparent mismatch between the supply and distribution chain capacities. The modification has enabled the refiner to increase depot and upstream supply chain utilization展开更多

Analysis of samples was done using INAA (instrumental neutron activation analysis) for Mn, V, Cu, As and Cd, and AAS (atomic absorption spectrophotometry) for Fe, Cr, Zn, Ni and Co. The concentrations of metals in sediments followed the orders Fe 〉 V〉 Mn 〉 Cd 〉 Ni 〉 Zn 〉 Cu 〉As, for the dry season and Fe 〉 V 〉 Ni 〉 Cu 〉 Zn 〉 Mn 〉 Cd 〉As, for the wet season. Concentrations of Co and Cr were below detection limit, whiles Cu, Cd and Ni were found to be above the TELs (threshold effect levels) of NOAA's (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's) SQuiRTs (screening quick reference tables) at most sites. Estimated enrichment factors for individual metals showed very high contamination of the port's sediments, with Cd occurring at all sites, and Cu, As, V and Ni occurring at some sites for both dry and wet seasons. Although sediments from the Tema Port were highly enriched with Cd, Cu, Ni and V above natural background levels, the overall PLI (pollution load index) per sampling station considering background values of the analysed elements indicated that metal pollution in the port's sediment is below 1, indicating relatively unpolluted sediment.展开更多

Clay fraction content is as high as 60 % of sediments in the middle of the channel with a pronounced downstream decreasing trend on the banks comparing to the contents in the middle of the channel. Towards the river mouth, the fine fraction tends to disappear leading to a shelly sand sediment type essentially. During low water period, clay fraction contents increase particularly at the vicinity of the dam reservoir. In the estuarine reach, downstream the dam, this increasing trend during the low water stage is particularly marked in the middle of the channel. The clay mineral assemblage shows that kaolinite and smectite are the main components, whereas interlayered illite-smectite and illite are minor constituents. The upstream-downstream profile shows a decrease in kaolinite content although it remains the dominant constituent. Floating clay minerals (smectite and illite-smectite) concentrate rather in the middle of the channel and on the right bank where the water depth is higher. According to seasonal variations, the distribution of these clay minerals often follows the concentration of the entire clay fraction; their contents increase during low water stage period. This hydrodynamics sorting of floating minerals, evident in the up-dam zone, tends to disappear in the eastern reach between Diama dam and the mouth. Clay minerals assemblage shows, through the time, a rather homogeneous composition which does not seem to be altered by the seasonal fluctuations.展开更多

The paper also discusses the techniques in investigating a short wave problem of stability in the same model where a long wave is simulated. Waves offshore of Coffs Harbour at 80 m depth have been recorded by MHL for a period of over 30 years. Long waves have been simultaneously measured in the harbour over a period of a decade. These data enabled the model to be verified on two dates (4/6/12, 5/9/14) when high long waves were recorded at the boat ramp harbour under storm and non-storm conditions. Long waves are generated in harbours due to group bounded long wave and surf beat or edge waves. The paper presents methodologies of generating long waves both numerically and by using physical models, and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of these generation techniques. Numerical modelling carried out using long period regular waves in a previous investigation predicted reductions up to 50% due to change of planform of the boat ramp harbour where an area next to the boat ramp was excavated and roughness elements introduced to dampen long periods. The 3D physical model simulated a 25% decrease in the long wave energy in the boat ramp when a suitable change in the planform was made. A 3D undistorted model of scale 1:58 was used in the investigation.展开更多

文摘At intensive winter navigation, the ships should separate under movement on opposite courses or make overtaking of slowly moving cargo vessels in the water areas covered with ice. Outcomes of investigation are character of variation of side force and yawing moment during passage along overtaken ship and dependence of the peak values of additional ice resistance, side force and yawing moment on beam distance between vessels and thickness that are contained in the article.

文摘The authors investigated the leaching rate of antifouling agents from marine paint using an instrument that allows direct measurement from the flat bottom of ship hulls shortly after dry dock. Fluorescence spectroscopy was also seen to be a simple method for evaluating the relationship between biofouling indexes and leaching rate.

文摘Recent advances in hydraulic modeling create improved methodology to accurately predict the extent of floodplain map in order to assist policy makers to develop flood hazard mitigation measures and timely inform the local communities with the flood risk alerts. However, accurate prediction of the inundation map also depends on the spatial resolution of the topographic data.In this study,we developed a novel high-resolution modeling framework for Nashwaak River watershed,New Brunswick,Canada to capture significant flooding along the banks of the river for the two historic flood events and accurately map the floodplains for both the gauged and ungauged areas of the watershed. The model is based on HEC-RAS(US Army Corps of Engineers Hydrologic Engineering Center River Analysis System)hydraulic model and the topographic data were generated from high-resolution LiDAR data of~0.5 m.The model runs were driven by observed flow conditions applied at the boundary and the framework is based on different spatial resolution to determine the effect of spatial resolution on the predicted inundation. We validated the model simulated water surface elevation with the observed data and the model reproduces reasonably good skill score. Results from the numerical simulation suggest that apart from the strength of the stream velocity, design of the modeling framework plays an important role in determining the inundation depth as well as the maximum flooding extent.
文摘In this study, the researchers categorized the different maritime command-language (words and expressions) used on-board by young Filipino officers and seafarers employed at the different foreign shipping companies in the country and abroad. The paper also ascertained the importance of maritime language in the global seafaring profession of maritime youth in the Philippines. The respondents of the present study were the young officers and seafarers of the maritime university, specifically, John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University-Molo, Iloilo City, Philippines. Quantitative and qualitative mode of data collection was employed by the researchers. A researcher-made data gathering instrument was used to capture the necessary data in understanding the role of maritime language in the global seafaring profession. Sample utterances were gathered from the respondents and were subject to corresponding statistical interpretation. Qualitative information, comments, and remarks were utilized in this study to showcase the importance of maritime language in the profession of young officers and seafarers as graduates of leading global supplier in the international maritime industry.
文摘Ten trace and heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Ni, Zn, Cu, Cd, As, Co, Cr and V) were analysed in sediments collected from nine stations at the Tema Port of Ghana, during the dry and wet seasons. Although sediments from the Tema Port were highly enriched with Cd, Cu, Ni and V above natural background levels, the overall PLI (pollution load index) per sampling station considering background values of the analysed elements indicated that metal pollution in the port's sediment is below 1, indicating relatively unpolluted sediment.
文摘Clay fraction contents distribution in the Senegal River estuary after the building of the anti-salt Diama dam has shown that upstream sediments are very muddy. Clay minerals assemblage shows, through the time, a rather homogeneous composition which does not seem to be altered by the seasonal fluctuations.
文摘Compulsory liability insurance has widely existed in the field of marine insurance. However, marine drilling platforms have always been excluded from this system in China. In view of the special legal nature of oil pollution compulsory liability insurance for marine drilling platforms, this paper analyzes a number of issues related to oil pollution compulsory liability insurance, elaborates on the necessity for China to implement the system and makes some suggestions about the implementation of that.
文摘This paper presents examples of field data of extreme seiche waves measured at Coffs Harbour by MHL and describes the generation and measuring methodology to detect and reduce seiche agitation in the Coifs Harbour boat ramp using a 3D physical model. A 3D undistorted model of scale 1:58 was used in the investigation.
