Diffusion-ordered nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy(DOSY),dubbed chromato-graphic NMR spectroscopy,can be used to simultaneously distinguish and identify the structures of components in a mixture according to their different diffusion coefficients.In order to improve the resolution of DOSY on the diffusion dimension,a lot of matrices have been developed to expand the application of this technique in mixture analysis.However,there is no matrix to detect the mixture of ionic liquids(ILs).Herein,we introduced a new matrix,poly(sodium-p-styrenesulfonate)(PSSNa),which can be used to fully separate the signals of a mixture of different ILs.The mixture of three imidazolium ILs of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide,1-allyl-3-vinylimidazolium bromide and 1-arboxymethy-3-methylimidazolium chloride could be fully distinguished by virtue of their different interactions with PSSNa.We also investigated the influences of PSSNa amount,IL con-centration and solution pH value on the signal resolution of mixtures.This work provides a scientific reference for the analysis of the other IL analytes. 展开更多

The aromatic compounds,including o-xylene,m-xylene,p-xylene,and ethylbenzene,primarily originate from the catalytic reforming of crude oil,and have a wide variety of applications.However,because of similar physical and chemical properties,these compounds are difficult to be identified by gas chromatography(GC)without standard samples.With the development of modern nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)techniques,NMR has emerged as a powerful and efficient tool for the rapid analysis of complex and crude mixtures without purification.In this study,the parameters of one-dimensional(1D)total correlation spectroscopy(TOCSY)NMR techniques,including 1D selective gradient TOCSY and 1D chemicalshift-selective filtration(CSSF)with TOCSY,were optimized to obtain comprehensive molecular structure information.The results indicate that the overlapped signals in NMR spectra of nonpolar aromatic compounds(including o-xylene,m-xylene,p-xylene and ethylbenzene),polar aromatic compounds(benzyl alcohol,benzaldehyde,benzoic acid),and aromatic compounds with additional conjugated bonds(styrene)can be resolved in 1D TOCSY.More importantly,full molecular structures can be clearly distinguished by setting appropriate mixing time in 1D TOCSY.This approach simplifies the NMR spectra,provides structural information of entire molecules,and can be applied for the analysis of other structural isomers. 展开更多

Magnetic resonance image quality and patient safety have been the focus of engineering and research ever since the invention of equipment in the early 1970s.In high field(or ultrahigh field)MRI systems,the emerging techniques induced by B1 field challenges have promoted various potential solutions.This paper describes the relationship between RF power and B1þfield performance,and the overall requirements considered in RF subsystem design.The design of the RF in the MR system is systematically summarized,including the entire transmission chain,sequence algorithm and RF pulse design,and the probabilities for improvement and optimization in the system design are indicated.At the same time,the radio frequency related issues of the human whole-body 7 T MR and animal MR systems are discussed,especially the promising future showed by the technologies such as radio frequency parallel transmission technology in the ultrahigh field. 展开更多

On the use of cross polarization in solid-state NMR:1 H spinlock versus adiabatic demagnetization in the rotating frame

Cross polarization(CP)is a widely used solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)technique for enhancing the polarization of dilute S spins from much larger polarization of abundant I spins such as 1 H.To achieve such a polarization transfer,the I spin should either be spin-locked or be converted to the dipolar ordered state through adiabatic demagnetization in the rotating frame.In this work,we analyze the spin dynamics of the Hartmann-Hahn CP(HHCP)utilizing the 1 H spin-locking,and the dipolar-order CP(DOCP)having the 1 H adiabatic demagnetization.We further propose an adiabatic demagnetization CP(ADCP)where a constant radio-frequency pulse is applied on the S spin while 1 H is adiabatically demagnetized.Our analyses indicate that ADCP utilizes the adiabatic passage to effectively achieve the polarization transfer from the 1 H to S spins.In addition,the dipolar ordered state generated during the 1 H demagnetization process could also be converted into the observable S polarization through DOCP,further enhancing the polarized signals.It is shown by both static and magic-angle-spinning(MAS)NMR experiments that ADCP has dramatically broadened the CP matching condition over the other CP schemes.Various samples have been used to demonstrate the polarization transfer efficiency of this newly proposed ADCP scheme. 展开更多

The design methods for gradient coils are mostly based on discrete extrinsic methods(e.g.,the BioteSavart integration calculation),for which the surface normal vector strongly influences any numerical calculation of the discretized surface.Previous studies are mostly based on regular or analytical surfaces,which allow normal vectors to be expressed analytically.For certain applications,design methods for extending currentcarrying surfaces from developable or analytic geometries to arbitrary surfaces generated from a scanned point cloud are required.The key task is to correctly express the discretized normal vectors to ensure geometrical accuracy of the designed coils.Mathematically,it has been proven that applying a Delaunay triangulation to approximate a smooth surface can result in the discrete elemental normal vectors converging to those of the original surface.Accordingly,this article uses Delaunay triangulation to expand upon previous design methods so that they encompass arbitrary piecewise continuous surfaces.Two design methods,the stream function and the so-called solid isotropic material with penalization(SIMP)method,are used to design circumvolute and noncircumvolute gradient coils on general surfaces. 展开更多

In reservoir rocks,the term“ageing”refers to extended exposition to crude oil;a typically water-wet sandstone will then gradually become oil-wet as a consequence of the deposition of insoluble fractions of oil onto the surface grains.Rocks have been aged artificially by subjecting them to a bitumen solution at elevated temperature in order to achieve comparable surface properties for three different types of rock:Bentheimer,Berea Buff and Liege Chalk.Using saturated and aromatic model compounds as proxies for crude oil,the nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)relaxation dispersion in native and aged rocks was compared and correlated to the properties of paramagnetic impurities in these rock types.Perfluorated liquids were found to follow the same trend as deuterated and naturally occurring oil components,suggesting they can be used as suitable tracers for wettability studies since the ^(19)F nucleus is absent in natural sources.By combining electron paramagnetic resonance(EPR)and dynamic nuclear polarization(DNP)it becomes possible to identify and quantify the origin of the dominating relaxation processes between native and aged rocks,providing an alternative approach to assess wettability in natural rocks. 展开更多

A green route for the preparation of layered double hydroxides from basic magnesium carbonate

Layered double hydroxides(LDHs)have received extensive attention in many fields such as catalysis,environmental management and medical applications.Typically,expensive soluble metal salts are commonly used as the starting materials for the synthesis of LDHs.Here,we report a novel synthesis route for Mg/Al-LDH by using inexpensive basic magnesium carbonate as the starting material.X-ray diffraction(XRD)and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance(ssNMR)data show that LDHs with rich defects are formed rapidly at room temperature and good crystallinity can be obtained after further hydrothermal treatment.These results provide a simple,rapid and green preparation method for LDHs. 展开更多

Water exchange between the different compartments of a heterogeneous specimen can be characterized via diffusion magnetic resonance imaging(dMRI).Many analysis frameworks using dMRI data have been proposed to describe exchange,often using a double diffusion encoding(DDE)stimulated echo sequence.Techniques such as diffusion exchange weighted imaging(DEWI)and the filter exchange and rapid exchange models,use a specific subset of the full space DDE signal.In this work,a general representation of the DDE signal was employed with different sampling schemes(namely constant b1,diagonal and anti-diagonal)from the data reduction models to estimate exchange.A near-uniform sampling scheme was proposed and compared with the other sampling schemes.The filter exchange and rapid exchange models were also applied to estimate exchange with their own subsampling schemes.These subsampling schemes and models were compared on both simulated data and experimental data acquired with a benchtop MR scanner.In synthetic data,the diagonal and near-uniform sampling schemes performed the best due to the consistency of their estimates with the ground truth.In experimental data,the shifted diagonal and near-uniform sampling schemes outperformed the others,yielding the most consistent estimates with the full space estimation.The results suggest the feasibility of measuring exchange using a general representation of the DDE signal along with variable sampling schemes.In future studies,algorithms could be further developed for the optimization of sampling schemes,as well as incorporating additional properties,such as geometry and diffusion anisotropy,into exchange frameworks. 展开更多

Proton nuclear(^(1)H)is the observed nucleus on which most magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)applications depend.Most traditional^(1)H MRI can provide structural and functional information about organisms,while various non-proton nuclei(X-nuclei)MRI can provide more metabolic information.However,due to the relatively poor signal-to-noise ratio(SNR)of X-nuclei MRI,their applications are quite rare compared to^(1)H.Benefit from the rapid developments of MRI hardware and software technologies,X-nuclei MRI has recently attracted increasing interests in biomedical research.This review firstly introduces some current methods to improve the SNR of X-nuclei MRI.Secondly,this review describes biomedical applications of X-nuclei MRI,especially focusing on the current use of X-nuclei(^(13)C,^(17)O,^(19)F,^(23)Na and^(31)P)MRI to study related diseases in different organs,including the brain,liver,kidney,heart and bone.Finally,perspectives studies on X-nuclei imaging and its potential applications are described in biomedical research. 展开更多

Non-invasive assessment for intratumoural distribution of interstitial fluid flow

Interstitial fluid plays a vital role in drug delivery and tumour treatment.However,few non-invasive measurement methods are available for measuring low-velocity biological fluid flow.Therefore,this study aimed to develop a novel technology called interstitial flow velocity-MRI.The interstitial flow velocity-MRI sequence consists of a dual inversion recovery preparation and an improved stimulated echo sequence(ISTE)combined with phase-contrast MRI.A homemade flow phantom was used to assess the feasibility and sensitivity of interstitial flow velocity-MRI.In addition,xenografts of female BALB/c mouse models of 4T1 breast cancer administered losartan(40 mg/kg)or saline(n?6)were subjected to imaging on a 7.0 T scanner to assess the in vivo interstitial fluid flow velocity.The results showed a significant correlation(P<0.001)between the theoretical velocities and velocities measured using the flow phantom.Interstitial flow velocity-MRI could detect a velocity as low as 10.21±2.65 mm/s with a spatial resolution of 0.313 mm.The losartan group had a lower mean interstitial fluid velocity than the control group(85±16 vs 113±24 mm/s).In addition,compared to the saline treatment,losartan treatment reduced the proportion of collagen fibres by 10%and 12%in the Masson and Sirius red staining groups,respectively.Interstitial flow velocity-MRI has the potential to determine interstitial fluid flow velocity non-invasively and exhibits an intuitive velocity map. 展开更多

Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (ssNMR) spectroscopy has become a powerful tool in surface studies, asit provides access to local structural characterizations at atomic level from multipleviews, with comprehensive information on chemical bonding and spatial structures. Inthis review, we summarized and discussed the latest research developments on thesuccessful application of ssNMR to characterize surface MeH species on solid catalystsincluding supported single-site heterogeneous catalysts, bulk metal oxides and metalmodified zeolites. We also discussed the opportunities and challenges in this field, aswell as the potential application/development of state-of-the-art ssNMR technologies toenable further exploration of metal hydrides in heterogeneous catalysis. 展开更多

Transient NOE driven signal enhancement of INADEQUATE solid-state NMR spectroscopy for the structural analysis of rubbers

INADEQUATE(Incredible Natural Abundance DoublE QUAntum Transfer Experiment)is one of the most important techniques in revealing the carbon skeleton of organic solids in solid-state NMR spectroscopy.Nevertheless,its use for structural analysis is quite limited due to the low natural abundance of^(13)C-^(13)C connectivity(~0.01%)and thus low sensitivity.Particularly,in semi-solids like rubbers,the sensitivity will be further significantly reduced by the inefficient cross polarization from 1H to^(13)C due to molecular motions induced averaging of^(1)H-^(13)C dipolar couplings.Herein,in this study,we demonstrate that transient nuclear Overhauser effect(NOE)can be used to efficiently enhance^(13)C signals,and thus enable rapid acquisition of two-dimensional(2D)^(13)C INADEQUATE spectra of rubbers.Using chlorobutyl rubber as the model system,it is found that an overall signalto-noise ratio(SNR)enhancement about 22%can be achieved,leading to significant timesaving by about 33%as compared to the direct polarization-based INADEQUATE experiment.Further experimental results on natural rubber and ethylene propylene diene monomer(EPDM)rubber are also shown to demonstrate the robust performance of transient NOE enhanced INADEQUATE experiment. 展开更多

Relaxation and diffusion measurements were carried out on single and binary liquids filling the pore space of controlled porous glass Vycor with an average pore size of about 4 nm.The dispersion of the longitudinal relaxation time Tr is discussed as a means to identify liquid-surface interaction based on existing models developed for metal-free glass surfaces.In addition,the change of T1 and T2 with respect to their bulk values is discussed,in particular T2 serves as a probe for the strength of molecular interactions.As the native glass surface is polar and contains a large amount of hydroxyl groups,a pronounced interaction of polar and protic adsorbate liquids is expected;however,the T dispersion,and the corresponding reduction of T2,are also observed for non-polar liquids such as alkanes and cyclohexane.Deuterated liquids are employed for simplifying data analysis in binary systems,but also for separating the respective contributions of intra-and intermolecular interactions to the overall relaxation rate.Despite the lack of paramagnetic impurities in the glass material,H and 2H relaxation dispersions of equivalent molecules are frequently found to differ from each other,suggesting intermolecular relaxation mechanisms for the'H nuclei.The variation of the T dispersion when comparing single and binary systems gives clear evidence for the preferential adsorption of one of the two liquids,suggesting complete phase separation in several cases.Measurement of the apparent tortuosity by self-diffusion experiments supports the concept of a local variation of sample composition within the porespace. 展开更多
